Printers and upgrades

Hello: I've been having an ongoing problem with both of my two printers (Canon and Epson), both more than three years old. My question to the Community is: if I delete and then reinstall a printer, do the upgrades that have been downloaded also reinstall, or are they lost?
Thanks,
Medren

No, the upgrades you have installed will remain. When you upgrade printer software it generally installs a PPD file in HD/Library/Printers/PPDs/Contens/Resources. Deleting a printer in your printer preferences will not affect those, or any other files.

Do I have to reinstall my printer drivers after upgrading to 10.8? I seem to have lost the ability to communicate with either of 2 wireless printers and to download pictures from my camera. (Photoshop keeps telling me it can't find the device.) Any suggestions?

Have you repaired permissions and restarted your computer after installing ML?  Checked your printer settings in System Preferences?
If Software Update does not list any updated drivers for your model printer, you should go to the printer's manufacturer website and download the drivers from there and/or contact their tech support to determine if your printer is compatible w/ML.
Read the various Knowledge Base ML printing articles.  Here are a few to get you started:
OS X Mountain Lion: If the software for your printer can’t be found
OS X Mountain Lion: Troubleshoot a USB printer
OS X Mountain Lion: Troubleshoot an AirPort printer
If none of the above work, post back w/the model of your printer and how it's connected to your computer.  USB?  Wireless?

  • Printers and Scanners preference pane does not work after Mavericks upgrade

I upgraded to Mavericks on my late 2011 MacBook Pro, and my printers and scanners preference pane stopped working. Sometimes it comes back as an error and wont open, other times it opens but the list of printers is obscured and not really showing, and it does not react normally. I tried reinstalling from System Restore with the onlie version, but that just took 6 hours but did not really help. I am going a little crazy as I cant get my Canon MX330 scanner installed and recognized. Does anyone have any ideas for me please??

I'm assuming that you're referring to the Printers & Scanners in System Preferences (not a preference pane, which is a different animal).
While I haven't experienced your issue, one thing that users find helpful is to go to System Preferences/Printers & Scanners/, and delete the printers listed by tapping on - (minus). Then, reenter the information when it's required later.

  • My Macbook pro OS 10.10.2 suddenly will not communicate with my Cannon MX890 printer.  I reset all printers and now I cannot seem to add a printer by using the Add a printer function.  Ideas?

My Macbook pro OS 10.10.2 suddenly will not communicate with my Cannon MX890 printer.  I reset all printers and now I cannot seem to add a printer by using the Add a printer function.  Ideas?

The appearance of the printer in the Default view of the Add printer window relies on a protocol called Bonjour. There have been quite a few users who upgraded to Yosemite only to find that their wifi printer is no longer visible. Until Apple resolves this issue you can add your printer using the LPD protocol. To do so you will need to determine the IP address being used by the MX890. This can be done via the touch panel under Device Settings > Network Settings.
Once you learn the IP address then on the Mac you can click to add the printer and select the IP icon. Here you can enter the IP address, set the Protocol to Line Printer Deamon and leave the Queue field blank. Then change the name to Canon MX890 and in the Use menu, browse for the Canon MX890 series driver. Then click Add to complete the printer creation.

  • Transfering data from older machine and upgrading to Leopard

Like an idiot I bought two new iMacs just a week before Leopard was announced. So I am getting the $9.95 up-to-date offer on Leopard.
My question is a matter of sequence. Does it make any difference if I fire up the new machines and transfer all my data from the older (G5) iMac first, then upgrade to Leopard when it arrives? Or should I wait and do the upgrade first, then transfer everything?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You are probably going to get all kinds of opinions on this, and I don't know how the $9.95 upgrade works. I got my MBP about a month or so before Leopard came out because my iBook died and I needed a replacement. I decided to put very little on the MBP until I was able to install Leopard. Just as well. I tried an Archive and Install, and it was immediately apparent that there were some differences--the mailbox fonts were different and the internet access settings kept changing so I had to keep resetting them to get on line. I tried loading 36 photos from a CD and got multiple copies and some other junk. After deleting all the extras, all the mail vanished from my mailboxes along with the printers and printer drivers. No telling what I did to do that! I did get my mail back, but since everything was backed up on my external HD, I decided to just do an erase and install. Things are much better now, although it was a pain to get mail working again.
But I think if I were in your shoes, I would like to upgrade first and when you feel that everything is working properly, import your data. I started with just my address book and bookmarks, and still haven't gotten everything else imported. I decided to get all the software up to date first, which will take a while with dial up.
    Hope this helps!

  • PS script to change printers and check for default

We have a large project of renaming printers due to some linux devises that do not agree with our naming convention. I am new to ps so looking for some direction.
Our current printers are say 'print$1' and we are changing to 'print1' basically just removing the dollar sign.
We have batch files for the helpdesk for new imaged machines so they will get the new names, no problem but for the people that have been here, how can I create a script that will do the following:
    1. allow me to put old printer > replace with new printer
    2. detect if old printer is default and make new printer default.
    3. only affect the printers that are currently installed on the pc
note we have multiple locations and alot of print servers.
    thank you for your help

    gaff-
I believe he wants to rename the printers on the client workstation. Group Policy can do that very easily
You can also add to your ProintManager script to have it generate the GP objects and add the users or computers to them.  Most of the time is is easier to just use ProntManager GUI unless you have hundreds of printers  If it is only a dozedn then
a non-scripter would be better off running the GUI.
We moved about 30 printers for 100 accounts in about one hour the first time we set up PrintManager.  This included an upgrade to 64 bit drivers which was the biggest issue. A rename is very much easier.  I can rename 30 probters with the GUI in
    about 2 minutes.
It is resetting the client systems that is the issue.  If they are beoing set by GP or through a login script then this, too, is easy.  If they are just attached in different ways then I recommend that Group Policy is the only way to reset them
without spending a month trying to design a script that will work for all systems.
If this is for a WS2003 spooler then you can still use Group Policy Preferences it you install the AD updates or have WS2008 domain controllers.
Placing all printers under PrintManager control is the absolute best method.
If all printers are not Windows printers - (Unix spolers or JetDirect/Network) then you will have to create a script that can find every pronter and rename it on every system.  This will be very difficult to do and will likely take quite a while to
    accomplish in a large network.
GP can install printers at the machine level and update drivers.  This will work well except if you are using non-Windows compliant printers.  I have never had this scenario work smoothly on  an older network.  This is one reason why
I do everything I can to force Admins to use PrintManager for all printers WIndows and Unix.  We also try to be sure the location awareness is enabled and that all locations are tagged in AD.  This allows users to browse easily for local and remote
printers.  We set initial default but user4s are always allowed to change the default if they want and know how.  Users are allowed to print to all "group" printers and departmental printers but not to personal printers.  In some cases
all users in a group can print to each others personal printers.
I am now working on getting wireless printers set up for use by visitors, guests and salespeople.  Every group should have a wireless printer and know the hidden SSID.  I notice that many universities and hospitals are now doing this for the convenience
of visitors. I can priont from my phone almost everywhere I go lately.
Use PrintManager.  It will save you a lot of trouble.  Once set up PowerShell can script everything very nicely.  Gaff's code will always be the easier way to do most things.
If you look in the repository/Gallery you will see many PowerShell PrintManger scripts and tools. -
I should also note that Gaff's suggestion to use WMI will only work in a login script and will not work well on system connected printers which will have to be done remotely.  Again, it all depends on how your environment is set up.
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • Have you fixed the compatibility with HP printers and Symantec yet for the latest Firefox? I am waiting before installing.

You told me to install the 3.7 version in April. It messed up both my printer and my Norton security. I downgraded successfully. I am waiting to hear that HP printers and Symantec are now compatible. You said this was their responsibility, but it is your responsibility to inform us when you have become compatible with the most common devices, security and other programs. How else would we find out except by bombing our computers by upgrading you?

It seems like Symantec has.Hope this helps-

  • I got a flashing folder with a question mark. I got a new hard drive and upgraded to 4 gigs and can't open anything or reload the operating system? Help?

I got a flashing folder with a question mark. I got a new hard drive and upgraded to 4 gigs and can't open anything or reload the operating system? Help? FYI: I have been using boot camp with windows 7 and started getting a kernal_data_Page_error and it would reboot windows, i was trying to do a chkdsk on the next reboot, but thats when i started getting this issue. I have put in a new hard drive and went from 2 gigs to 4. I can not get the computer to do anything, even the monitor does not show anything now????

    Prep your new drive:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs,) then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
After formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Install OS X.

My Ipad mini does not see my printer. my wife's ipad2 does. We both use IOS8 and upgraded at the same time. How can I remedy this?

    OK great info!
I found 2 possible ethernet to USB adapters:
By "Plugable":  USB 2.0 to ethernet LAN wired network adapter - seems this will work, but I'll contact Plugable.
    2. Apple USB Ethernet Adapter
Easily connect your MacBook Air computer to an Ethernet network with the Apple USB Ethernet Adapter. Small and light, it connects to the USB 2.0 port of your MacBook Air and provides an RJ-45 connector that supports 10/100BASE-T performance.  BUT NOT SURE IF THIS WILL WORK ON ANYTHING BUT a MacBook Air…
    One person commented:
This little gem used to be the device of choice for adding a second Ethernet interface to a Mac Mini Server and I'd been using one that way for about a year. After doing a software update to 10.6.6 it stopped working. Forewarned is forearmed – it appears that Apple is finally enforcing the MacBook Air system requirement.
    Thanks for any additional comments.

I have just bought a new computer and downloaded itunes. I plugged in my iphone and upgraded to the newest itunes/ synched etc. Now have no music or apps on the phone. Contacts, texts, photos all fine. Just all itunes content that is missiing. It isn't showing in my itunes account on my computer or on my phone. Any idea how to get it back? (No point synching with itunes on my computer as it isn't there either!)

I suggest copying your entire iTunes library to your new computer, also you might want to copy the photos you want to save. Then sync your device to the new iTunes and copy over your music, documents and photos that you want.
If you are no longer going to use the old computer you should open up iTunes on the old computer and use the menu to deauthorize it. Be sure to use the same iTunes menu on your new computer to Authorize the new one.

  • Can I remotely access HDs, printers and computers connected to APEX?

I currently have an external HD, 2 printers and a desktop (currently a dell, soon to be an iMac) connected directly to my Airport Extreme, and I have a MacBook which I connect via WiFi.
First of all, can I access my Airport Extreme remotely (for example, from work) with my MacBook?
I currently use my External HD for Time Machine backups. I also use it to store various files (one of them being my iTunes library) that I like to be able to access on both computers. Can I access this remotely to a) use for Time Machine and b) access the files stored on it?
Am I able to access my printers if I wanted to print something at home while I'm elsewhere?
Finally, once I get my new iMac, would I be able to access that as well? I would like to be able to wake it from sleep and access files stored on it, control it, etc.
If these things are in fact possible, how would I go about configuring my setup to do all this?
Edit: Bonus Question - Can I do any of the above items with my iPhone as well?
    Message was edited by: John.Kitzmiller

The easiest way to accomplish this would be to get MobileMe which will keep everything synced and allow you to access Back to My Mac to screen share your iMac at home. This would allow you to view the hard disk, assuming it is connected to the home network. As of yet, I do not believe you can back up your mac from a different network. To print from anywhere in the world you need to go to AirPort Utility and click on printers. Check share printers over ethernet port and check advertise printers globally using Bonjour. After you have done that, head over to System Preferences. Click on Print & Fax. Complete the steps necessary to set up your printer over Bonjour. (Sorry don't know the exact steps, never done it.)

  • How can I restore my iTunes library via Time Machine after an erase/install and upgrade to Snow Leopard?

    Actual problem:
I reinstalled all my programs that I need without a hitch. Meanwhile, I've been trying to recover the few files (mostly music) I actually store on my computer's hard drive as opposed to on my external HDs. I use one external HD for my graphic files and the other is strictly for Time Machine backups. I tried to recover my iTunes music, but I got a message that says: "The file: "iTunes Library.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes." I restored (I thought) my iTunes library Username/Music/iTunes." Additionally, I was going to upgrade to Mountain Lion, but I have seen that there were issues with Lion and iTunes libraries so I'm a little wary of this.
Excuse the long explanation, but I figure the problem may possibly be in the details of the weeks prior this problem:
I have recently been having issues with my iMac. I brought it in to see a Genius twice within the past month and they couldn't seem to find the problem. (It would restart Finder of it's own accord while I was using Adobe CS programs) I figured it was worth backing everything up via Time Machine and doing a complete erase/install/factory reset. I did so and had a problem again, and brought it in again, third time. The Genius did another diagnostics tests and found nothing and said my erase/install probably did the trick, but time will tell. I am, after the erase/rewrite and upgrade running Mac OS X 10.6.3 and previous to this was still running Tiger.

So, I didn't update iTunes and the rest of it after installing Snow Leopard. My stupidity, I figured that the OS was more up to date than the one I had previously so that all the programs that come with it probably were more current than the ones I was using. However, now that I have updated all my software, I am still getting the same message from iTunes that I was previously. I cannot open iTunes at all, same "The file: "iTunes Library.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes." message. I'm confused again. Checked a few other threads and whatnot and cannot seem to figure this out.

  • Quicktime for Windows -- on Vista -- opens a .mov movie once, then won't open the move and Quicktime won't even open itself.  I've installed the latest version, and upgraded it to Plus as well.

I am having trouble opening .mov videos with Quicktime on my PC with Vista.  I installed the latest version of Quicktime for Windows (V.7.7), and upgraded it to Pro.  It will open a .mov file once, then after that it will not open any .mov file and in fact, when I try to open the Quicktime player it will not open itself.  If I switch users to Admin, it all works fine, but when I go back to my regular role (where all of my preferences and programs are there for me to use), the same thing happens.  An .mov file will open once, then never again, and the Quicktime player seems to be disabled.
I've tried different .mov files, so it's not a corrupt file that's the problem.  And, in the past (a couple of Quicktime versions ago, I guess), all of this worked just fine.
Any helpful suggestions would be appreciated!

I have the exact same problem. They play on my Mac under Snow Leopard. Transfer to Vista gets a window with black and white and some other noise. No sound either.
