Prevent automatic removal of the Spotlight index due to low disk space

I am guessing that when disk space runs low, it automatically deletes the Spotlight index to make room for virtual memory. Then when space becomes available it reindexes. But I'm not sure about that.
Since my MacBook Air SSD is only 128 GB, I often work with little free disk space and the re-indexing drives me crazy.
I tried to disable Spotlight, remove its index and reindex. Also check filesystem and repair permissions. In diagnostic reports (~/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/) nothing about reindexing is mentioned.
You can say that I should control the amount of free space but also should be another way. Disabling Spotlight isn't the option.

You can say that I should control the amount of free space .....
Then I will
See if you have Time Machine Local Backups taking up space, and turn it off with:
     sudo tmutil disablelocal
Also consider turning off hibernate mode

Not sure if that's the case, but low disk space can be causing issues.  What % of your HD is free?

  • When does a mountet network drive goes from green to red in colour due to low disk space?

    Hi,
I have a number of network shares on MS 2008 R2 servers, that my users have mountet on their Win7 PC's.
What is the limit for when a mountet network drive goes from green to red on the users PC, due to
    low disk space.
My guess is below 10% but I can not
    find any confirmation of this
    anywhere online
    Kind regards,

    Hi,
As you mentioned, the red bar will display when the drive has less than 10% space.

  • Finder fails to open when starting up macbook pro due to low disk space (possibly)

    Dear forum,
I have a Macbook Pro (13") running snow leopard and have a partitioned hard drive (half OS X and half Windows 7). This morning I was using the Mac side and was running low on disk space (very low) so I was moving desktop files into folders to free up some space. I restarted the computer to see what the free space was but the computer stopped/froze at the desktop image (no folders or dock appeared. I restarted the computer many times but the finder never opens and all I see is the desktop wallpaper. I donnected usb drives and put in dvds but the finder never appears so I cn do nothing but shut down and start up.
I ran Disk Utility but it found no problems with the disk. I do not have a backup of the important file forlders on my drive and due to low disk space I am worried to reinstall and archive the OS since there may not be enough disk space to archive (only about 220 mb free on the apple side when I am in windows using bootcamp).
Does anyone know what happeded to my machine? Is there such low disk space that finder had an issue? I have started on such low memory before.
What does Archive actually do when reinstalling OS X? Does it make a copy of the HD files and folders or does it simply reinstall the operating system piece by piece while protecting the files and folders that I wish to save?
Thanks for all your help and sorry for the length of the writing (I wanted you to understand all before replying).

    Solved
By chance I got itunes to pop up (running hands over keys blindly) and with it the apple menu icon so I had access to my recently used items and so I could delete images from iphoto and thus bring the free disk space up above zero and then the dock/folders and finder came back....I have just backed up my important files......feeling better now
Any advice on how to more quickly handle this type of issue next time?
    Thanks.

  • MSDTC Service Interrupted due to Low Disk Space in MSDTC Log drive (Cluster 2008)

    Hi,
I am working on SQL Cluster 2008 along with MSDTC service configured for the purpose of Distributed transactions.
I was looking into cluster logs and found that there is fail over happened of MSDTC service. I have analyzed the event viewer logs and found the MSDTC service interrupted at particular time and same was restored automatically. Below is the
    details of MSDTC logs captured:
Event ID: 4103, Source MSDTC Client 2
Description: Service: MSDTC$d02c9ba0-70c4-4b72-994c-30170ab14f2d is still running. Attempt to cleanup the service has failed.
I have gone through the Health status of server and found the cause of Service interrupt is due to high disk space utilization. I have verified the MSDTC log file but haven't found any error which indicates any issue from MSDTC service end.
Generally MSDTC log consuming 4 MB space and currently there is 5 GB disk space is allocated to MSDTC service.
I am still struggling to find the RCA... Please help on same.

  • Laptop keeps on rebooting after windows update configuration failure due to low disk space.

    Dear all,
My laptop keeps on restarting it self due to it cannot configure the windows update. I had tried all the solutions online including boot into safe mode, however none of this works as it keeps on going back to the windows configuration screen. I had no windows
installation disc, i tried system repair and system restore, both also not working.
I know where my problems is, it is that I had turn on the quota management system in my c drive. Thus, it had limited my disk space. I suspect that the configuration failure is due to not enough disk space.
I am here to ask, anywhere i can start my windows without the update configuration step, or how did i turn off my quota management system without getting into the windows. I tried safe mode, it  still goes to the windows configuration screen and reboots
    again.
    Please help, thanks.

    Hi,
You can access Advanced Boot Options by turning on your computer and pressing the F8 key before Windows starts.
Then choose system restore to go back to a previous status if you have a restore point.

  • Is the spotlight index stored on the boot drive or individual volumes?

    Hello!
My questions are pretty simple, and are sumarized here (from the block of text below):
First, if I have several external hard drives, is the Spotlight index file for each drive stored on the external hard drive, or on OS X's boot drive?
Secondly, if it's stored on the boot drive, can I copy these files to another Tiger-running Mac to eliminate the need to re-index the hard drives? Where do I find them?
Third: Leopard's Spotlight has quite a few new features. Even if the Tiger index files are stored on the external drive, will it need to re-index the drive to support the new feature set?
    Now for the long explenation:
I have been preparing to upgrade my Powerbook to Leopard within the next month or two, and as such, I bought a new hard drive to dedicate one of my old drives to Leopard and Time Machine. Because I have three extrernal hard drives, I needed to move about 500 GB of data between the thee drives to make room for what was on the now-dedicated drive. Of course, this requires that Spotlight re-index the "new" drives.
Today, I left all of the drives attached to my old G4, running Tiger, while it sits there indexing the three drives, totaling around a terrabyte of external storage. Because Spotlight tends to hog all of the available CPU time, and the G4 should be done indexing the drives, it would save me a lot of time if I could copy the index files over from the G4 to my Powerbook to avoid indexing them all over again. That is, if the index files are not on the external drives already. If they are on the G4's boot drive, where do I find these files?
Finally, I plan to reformat the internal hard drive of my Powerbook when I install Leopard - I make a habit of doing a fresh install for every major upgrade (eg, 10.3, 10.4, 10.5, etc). To estimate the amount of time needed to upgrade, I'd be nice to know if Leopard will need to re-index the files on the external drives - even if Tiger's spotlight index is stored on the externals - for Leopard's new Spotlight features. Will it need to re-index? I would assume that until Leopard arrives, most people wouldn't know this, of course.
    Thanks a bunch,
    -Dan

Each drive's Spotlight index is located on that drive.

  • Isn't the Spotlight Index File a Massive Security Threat?

I'm wondering about the concept that Spotlight makes a really deep search -- and record -- of all user-created text files on your computer.
In order for Spotlight to know that a file called "My Personal Stuff.rtf" contains the words "bank", "account", "number", "1234-567890" it needs to copy each of those keywords into the Spotlight index. That means in effect that Spotlight is making a *complete copy* of *all words* in *all text documents* ever on or temporarily connected to your computer, except for un-searched words like "the", "and", etc.
If you've ever plugged your thumb drive into a public Mac somewhere, Spotlight got to work and copied all the (key-) words in every file on your thumb drive into the Spotlight index on that computer.
If you're happy that at least you had Filevault turned on when your laptop with the big corporate secrets and list of thousands of people's personal info got stolen -- there was also a non-Filevaulted Spotlight index on that computer with all the contents of every document extracted as keywords, for the sophisticated cyber criminals to pore over.
Of course, you can turn off Spotlight indexing -- if you never want to be able to find a file on your computer even by file name... on your own computer at least. Not on that other computer you're plugging your drive into.
Is there something I'm missing here?

yes, you are. spotlight index for a drive is kept on that drive. it's not copied to any other drive. that also applies to virtual volumes contained in disk images like a filevaulted home directory. that is, spotlight index for a filevaulted home directry is stored inside the sparse bundle with that home directory. nobody else has access to it and when you are not logged into a filevaulted account there is no trace of the spotlight index for it on the system.

If you go to Settings > General > Usage, it will provide you with a list of what apps are using the most data on your iPhone. Then you will have a sense of where you can remove data if you need to.

  • Powershell script to get the low disk space on the servers...

    Hi,
We have many SQL & Sharepoint servers running on windows server. I need some Powershell script to get the low disk space on those servers and it should send an mail alert saying "Disc d:\ have less than threshold 15% free space".
    Awaiting for response.

you should be able to use this powershell script which you can run as a scheduled task.
just change the details at the start of the script to point the script to the right location to create log files. you will need to have a plain text file containing a list of server names or ip addresses that you want to check drive space on.
    # Change the following variables based on your environment
#specify the path to the file you want to generate containing drive space information
    $html_file_dir = "\\server\share\DriveSpace"
#specify the path and file name of the text file containing the list of servers names you want to check drive space on - each server name on a seperate line in plain text file

  • Error: Index Build Failed - Insufficient Disk Space

I am unable to create a full-text index for a set of PDF files (Full Text Index with Catalog function).  The initial build worked a few months ago, but all attempts at a rebuild are met with the following:
Error: Index Build Failed - Insufficient Disk Space
I have over 5GB of disk space. I have cleared my general temp folder.
I am using Acrobat XI Pro Version 11.0.10.32.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    "5GB of disk space"
Disk space is the space on the Hard Disk Drive.
A 5GB HDD, in today's computer environment, is effectively so small as to be next to nothing.
Perhaps you have 5GB of RAM?
That'd indicate a 64-bit computer (if in Windows). But, Acrobat (in Windows) is a 32-bit application and as such cannot make use of the extra RAM a 64-bit computer can carry.
The alert/error speadks to "disk space" which is the space available on the HDD.
If your computer's HDD has about at or less than 12-15 % space available you'll need to make more available (defrag or whatever) or you'll need to move up to a larger HDD.
    Be well...

My computer improperly shut down while I was editing large files.  I had to alt-ctrl-del to shut down. Upon rebooting I received the message "low disk space" My windows drive now has only 75 MB of free disk space which is critically low. My c drive is a 300 GB drive and used for my programs only.  I am guessing that with the improper shut down the temporary files were left.  Is there a way I can manually clear the temporary files.  When I ran disk clean up in Windows system tools it did not show a large number of files. I cleaned out the files that were there and still my c drive shows the 75 Mb free.
    Thank you. Carolyn

Sure would be nice if Photoshop would clean up it's orphaned temporary files.  As far as I recall it used to do so...  Why was this changed?
At the moment, with CS5, if you have a Photoshop crash you WILL have a multi-gigabyte file left on your hard drive, and subsequent runs of Photoshop will not clean them up.
Found just now in my D:\ folder:  Photoshop Temp144397513436   4.5 GB
Not a big deal if you have 2 TB free, but not everyone does.
Of course, if Photoshop didn't crash in the first place, this would be much less a problem.

  • My C drive is 19.5 GB. xp sp3 took 5.05 GB.Firefox also installed here . There's no room for new downloaded files. So I changed the save to option in another drive. Still when downloading large files 'low disk space' message shown.

suppose I want to download a 4 or 5 GB file,in C:/ there is usually 2 or 3 GB left.So I changed the directory of saved files to E:/.Still low space problem occurs and the newly downloaded file is not saved.A low disk space message is shown. Why is this showing? How to resolve this?

in options under the "general" tab change the download folder,if that does not help change the option to "ask every time".I recommended to use DAP to download your files its great and accelerates your speed quite a lot.
