Preview has difficulties with rotating EXIF rotated JPEGs

Ave!
I've been searching a lot here about this problem, but didn't found anything, so I decided to post here my bugreport.
If you are watching EXIF rotated JPEG images with Preview (e.g. your digital camera automatically rotates them) everything is OK, they are displayed in the correct orientation. But if you want to rotate them - well, then they don't act as the should.
Here is a sample video:
http://lka.hu/other/x/preview-rotate-bug.mov
Here are this pictures:
http://www.freeweb.hu/gk-lka/index.php?dir=GALLERY/Vegyes/Rotate_test
Their name reflects the angle which they have been rotated with.
Please (please!) correct this issue in the upcoming 10.5.3 release of OS X Leopard!

To start with, this isn't where you let Apple know about bugs. The proper place is the Bug Reporter, you access it by joining Apple Developer Connection. You can do it out here:
http://developer.apple.com/bugreporter/
There was a bug report on the Tiger version of Preview which I filed last year, it was a bit convoluted, but also involved rotation. I received a notice when they fixed it, with the release of Leopard. Here's the thread where the problem was discussed:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1111412
I just checked with a photo from my Canon digital camera, that had the orientation tag set to portait. As expected, opening with Preview displayed it in portrait view. I then rotated 90 and saved. It opened back up in Preview in landscape. Safari (which doesn't read rotation metadata) also displayed it in landscape, as did PS Elements, meaning that the rotation was applied to actual pixels, rather than just changing the metadata orientation tag. I then rotated it to 180, so it was in portrait, but upside down, and saved. It displayed upside down in Preview, Safari and Elements. Is this what you mean about a "bug"? Namely, that the rotation is actually being applied to the pixels, rather than just changing the metadata tag? If so, I'm not sure that it is a bug, or if that's the way Preview works now.

  • 2014 X1 Carbon + OneLink Pro has difficulties with dual monitors

I just got a new 2014 X1 Carbon maxed out. I also got a new OneLink Pro Hub. Everything is connected using the stock power supplies that came with the device. All drivers and firmware are current. All software that came with the system is still in place and is active. (So please take this all into consideration when suggesting what I try next)
I have two LG Flatron E2442TC displays attached to the OneLink Pro. One is attached via the DisplayPort and one is attached vis the DVI->VGA adaptor that came with the OneLink Pro.
I am running Windows 8.1 as came installed with my computer along with some Intel Display Management software that came installed.
The problem is, I can only sporadically get this configuration to work. My computer can see both E2442 displays. However, when I try to connect to these displays, I get the brilliantly informative message "The display settings could not be saved. Please try a different combination of display settings."
It seems that I can get the VGA setting working on its own. But when I add the screen connected via the DisplayPort, things don't work quite right. (but occasionally they will)
The unusual problem is that the E2442's resolution seems to be fixed to the same resolution of my main display on the laptop (2560x1440) which the E2442 cannot handle. But I cannot change the resolution - the drop down is locked.
I have also tried to use the Intel display applets rather than the Windows screen resolution control panel applet, but that software is so poorly designed that it can't even specify more than two displays and most of the time is unresponsive. (I would love it if I could rid myself of this crapware -- it's not a well designed piece of software)
Is there any solution to this problem? This $2,800 computer system should just work -- I'm wasting days of valuable time with this issue.

I have continued to try and resolve this problem.
I removed the VGA cable and DVI-D->VGA adaptor and put in a DVI-D to DVI-D cable to my monitor. So now I have one monitor going DVI-D to DVI-D and the other going DVI-D to Displayport -- both onto the one link pro.
The system continues to struggle with this. Right now, both displays are working -- but I've had this situation in the past too. It struggled through numerous reboots before it would let me connect both monitors. I was able to connect the DVI-D to DVI-D monitor fairly quickly, but the DVI-D to DisplayPort monitor took a few more tries and initially came up at 680x480 resolution which it said was the best that was supported. After a reboot, it finally let me set both monitors to the max of 1920x1440.
But, as I said before, I've been here before. The computer just seems to struggle to figure out what the monitors are capable of supporting. When I try and connect to them, it seems that it works 50% of the time and really badly fails the other 50%. Once I can't connect, it will take me hours of trying before I can connect again.
This just isn't good enough. Today, when I was explaining that I bought a new Lenovo laptop, a colleague rolled his eyes. It's hard to defend my choice when it doesn't work well.

  • I created a PDF of my book in Preview and encrypted it. When opened in Adobe Reader, it is rotated to the vertical position rather than the original landscape position. How do I fix this in Preview? I don't want my buyers to have to hassle with rotating.

I created a PDF of my book in Preview and encrypted it. When opened in Adobe Reader, it is rotated to the vertical position rather than the original landscape position. How do I fix this in Preview? I don’t want to hassle my buyers with rotating. There was no option in Preview to account for this automatic and unwanted rotation.

Then you rotate it and SAVE or SAVE AS and it will remain that way.

  • Rotating JPEG images with feh [SOLVED]

A funny thing happened to me using feh today.
It seems it can't rotate JPEG images 90 degrees (neither clockwise, nor counterclockwise). Whenever I try (with different files), feh dies with the following error message:
    Bogus virtual array access
It can do it if it's 180 degrees. It can also rotate PNG images 90 and 180 degrees without any problem.
Did someone else experience this? Is the new libjpeg to blame? Should I open a bug report?

I'm not sure feh is actively developed/maintained any more, but you could email the author* - I'm sure he'd fix something like this. If indeed it is a bug (of course). Can't check myself, yet - will do later.
Meantime check imagemagick (and the convert command), if you need an alternative.

  • Why is iphoto having trouble with rotating photos all of a sudden?

i've been using iphoto for a few years. suddenly it un-rotated all of my auto-rotated photos (which screwed up all of my face tags) and now when i upload new photos, if they auto-rotate during the upload they appear in the preview of a whole event, but if i double-click to see a vertical photo, or try to do a slideshow, i get the triangle with an exclamation point in it, indicating that something's wrong with the file. is anyone else having this trouble? or have any idea what to do?
    thanks...

I've never used the Flickr feature so don't know if that as any bearing on the problem.  if you're satisfied with the newly "fixed" library you can delete the copy of the original library that you made.
However, since you're having problems with rotated photos you might try this and see if the new library has the rotated photos displayed correctly:
Start over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1.  Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
    2. Open the library package like this.
    3. Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    4. Drag the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
If the rotated photos display correctly in this new library then the problem lies with the orther libraries being damages somehow.  You may want to stay with the new library even though the projects, i.e. books, etc. and keywords are lost.
If you have a lot of keywords in your current library and want to move them to the new library you can by doing this:
1 - open the old library and select one photo.
2 - type Command+K to brinb up the keyword pane.
3  - click on all of the keywords that are not blue so that all of the keywords are blue.
4 - export that photo to the Desktop via the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu option. Select Kind=JPEG and check the two check boxes regarding keywords, locations, etc.
5 - open the new library with iPhoto and import the exported photo from the Desktop.  That will bring in all of the keywords so that you don't have to recereate them one by one in the new library.

  • Problem with rotation and landscape mode in iOS 8

From start of iOS 8 I have got problem with rotation in my iPhone 5S 32GB as well as in my iPad mini retina 32GB. Automatical rotation to landscape mode is not working correctly. For example if you take the phone or tablet to landscape mode in base display and tap to Safari, Mail, Messages, the app will start but stay in normal mode, not landscape. Then you have to back the phone to normal portrait mode and back to landscape and only then the phone do the landscape mode. I have never seen this problem in iOS 7 or older.
Could you help me anyone with this problem? Or is the problem generally in iOS 8.
    Thanks a lot
    Jakub

Brian, thanks, but it's not a rotation lock issue - at least not relating to the rotation lock setting. It's just a general use setting. Right now i have my iPhone propped in landscape mode. If I now hit the home button, essentially returning to a portrait setting though my phone is still positioned in landscape, then open any other app that supports landscape, that app WILL NOT orient itself to landscape mode. It will stay in portrait mode. The phone has to be physically oriented to portrait, then back to landscape for the app to register landscape mode properly. This is a glitch, and not a rotation lock issue. it ought to be noted that this was not an issue in iOS 7 or any previous iteration.

    Yes:
Step 1: Delete the preview cache.
    That's it!
So, the trick is to find the preview cache.
    This document gives location:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/preference-file-locations-lightroom-41.html
To be clear: it's a folder in with your catalog and you want to delete the whole folder but nothing else.
If your catalog file path is "X:\My Catalogs\My Catalog.lrcat", then the preview cache "folder" will be:
    X:\My Catalogs\My Catalog Previews.lrdata
So the trick is to find your catalog file, and since Lr won't open your catalog and run, you can't use it to find out.
But you should be able to find it by searching your disks for *.lrcat files - do you know how to do that?
    Which OS?
If you know the name of the catalog it will help, but also: it's probably NOT in with your program files.
UPDATE: The above-mentioned document gives default name and location for preview cache, so if you haven't overridden the default, it should be right where that document said it would be - is it? (of course you need to know your user name too, but presumably you do, no?).

Ok, it's a 4 year old picture, but taken with a digital camera as jpeg...! This cannot be the problem really, but I'm despaired after trying since days...! Thank you all for any hint you've got for me!

If you asking me, I would suggest to additonally use a second storage service which also allows you to store your pictures over the 30 days period. I personally use Dropbox with automatic upload for that (https://db.tt/cMEgDUFZ), but there are also other storage services like Flickr for example.

    Hi all,
Today someone asked me if it is possible to send a mail from oracle express(so far no problem)
to all users(also no problem), with rotating advertisements on the side and bottom of the mail.
Anybody any idea how to approach this.

You mean to add in a gif file or something of that nature? It would be an animated gif, but it is possible to do that.

  • Rendering Marker and Text with Rotation

It is my understanding currently there is no support for rendering maps with rotated markers and texts. It would be nice if this functionality is supported. When will this be supported?
    Thanks

You can use the API method addTextStyle to create a dynamic text style where you can pass a size based on the map scale. But you have to compute this size on your application. Then assign this text style as your theme label style.

My project is set up with "rotation" menu intro, video, and then "rotation" on end, however, when you put DVD disc in DVD player, menu does not come up on front end, it goes straight to the video.  Is there some step I am missing?

Open your iDVD project and go into the Map mode.  Made sure the autostart bin on the left is empty.
If you find a video in that bin remove it, save the project as a disk image and check the disk image with DVD Player.  Then you can burn the disk image to disk with Disk Utilitiy at 4x for optimal burning.

  • Imagesnapshot.capturebitmapdata with rotation matrix

    Hi all,
I am not able to use imagesnapshot with rotation matrix.
I am using imagesnapshot to cpature bitmapdata from image.
My image is rotated so I want to rotate bitmapdata as per rotation.
    Here is the code.
    var matrix:Matrix = new Matrix();
    matrix.rotate(degreesToRadians(90));
    var bitmapData:BitmapData = ImageSnapshot.captureBitmapData(image, matrix);
This code is not working it gives error.
any idea why it is giving error?

    Kglad,
While the parent isn't being rotated, it used to:
Group all of the shapes together
Acts as a basis for a bitmap object
The problem occurs when I align the parentMC to the bottom and right edges of the stage. If left where the true boundary of the parentMC exists, there's a huge gap between the visible part of the shapes and the edge of the screen. If I manually adjust the parenMC, the screen size of the background is enlarged, and any object that rely on the right edge for alignment slide off screen.
The breakdown of the display objects looks like this:
    ScreenContainer
    Background Image Container
Shapes Container (holds all of the puzzle shapes)
Individual Shape Container (a movieclip that can be dragged or rotated--X and Y offset to rotate around center)
Individual Shape Subcontainer (a movieclip holds the drag handles and the shape--X and Y offset)
    Handle at each vertex
    Shape
    Tool Area
I want to rotate the Individual Shape Container (not the subcontainer) without offsetting the X and Y positions of it or the Subcontainer using a transform. My problem seems to be in assigning the center point during the transform.
    Does that make sense?

  • 5DIII pb with file mng with RAW on CF + JPEG on SD

    Hello,
I am a travel photographer and I encounter much difficulties with my workflow with the 5D Mark III.
I chose the separate recording option (NOT the multimedia option) in order to shoot RAW on CF and JPEG on SD. I use temporarily the JPEGs for on-the-go quick editing, metadata management and uploading on the internet while on travel. The RAW files will be used when I am back home. I have no intention to keep the JPEGs after, they are temporary.
The problem : when I delete a RAW file from the camera, it does not delete its JPEG counterpart or vice versa. So, I have to do the work twice.
IMHO, there are no good reasons for such a behaviour:
    1) If i want a backup on the SD card, there is the multi-media recording option for that. That´s what it is designed for. In this case, I understand that deleting from one card does not affect the other.
    2) If I delete a RAW file from the camera, what is the point having the JPEG kept on the SD ? For serious photographers (5D Mark III users), a JPEG will NEVER be a backup for a missing RAW.
    3) Implicitely Canon agree with this behaviour since when shooting RAW+JPEG on the same card, deletion affects both RAW and JPEG.
What are other users' and Canon team's point of views on this ? Can a firmware update fix this ?
    Thanks a lot,
    Yoms

    Hi Yoms,
Based on what you are describing, your camera appears to be working properly.  When both files are recorded to each memory card, they are not linked in any way.  When you delete one, it will not delete the other automatically.
We are sorry if this has caused any inconvenience.  The new firmware update is going to be released later this year.  It does not appear that this is one of the functions being changed, so whether or not it will be changed in the future is unknown at the moment.  However, we appreciate your feedback on this.  Your suggestion for this change has been noted.
