Problem in Treemap

Problem occur when go to code
WordData data = (WordData)iter.next();Below is the code i have
printWords(words2.values());
static void printWords(Collection wordData) {
System.out.println(words2.values());
Iterator iter = wordData.iterator();
string ="";
while (iter.hasNext()) {
WordData data = (WordData)iter.next();
System.out.println(data.word);
string = string + "   " + data.word + " (" + data.count + ")" + "\n";
System.out.println(string);
static class WordData {
String word;
int count;
WordData(String w) {
word = w;
count = 1; // The initial value of count is 1.
} Error encountered

I copy the sortedmap words from print.java to Display.java
Display.words2=words;
Is this will cause the words or Worddata to missing some data?

• Sorting problem in TreeMap, please help urgent :-((

Hi
Following is a program, please execute it to see the problem. I am adding four elements in the TreeMap. The problem is when I add the elements it never compares the newly added element with the first element. I was sick of it so to test the TreeMap I created my own small class and defined a Comparator for that class. Following is the code which shows the problem in TreeMap. Am I doing something wrong? Please help its urgent.
import java.util.*;
public class SortingCollection {
public static void main(String[] args) {
SortingCollection sortingCollection = new SortingCollection();
sortingCollection.sortingTest();
public void sortingTest() {
TreeMap treeMap = new TreeMap();
treeMap.put(new Test("Bhushan", 1022), new Integer(1022));
treeMap.put(new Test("Wasil", 1023), new Integer(1023));
treeMap.put(new Test("Ifti", 1020), new Integer(1020));
treeMap.put(new Test("Roshan", 1021), new Integer(1021));
System.out.println(treeMap);
Test test = new Test("Bhushan", 1028);
treeMap.put(test, new Integer(1022));
System.out.println(treeMap);
public class Test implements Comparable {
public String name;
public int age;
public Test(String name, int age) {
this.name = name;
this.age = age;
public int compareTo(Object toBeCompared) {
Test casted = (Test) toBeCompared;
if (name.equals(casted.name)) {
System.out.println("Returning 0 for " + name + " " + casted.name);
return 0;
System.out.println("Returning -1 for " + name + " " + casted.name);
return -1;
public String toString() {
return "[" + name + ", " + age + "]";
}

If you are using TreeMap, you should want the keys to be immutable. You can't change the state of the keys of a Map such that their natural order will change, or chaos will happen.
If the key is the GateKeeperInfo class (which has host, port, and # of users as its data members) and the value is "some other object reference which you need", and this reference is closely tied to the GateKeeperInfo, have you considered making it a member of the GateKeeperInfo?
That way you don't need this TreeMap business. You can have the natural ordering imposed on the GateKeeperInfo class (which is apparently comparing the host and port only). You can also have a Comparator object that can compare these objects in a different way (# of users, for instance).
public class MyClass implements Comparable
String host;
int    port;
int    currNumUsers;
Object someOtherObjectReferenceINeed;
// or if the object reference you need is an Integer, make that last member
// an int...
// Also, let's keep a Comparator in here for comparing # of users.
// See further down for actual implementation...
public static final Comparator BY_NUM_USERS = new NumUsersComparator();
// Use the equal methods to determine whether or not host and port matches
public boolean equals( Object obj )
// Use the compareTo method to compare 2 instances in terms of host and port
public int compareTo( Object obj )
// Make this object take care of changing # of users, outside of the
// Comparable interface.
public int getNumUsers();
public int bumpNumUsers( int byThisAmount ); // changes # of users...
// Beef up this object to take advantage of someOtherObjectReferenceINeed
// Use this Comparator object to compare 2 instances of MyClass
// according to # of users.
public class NumUsersComparator implements Comparator
public int compare( Object a, Object b )
MyClass left      = (MyClass)a;
MyClass right      = (MyClass)b;
// I am assuming both # of users are of the same sign...positive
return ( right.getNumUsers() - left.getNumUsers() );
// Now when you need to compare, you can do it 2 different ways...
// You can use whatever Collection you fits, List, Set, ...
// I am going to use List in this case
List gateways = new ArrayList;
// add the objects...
gateways.add( /* . . . */ );
// Now let's sort in terms of user/port
Collections.sort( gateways );
// Let's sort in terms of number of users...
Collections.sort( gateways, MyClass.BY_NUM_USERS );
// I am going to mix them around now...
Collections.shuffle( gateways );
// Now let's find the gateway w/ the largest # of users...
MyClass currMaxGateway = Collections.max( gateways, MyClass.BY_NUM_USERS );

• Problem with TreeMap and Vector

Hello,
this is the problem I have:
I declare a Vector like this:
Vector<String> theVector = new Vector<String>();
I put the String needed into the Vector:
theVector.add("blabla")
In the other hand I had created a TreeMap like this:
private TreeMap<Integer, Vector<String>> theTreeMap;
I now when I try to put the Key and the Element like this my program crash:
theTreeMap.put(1096,theVector);
I think I don't put the data on the good way in the TreeMap...
Any Idea? Thank you very much

• Problem with TreeMap

I had a problem that I believe was similar to this posting:
http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jsp?forum=24&thread=200558
although mine involves a TreeMap. I am adding approximately 250 mappings to a TreeMap, where the key is a String. Each key is unique, and, just to be sure, I analyzed the hashCode of each key, and they were also unique.
After adding all of the mappings, however, the total size of the TreeMap is only 40! Somewhere, app. 210 mappings were overwritten. I added some debug code and found that after I added the 10th element, the size of the TreeMap did grow. Then the TreeMap would grow only on every 3rd mapping that I would add.
The above-referenced posting mentioned that the rehashing of the map might cause it to overwrite existing values, so it made sense to set the initial capacity high enough to ensure that no rehashing occurred. Unfortunately, that posting dealt with a HashMap, which allows you to set the initial capacity. TreeMaps do not. In order to mimic this behavior, I added all of the mappings into a HashMap with an initial capacity of 250. When the HashMap was loaded, I created the TreeMap (with a unique Comparator), and then used the putAll() method of TreeMap to put the entire HashMap into the TreeMap. Voila! All 250 mappings were there.
Nonetheless, this seems to be a very strange bug with TreeMap. Does anyone know why this happened?

Sorry. Figured out the problem. It was all my fault (based on the comparator I was using, which caused the keys to be overwritten). how dare I accuse Sun of deploying buggy software. :)

• A problem with treemap

In a file, I have 400, 000 lines of data. There are around 16000 keys. Each key can have multiple values.
eg:
Key - Var1 - Var2
5 - 132.1 - 0.678
5 - 128.5 - 0.523
2 - 110.0 - 0.253
6 - 20.0 - 0.245
I sorted using TreeMap. However, only 12463 keys gets added to TreeMap. I don't know what's wrong . If someone can help me out with this problem, that would be great!!!
-Karthik

So if you want to use the standard HashMap you have to deal with multiple keys yourself.
One way is to first check if the key's already in the map. If it isn't you store the key/item pair as you do now. If the key's already in the map you switch to a collection of items using a collection, for example a LinkedList. The end result is that each key is uniqueande there are two types of items; single items and collections of items.

• A collection problem with TreeMap

Could somebody please help me with this kind of problem
I couldn't get the correct object from the get(key) method and all the objects in the map become the last object put in, when I use the followings:
Collection keys=this.keySet();
Iterator iter=keys.iterator();
while(iter.hasNext())
XX xx=(XX)this.get(iter.next());
But when I try to iterate the values instead of the keys, the objects are correct.
Collection values=this.values();
Iterator iter=values.iterator();
while(iter.hasNext())
XX xx=(XX)iter.next();
But I do need the get(key) method sometimes.
Anybody got some suggestions please.
Thanks.

Thanks.
I am using TreeMap. I actually don't want the keys to get overwritten, so the keys in the Map is comparable according to the counter.
There is a class extends TreeMap. I need to use another getElement method sometimes.
public class MyTree extends TreeMap{
public MyTree () {
public Element getElement(int id, double rate)
Collection values=this.values();
Iterator iter=values.iterator();
while(iter.hasNext())
Element ele=( Element)iter.next();
if(ele.isMe(id, rate))
return ele;
return null;
public String toString()
String eleString="";
Collection values=this.values();
Iterator iter=values.iterator();
while(iter.hasNext())
Element ele=( Element)iter.next();
eleString += ele.toString()+ "\n";
return eleString;
}

• Problems using TreeMap to detirmane word frequency

Hi!
I'm using Java TreeMap to determine the amount of times words appear in a text file, however, I seem to run into a little problem:
The Algorithm is as follows: Simply check if the words already exists in the tree(The words themselves are used a keys), then get the value(integer) and increase this value. As the .put statement only updates the value associated with the key, it shouldn't store double values... right?
Although this is my question, it still isn't the problem. The problem is the following: To update the value, I simply want to use the ‘.get’ statement. Java API specifically states the following :
“get(Object key)
Returns the value to which the specified key is mapped, or null if this map contains no mapping for the key.”
So, getting it as an int, I should be able to just add to this right? NO! I get a compatibility error, stating that I can’t assign Java.lang.Object to int. Please Help!
Here’s my code:
Map list = new TreeMap();
if(list.containsValue(word))
//assign integer to current word's value
//int count used
wcount = list.get(word) + 1; //Error: operator + cannot be applied to java.lang.Object,int
list.put(word, wcount);
//however, this will work, but you can't cast Objects to ints:
//ocount is now object
Object ocount = list.get(word);
else
list.put(word, 1);

Although this is my question, it still isn't the problem. The problem is the following: To update the value, I simply want to use the ‘.get’ statement.java.lang.Integer is immutable. So, you would have to first get() the value and put() the incremented value back. To use only get(), you would have to use your own mutable int wrapper. Then, you can just get() and increment the value.
Also, about your error
wcount = (Integer)list.get(word) + 1;// your error would go In addition to learning about Generics (as suggested by kevin), you should also learn about, primitive Wrappers, immutability, Auto boxing/unboxing, Collections framework. The Sun Java tutorial would help you.
Thanks!

SergejHi, doing the
new String("My String")
is not really a good idea.
One rather useless string instance is created.
just put the string literal put (..., "My String");
Just had to make this comment, no offence.

• Collections problem - Sorting object (not key) in treemap

Hello everyone,
I don't know if TreeMap is the right thing for what I want to do, but I haven't found anything better yet. What I want to do is have a tree map like that
index -- value (Double)
1        500
2        450
3        500   (Multiple value)
4 123so I used a TreeMap, but what I want to do is get the indexes with the highest 5 values for example. Should I still use TreeMap? Is there a simple way to keep the values sorted rather than the keys (indices)?
Thanx

My problem is though, I want to sort them but then get the index of the minimum for example and with the LinkedList, I lose the mapping. With the treemap, I also cannot get the key (index) given an object, only the other way round. Is there a way to handle this?

• TreeMap.put() Problem

I am having a problem with adding different types of objects as keys to a TreeMap, although the javadoc says that the method takes two arguments of type object, I am getting a casting error when I try the following.
TreeMap matched = new TreeMap();
matched.put(new Integer(2), myObject);
I get a:
java.lang.ClassCastException: java.lang.Integer
If I do it as:
matched.put(String.valueOf(2), myObject);
it works fine.
Am I missing something here (since its 5:00pm on Friday)?

In addition to being Comparable, all the keys MUST be mutually comparable.
For example if you put in all String or all Integer keys everything would work. But if you mixed String and Integer keys in the same TreeMap, you would get the error you are getting.

• TreeSet/TreeMap problem

Hi everyone!
I'm trying to implement a Scheduler which insert some Deadline in a TreeSet (sorted by expiration timestamp): another Thread "read" TreeSet in order to remove Deadline expired. For this purpose my Deadline class implements Comparable interface and the its method compareTo in this way:
public int compareTo (Object obj) {
Deadline d = (Deadline) obj;
if (this.deadline > d.deadline)
return 1;
else if (d.deadline > this.deadline)
return -1;
else {
if (this.equals(obj))
return 0;
else
return 1;
}My class Deadline doesn't extends any other class and doesn't re-implements method equals.
Belove part of my "killer" thread which "read" TreeSet:
while (v.size() > 0) {
dl = (Deadline) v.first();
if (dl.deadline <= last) {
v.remove(dl);
ans = dl.deadline;
else {
ans = dl.deadline;
break;
.........In some cases (probably when timestamp deadline of Deadline class is equal to that of another Deadlne) removal of Deadline is not performed: TreeSet method first() give me a Deadline, but then I can't remove it from TreeSet. So TreeSet size is never decremented and I hava an infinite while cicle. Probably the problem is my implementation of method compareTo but I can't understand what is wrong!
Can somenone help me?
Thank you all in advance!
Diego

I want to insert in my TreeSet Deadline with the same timestamp deadline, because this can happen. When timestamp is equal, get/remove method of TreeMap should navigate in its internal tree and search, between all Deadline with the same timestamp, that which satisfy equals check.

• Nested collections - Esp., TreeMap problem

I am a little frustrated. Please take a look at this.
I have a class for comparison. This is pretty simple; just do the opposite of natural TreeMap for Integer and Double.
============================
package parseagain;
import java.util.Comparator;
public class ReverseComparator<T> implements Comparator<T> {
public int compare(T o1, T o2) {
if (o1 instanceof Integer) {
if ((Integer)o1 < (Integer)o2) return 1;
else if ((Integer)o1 == (Integer)o2) return 0;
else return -1;
else if (o1 instanceof Double) {
if ((Double)o1 < (Double)o2) return 1;
else if ((Double)o1 == (Double)o2) return 0;
else return -1;
else {
throw new ClassCastException();
==============================
Then, I have a long program, part of which is shown below. What it does is that put pixel information into a HashMap of TreeMap, then retrieve them. you know what? this prints 'NULL' like shown below it.
==============================
HashMap<Integer, TreeMap<Integer, Integer>> colorXY = new HashMap<Integer, TreeMap<Integer, Integer>>();

• Problem: Empty id attribute is not allowed

Hi, I'm a newby with JSF and can't understand how to make some really simple things to work.
One of the problems occurred, when I tried to make a dataTable for choosing locales.
Simple table, like
language code | button "choose"
language code | button "choose"
language code | button "choose"
, and actionListener attached to buttons. The language code is shown by <h:outputText value="${locale}">, works just fine! But when I add <h:commandButton id="${locale}" value="#{msg.set}" actionListener="#{tryoutsView.chooseLocaleAL}"/>, an error appears "Empty id attribute is not allowed"!
So I have two questions about that:
(1) Why ${locale} is normally calculated in one place, and is null nearby? Didn't find any clues on that in official tutorial.
(2) How do I make this work (make id attribute take expression)?
And one more question on related subject
(3) Why did official tutorial authors use "synchronized" mark for method, that determines content of h:dataTable? (http://download.oracle.com/javaee/6/tutorial/doc/bnaty.html#bnauc)
The code:

If you have/intend nothing useful to say, then, please, stop trashing the thread.I don't consider asking questions, or pointing out tautologies, to be 'trashing the thread'.
(1) Why ${locale} is normally calculated in one place, and is null nearby? It isn't 'calculated' anywhere in your code. It is set by the listbox. Until the user selects a value it doesn't have one. It iis empty. Hence the error message that I keep directing your attention to.
(2) How do I make this work (make id attribute take expression)?Make sure the value of the expression isn't empty.
And one more question on related subject
(3) Why did official tutorial authors use "synchronized" mark for method, that determines content of h:dataTable? (http://download.oracle.com/javaee/6/tutorial/doc/bnaty.html#bnauc)
Because 'items' is probably not thread-safe.
If you want any further help from me I suggest you mind your manners. It is clear that you have very little useful to say here. You seem to have no intention of answering any of the questions I asked you. Nor am I convinced that you understand the difference between 'empty' and 'omitted' that I have been trying to get you to see. It is impossible to help those who will not help themselves, and abusing those who are trying to help them is not a rational policy.

• Need Help converting objects in a TreeMap to String

This app counts the number of times a word occurs in a document. I used a HashMap to store the key and value. The I sorted them using TreeMap. Now I need to return the key (String) and value (Integer Object) so they may be print like this -- 'key: value'.
Example:
that: 3
This mean the word 'that' appeared 3 times in the document. Below is my toString() method. TreeMap sorts everything for me but I cant return 'map' because it is not a String. So I iterated through each key and value in the map. But now I dont know how to put all the iterations into 1 String value. I would greatly appreciate any help. Code below.
Thanks in advance.
public String toString() {
Object key = null;
Object value = null;
map = new TreeMap(map);
Set getKeys = map.keySet();
Iterator iterKeys = getKeys.iterator();
while (iterKeys.hasNext()) {
key = (String)iterKeys.next();
value = map.get(key))
return; // i need to return a String here
} // end toString()
} // end class

I dont remember posting to the "new Java forum", but I might have. My browser locked up on me so I am not sure what happened. If I did please excuse my double post.
Are you familar with a way to solve my problem?
