• New to java - glitch in my program/game? should be a simple fix :)

hey everyone, I'm a student who's new to java programming :) It's is also the first programming language that I'm learning. I know the basics, but nothing very complicated.
I'm making a pong-like game, in an applet.
As I was making the paddle and using a mouselistener to make it move vertically, I came across this problem, the paddle will move vertically with the mouse's position, but one end of my paddle will grow abnormally (I want it to stay the same size as it moves up and down)
Here's my code: (I'm not using most of the mouselistener and keylistener classes yet, so you can ignore them. I'm guessing the problem is probably in one of the last classes, at the bottom)
ypaddle is the variable used for getting the co-ordinates of the mouse and transferring them to the paddle itself
// The "Ping" class.
import java.applet.*;
import java.awt.*;
import java.awt.event.*;
*Ping
public class Ping extends Applet
implements KeyListener, MouseListener, MouseMotionListener
int width, height, x, ypaddle;
Graphics g;
char move;
*Initializes variables
public void init ()
resize (700, 500);
setBackground (Color.white);
addKeyListener (this);
addMouseListener (this);
addMouseMotionListener(this);
public void keyPressed (KeyEvent e)
public void keyReleased (KeyEvent e)
public void keyTyped (KeyEvent e)
public void mouseEntered (MouseEvent e)
public void mouseExited (MouseEvent e)
public void mousePressed (MouseEvent e)
public void mouseReleased (MouseEvent e)
public void mouseClicked (MouseEvent e)
public void mouseMoved (MouseEvent e)
ypaddle = e.getY ();
repaint();
public void mouseDragged (MouseEvent e)
public void paint (Graphics g)
paddle (g, ypaddle);
* Creates the paddle for hitting the ball
*@param y value used to move the paddle vertically
public void paddle (Graphics g, int y)
g.fillRect (10, 10+y, 15, 60+y);
} // Ping classI'm totally stumped, I've tried for 2 hours to find the problem, and I have a feeling it's something very simple that I'm passing over...
If you have any questions about the variables or other things, please ask!
And one last little quick question, is there a way I can restrict the movement of the paddle between two Y values? (i.e not higher than y=10 or lower than y=100)
Thanks in advance :)

I'm not exactly sure how to find out, Eh?
You wrote this code:
g.fillRect (10, 10+y, 15, 60+y);Do you understand what fillRect does? If I call fillRect(10, 20, 30, 40) where will that rectangle be drawn? If you don't know how to answer that, I don't see how you could have written that line of code.
but here's some pictures of what happens ( I put in 0 and 80 as the y values in each picture, and left the code window open so you can see )I don't need to see them.

So, given that the first one comes from fillRect(10, 10, 15, 60), (you get where that comes from I hope) and the second comes from fillRect(10, 90, 15, 150) (that too), does that not suggest that something is wrong with the numbers you're passing to fillRect? And since you have read the docs for fillRect and know what it does and what each of its parameters represents (right?), does it not suggest exactly what is wrong with those numbers?

• Very strange serialization problem(in what should be a simple solution)

I'm trying to serialize a hashTable. And i'm trying to do it the same way that I serialized my binaryTree(which had no problems)
But, for some reason it isn't working. I'm getting a SER file of only 3kb, and when I try to read the file after writing it my hashTable is coming out null.
Here is a few code snippets:
public class DictionaryController implements Serializable
private static final long serialVersionUID = 1L;
private HashTable hash;
private Input inputer;
private RandomAccessFile raf;
public DictionaryController()
if(checkDictionary() == true)
try
FileInputStream inFile = new FileInputStream("res/dictionaryHash.ser");
ObjectInputStream inStream = new ObjectInputStream(inFile);
hash = (HashTable) inStream.readObject();
inStream.close();
catch(IOException ioe)
catch(ClassNotFoundException cnfe)
else
hash = new HashTable(50000, 0.8);
createRandomDictionary();
}This is where I try to open it. when I say hash = new HashTable, hash is coming as null when I debug it.
public void save()
try
FileOutputStream outFile = new FileOutputStream("res/dictionaryHash.ser");
ObjectOutputStream outStream = new ObjectOutputStream(outFile);
outStream.writeObject(hash);
outStream.close();
catch(IOException ioe)
}That is the save. It only writes the file to the hard drive when I close the GUI.
I've got all of my other classes implementing serializable, so I really can't figure out what is wrong.
Anyone have any ideas? I have long values being stored in my hashTable, but all primitives are already Serializable right??
argg. this seems like it should be such a simple problem but it just won't work. And its almost exactly the same as what I did before...

Yeah, my fault for leaving the catch statements empty.
Anyway, it is the output stream IO that is throwing the exception
What do you mean by: You're probably hiding an instance variable with a member variable, but it's impossible to tell from the little bit of code you've shown.
I can print out more code just need to know what stuff to post.
Here is what i get from the printstacktrace:

• Problem compiling program

Hey guys I'm new to programming so please be tolerant to my questions for a little.
Anyway..... I was writing a basic hello world program and it compiled fine. However, I can not run it.
It comes up with this error:
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: HelloApp
Caused by: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: HelloApp
at java.net.URLClassLoader$1.run(Unknown Source)
at java.security.AccessController.doPrivileged(Native Method)
at java.net.URLClassLoader.findClass(Unknown Source)
at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(Unknown Source)
at sun.misc.Launcher$AppClassLoader.loadClass(Unknown Source)
at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(Unknown Source)
at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClassInternal(Unknown Source)
The program I wrote was:
public class HelloApp
public static void main(String[] args)
helloMessage = "Hello, World!";
System.out.println(helloMessage);
static String helloMessage;
}

You would use code tags for your code to retain its formatting and be readable. To do this, you will need to paste already formatted code into the forum, highlight this code, and then press the "code" button at the top of the forum Message editor prior to posting the message. You may want to click on the Preview tab to make sure that your code is formatted correctly. Another way is to place the tag [code] at the top of your block of code and the tag [/code] at the bottom, like so:
[code]
// your code block goes here.
// note the differences between the tag at the top vs the bottom.
[/code]

• InputStreamReader problem...should be an easy fix

try
FileReader reader = new FileReader(fileName);
InputStreamReader inputreader = new InputStreamReader(reader, Charset.forName("ISO-8859-1"));
BufferedReader buffer = new BufferedReader(inputreader);
My compiler says:
C:\java\NFOview>javac NFOview.java
NFOview.java:89: cannot resolve symbol
symbol : constructor InputStreamReader(java.io.InputStreamReader,java.nio.charset.Charset)
location: class java.io.InputStreamReader
InputStreamReader inputreader = new InputStreamReader(inputreader, Charset.forName("ISO-8859-1"));

Hi Chris,
it sounds to me like you are trying to somehow get the upper-ascii characters in DOS to render (upper-ascii is what I call them). Stuff like the characters for creating borders, the different symbols common to fonts like Terminal, MS Linedraw, GWTE_437.. aka the Cp437 charset.
I'll trade answers with you... did you get the Terminal font itself to render in java (w/o the special chars).
I wrote a custom sort of drawString that used character glyphs and a custom mapping to be able to get the special symbols from MS Linedraw so my IRC Client would be able to render the special characters correctly.
I got the code at home... but answer my question and if your interested in my code to draw the upper-ascii characters let me know I'll post it in a day or so.

Hello,
I have a problem with a compiled program on labview 6i.

Cedric,
This problem was fixed in the LabVIEW 6.0.2 update. You can download this update (along with the updated runtime engine) from our website.
Good luck with your application, and have a pleasant day.

• What is causing this problem and what are you doing to fix it? Should I just go back to Internet Explorer?

Every single day, Firefox crashes and sometimes in the most inopertune time. This is very frustrating as some of the times I can not go back in and correct what I was not able to do due to your site crashing. What is causing this problem and what are you doing to fix it? Should I just go back to Internet Explorer?

First, you must use a specific [[Managing profiles|profile]] for Firefox 4.0 Beta and keep your current one for Firefox 3.6 to prevent interferences between the two versions.
For your problem:
# [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] could be a cause.
# If not 1. and if it does not happen in [[Safe Mode]], you must disable HW acceleration in Options > Advanced > General. If it solves your issue, your graphic driver is out-of-date and must be updated. Go to your computer manufacturer support site.

Hi,
Which operating system are you running on?
Try starting the organizer while holding down the shift key. Hopefully, it should load the Catalog Manager.
Select your current catalog and click on the Repair button. Once it has finished, click on the Open button to see if the catalog opens.
Good luck,
Brian

• My garageband can't be used because when I open a project (new or old) the program extends beyond the bottom of the display screen and I can't access what is below the bottom of the screen (like the record button). I know there's a simple fix, but what?

two things to try: either click the green "zoom" bottom at the topLeft of the window in the title bar, or go to your System Prefs and then Displays, and increase the resolution that is used

are you sure its not just the way you are viewing the photo? you don't even see noise on the preview in Bridge and when I say preview I mean when zooming into the preview window. My thought process being in PS you are zoomed in more

Glad you seem to have sorted things out.
The warning about the warranty is light hearted, I think at one stage it warned "here be dragons" but also intended to make us think as it warns that making changes may produce problems.
