Preview changes PDF forms

I am using Preview in order to fill out PDF forms. With pre-Lion I was used to save a filled version and keep the original version untouched. Lion's AutoSave permanently changes the original version.
How can I refrain Preview from changing an original PDF?

etresoft, changing the file attributes to "lock" is what I tried before (I did it with cmd-i).
However, Preview insists on AutoSave and o nly allows me to make a duplicate. Unfortunately, this duplicate is not identical to the original form, e.g. option fields do not work anymore.
Preview even ignores when I change the user permission to "only read". This is frustrating and Lion's AutoSave breaks with what longtime users are used since the very beginning of computers. I already fear that other software will adopt AutoSave.

  • Using XML files created with PDF form in Excel

I have returned survey XML files created by a survey form using Lifecycle Designer. Have been unsuccessful in the importing of multiple XML files into Excel as a 2nd file just overlays the 1st file's data.
I have been reading a number of posts that most likely tells me that sending the PDF survey form out via e-mail and getting the returned XML file back via e-mail was not the best way to do it. Unfortunately it is what I have to deal with now, so two questions I have:
    1. Is there a known method for importing all of these XML files into any Office program more easily than what I have been dealing with, and
    2. What method would be best used if I have surveys to send out but have no web server or any other tool other than my local software on my PC for collecting and compiling the returned data?

Are you clicking the Send Email button while previewing the pdf form?
-> If yes, have you specified preview data on Form Properties panel?
-> If yes, does your form contain Table or repeatable subforms?
If all the above point are true, you will get multiple data in your xml.

  • Data in XML files from emailed PDF form

I have set up a form based on a template andam having problems with the resulting XML. When I click on the e-mail to test it and I open the XML file in Excel, I get multiple rows of data - it's almost like it stores the data from previous completions of the form. What am I doing wrong?

  • PDF form text fields' options change when opened in READER on a MAC.

I created a PDF form using Adobe X PRO. All fields are UNCHECKED for Property/Options/ "scroll long text". I save and distribute the form as a "reader extended pdf/enable additional features" so it can be saved and returned using READER.
When a Mac user opens the extended form in Adobe READER, ALL the text fields change to scroll. When he returns the completed form to me, every text field, even signature and date fields, are changed to scroll text.
What is happening in the transition from PC to MAC?

Preview is the default PDF viewer on the Mac. It should never be used with PDF forms. Just let them know that they should use Adobe Reader. Provide a link or URL where it can be downloaded and let them know that it's free.
There are things you can do so that it doesn't work in Preview, but it involves some scripting. If interested in this approach, post again.

  • HT2506 Font size filling out a PDF form in Preview?

Hello. Anyone know if I can change Font size when filling out a PDF form in Preview? If so, how? Thanks a lot.

Whilst in the Preview application, press "Shift - Command - A" (⇧⌘A) simultaneously to show the markup toolbar, or click View, and select "show markup toolbar". There is an icon "A" near the right hand side of the now visible markup toolbar, click this icon to reveal all the font options.

  • How do I change the order of the fields in my pdf form?

I am using pdf. form I made in Acrobat and distributing with Adobe FormsCentral.  We use a table format for our teachers to fill out their field trip schedules and therefore use many different fields.
How can I change the order of the fields (not for tabbing, we figured that out)...so that when we receive our notification email, I can see the inforamtion in a specific order (Date, Time, School, Program, etc).
We would also like this same order to appear in the "View Responses" table.  I know you can drag and drop the order in the table but we have over 100 fields and that is going to take a really long time.
    Please help???

What do you mean by the "order they appear in the pdf structure"?  What is the "Pdf structure"?
thank you for your help... this is really upsetting, as I thought we finally found a solution with Adobe Forms : (
We really need the fields to report back in a specific order and wouldn't have time to rearrange over 100 fields with every form that is submitted. We receive about 10-20 different forms a day (same form layout, just some of the fields will have to be prefilled depending on school/teacher reservation... so we have to name each form a different name, for each school).
Thank you again and maybe one day they will change that.  Is there anyway to set it up in the web verison of Adobe FormsCentral to look similar to the table we have created?

  • Preview does not sum column data in PDF forms

Preview is way better than Acrobat for most purposes, but it has some basic limitations that just make it hard to use. for example I have to use this form that asks you to enter $ in a table, however Preview does not sum the column, it just puts a "0" in. Why doesn't Preview add? Plus, this default behaviour makes it harder to paste in my own number as there is a zero in the way. At least it would be nice if it could just remove the 0 and leave me with an editble section. Is this just the product of a badly created PDF form or, as I suspect, a limitation of Preview?

I'm having the exact problem. I have a fillable PDF form that has many checkboxes. Saving the pdf (doesn't matter whether it's 'Save', 'Save All', or 'Save As' under the File menu) will clear/reset the checkboxes in the file.
Anyone know of a workaround for this? Or, is Apple fixing this soon? I really don't want to get Acrobat Pro 9 (well, I don't think it's compatible with Snow Leopard yet anyway)
If you'd like a sample PDF file to try it out, let me know.
    Thanks.

  • How do you change the default return email when distributing a PDF form

    Hello everyone,
I am trying to distrube a pdf form as a customer survey to various client/contact emails.  As a test, I chose to distribute the form, filled in the form distribution information and I send the form to myself. However, when I filled it out and chose 'submit form' it prompted me with the return email address that I know is incorrect and want to change.
As the author of the form, I need to change the default return email address, but there is no option to do so when I choose to distribute the pdf form  or any new form that I create (only prompted me the very first time I chose to distribute a form).
Does anyone know how to change the return email address and information for form distribution?  Can someone please help me with this?
    Thank you very much!
    -Ryan

The email address that it uses it what is set in the Identity user preference: Edit > Preferences > Identity > Email Address
so change it there before you distribute.

  • Can I create a PDF form with a field for adding/changing Photos?

Does anyone have a solution to the following problem?
I would like to be able to make a PDF form that others in the office can use to fill in a particular inventory and model number.  (Fields, Easy)
Then have a field where they can replace the PHOTO of the item referred to by the inventory and model number.
Is this possible using Acrobat professional? Can the document then be saved as, or exported somehow from there?
I know this is probabably easy to do in Word, but can a photo be changed on a PDF and saved as?
Thanks for any help or suggestions!
    DaddyOfZed

It will make it possible for them to select a new photo. Will you ever want to extract the photo from the form to be used elsewhere?
In order to set this up in Acrobat, you can create a button to display the image, set its layout to something other than "Label only", and add the following JavaScript to the Mouse Up action:
// Prompt user to select an image
    event.target.buttonImportIcon();
For the PC users, Acrobat Standard is sufficient for this.

Filling up a pdf form which I received as email. I opened it on my adobe reader 11 and filled up the highlighted fields. Yet when I click on the send via mail it says changes will not be included. How do I send the form with changes?
The add annotations field shows as not allowed in the security options. So how do I send this form back with the changes??

I think you you need to click 'save' first, then it is saved to acrobat, where it will prompt to send.

  • PDF form filled in Preview does not display correctly in Adobe Reader/Acrobat?

I recently received a PDF form from my bank, and filled in the fields and affixed my signature. Saved the form. The recipeint of the form opened the PDF in Acrobat or Adobe Reader and the fields don't display the filled in form, unless you click in the field. After you click out of the field, the entry disappears. When you print the form from Reader or Acrobat, the fields are blank, but the signature prints.
Before saving the form from Preview, the fields appear normally in Reader/Acrobat.
Running Lion 10.7 and Preview 5.5.
    Anyone else have this happen?

I've since found out that there is somewhat of a "fix" that addresses a way to see the form entries in Acrobat, but doesn't resolve the problem the Preview creates. There is a script available on the Adobe forum that can be installed into Adobe Acrobat: http://blogs.adobe.com/pdfdevjunkie/2009/11/script_to_fix_mac_osx_previewa.html. The link and also explains the problem which should really be addressed by Apple. After installation, it will appear in the Edit menu of Acrobat. Once you open a Preview form, selecting "Fix Field Appearances" will repair the form so that the entries are visible.
Preview will still create bad forms, but this script will allow them to be visible in Acrobat. Unfortunately if you're sending a form to someone, there's no way to know if the recipient is using Preview or Acrobat and whether they even know about the problem. So you would have to create the form in Preview, open it in Acrobat, fix the field appearances and re-save. So it's not really a fix, just a work-around. Still don't use Preview for this reason.
I don't know if the script works with Adobe Reader, there's no mention that it does or doesn't in the forum entry.

  • Prevent Mac users from opening a PDF form in Preview

When I create an AcroForm, it does not behave the same when someone fills it out in Preview, and when I receive the completed form back from them, some of the information in the form fields is missing.
Is there a way to prevent Mac users from opening the form in Preview? Or to give them a message that the form needs to be filled out using Reader?

You can't stop them doing it (except by standing next to their computer with a heavy stick).
You could consider having a large field on the page warning that the file is not to be used (or whatever), which is hidden using Acrobat JavaScript.
Be aware that we are now dealing with a very large set of PDF readers.
Included with computers: Mac OS Preview, Windows Reader.
    Included with browsers: Chrome, Firefox.
    Included with portable devices.
Anyone who gets a computer these days in fact gets a PDF viewer which is bad with forms. You need to give them a compelling reason to download extra software. (Or, frankly, give up on PDF forms. I think their day has passed for a general audience who could fill in a browser form).

  • End user have ability to change font style in text field of interactive pdf form?

Does the end user of an interactive pdf form able to change the font style, i.e.: make something bold or underline a word in a text field?
I am making a form with text fields and the end user would like the ability to make something bold or underline it.. I do not see anywhere in acrobat that allows styles to be changed.
I have created the form in Indesign > saved it as an interactive pdf and brought it into Acrobat.

Thank you for the quick response! Do you set this in Indesign before exporting or do you set this in Acrobat? I am in Acrobat 10.1.10 and when I go to properties it doesn't give me  'options' to choose from.
