Problem calling in other methods.....

Hi I am trying to write a program that will allow a user to input 3 integers (3 sides of a triangle). These are taken as arguments and then a method i have written will calculate and print out the area back to the user.
I have spent a while typing the following code. I can get it to compile with no errors, however, it does not work fully. The user can input the three integers, then it does not work from there. Any help would be most appreciated
Thank you in advance
import java.io.*;
public class MultMethEx1
public static int printTriangleArea (int sidea, int sideb, int sidec)
     int s = (sidea + sideb + sidec)/2;
     int srs = s*(s-sidea)*(s-sideb)*(s-sidec);
     double area = Math.sqrt(srs);
     String newstring = String.valueOf(area);
     int areat = Integer.parseInt(newstring);
     System.out.println("The area is: " + areat);
     return(areat);
public static void main (String[] args) throws IOException
     System.out.println("Please enter the values for the three sides of you triangle");
     System.out.println(" ");
     BufferedReader a = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader (System.in));
     System.out.print ("Enter the value of side A: ");
     String tempa = a.readLine();
     int sidea = Integer.parseInt(tempa);
BufferedReader b = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader (System.in));
     System.out.print ("Enter the value of side B: ");
     String tempb = b.readLine();
     int sideb = Integer.parseInt(tempb);
     BufferedReader c = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader (System.in));
     System.out.print ("Enter the value of side C: ");
     String tempc = c.readLine();
     int sidec = Integer.parseInt(tempc);
     System.out.println(" ");
     printTriangleArea(sidea, sideb, sidec);

public class MultMethEx1
public static void printTriangleArea (int sidea, int sideb, int sidec)
int s = (sidea + sideb + sidec)/2;
int srs = s*(s-sidea)*(s-sideb)*(s-sidec);
double area = Math.sqrt(srs);
// String newstring = String.valueOf(area); remove this
// int areat = Integer.parseInt(newstring); remove this
System.out.println("The area is: " + area); change yr areat to area
// return(areat); remove this since void method noneed to return value
public static void main (String[] args) throws IOException
System.out.println("Please enter the values for the three sides of you triangle");
System.out.println(" ");
BufferedReader a = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader (System.in));
System.out.print ("Enter the value of side A: ");
String tempa = a.readLine();
int sidea = Integer.parseInt(tempa);
BufferedReader b = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader (System.in));
System.out.print ("Enter the value of side B: ");
String tempb = b.readLine();
int sideb = Integer.parseInt(tempb);
BufferedReader c = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader (System.in));
System.out.print ("Enter the value of side C: ");
String tempc = c.readLine();
int sidec = Integer.parseInt(tempc);
System.out.println(" ");
printTriangleArea(sidea, sideb, sidec);
for method calling ---- printTriangleArea(sidea, sideb, sidec), we will call a void method above that will help us to do all necessary calculation and print out the output for us, so that no need to return anything at all

    To answer your question, you wrote the wrong method signature. It should be:jmethodID mmid = env->GetMethodID(cls, "recibeBuffer", "()V");Regards

  • How to call a bean method through a javascript function

    I dont discover any problems calling the bean method in this maner:
    <%= helpdesk.data() %>
    But, when I use a Button Onclick= to call the script function and which then is going call my bean method
    an error on the page is reported!
    I have include som code which gives you the idea of what Iam searching for. And is it possible to call
    the bean method without doing from a new jsp page?
    If you have any suggestions to why it doesnt work, please let me know.
    I use Apache Tomcat 4.0
    Best regards Micah.
    <jsp:useBean id='helpdesk' scope='application'
    class='helpdesk.testdb'/>
    <html>
    <head>
    <script language="javascript">
    function broadcast()
    helpdesk.data();
    </script>
    </head>
    <body>
    <input type="button" value="Broadcast" onclick= broadcast()>
    </body>
    </html>

    It's actually quite simple:
    Beans run server-side
    Javascript runs client-side
    So you will never be able to run server-side-code thru the client...

  • Problem calling a method in a servlet witch returns remote ejb

    Hi, I have a problem combining servlets ands ejbs, I expose my problem :
    What I have :
    1 . I have a User table into a SGBD with two attributes login and pass.
    2 . I have a UserBean linked to User table with a remote interface
    3 . I have a stateless UserSessionBean with a remote interface
    4 . I have a UserServlet linked to a jsp page which allows me to add users
    5 . I use Jboss
    What is working ?
    1 - I have a method newUser implemented in my UserSessionBean :
    public class UserSessionBean implements SessionBean {
      private SessionContext sessionContext;
      private UserRemoteHome userRemoteHome;
      public void ejbCreate() throws CreateException {
      // Initialize UserRemoteHome
      // Method to add a new user
      public UserRemote newUser(String login, String password) {
            UserRemote newUser = null;
            try {
                newUser = userRemoteHome.create(login, password);
            } catch (RemoteException ex) {
                System.err.println("Error: " + ex);
            } catch (CreateException ex) {
                System.err.println("Error: " + ex);
            return newUser;
    }2 - When I test this method with a simple client it works perfectly :
    public class TestEJB {
        public static void main(String[] args) {
            Context initialCtx;
            try {
                // Create JNDI context
                // Context initialization
                // Narrow UserSessionHome
                // Create UserSession
                UserSession session = sessionHome.create();
                // Test create
                UserRemote newUser = session.newUser("pierre", "hemici");
                if (newUser != null) {
                    System.out.println(newUser.printMe());
            } catch (Exception e) {
                System.err.println("Error: " + e);
                e.printStackTrace();
    Result : I got the newUser printed on STDOUT and I check in the User table (in the SGBD) if the new user has been created.
    What I want ?
    I want to call the newUser method from the UserServlet and use the RemoteUser returned by the method.
    What I do ?
    The jsp :
    1 - I have a jsp page where a get information about the new user to create
    2 - I put the login parameter and the password parameter into the request
    3 - I call the UserServlet when the button "add" is pressed on the jsp page.
    The Servlet :
    1 - I have a method doInsert which call the newUser method :
    public class UserServlet extends HttpServlet {
        private static final String CONTENT_TYPE = "text/html";
        // EJB Context
        InitialContext ejbCtx;
        // Session bean
        UserSession userSession;
        public void init() throws ServletException {
            try {
                // Open JNDI context (the same as TestClient context)
                // Get UserSession Home
                // Create UserSession
                userSession = userSessionHome.create();
            } catch (NamingException ex) {
                System.out.println("Error: " + ex);
            } catch (RemoteException ex) {
                System.out.println("Error: " + ex);
            } catch (CreateException ex) {
                System.out.println("Error: " + ex);
        protected void service(HttpServletRequest req, HttpServletResponse resp) throws
                ServletException, IOException {
         * Does insertion of the new user in the database.
        public void doInsert(HttpServletRequest req, HttpServletResponse resp) throws
                ServletException, IOException {
            try {
                // Get parameters to create the newUser
                String login = req.getParameter("login");
                String password = req.getParameter("password");
               // Create the newUser
                System.out.println("Calling newUser before");
                UserRemote user = userSession.newUser(login, password);
                System.out.println("Calling newUser after");
            } catch (Exception e) {
        // Clean up resources
        public void destroy() {
    Result :
    When I run my jsp page and click on the "add" button, I got the message "Calling newUser before" printed in STDOUT and the error message :

    Constat :
    I checked into my SGBD and the new user has been created.
    The error appears only when the method return Remote ejbs, if I return simples objects (Strings, int..) it works.
    What can I do to resolve this problem ?
    Thank you.

    "Why do you want to servlet to gain access to another EJB through the stateless session bean. Why cant the servlet call it directly ?"
    Because I want to access to the informations included in the entity bean UserBean (which is remote).
    You said that it is a bad design, but how can I access to my UserBean ejbs from the session bean if I don't do that ?
    For example I want a List of all users to be seen in a jsp page :
    1 - I call the method getUserList which returnsan ArrayList of UserRemote.
    2 - I iterate over the ArrayList to get the users parameters to be seen.
    As the other example (newUser), when I do
    ArrayList users = (ArrayList) userSession.getUserList(); with the simple client it works, but in the servlet I got the same error.
    But, if I call directly the findAll method (as you'are saying) in the servlet
    ArrayList users = (ArrayList) userRemoteHome.findAll(); it works...
    I think that if my servlet calls directly entity ejbs, I don't need UserSession bean anymore. Is that right ?
    I precise that my design is this :
    jsp -> servlet -> session bean -> entity bean -> sgbd
    Is that a bad design ? Do I need the session bean anymore ?
    Thank you.

    Connection conn;
    public void connectDB(){

    public void closeDB(){
    try{
    if(conn != null && !conn.isClosed())
    conn.close();
    }catch(Exception excep){
    The main error is occuring at the following lines connectDB() and closeDB() in the class student manager. The class dbutil is in an another package.with an another file called connectionManager which establishes the connection with DB. The dbutil has the openconnection and close connection methods. I have not yet written the insert statements in StudentManager. PLease do Help me

    You're doing quite a few things that will cause errors, I'm afraid. I'll see if I can help you.
    The error you're asking about is caused by the following line:
    dbutil.connectDB();
    Now first of all please always ensure that your class names begin with capital letters and your instances of classes with lowercase letters. That's what everybody does, so it makes your code much easier to follow.
    So re-write the couple of lines at the beginning of your dbutil class like this:
    public class Dbutil {
    /** Creates a new instance of Dbutil */
    public Dbutil() {
    Now you need to create an instance of dbutil before you can call connectDB() like this:
    Dbutil dbutil = new Dbutil();
    now you can call the method connectDB():
    dbutil.connectDB();
    The problem was that if you don't create an instance first then java assumes that you are calling a static method, because you don't need an instance of a class to call a static method. If it was static, the method code would have been:
    public static void connectDB(){
    You have a fine example of a static method call in your code:
    ConnectionManager.getConnection();
    If it wasn't a static method your code would have to look like this:
    ConnectionManager connectionManager = new ConnectionManager();
    connectionManager.getConnection();
    See the difference? I also know that ConnectionManager.getConnection() is a call to a static method because it begins with a capital letter.
    Anyway - now on to other things:
    You have got two different Connection objects called conn. One is in StudentManager and the other is in Dbutils, and for the moment they have nothing to do with each other.
    You call dbUtil.connectDb() and so if your connectDb method is working properly you have a live connection called conn in your dbUtil object. But the connection called conn in StudentManager is still null.
    If your connection in the dbUtil object is working then you could just add a line after the call to connectDb() in StudentManager so that the StudentManager.conn object references the dbUtil.conn object like this:
    dbutil.connectDB();
    conn = dbUtil.conn;

  • Problem calling applet method using IE

    I've searched through the forum and can't seem to find anything that can help me fix this. I'm trying to call an applet's method using Javascript. This is working fine under Netscape, but not IE. In this example method, I'm trying to call the applet's countChars method, which should return the length of the string you pass into it. Works under Netscape 6.2, but not IE 6.0

  • DataServices calling a SOAP method - problem occurs

    Hello,
    I am calling a SOAP method when an ETL problem occurs, to warn a supervision application.
    This is done by a function on which the WSDL url is given. Then it is the WSDL that gives the method parameters and also the url of the method.
    My problem is that I get this error:
    <!-- BusinessObjects Data Services generated XML -->
    <!-- 2010-09-28.10:45:57(422,412)[1] -->
    <test>

      role: provider
      interface: {http://eventsender.esb.company.com}IEventSender
      servic
    </AL_ERROR_MSG>
    </test>
    And I don't know were the error occurs.
    The WSDL has also a 'localhost' reference, and not the IP address of the SOAP server. It seems the WSDL can't be parameterized with an IP address. Can this be a problem?:
    <wsdl:service name="EventSender">
        <wsdl:port binding="company:EventSenderSOAP" name="EventSenderSOAP">
          <soap:address location="http://localhost:8181/Esb/services/SoapEventSender"></soap:address>
        </wsdl:port>
      </wsdl:service>
    I don't know if focusing on the address or url problem is right. Any hint will be appreciated.

  • Problem calling AS3 class's methods from Flex Project

    Sorry if this is a stupid question, but after 2 days of Web
    searching and 2 books give up; I am a Java and c# programmer and am
    having problems calling AS3 classes (in packages) from Flex Builder
    2 Flex Projects; the AS3 classes work great as Flex Builder "AS3
    Projects", but when I try to use the classes in a Flex Builder
    "Flex Project" I am able to see and set their properties, but
    cannot see (through "code completion") their methods (unless the
    class extends another AS3 class; and in that case I can see the
    base class's methods). Here is the code:
    AS3 Example Class:
    package asText {
    public class CheckWord {
    public var strData:String;
    public var strAProperty:String;
    public var intAProperty:int;
    // Constructor
    public function CheckWord() {
    public function TestMethod():void {
    trace("test...");
    public function WordLength():int {
    var intLength:int = 0;
    trace(strData);
    intLength = strData.length;
    return intLength;
    } // From Method WordLength
    } // From Class CheckWord
    } // From Package asText
    The MXML code:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
    <mx:Application xmlns:mx="
    http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml"
    layout="absolute"
    width="442" height="488" horizontalAlign="center"
    verticalAlign="middle"
    backgroundGradientColors="[#c0c0c0, #c0c0c0]"
    xmlns:asTheText="asText.*"
    >
    <asTheText:CheckWord strData="Test words" />
    <mx:Panel title="Welcome to ........" width="337"
    height="393" horizontalAlign="center" verticalAlign="middle"
    layout="absolute" y="15" x="50">
    <mx:Text text="First Name" enabled="true" width="68"
    fontWeight="bold" x="27.25" y="36"/>
    <mx:TextInput id="txtFName" x="112.25" y="34"/>
    <mx:Text text="Last Name" enabled="true" width="68"
    fontWeight="bold" x="27.25" y="66"/>
    <mx:TextInput x="112.25" y="64" id="txtLName"/>
    <mx:Text text="email address" enabled="true" width="87"
    fontWeight="bold" x="17.25" y="96"/>
    <mx:TextInput width="189" id="txtEmail" left="112.25"
    top="94"/>
    <mx:Button id="butSubmit" label="Submit" x="95" y="194"
    click="asTheText:TestMethod();"/>
    ..............and so on ............
    All this does is give me an 1180 error:
    1180: Call to a possibly undefined method TestMethod.
    flexConveyMovie1.mxml

    Thanks, I have it working; I was not assigning an "ID" to the
    "MXML use of the class" (whatever the formal name for that is;
    like: <asTheText:CheckWord id="MyText" strData="The Data" />
    ) and then I was not referencing that ID in what I am refering to
    as calling methods for the Class; like:
    <mx:Button id="butTest" label="Test Function" x="39"
    y="208" click="MyText.TestMethod();"/>
    Also, I did some tests on this, and I am shocked that
    apparently neither of these two "uses"(?) of a custom AS3 class
    actually "call" the Class's constructor. Does that make sense or is
    that the result of how I am structuring this?

  • Problem calling java method from c

    Hi ,
    I'm trying to call a java method from a C program. it gives no error during compilation as well as building the application. but when i tried to create the JVM by running my application it pops up the message "The application failed to start because jvm.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix the problem." I tried out setting all the environment variables to include the jvm.dll(PATH set to c:\j2sdk1.4.2_05\bin;c:\j2sdk1.4.2_05\jre\bin). Still got the same message. Then i re-installed java platform once more. Even now i get the same error. I have more than one jvm.dll at locations jre\bin\client and server, oracle has some jvm.dll . Will that be a problem? if so can i remove those? which of them should be removed and how?
    The code i'm using is

    pfnCreateVM = JNU_FindCreateJavaVM("jre\\bin\\server\\jvm.dll");
    res = (*pfnCreateVM)(&jvm,(void **) &env, &vm_args );
    // res = JNI_CreateJavaVM(&jvm,(void **) &env, &vm_args );
    /* Find the class we want to load */
    cls = (*env)->FindClass( env, "InstantiatedFromC" );
    if ( verbose )
    printf ( "Class: %x" , cls );
    /*jvm->DestroyJavaVM( );*/
    Could anyone help me solve this problem as early as possible, bcoz i'm in an urge to complete the project.
    Thanks in advance.
    Usha.

    You either have to add to the system path of where is your jvm.dll is located or explicitly link to jvm.dll call GetProcAddress to obtain the address of an exported function in the DLL.

  • Problem calling methods

    I am having trouble calculating the area and perimeter. I know the methods are right, but I just don't know how to call them to make them do the work. I've tried just about everything I can think of. Can anybody tell me what I am doing wrong? Thanks in advance!
    Sample output:
    Enter length of rectangle:
    2
    Enter width of rectangle:
    4
    Area: 0.0
    Perimeter: 4.0
    Press any key to continue . . .
    import java.util.Scanner;
    import java.text.DecimalFormat;
    public class Rectangle
         public double length;
         public double width;
         public Rectangle()
              length = 0;
              width = 0;
         public double getLength()
              return length;
         public double getWidth()
              return width;
         public void setLength(double length)
              this.length = length;
         public void setWidth(double width)
              this.width = width;
         public double area(Rectangle R)
              double area = length * width;
              return area;
         public double perimeter(Rectangle R)
              double perimeter = (length * 2) + (width * 2);
              return perimeter;
    /*     public String toString()
              double area = 0;
              double perimeter = 0;
              return "Area: " + area + "\tPerimeter: " + perimeter;
         public static void main(String [] args)
              DecimalFormat onePlace = new DecimalFormat("#0.0");
              Rectangle R = new Rectangle();
              Rectangle L = new Rectangle();
              Rectangle W = new Rectangle();
              Scanner input = new Scanner(System.in);
              System.out.println("Enter length of rectangle: ");
              L.setLength(input.nextDouble());
              System.out.println("\nEnter width of rectangle: ");
              W.setWidth(input.nextDouble());
              System.out.println("\nArea: " + onePlace.format(L.area(W)));
              System.out.println("Perimeter: " + onePlace.format(L.perimeter(R)));
    //          System.out.println(R.toString());
    }

    Judging from your sample output there is only one rectangle
    involved in the problem.
    Your main() method should reflect this fact. Remove the three
    new Rectangle() lines and replace them with by declaring a single
    rectangle. Set the rectangle's width and height, then obtain its
    perimeter and area.

  • Problem Calling Remote Session Bean Method

    Need help. I am trying to call a method in a remote stateless session bean in an EJB in my web application from a stateless session bean in a different EJB in the web application. I am getting a run-time error that says,
    "java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: dtpitb.common.sb.reports.CommonReportsHome"
    ref = ctx.lookup( jndiName );
    // Cast to Local Home Interface using RMI-IIOP
    commonReportsHome = (CommonReportsHome)
    PortableRemoteObject.narrow(ref, CommonReportsHome.class);
    If while in a session bean of an EJB, I want to call a public method in the session bean of a totally different EJB, is there something in particular I am missing. I can make the call from the web application code. I can make a remote call from this session bean to itself in the exact same fashion. I just can't call a session bean in another EJB. All thoughts are welcome.
    Thanks,
    Pete

    Thanks for replying. That could very well be the case I suppose. I'm using JBuilder and WebLogic, and JBuilder pretty much does all of the deployment descriptor code for me. However, maybe this is something I need to incorporate manually.
    One EJB is in the same project as the web application code. The other EJB (common_ejb) is in another project. The calling session bean is in the project with the web app, and the remote session bean method that I'm targeting is in the common EJB session bean. Both EJBs are included in the web app's WEB-INF\lib dir and in the war file.
    So theoretically, this isn't an unconventional practice I assume?
    Thanks,
    Pete

  • EJB 3.1 @Asynchronous and calling other methods from within

    Hey all,
    I am helping a friend set up a test framework, and I've turned him on to using JEE6 for the task. I am decently familiar with entity beans, session beans, and such. One of the new features is @Asynchronous, allowing a method to be ran on a separate thread. The test framework generally needs to spawn potentially 1000's of threads to simulate multiple users at once. Originally I was doing this using the Executor classes, but I've since learned that for some reason, spawning your own threads within a JEE container is "not allowed" or bad to do. I honestly don't quite know why this is.. from what I've read the main concern is that the container maintains threads and your own threads could mess up the container somehow. I can only guess that this might be possible if your threads use the container services in some way.. but if anyone could enlighten me on the details as to why this is bad, that would be great.
    None the less, EJB 3.1 adds the async capability and I am now looking to use this. From my servlet I use @EJB to access the session bean, and call an async method. My servlet returns right away as it should. From the async method I do some work and using an entity bean store results, so I don't need to return a Future object. In fact, my ejb then makes an HttpClient call to another servlet to notify it that the result is ready.
    My main question though, is if it's ok to call other methods from the async method that are not declared @Asynchronous. I presume it is ok, as the @Asynchronous just enables the container to spawn a thread to execute that method in. But I can't dig up any limitations on the code within an async method.. whether or not it has restrictions on the container services, is there anything wrong with using HttpClient to make a request from the method.. and making calls to helper methods within the bean that are not async.
    Thanks.

    Yes since the EE spec delegated thread management to conatiners, the container might assume that some info is available in the thread context that you may not have made available to your threads.
    Also threading is a technical implementation detail and the drive with the EE spec is that you should concentrate on business requirements and let the container do the plumbing part.
    If you were managing your own threads spawned from EJBs, you'd have to be managing your EJBs' lifecycle as well. This would just add to more plumbing code by the developer and typically requires writting platform specific routines which the containers already do anyway.

    Thanks.If you want to be asynchronous without caring about a return value then just use MDBs.
    The async methods have no restrictions on container services and there is nothing wrong with calling other non async methods. Once the async method is reached those annotations don't matter anyway (unless if you call thhose methods from a new reference of the EJB that you look up) as they only make sense in a client context.
    Why do you need to make the call to the servlet from the EJB? Makes it difficult to know who is the client here. Better use the Future objects and let the initial caller delegate to the other client components as needed.
