Preparing photos for iPhone 4 - resolution and aspect ratio

Is there an optimum photo size when preparing photos for display on the iPhone 4 or does the iPhone optimize the size automatically upon import? Also, what is the recommended aspect ratio?

Dan, I did a quick check with one of my pictures. Normally I prepaired my photos in Photoshop to a size 1920px : 1280px with embedded Color Profile (sRGB) for iPhone 4. Then I save it in a folder. With iPhoto I import to a album then sync with iTunes. Now for a test, i sent one photo from the iPhone via email to me, opened in Photoshop to see any difference to the original photo on my computer. It´s the same size and same quality. Only the color profile is not embedded. Maybe iPhoto-iTunes does a small color correction for the iPhone display.

Could somebody please help me with my problem?
I am creating a slideshow, using iMovie '08, for a party I will be attending. I am going to make copies for several guests but I am lost on the details. The master copy of my project is 1920x1080 HD. So, in what resolution and aspect ratio should I make my guest copies given that each guest will have a different television and aspect ratio setting?

Send the file to iDVD and create standard definition DVD's.

  • Display resolutions and aspect ratio's

    Two questions:
    1. Is there a way to get the aspect ratio of the screen?
    2. Is there a way from within Java to take over the entire screen and set the screen resolution without using DirectX?

    hi!
for your first problem you can reffer to Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getScreenSize() after that you can easily calculate the ratio..

  • Best way to prepare photos for iPhoto printed book

    Hello,
I was wondering what would be the best way to prepare photos for iPhoto printed book on a Macbook Pro so to achieve the most realistic results to what's on the screen
ie. which software should I use to change photos from RGB to CMYK, photoshop or iPhoto itself. I'm guessing maybe the autofix feature in iPhoto? (I don't have Aperture)
Secondly, which monitor color setting should I set the screen at? I'm guessing it's either Apple RGB or Colour LCD, maybe even ColorMatch RGB?
Any any other tips that people can give in achieving the most realistic results to what you have on the screen when your printed iPhoto book gets sent back. I don't want the mid tones to disappear or become too bright because the gamma and color settings were different to what they use at the other end.
    Many thanks.

    Hi,
The situation has changed a little, our original photos are in RAW format and some of them are slightly over saturated in the higher tones.
I've read on other threads that it is a good idea to run the 'Enhance' tool on all photos before sending the iPhoto Book away.
Since iPhoto's 'Enhance' tools seems to do a lot of helpful things like sharpen, adjust the levels, etc it also seems to notch the contrast up and this would prove destructive for the lighter and darker tones not captured by the camera's dynamic range.
So as I've been advised it's best to use Apple's own tools before sending the iPhoto Book away, so I'm going to download the trial of Aperture.
Does anyone have any more recommendations on which monitor colour profile setting to use etc. I've also read that iPhoto prints best from JPEGS so the RAW will obviously need changed. Will Aperture automatically save to Profile name: Camera RGB Profile after I've done some editing there?
What would be the best way to prepare RAW images in aperture where some of them might need an Image Overlay in Photomatix then imported back to Aperture for printing an Apple/iPhoto style Book?
    Many thanks

  • Sent photos from iPhone to email and messenger on iPad intercepted but now will not let me see them. Help?

Sent photos from iPhone to email and messenger on iPad intercepted but now will not let me see them. Help?

If you sent the photos directly from the Photos app, it is quite possible that you selected Message rather than Mail when you emailed them to yourself. I assume that is how they ended up in the Messages app. I also assume that you no longer have the old phone or you could just email them to yourself again. Is that a correct assumption? If you cannot access the photos on the old phone any longer, and you can see them in the messages app randomly, try closing the Messages app completely and reset the device and then see if the photos reappear.
In order to close the Messages app, you have to drag the app up from the multitasking display. Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to Messages and then swipe "up" on the app preview thumbnail to close it.
Next, reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

  • Iphoto has been importing photos for over an hour and i can't get it to stop. can't stop importing and can't shut down computer.

iphoto has been importing photos for over n hour and I can't get it to stop.  Can't get out of iphoto and can't shut down computer.

iPhoto works best when the source (Pictures folder) is on a different disk drive than the iPhoto Library is on.
And you need to have enough free disk space to work with, the faster the better.
Also, do not keep your media folders and those in your home folder on the same drive as the system, also another bottleneck.
Until or unless you have everything on 1400MB/sec SSD PCIe controller, you want
    System boot drive
Media and data folders and such
    scratch
    backup
    etc
I put iPhoto on an SSD off an SSD PCIe Sonnet Tempo card
If you stop- it, you will need to trash the Library it was creating.
Reading and writing to/from the same hard drive will be slow.
You don't mention which Mac, or how large you are trying to import etc
Also the support page and link to the iPhoto Commuinity is off this page:
    http://www.apple.com/support/iphoto
Take a look in Activity Monitor. See what the % being used for iPhoto, how many pageouts, how much free space on the various disk drives, and how much RAM do you have installed?

  • Multiple Renditions for iPhone 3/4 and iPhone 5

I need to create a single folio viewer iPhone app with multiple renditions for iPhone 3/4 and iPhone 5. What is the best way to go about this?

You can't create a single folio viewer for iPhone. You'll need to create a multi-folio viewer, and it must be iPad+iPhone combined. There's no option for iPhone-only.

They don't let you downgrade.  You have to eat what Apple tells you to and think what they tell you to.  If you liked the older software better than tough ****.  You know what you should do??  You should throw away that garbage that Apple has sold you that they call a phone and get something by anyone else because no one else regulates what you get to do and say about your phone in such an extreme manner.  Not being mean to you friend.  Just know that as long as Apple is answering your questions that you will never get a definate answer and at best you will get something that you don't like but have to get used too.

  • Using Win 10 there is a need for an app to determine the full device display area and aspect ratio programitically; the dimensions are needed to create full-screen bitmap.

While Windows.Current.Bounds returns the application windows size, in order to create a full-screen bitmap my app would need to retrieve the full display area  of the device. I cannot even get the aspect ratio.
Pre-Win10, using Windows.Current.Bounds I can create a bitmap of whatever size application window the user is seeing. When the user is showing my app at full screen, I can therefore get the full display area and aspect ratio of the device and create a full-screen
    bitmap.
With Win10, the user would need to know to hide the taskbar and also display at full-screen before an app can retrieve the display area and aspect ratio using Windows.Current.Bounds.
Before Win10 it's obvious to the user that full-screen is or is not being used. When I create the bitmap, I create it to fit the application window. When the app is displayed full screen, the bitmap will be full screen. Also, the app starts full-screen so
I can detect the display area at startup if I need to.
With Win10, to the user the app "looks like" it is full screen with the taskbar displayed even though it's not really full screen.
I believe that in Win10 determining the full display area will be useful and not just retrieving the application window size.

  • Quality and aspect ratio with FCE and iPhoto

Project started by importing hundreds of slides shot by different cameras with difference settings. Slides were imported into i-photo where I used the slideshow function to make several segments.  As I was choosing the photos and dragging them into slideshows I cropped them all into 16x9 ratio so they would all be uniform.  I then sent to QuickTime movie using the built in iPhoto export button and selected “custom export” setting with DV/DVCPRO-NTSC compression with quality set to “Best” and aspect ratio to 16x9.
Then imported into FCE and did serious editing (music, effects, titles, etc.).  When finished I tried exporting as both a QT self-contained movie and QT conversion (using DV/DVCPRO and 16:9) but the quality is terrible and when I make a iDVD the picture is squeezed and distorted into a 4:3 ratio despite the fact that the IDVD is set to 16:9. I have spent over a month on this project and have fellow travelers waiting for my “creative” touch.  Can anyone tell me where I went wrong on both aspect ratio and quality? Thanks.
PS: Am using MacBook Pro, OS 10.7.4 FCE 4.0.1 and iPhoto-11 9.3.2

    Hi
I'm not shure - but I can share my thoughts
I tried exporting as both a QT self-contained movie and QT conversion (using DV/DVCPRO and 16:9)
I DO NEVER - Use Export as QuickTime CONVERSION
I DO - Share as QuickTime .mov - straight off
I had problems with 16x9 until I understood that
    • I had to select type of project as WideScreen in FC
    • Browser Window in FinalCut E and Pro - can extend far to the Right with several Columns. One Column states Anamorphic. When set my material to this. THEN introduced it into TimeLine. Can not be done in after hand.
    • Export as above
    • In iDVD there are TWO places to set 16x9
    - When creating a NEW iDVD Project - SELECT --> WideSrceen
    - In iDVD Project / Projectinfo [ Shift+cmd+I ]- ALSO set 16x9

  • Preparing photos for PDF Web Documents

    Hi,
I am a newcomer to InDesign but use Photoshop.
If I put together an InDesign (CS3) document for a company website, and this document is to be viewed online or be available for download, should I prepare the images at 300 dpi / ppi or 72? I am concerned about the image quality when people download the brochure and print them off. Should one be at 72 (or higher) for viewing online and another at 300 if for download?
I've tried to research this but only seem to find answers for sending photos via email (Save for Web etc) and can't dind anything specific to preparing InDesign documents for use on the web.
    Appreciate your help.
    Philby

Resolution doesn't exist on the web, only pixel dimensions, so the quality of the image doesn't change when you change the resolution.
In print, however, you are working with physical dimensions into which you must fit the pixels. Higher resolutions (i.e. more pixels fit into the space) tend to look better. Keep in mind that the "effective resolution," that is the scaled value at the print dimensions, is the only one that counts. Captured size and resolution are meaningful only in as much as they allow you to calculate the limits to which you can scale without serious degradation. Up-sampling in Photoshop almost never works.
The rule of thumb is that effective resolution should be twice the half-tone line screen of the output. Since 150 LPI is a very standard screen for offset litho on coated stock you get the de facto 300 PPI standard, but the truth is that required resolution is highly dependent on printing method and intended viewing distance, and two times line screen is just a guideline to insure enough data -- not a minimum -- and as little as 1.4 times will often give satisfactory results, particularly on a device which uses FM screening rather than a conventional halftone dot, like a desktop inkjet printer.
My rule of thumb for desktop devices is 200 ppi is nice, 180 ppi is adequate, and as low as 100 ppi will probably work, though it won't look like fine art.
I do a few jobs that have both web and printed versions. I used to do two PDFs for the web -- a screen-only version and a "printable" version -- but over time I've found that even the version intended for viewing only (downsampled to 75 ppi during export) prints on desktop devices at a quality the average user wouldn't distinguish from the printable version at 150 ppi downsampling.

  • What's happening here: iCloud Photos preparing photos for 'Photos' app?

This morning I came back from a weekend trip to Prague, where I took a number of photos with my iPhone 6. On my Mac I fired up iCloud Photos to see if everything was imported properly. That was about an hour ago. Since then I am presented with this screen, saying something like:
    "Welcome to Photos app.
With Photos app you may save your whole iCloud Photo Library ...
Preparing photos ... This may take a few minutes.
... will be continued when you leave iCloud.com."
However, with Yosemite 10.10.2 I don't have the new Photos app for Mac on my iMac!
    Now what is happening here?

I even liked Apples error messages , because most of them were so helpful ... But now the smart guys at Apple seem to be following a more obfuscating strategy, at least sometimes.
I suspect the maintenance work on iCloud Photo Library this weekend has been in preparation for the big life event today - then all will be revealed:   http://www.apple.com/live/

  • Need help changing size and aspect ratio for 500+ images

Thank you for reading this! I have about 500 images of people in different poses. They're all extracted on a transparency as PNGs. They vary in aspect ratio, dimensions and position of the person within the frame - for some the feet are very close to the bottom of the frame and for some, they're higher up. I need to equalize all 3 of these qualities, so that if superimposed, they look like a video unfolding with the same zoom. My ideal size would be 800x800 at 300ppi.
Is there a way to batch even a part of the process and keep the png format? I had the images in PSD initially but they were too massive so creating catalogs with them was prohibitive.
If not possible to do a batch, what would be the best (easiest) and fastest way to do it? I'm thinking that maybe creating some template where an oval shape the size of the head can help create consistency of the size of the person and a line that helps set up the distance from the bottom?
I so appreciate any help you have to offer. Part of my problem is that I don't know what these processes are called so I don't even know what to search for. If you can even name the actions that I need, it would be of great help. I already paid a designer to do the extraction and they were supposed to do this formatting as well and they didn't so my budget is shot. I'm hoping that if I understand what the steps are, I can do them myself.
    Thank you!

If you download my crafting actions package you can record an action that uses one of my plug-in scripts to do that process. You could then batch that action and process your 500 png image files.

Step 6 Align Layer s to selection horizontal center
    Step 7 Select bottom Layer
    Step 8 delete current layer

Step 11 File Automate>Fit Image.  In dialog enter width and height 800
Step 12 Image size in the dialog uncheck Resample and enter 300 in the resolution field.
I'm sure the should work you mane not need the copy paste and it depends on how Photoshop treats the PNG layer the canvas size or just the pixels.
    This may also work
    Step 1 Select all

Step 3 Align Layer s to selection horizontal center
