Preparing a file to be printed
Good evening,
I have a question about the exportation of a file made in Indesign that I need to print. I hope you can help me.
I have to precise that short time ago I used Freehand for projects as catalogs with many pages.
In that case, to export a file that I had to print I had to transform necessarily every image present in the file in TIF at 300dpi and I had to adjust the measure of every single picture (percentage of resizing).
My question is: Is this the process that I have to adopt also when I work with Indesign?
Moreover, If I want to design a catalog or a project similar to a magazine, is it right to realize it with pages placed side by side?
If it is the right way, is it necessary to make the edging of 3mm also in the borders of bookbinding? Otherwise, is it an option that is made automatically during the exportation in pdf?

The requiements for a print-ready file are not really dependent on the application. If you need 300 ppi, at output, your image when placed in ID must have an effective resolution of at least 300 ppi. You can downsample and convert the color to CMYK during export, however, so it isn't necessary to edit each image unless you like to tweak the color after conversion. You can place prety much any image format, as well, so if you have .psd or .jpg there is no reason to convert just for the sake of conversion.
You can add a bleed allowance or slug during document setup, and you can include those in your export, along with a variety of marks.
You should set up a project like a catalog as "facing pages" in numeric order, then export to PDF as single pages (this is the default -- you have to work to get spreads). The printer will impose into the correct order for binding and add any grind-off allowance or creep that is required.

OS X prepared pdf files slow to print on Windows
I have a file I prepared in OS X using the pdf popup in the default print dialog (i.e. not via an Acrobat driver). The file prints fine from my computer, but takes forever via Acrobat on a windows machine. A sample is attached. Page 1 will print fine, but pages 2 and 3 are slow. I know they are more graphically complex, but why they would take so long is a mystery. Can you tell why? and is there something that I could do differently to make it better?
On windows machine try running through Optimizer and cehck for embeded fonts.
Al lot of times You think you you are using certain fonts , but then when you look you have 8-10 or more identical copies of the same font.
remove all copies of the same exact font style.

By doing so free up tons of space.
Also for some reason Graphics created on Mac and then opened on a Pc almost alwaqys ballon to 5-10 times the size they would be on PC. so you might end up with a 500K file on a Mac and the same file on a PC might end up being 50mb . But the same file if created on Pc and goes to MaC would not change or actually shrink a littel its the way graphics are handled on the different platform.
If quality is no an issue then you can reduce the dpi of the graphics say fro 600 dpi to 300 or 1200 to 600 and that will reduce the size as well -

But most people would recommend keeping functionality separate... if the budget allows. That whole "single point of failure" concept. If that server dies, you've lost both of those functions. -
Orarrp can't print pdf file directly to printer
oracle remote print utility (orarrp) can't print pdf file directly to printer.
we expect orarrp utility can handle ".rrpa" file (i.e. pdf file generated on the application server) by directly print the file to the client's printer, i.e. invoke the acrobat reader on the client side, display the the printer selection dialogue, after confirmation print the pdf file, then the acrobat reader close automatically nicely.
However we are disappointed as the acrobat reader startup and display the pdf file content but does not print and does not close.
After testing the problem several times, there are some findings:-
Finding (A):-
(a) for the success of direct printing of pdf file, a physical path must be provided; we have tried 2 methods:
1) using drag & drop to copy the pdf file directly to the browser
2) open pdf file in the browser directly using browser menu-->File-->Open.
(b) for the failure of direct printing, a virtual path is involved and we have also tried 2 methods:
1) when web.show_document() is used
2) enter the url to the URL bar of the browser,
eg. http://appsvr.com:7777/report/test_printout/APPSVR1094707.rrpa (this is a virtual path/url)
Finding (B):-
(a)when the physical path is used, a temporary pdf file is generated in the same directory where the rrpa file exists in the application server,
e.g. in application server: d:/printout/yyy.pdf is generated for d:/printout/xxx.rrpa when direct print occurs
(b) however when the virtual path is used, there is no such temp "pdf" file generated and direct print failed.
May be when virtual path is used, orarrp utility don't know where to generate the temp "pdf" so direct print doesn't occur.
So, anyone has similar experience or further queries or has solutions, please join.

Even same can be used in smartforms, for getting spool request in PDF format as well which will decrease the size of file when printing in SAP printer.

How to print a Proe .drw ( Vector Graphic ) file to a printer.
I am having a drawing model (proe .drw file). I want to print this file to a .tif file using java.The print driver is "Informatik Image Driver 3.20".
.Can some one help me out with the steps involved in this.
I understand .drw file are of type Vector Graphic. How to print it.
I also have a corresponding postscript file generated from the .drw file. Is there a way to print this post scritp file to the printer mentioned above to create .tif.
Any quick help will be deeply appreciated.

Do you mean attachment? You can't do that with free Adobe Reader you need Acrobat to do this.

Clicking on File and the Print Preview no longer gives a print preview.
I used to be able to click on File and then Print Preview. Now all of a sudden it no longer works. There is no Print Preview.
How did you get the '''HP Smart Web Printing4.51 true [email protected]''' extension enabled?
AFAIK that extension hasn't worked in Firefox since Firefox version 3.5.
Try disabling that extension and see if Print Preview works. -
how can I send multiple pictures to the Kodak link (under file & then order prints)? if the photos are not sequential can it be done?

How do I get the file name to print up closer to a horizontal photo?
Kind of a nit-picking question, but here goes anyway:
I use Lightroom's Print module to create contact sheets (three rows by three columns). I check the "Photo Info" check box and select "Filename" to have the file names printed with each photo. When the photo is shot vertically, the file name prints at the lower edge of the photo, as you would expect. However, when the photo is shot horizontally, the file name still prints down in the same place where it would print if the photo were vertical. That can be confusing because if the next photo down on the sheet is vertical, a file name can end up being much closer to the vertical photo below it--to which it is completely unrelated--than to the horizontal photo above it, to which it actually refers.
Is there any way to get Lightroom to print file names closer to horizontal photos?Thanks to both of you for your speedy responses. Making all the shots horizontal or vertical (i. e., unchecking the "Rotate to Fit" box on the right) is not what I want. Increasing the vertical spacing is a possibility, but that'll make the vertical shots smaller. There's a program called "ImageBuddy" which does exactly what I want LIghtroom to do in this instance: print the filenames of only the horizontal shots higher and therefore closer to the photos to which they refer. It's quite cheap, but I'd rather not use Lightroom for everything else and ImageBuddy just for contact sheets, so if anybody knows of a way to do what I want to do within Lightroom, please do clue me in.

Adobe reader 11.0.5 - cannot print pdf file to network printer
I have a 64 bit HP Pavilion a6230n PC running Windows 7, fully updated. I have wireless connection to a home file/printer server. My printer, a Brother HL-5140, is connected via USB to the file/printer server. All my other Windows programs capable of printing can print on the network printer - all except adobe reader. Adobe Reader sees the printer and all printing processes appear to be sending the file to the printer, however, the printer never gets the document. I've tried printing as a document, in which case the document sits in the printer queue until I delete it. If I send it as an image, each queue entry is deleted after adobe thinks it has printed. Again, nothing ever prints on the printer, and again, no other program running on my computer has any problems printing to this printer.
I would appreciate any help with this problem.
Addendum - 4 Nov 13:
I uninstalled adobe reader 11 and installed a much earlier version, and now I can print pdf files. Clearly the printing issue is with the current versions of adobe reader.This phenomenon can happen with PDF files that have errors in them. Adobe Reader or Acrobat may be able to fix these errors, but if you close the application, it will ask to save the corrected file. If you save it once, that should no longer occur when you open it again.
This is just one explanation, but it doesn't explain why that happens with every PDF you have.

How to send a text file to a printer?

I put the java code in SYS, 'cause I assume that account has max privilege. If the test is successful, I will move that to some user schema and then to deal with those privilege settings... But I'm unlucky.

If you are using Oracle8i, release 8.1 -- much can be done with Java. java
would be able to print directly from the server.
Looks like using Java to print out file is better than PL/SQL. But there's no more hint there! And, no new question can be asked there today either...
I'm wondering whether we can create a socket to a printer and send the characters there directly... Anyone has experience on this?

Files hanging in print queue. Reboot seems only way to release to print device
The tech from the Windows Forum suggested I should post my problem here because you folks have better expertise.
My OS is Win 7 Pro. Have three output devices. Two hang files in the print queue. Third is an early 90's vintage HP Laserjet. Works flawless.
All devices are connected to our ehternet and Dell server. Other users do not experience the problem my desktop unit suddenly has encounted.
1. Ricoh Model C5501 with Fiery (Had on the network for two years, no problem until recent.
2. No hardware or softwware changes, although the problem started happening after a late December or Early January Windows update. Only thing I know . Coincidence? Maybe
3. Computer is on a domain network
4. Sometimes I get a message out of the system tray that tells me the document failed to print, but there is no message number. Other devices no message at all.
The files just fail to print or released from the print queue.
I can open the print queue and delete the files or cancel printing without a problem.
Tried stopping and restarting the print spooler. No help. Files still in print queue.
Re-booting the computer will release the files from the print queue. That has been my only dastardly work around.
Could my print spooler files be corrupted? Could a Windows update have changed my environment or written a file to cause this scenario?Hi Robison,
Could you please tell us what update have you installed recently? since this issue only occurred after installing this update, Maybe something installed in your system conflicts with it, in order to find out whether this is a culprit, I suggest you uninstall
this update for a test.
Plaese also keep the latest drivers for the printers or just reinstall the drivers.

I understand that you that when you are printing from your Android device the scale of the printed copy is 50% of what it should be. One options is to use a third party app that is available to you, and would work with your necessary requirements.

Personal File Sharing and Printer Sharing difficulty
I hope someone can help me, this is really irritating.
I have an Intel iMac running OS X 10.4.11 and a motley band of other computers, Mac and Windows. For the past few months, I haven't been able to use Personal File Sharing or Printer Sharing to connect to the iMac. Some details:
1) Everything used to work about 6 months ago, but stopped... I don't know exactly when it stopped and I don't remember any installations/updates/etc that happened around that time.
2) I can't connect from a OS X 10.3 Powerbook to the iMac, but I can connect from the iMac to the Powerbook.
3) None of my Windows computers are able to do anything.
4. All of the computers have no trouble connecting to the Internet.
5. I don't know if this means anything, but the iMac beeps as soon as the desktop appears on startup and right before the desktop disappears on shutdown.
Does anyone have any ideas? Everything seems to be set up properly... the Sharing control panel shows that all Personal File Sharing, Windows Sharing, and Printer Sharing are all running.

1. Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
2. Find the IP of the iMac in it's Network Pref Pane>TCP/IP tab. In finder, select Go menu>Connect to Servers..., then on the PB, type in afp://ip.of the iMac, like...
afp://10.0.1.5
afp://192.168.1.3
3. From Windows®, try...
smb://10.0.1.5
smb://192.168.1.3
5. Open Console as soon as it boots up, check for meaningful messages. -
PDF files merging on print command from windows desktop

I have an application from which I want to genarate PDF documents. The application is installed on my personal desktop. To test the process, I downloaded the Adobe PDF converter driver (free download version) and installed the same on my PC. I used control panel to change my deafult printer settings on my PC as this new PDF converter driver.
Now I logged to my application , where I can select the list of documents to be printed. The application always uses default printer of the PC on which its installed. Hence all the documnets got created as individual PDF files on my desktop. This was great.
However my ultimate requirement is when I select a list of documents using my application and give it for print at one shot, all the documents should come as a single PDf file rather individual files. Or else you can define my requirement as any no of dcouments given for print at one go (or one session) must be generated as 1 single PDF file. Is it possible to adjust the PDF converter driver in some way to accomplish this
I made further investigation into this and found Adobe Acrobat pro 9 is a good software to generate PDF. Will purchasing this and installing this s/w solve my current problem. Please advise.Hi Leonard,

The application which prints documents is a simple MS access database. This is available on users personal desktop. As soon as the user opens the MS access, it is programmed in such a way that, the access database runs as a program. It uses DSN to connect to the sybase database and get the details of documents that are pending for print.
At this point MS accesses database starts an itretive process, fetches the data from sybase , calls the correct report template in MS Access , populates it and prints the report using the default printer on which the database resides. Thus it prints the document one by one. By setting the default printer to Adobe PDF converter, we were successful in creating PDF documents rather than printing to paper , but the disadvantage was each document got printed to one file each.
The whole process is coded as VBA module of MS access. my question is by using an API from Adobe SDK, will I be able to make changes in the VBA code of MS access database so that all files requestd for print comes out as a single PDF file.
