Problem Accessing MySQL on OSX 10.2.8

Hi,
Hope this is the right board.
I installed myql 4.0.25 on my eMac running OSX 10.2.8 some time ago. Now when I try to access mysql via Terminal I get
/usr/local/mysql/bin/mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Access denied for user: 'root@localhost' (Using password: NO)'
At no point did it ask me for a password, so I'm confused. I am not a UNIX enlightened user, this is my first real delve into it, as I want to learn PHP and database driven sites. I don't really have a clue what I'm doing !
When I originally set it up I set passwords for the root and user accounts, but when I am asked for a password these don't work. I got mysqld_safe running, so that part is working, I just can't seem to do any thing to enter either mysql or mysqladmin.
Do I need to uninstall MySQL and start again?
Any help appreciated.
Cheers,
Tracy

Hi,
use mysqladmin with the -p option. This prompts you for a password and you should give the mySQL root password (the one you once set) here.

  • Problem accessing mysql database

    Hello all
I am using the following piece of code to access a database running remotely..I am using mysql-connector-java-3.1.0.
    Connection C = DriverManager.getConnection(
    "jdbc:mysql://***.***.***.***:3306/db1?user=\'******\'&password=\'*****\'");
In the above ***.***.***.*** is the ip address of the machine on which the database is there.
    The error message is:
Invalid authorization specification: Access denied for user.
Please help me out on this. This is my first attempt to connect to MySQL from Java. Any code or comments and suggestions will be great.
    thanks a bunch
    Mahesh :)

    hi
thanks a lot for ur reply...I had enuf rights to connect to the database....i recollected later that the right way to get the Connection object is like this:
    Connection C = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:mysql://***.***.***.***:3306/db1?user=******&password=*****");
The name-value pairs like name and password need not have inverted commas...just user=soandso@password=soandso...
    thanks a lot nyways...

  • Problems accessing osx partition when in windows

    Hi!
I've been running bootcamp with windows xp to play game's as smoothly as possible for some time.
Until this day it has been working really great with MacDrive as a way to get access to the osx partition when im in windows.. But suddenly, after doing the firmware update this morning, i cant access the osx partition when in windows, actually, windows cant find the partition at all anymore.. This is a problem since all my games are on the osx partition. Could it be the firmware update that did it, or is there something wrong with the windows partition? And finally, how can i fix this?
Im greatful for all kinds of respons, thank you!
if it is any help, i got a macbook pro.

    Hi Dermot,
    Some clarification.
I have tried these 3 drivers below with the following results:
5.0.4 First Query succeeds, Second gives error "Unknown prepared statement handler (131072) given to mysqld_stmt_execute". At this point I can exit SQL Developer. If I run it a third time then the query does not complete and any attempt to exit SQL Developer results in "Connection is currently busy, try again?" and ultimately I have to kill it.
5.0.8 First Query succeeds, Second Query fails with Query execution was interrupted. Subsequent queries give the same result.
    5.1.15 Same as 5.0.8
I tried your suggestion, removed the driver, restarted, installed the 5.0.4 driver and restated and ran the test,
(I added a drop table so I could run it repeatedly) and it works repeatedly if I choose "Run as script F5".
    DROP TABLE table1;
    CREATE TABLE table1(col1 int);
    INSERT INTO Table1 values(1);
    SELECT * FROM table1;
    SELECT * FROM table1;
But If I execute the query "select * from table1" using "Run Statement Ctrl-Enter" twice then I get problem behaviour as described above.
I looked in the logfile for SQLDeveloper but it was empty.
I also tried creating a new database as root and connecting as root (same result)
I also tried the NightlyBuild of 5.1 and 6.0 but gave the same result as 5.1.5.
I have two other tools for accessing MySql: Toad and MySql workbench, both of which work but I've used SQL Developer with Oracle for some years and would like to keep using it.
I just tried connecting to a remote MySQL database and that seems to work without problems.
I'm thinking it may be related to some incompatibility between SQLDeveloper and the MySQL installed locally.
    I'll try another version....
Ok I installed a 32 bit version of MySql 5.5.10. I thought things were working but now I still get the problem but it is much more intermittent.
Now I can get it by modifying the query ie.
select * from table1; (works repeatedly untill followed by a change to the query)
select * from table1 order by col1; (fails)
    Another case
select * from table1 order by col1; (works repeatedly)
select * from table1 order by col1 asc; (fails first time)
    very weird...

  • Accessing MySQL InnoDB tables via JDBC using Oracle SQL Developer

I had posted a problem in the Oracle SQL Developer forum with how that application (v1.1) accesses MySQL InnoDB tables and someone replied that the "[data migration] team created the integration with MySQL", so I am posting here in hopes of learning more about the problem.
    Here's a summary:
When I use Oracle SQL Developer to query MySQL InnoDB tables, I need to issue a "commit" before I do each query to ensure that I am getting current results. Otherwise, it appears to be using a snapshot as-of the last commit. Is this a problem with SQL Developer, or a JDBC configuration, or MySQL problem even?
    The full details are here:
    Re: MySQL InnoDB tables

    Hi,
I've posted a response to your original thread.
    Regards,
    Dermot.

  • Question about mysql in OSX

Any experts out there on using mysql within OSX?
Here's what I'm puzzling over. Mysql (5.0) stores its databases in /usr/local/mysql/data. I would like to have one of the databases stored elsewhere (so I can keep it encrypted inside another user's account using filevault).
Is there a way to get mysql to do this? I tried just using an OSX alias, but mysql did not seem to recognize the re-direction.
    Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
    Eric

Actually, I've done this myself, and it works great if you are logged in as the user of that FileVault account (and you manually start mysql).
I've found that a much better way is just to create an encrypted disk image (use diskutil), and then point your mysql data directory to that mount point (/Volumes/myencrypteddisk), then anyone user knows the password for that volume can mount it then start mysql.
The problem is that this is a bit tedious, in that you can't set mysql up to just load when you start up your machine. You have to manually mount the drive first. If you launch the mysqld before mounting the drive, it'll throw an error.
    Hope that helps.
If you want a more step-by-step, just let me know.

  • Accessing MySQL

What are the default values for MySQL on OSX Server?
I want to access it from a client machine on my network. I've got the webserver running with PHP.
A PHP info script tells me MySQL is running, but I don't know how to get to it. Ideally I want to install phpmyadmin so I can manage my databases from there.
Can't some one get me started.
    Thanks

Most web packages include a sequence of shell commands around using mysqladmin, and these work the same on Mac OS X Server as they do on most other boxes with MySQL installed. Your particular package will usually have a sequence of mysqladmin or related commands, and a create command and some related SQL baggage.
To see what this can look like, launch Terminal.app and enter the command mysqladmin at the prompt. You should get some details on MySQL and the local MySQL configuration.
Here's a [tutorial around how this MySQL database creation process works|http://maczealots.com/tutorials/drupal> for [Drupal|http://www.drupal.org], which should get you going. (It's a few years old, but the procedures are basically the same.) Do follow the directions for your package.
Be very wary of installing any extraneous "stuff" on an externally-accessible web server, as there are botnets very active and very specifically targeting cross-site scripting and MySQL attacks against web sites, and that are targeting administration and monitoring and statistics tools.
Do keep your installed packages current, as the botnets are attacking either slightly ahead of or slightly behind the typical security announcements, too.
And if you prefer phpmyadmin, well, why not load it? It's certainly available. Just make sure it's (also) kept secure against (untrusted) remote access.
Locally, I find [CocoaMySQL|http://cocoamysql.sourceforge.net> pretty handy. Here are some [details of how to use this tool with remote access|http://64.223.189.234/node/376] akin to MySQL. Latest bits appear to be CocoaMySQL beta v0.7b5 from 2006-11-01.
I don't let any MySQL remote management access past the firewalls for the sites I manage.

  • IDEFRAG FAULT: There was a hardware problem accessing your volume

Idefrag stops defragging when arriving at the following block and gives this warning:
There was a hardware problem accessing your volume (e.g. bad block or loss of power) and Idefrag cannot continue. The File that Idefrag was working on was: /Previous/Library/Logs/DirectoryService/DirectoryService.server.log -
    What can i do?
Now i cant finish defragmenting. Only the compact defrag level > cuz this scan level only restore the empty blocks. All the other levels it stops defragging.
    Please help

iDefrag may well have damaged your system. No such third party utility is required, or even adviseable, on OS X which does such things by itself.
I would recommend a reinstall from your recovery partition.
    Defragmentation in OS X:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1375  which states:
You probably won't need to optimize at all if you use Mac OS X. Here's why:
Hard disk capacity is generally much greater now than a few years ago. With more free space available, the file system doesn't need to fill up every "nook and cranny." Mac OS Extended formatting (HFS Plus) avoids reusing space from deleted files as much as possible, to avoid prematurely filling small areas of recently-freed space.
Mac OS X 10.2 and later includes delayed allocation for Mac OS X Extended-formatted volumes. This allows a number of small allocations to be combined into a single large allocation in one area of the disk.
Fragmentation was often caused by continually appending data to existing files, especially with resource forks. With faster hard drives and better caching, as well as the new application packaging format, many applications simply rewrite the entire file each time. Mac OS X 10.3 onwards can also automatically defragment such slow-growing files. This process is sometimes known as "Hot-File-Adaptive-Clustering."
Aggressive read-ahead and write-behind caching means that minor fragmentation has less effect on perceived system performance.
Whilst 'defragging' OS X is rarely necessary, Rod Hagen has produced this excellent analysis of the situation which is worth reading:
Most users, as long as they leave plenty of free space available , and don't work regularly in situations where very large files are written and rewritten, are unlikely to notice the effects of fragmentation on either their files or on the drives free space much.
As the drive fills the situations becomes progressively more significant, however.
Some people will tell you that "OSX defrags your files anyway". This is only partly true. It defrags files that are less than 20 MB in size. It doesn't defrag larger files and it doesn't defrag the free space on the drive. In fact the method it uses to defrag the smaller files actually increases the extent of free space fragmentation. Eventually, in fact, once the largest free space fragments are down to less than 20 MB (not uncommon on a drive that has , say only 10% free space left) it begins to give up trying to defrag altogether. Despite this, the system copes very well without defragging as long as you have plenty of room.
Again, this doesn't matter much when the drive is half empty or better, but it does when it gets fullish, and it does especially when it gets fullish if you are regularly dealing with large files , like video or serious audio stuff.
If you look through this discussion board you will see quite a few complaints from people who find that their drive gets "slow". Often you will see that say that "still have 10 or 20 gigs free" or the like. On modern large drives by this stage they are usually in fact down to the point where the internal defragmentation routines can no longer operate , where their drives are working like navvies to keep up with finding space for any larger files, together with room for "scratch files", virtual memory, directories etc etc etc. Such users are operating in a zone where they put a lot more stress on their drives as a result, often start complaining of increased "heat", etc etc. Most obviously, though, the computer slows down to a speed not much better than that of molasses. Eventually the directories and other related files may collapse altogether and they find themselves with a next to unrecoverable disk problems.
By this time, of course, defragging itself has already become just about impossible. The amount of work required to shift the data into contiguous blocks is immense, puts additional stress on the drive, takes forever, etc etc. The extent of fragmentation of free space at this stage can be simply staggering, and any large files you subsequently write are likely to be divided into many , many tens of thousands of fragments scattered across the drive. Not only this, but things like the "extents files", which record where all the bits are located, will begin to grow astronomically as a result, putting even more pressure on your already stressed drive, and increasing the risk of major failures.
Ultimately this adds up to a situation where you can identify maybe three "phases" of mac life when it comes to the need for defragmentation.
In the "first phase" (with your drive less than half full), it doesn't matter much at all - probably not enough to even make it worth doing.
In the "second phase" (between , say 50% free space and 20% free space remaining) it becomes progressively more useful, but , depending on the use you put your computer to you won't see much difference at the higher levels of free space unless you are serious video buff who needs to keep their drives operating as efficiently and fast as possible - chances are they will be using fast external drives over FW800 or eSata to compliment their internal HD anyway.
At the lower end though (when boot drives get down around the 20% mark on , say, a 250 or 500 Gig drive) I certainly begin to see an impact on performance and stability when working with large image files, mapping software, and the like, especially those which rely on the use of their own "scratch" files, and especially in situations where I am using multiple applications simultaneously, if I haven't defragmented the drive for a while. For me, defragmenting (I use iDefrag too - it is the only third party app I trust for this after seeing people with problems using TechToolPro and Drive Genius for such things) gives a substantial performance boost in this sort of situation and improves operational stability. I usually try to get in first these days and defrag more regularly (about once a month) when the drive is down to 30% free space or lower.
Between 20% and 10% free space is a bit of a "doubtful region". Most people will still be able to defrag successfully in this sort of area, though the time taken and the risks associated increase as the free space declines. My own advice to people in this sort of area is that they start choosing their new , bigger HD, because they obviously are going to need one very soon, and try to "clear the decks" so that they maintain that 20% free buffer until they do. Defragging regularly (perhaps even once a fortnight) will actually benefit them substantially during this "phase", but maybe doing so will lull them into a false sense of security and keep them from seriously recognising that they need to be moving to a bigger HD!
Once they are down to that last ten per cent of free space, though, they are treading on glass. Free space fragmentation at least will already be a serious issue on their computers but if they try to defrag with a utility without first making substantially more space available then they may find it runs into problems or is so slow that they give up half way through and do the damage themselves, especially if they are using one of the less "forgiving" utilities!
In this case I think the best way to proceed is to clone the internal drive to a larger external with SuperDuper, replace the internal drive with a larger one and then clone back to it. No-one down to the last ten percent of their drive really has enough room to move. Defragging it will certainly speed it up, and may even save them from major problems briefly, but we all know that before too long they are going to be in the same situation again. Better to deal with the matter properly and replace the drive with something more akin to their real needs once this point is reached. Heck, big HDs are as cheap as chips these days! It is mad to struggle on with sluggish performance, instability, and the possible risk of losing the lot, in such a situation.

  • Having problems accessing any apps on my iCloud. Set up and signed in successfully but then when I click on an app it just says there's a problem but doesn't say how to fix it. Please help, am very new to this!

    Hi
I am very new to updating my iPod touch and this is the first time I've used the iCloud. However, I am having problems accessing any apps on my iCloud such as photos, reminders etc. I've set it up on my iPod touch successfully and I can sign in on my PC. However, when I try to access any of the apps it says there was a problem. It doesn't tell me how to fix it or what the problem is.
    Is anyone able to help?

It is working now. I no longer get the message about the item not being available in the US and I can access the store.

  • Problems accessing Music Files in Slideshow module in LR 2.6 and Windows 7 64 bit

Just got new computer 64 bit Windows 7.  Installed LR 2.6 and am having problem with slideshow and music.  Never had this problem before with my XP computer.  When I open up slideshow module and go to Playback window and check soundtrack and try to choose a music folder, I have a new problem.  It opens up "Browse for Files & Folders" dialog box as usual, but it only lets me browse on my desktop or my User name on the C drive.  My music is in my F drive where my data is stored.  I've never had a problem accessing my music in my F drive in my XP computer, but this setup limits where I can browse to.  Interesetingly, this works OK in LR 3 beta on this WIndows 7 PC where it opens up a dialog box "Choose a music file to play" which gives me access to all my drives.  In summary, I can't access music files stored on a drive other than my C drive using LR 2.6 on a Windows 7 64 bit computer.
I have attached a screen shot to compare the new Windows 7 Browse for Files & Folders dialog box to that in my XP computer.
         Would appreciate any suggestions.
    Thanks,

Thanks for the reply.  I went through the process you suggested to change Ownership  & grant permission to access files.  When I get to the owner tab in Advanced Security Settings....I am already the current owner of this folder.
    What do I do now?

  • Problems accessing Time Capsule on windows Vista

I have an iMac running Leopard and a laptop running Vista Home Edition. I'm having some problems accessing Time Capsule from the Vista machine. everytime I click to access the drive, a message appears in the menu bar of the window that says (not responding). I've tried leaving it. I've even changed my entire wireless network to bypass the original g router (belkin) to use TC, so I now have TC as my router, Belkin just setup as a wired broadband modem but I still get the same problem. The mac seems fine, although I have had quite a few issues with drop outs.
both machines have the latest version of Airport Utility and Bonjour.
The laptop is a recent purchase to replace a dead XP machine, this worked fine and I managed to get stuff backed up just before it died, thankgod.
    Any help appreciated.

No problem seeing Time Capsule with iMac, Dell desktop XP Home, Dell notebook XP Pro, and Fusion with XP Pro. All installed according to the installation guide. Installed AirPort Utility on all machines and updated firmware to 7.3.1. To see the other machines, make sure file sharing is on. Firewall on the PCs may need to be turned off. The printer plugged into the USB port also worked with all the XP systems and the iMac with a few missing features on iMac (I am assuming different driver issues). BTW, logging onto the created network and accessing the Time Capsule HD are separate. If you've entered different passwords for the HD and wireless networking when setting up Time Capsule initially (which I did through the iMac first), you'll need to enter them separately with the XP machines. You could also try resetting Time Capsule. Seems to work for others.
