Problem importing a package

Hello all! I'm relatively new to Java programming, but an experienced programmer in other languages, which is why this problem is so disturbing.
I'm running through an exercise in the Thinking in Java book that introduces you to packages and importing packages. The code runs fine if I explicitly import the package by name, but not if I use the "*" wildcard.
I'm running on Windows NT, and my CLASSPATH variable is:
CLASSPATH=.;D:\Java\Books
Here are the programs that work:
//P.java
package tools;
public class P {
  public static void rint(String s) {
    System.out.print(s);
  public static void rint(int i) {
       System.out.print(i);
  public static void rintln(String s) {
    System.out.println(s);
  public static void rintln(int i) {
       System.out.println(i);
//PrintTest.java
import tools.*;
public class PrintTest {
  public static void main(String[] args) {
       P.rint("Test String print - No line feed...");
       P.rintln("---");
       P.rint(1);
       P.rintln("");  //Force line feed.
       P.rintln(2);
       P.rintln("---");
}Both of these files reside in the D:\test directory, and I compile them from that directory.
To compile the P.java program, I use the following statement: javac -d . P.java
The P.class file ends up in the D:\test\tools directory, which is fine. When I try to compile the PrintTest.java file, I get an error for each reference to the P class as follows:
PrintTest.java:6: cannot resolve symbol
symbol: method rint (java.lang.String)
location: class P
P.rint("Test string print - No line feed");
However, if I change the first line in the PrintTest.java program to:
import tools.P;
Then it works.
Why is the import working with an explicit call to the class, but not with the "*" wildcard? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've been through all of the forums, the documentation, etc. and can't find a definitive answer.
Thanks in advance,
Tim

Here is the error that I'm getting when I compile the PrintTest.java file.
PrintTest.java:6: cannot resolve symbol
symbol: method rint (java.lang.String)
location: class P
P.rint("Test string print - No line feed");
Actually, I get one error for each reference to the P class in the PrintTest code, so there are 6 errors total.
The P.class file is in the \tools directory under the directory where the PrintTest.java file exists, so the "import tools.P;" command works and the file runs OK, but when I switch to the "import tools.*" command, I get these errors. I'm just confused as to why it works when it is explicitly imported, but not when it is wild-carded.
Thanks for the help! I'll keep trying...

    Hello,

    Anything else has to be done while importing a transport package (wpc web content).
    Thanks

    I never had to enter object ID, when I was exporting. The only required property was the name of the package. I was following this document to export WPC Web Content http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70/helpdata/EN/46/77da3bb8036ef0e10000000a1553f6/frameset.htm

    The photoshop version is genuine.
    I am using wired connection.  The router has four ports and the other PC which runs vista is in one of the other ports.  It also has photoshop on it as I can't deactivate it, although I've just read somewhere on the internet that I am allowed to use this version of CS3 photoshop on two different PCs.  I didn't know that.  Perhaps I don't need to deactivate that at all.  I thought I was doing something naughty having the programme on both PCs even though I have tried to take it off the first one.
    I haven't networked the two computers although the latest PC was networked to two other computers when some of my family lived here last year, they did the networking.  I've just looked through explorer and the old PC is showing as on the network, but I can't connect to it.  I don't know enough about networking to connect the two.  I double clicked on its name through explorer and a network error came up so clicked on diagnose which told me that the new PC was configured correctly but that the device was not responding.  Another network problem perhaps or maybe part of the same one, I don't know.
    Windows 7 Home Premium is on the new PC, the other has Windows Vista Home Premium.
    I have tried using the windows troubleshooter but it isn't as successful as the HP Network check which at least finds the fault and corrects it until the PC is turned off, I don't understand why that fix can't be permanent.  Windows troubleshooter can't find the problem at all.
    The only solution I can see at the moment is to leave the PC switched on all the time, but my husband says NO, take photoshop off, thats the problem.  I'm beginning to think he is right.  I'm spending so much time trying to solve the problem I'm not getting any enjoyment out of using photoshop at all.
    My head hurts!

  • Problem with importing jsp packages

    Hi guys. I'm having a problem compiling a class that imports jsp packages.
    I'm getting errors along the lines of:
    C:\>javac HelloTag.java
    HelloTag.java:4: package javax.servlet.jsp does not exist
    import javax.servlet.jsp.*;
    ^
    HelloTag.java:5: package javax.servlet.jsp.tagext does not exist
    import javax.servlet.jsp.tagext.*;
    - I've copied jsp-api.jar and servlet-api.jar to a folder that's in my path: C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_03\lib\ext
    Any suggestion?
    Thanks.

    U have to add the path into the classpath
    set CLASSPATH=%CLASSPATH%;jsp-api.jar ....
    the compile in the same cmd window
    Do not use the CLASSPATH environment variable. Use the -classpath option while compiling and specify the path to your jar file.
    javac -classpath <path to jar file> filename.javacheers,
    ram.

  • Problem importing packages via ICE??

    Hello,
    I am running Portal 6.0 on Windows Server. For one of the business package that is to be implemented in my Portal, i have to deploy two files as a pre-requisite that are associated with SAP Note 660777(https://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/660777). I have imported the "com.sap.pct.crm.kmconfig40.par" file but having problems deploying "fullupdate_completeBP602.zip". I must admit that i haven't got much idea about importing packages via ICE as i have never used it before.
    I tried to import it via, Portal->System Administration->System Configuration. In there, Actions->Import. When i point to the "fullupdate_completeBP602.zip" file and say Preview, i get a error message saying "Enter a valid configuration archive name". Isn't this the right way to import this package? Please guide. Thanks.
    Regards,

    I suggest you also ask in the KM forum about ICE. There is also some information in the SAP help pages about ICE. For example an overview of it can be found

    Divyanshu - sorry to ask but can you explain why i need to update r3load and r3trans to resolve this error? Just want to understand why I'm doing a correction so I can learn from the same.
    Also, can you clarify the file update process:
    For R3load:
    a) the r3load used by the command is dated 8/16/2011 (location:C:\usr\sap\AVV\SYS\exe\uc\NTAMD64\...)
    b) the r3load i have in my db folder is dated 10/23/2011 (location:C:\Final\Installer\BS7i2011_Installation_Master_\DATA_UNITS\BS2011_IM_WINDOWS_X86_64\ORA\UC\...)
    Do i replace (a) with (b)?
    For R3trans:
    How do I update this file?

  • Problem Running SSIS Package with a SQL Server Agent

    SQL Server: SQL Server 2012
    VS: Visual Studio 2012
    Hello,
          I have been having a problem running SSIS packages by using a SQL Server Agent job. I first created these SSIS packages in a separate IS project in Visual Studio. I imported the packages to the Integration Services (Package
    Store) instance on my SQL Server and tried to create a job that would run them from there.
          At first I read around about needing a proxy account to allow the agent/packages to access the file system since these packages are importing data from a flat file in the SQL database. So I created a temporary admin user to
    use as the user for the agent. I did this by going to Services.msc on the server and linked the account the agent's "logon as". Then arose another issue where I am getting an error about using the incorrect type for my connection managers.

    Hello Karthik
    I know the list is long. Unfortunately I have never had such a long list of inactive objects in the system during an update or upgrade. But I believe you can make use of the mass activation program RADMASG0 to have them activated. The other option I can think of is to use the function module RS_INACTIVE_OBJECTS_LIST to list all the inactive objects and see whether they can be mass activated from there. I believe it is possible to activate all from there after selecting a block. (Never tried so I cannot guarantee).

  • OWB Can't Import Existing Package with Collection Data Type as Arguments

    I created a package and compiled it successfully as the follows:
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    CREATE OR REPLACE PACKAGE PACKAGE_TEST AS
    TYPE Num_LIST IS TABLE of NUMBER INDEX BY BINARY_INTEGER;
    FUNCTION TEST_FUNCTION1 ( arg1 NUMBER, arg2 NUMBER) RETURN NUMBER;
    FUNCTION TEST_FUNCTION2 ( args NUM_LIST) RETURN NUMBER;
    END PACKAGE_TEST;
    CREATE OR REPLACE PACKAGE BODY PACKAGE_TEST AS
    FUNCTION TEST_FUNCTION1 ( arg1 NUMBER, arg2 NUMBER) RETURN NUMBER IS
    ln_sum NUMBER;
    BEGIN
    ln_sum := arg1 + arg2;
         RETURN ln_sum;
    EXCEPTION
    WHEN OTHERS THEN
    RETURN -10000;
    END TEST_FUNCTION1;
    FUNCTION TEST_FUNCTION2 ( args NUM_LIST) RETURN NUMBER IS
         ln_sum NUMBER;
    BEGIN
    ln_sum :=0;
         FOR i IN 1.. args.COUNT LOOP
         ln_sum := ln_sum + args( i );
         END LOOP;
         RETURN ln_sum;
    EXCEPTION
    WHEN OTHERS THEN
    RETURN -10000;
    END TEST_FUNCTION2;
    END PACKAGE_TEST;
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    Then I tried to import the package into OWB (9.2). The problem came: all the package body and
    the specification of TEST_FUNCTION1 were imported, but the package specification of
    TEST_FUNCTION2 couldn't be imported. The IMPORT FILTER gave an error message:
    "TEST_FUNCTION2: Argument Data type is not supported".
    How to resolve this problem? It is very import for our project, since we have to import some
    packages with user_defined collection data types as arguments.
    Thank you.
    Lushu

    Hi Lushu,
    Unfortunately this is indeed not supported and I would not know how to work around this one. The only way I guess that this would work is to not import it, and then use Expressions to call the function with inputs.

  • Importing Inter-package classes

    hello
    I have never had this problem before but I just 'downgraded' to JDK 1.1.8 because the code will be used on my PDA. I am trying to import Inter-package classes but the compiler it cannot find the classes I've imported. This code was working perfectly in j2sdk1.4.2_02
    I think the code is right all files saved in folder graphs and beginning looks like this:
    package graphs;
    import graphs.AxisParameter;

    Yes they are in the same folder with 'package graphs;' in the 1st line,
    i've tried with and without package.class to no avail
    the exact errors i'm getting are
    without the package in front
    error: File .\CustomLabel.class does not contain type CustomLabel as expected, but type graphs.CustomLabel. Please remove the file or make sure it appears in the correct subdirectory of the class path
    with the graphs.CustomLabel i get the following errors
    error: Invalid class File formate: .\graphs\CustomLabel.class, wrong version: 46, expected 45
    2nd error: Class graphs.CustomLabel not found in import.

  • Problem with Java-Packages in JavaFX-Scripts

    Hello!
    What I'm trying to do is using a class I've built in my project in a JavaFX-Script, my problem is that the compiler keeps telling me my package wouldn't exist.
    My filestructure is basically the following:
    src
    |-com.foo.java
    |-- MyClass.java
    |-com.foo.javafx
    |-- MyFXScript.fx
    I've tried importing the package or just writing the fully qualified classname when trying to create an instance, the messages didn't differ. I'm not at home right now so I don't remember the exact compiler-message, but it was something like "Package does not exist: com.foo.java".
    Any ideas? :-)
    Kind regards,
    Joshua

    It works on my system.
    MyClass.java
    package com.foo.java;
    public class MyClass {
        @Override
        public String toString() {
            return "My Class";
    MyFXScript.fx
    package com.foo.javafx;
    import com.foo.java.*;
    var myClass = new MyClass();
    println(myClass);standard-run:
    My Class

    jws-run:

  • Import and package does not exist

    I have a program and I wish to import a package that I've made. I have tried to do this with:
    import clientcode.*;but I keep getting the error message java:8: package clientcode does not exist
    I am completely new to Java and have no idea how to get around this. Please help

    Do you use ide or compile classes from command line?
    Most likely it's a classpath problem.

  • Importing Database Package into OWB changes position of parameters .. Nasty

    Hi all,
    Anyone else having the same problem ? Any solutions ? Or is this a bug.
    When a package is imported from a DB schema, OWB kindly changes the order in which the parameters are listed.
    The effect is that any mapping using the procedure or function will not have the correct parameters passed to.
    For example.
    DB_Test_proc
    io_name_in in out varhar2,
    o_clean_name_out out varchar2
    After importing in OWB the parameter positions are reversed .... very nasty.
    Anyone can help or do I raise a bug ?
    Regards
    Nick

    Hi Borkur,
    Dropping and re-importing the package would work well (works for another module) but this is a package whose procedures and functions are heavily referenced in several mappings and process flows (supports the custom job management). So, I would be forced to re-synchronize them all which I want to avoid. The other way would be to modify the package manually (only the signature is needed not the code since I will not deploy it from OWB, in fact, I deployed it from Oracle Designer !!!). But OWB Paris doesn't allow this. Once imported, always imported. You can modify imported tables, procedures, functions but not packages. Or is there a way ???
    regards
