Problem: Materialized View between Oracle servers w/different CHARACTERSET

I am trying to create a MATERIALIZED VIEW where the master table is a remote Oracle 8 server with NLS_CHARACTERSET = 'WE8ISO8859P1'. The destination view is an Oracle 10g with NLS_CHARACTERSET = 'AL32UTF8'.
I am getting error: ORA-12703: this character set conversion is not supported.
I've tried to use CONVERT on my SELECT statment but according to the error message, CONVERT does not support 'AL32UTF8'.
I need help. Please!

First off, I'd strongly suggest reading through Metalink Note 237593.1 Problems connecting to AL32UTF8 databases from older versions (8i and lower).
There is a good chance that the destination database character set will need to be converted to UTF8 rather than AL32UTF8 (assuming that this isn't going to cause issues with surrogate pairs). You may be able to keep the destination character set unchanged if you install at least the 8.1.7.4 patchset on the source database as well as a hanfddful of different one-off patches, but it looks like you're probably going to need to change the destination character set.

  • Creating a Materialized View in Oracle 8i

    Hello -
What are the steps and privileges required to create a materialized view in Oracle 8i?
    Thanks

To create a materialized view in your own schema:
You must have been granted the CREATE MATERIALIZED VIEW system privilege and either the CREATE TABLE or CREATE ANY TABLE system privilege.
You must also have access to any master tables of the materialized view that you do not own, either through a SELECT object privilege on each of the tables or through the SELECT ANY TABLE system privilege.
To create a materialized view in another user's schema:
You must have the CREATE ANY MATERIALIZED VIEW system privilege.
The owner of the materialized view must have the CREATE TABLE system privilege. The owner must also have access to any master tables of the materialized view that the schema owner does not own (for example, if the master tables are on a remote database), and to any materialized view logs defined on those master tables, either through a SELECT object privilege on each of the tables or through the SELECT ANY TABLE system privilege.
    Thanks

It's not a process that can be explained in a forums posting. You have to understand the steps.

  • Materialized view in Oracle 9i/10g SE?

    Hi All,
Can we define MV's in standard edition of oracle9i & 10g database? If yes, are there any limitations on creation of MV's in Standard edition compare to Enterprise edition like Query rewrite, creation of log tables etc?
As per link : http://www.dba-oracle.com/art_so_oracle_standard_enterprise_edition.htm , MV's seems to be avialable in EE.
Also let me know if there is any document available to general public for comparision of various edition features of oracle database version.
    Thanks in advance,
    AJ

As far as I'm aware, you can create MV in standard and also there is no limitation that I'm aware off
    Standard and Enterprise Edition
    A. Basic replication (MV replication)
    \- transaction based
    - row-level
    - asynchronous from master table to MV (Materialized View)
    - DML replication only
    - database 7 / 8.0 / 8i / 9i / 10g
    Variants:
    1. Read-only MV replication
    2. Updateable MV replication:
2.1 asynchronous from MV to master
2.2 synchronous from MV to master
    3. Writeable MV replication
    Enterprise Edition only
    B. Multimaster replication
    \- transaction based
    - row-level or procedural
    - asynchronous or synchronous
    - DML and DDL replication
    - database 7 / 8.0 / 8i / 9i / 10g
    - Enterprise Edition only
    Variants:
    1. row-level asynchronous replication

    3. procedural asynchronous replication
    4. procedural synchronous replication
    C. Streams replication
(Standard Edition 10g can execute Apply process)
    \- (redo) log based
    - row-level
    - asynchronous
    - DML and DDL replication
    - database 9i / 10g (10g has Down Streams Capture)

  • Problem to connect between Oracle 10g xe and VB2010 at Vista sp2

    Introduction
Hi guys, good day... NEED RESCUE!! SOS!! Hmm.. i have trouble been 1 weeks trying connect between Oracle 10g xe and VB2010 on window vista sp2. Actaully im very new at Oracle 10g xe and VB2010 but i got a project is going to build up system database and i figure out Oracle 10g xe and VB2010 can use free so i just chows these appication to be my project. I been search around internet and there is several things i was found about the connection but i has try and tried still it wont work out.
    Things i found and learned
    Oracle
    1. I have download Oracle 10g XE and installed in my windows vista sp2.
    2. I notice the Oracle Developer Tools is needed for VB2010 (To add reference 'Oracle.DataAccess'). So i was downloaded ODT11beta and installed
    3. I also edit TNSNAMES to following below:
    OraDb =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = shin-PC)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SERVER = DEDICATED)
    (SERVICE_NAME = orcl)
    4. My sqlnet like following below:
    SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES = (NTS)
    NAMES.DIRECTORY_PATH= (TNSNAMES, EZCONNECT)
5.I have try tnsping OraDB and its works.
    6. I monitoring task manager and OracleServicesXE is running.
    7. ora_dba is added in Group.
    Problem in SQLPLUS
When i try connect SQLPLUS in cmd i get ERROR: ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error.
i . In cmd i type sqlplus and enter then i been ask for username and password.
ii. After i insert my username and password and enter then i get the error of ORA-12560.
    Visual Basic 2010
    1. First i created my project, drawing label and button for test connection.
    2. Then, i add reference Oracle.DataAccess into my project.
    3. I type following script into my vb form:
    Imports System.Data
    Imports Oracle.DataAccess.Client
    Imports Oracle.DataAccess.Types
    Public Class Logon
    Private Sub cmdLogon_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles cmdLogon.Click
Dim oradb As String = "Data Source = OraDb; User Id = system; Password = shin;"
    Dim conn As New OracleConnection(oradb)
    conn.Open()
    Dim cmd As New OracleCommand
    cmd.Connection = conn
cmd.CommandText = "select SName from Staff where SName = shin"
    cmd.CommandType = CommandType.Text
Dim dr As OracleDataReader = cmd.ExecuteReader()
    dr.Read()
    lblOra.Text = dr.Item("SName")
    conn.Dispose()
    End Sub
    End Class
    Problem in VB2010
When i run my project and press the button i get error message ORA-12514: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified at conn.Open()
    Extra Question*
    1. Im notice in my netbook xp home sp2, before i install ODT11beta my sqlplus look fine thought cmd but after i installed ODT11beta its same problem with my Vista sp2 now. Get error ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error :( I tried uninstall ODT11beta again and restart its work fine again. Which i really dun understand. Izzit the version ODT11 is not suitable for 10g xe? And i dunno this problem is related with my connection between oracle 10g xe and vb2010 or not. So confuse@@
    2. I wish to know more about connect between Oracle and VB, is there still a things i miss?(I mean steps or configuration that should i done)
    3. Or i just lower my VB version could make more easy? If yes, what version VB should i use that could work out with oracle 10g xe?
    4. Sorry for too bad my english but i really wish somebody could help me. Please try to understand my written or you could ask me mean if dont understand. Im stuck!! Stuck feel not really that good.....

  • Developing database views between Oracle and SQL Server tables

I am on Oracle 10.2, my organization has many SQL Server databases as well and has now made
SQL server as company standard so many new databases will be developed in SQL Server. It is of course
not possible to convert all Oracle databases to SQL Server, so a mix environment will exist. Two questions:
    1.     Is it possible to develop database views in Oracle (10g in my case) which join Oracle tables with tables in SQL Server 2008? If yes, how. I have seen some heterogeneous connectivity setup to connect SQL Server to Oracle, but not sure whether it is possible to develop a database view across two databases.
    2.     I know it is not a SQL Server forum, but many DBA’s know both Oracle and SQL Server. Is it possible to develop views in SQL Server (SQL Server 2008 R2 in my case) which join Oracle 10g and SQL Server 2008 tables? I know in SQL Server, there is way to set up linked servers, but do not know whether it is possible to develop views.
Thanks a lot for your insight.

You can create views that join local Oracle tables and remote SQL Server tables. I'm pretty sure you can do the reverse as well but I haven't personally done it.
However, I would be very concerned about the performance you'd get if you created that sort of view. You'd very frequently end up in a situation where Oracle has to pull all the data in the remote table across the database link in order to apply predicates and join the data locally. That could be disastrous from a performance standpoint.

  • Exporting data from a materialized view in Oracle 10g

Can anybody tell me how to export data to a remote server and import data in that remote server without using ftp utility. Actually I want to export the data from a materialized view to the remote server and import the same in the remote server.
If everything works well, I'll put the exporting and importing in a cronjob.
Please let me know how can I do that if that's possible .
    Any reply would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

Here is what I'm trying to do.
I created materialized views using multiple base tables in my local server and the base tables got populated using a long process.
Now I want to copy those data alone to some remote server since it doesn't have any base tables in it. For now, the remote server should depends on the localserver's data. I'm going to use the remote server's data for some testing purposes.
I know it is easy to create mat.views in the remote server but it doesn't have I don't want to do that now. I just want to copy the snapshots from my local server to the remote server.
Please let me know how to do that.
    Thanks.

    Option - 1
when Iam using a query in the materialized view query "select * from schema.table@link, with refresh mode fast option, the database throws an error " no table or view exists"
    Option - 2

I need to create the above materialized view query in the fast mode option, Please help.

    Hi,
Does a table named profit_mvw already exist?
The following example illustrates the two steps required to register a user-defined table. First, the table is created, then the materialized view is defined using exactly the same name as the table. This materialized view sum_sales_tab is eligible for use in query rewrite.
    CREATE TABLE sum_sales_tab
    PCTFREE 0 TABLESPACE demo
STORAGE (INITIAL 16k NEXT 16k PCTINCREASE 0) AS
    SELECT s.prod_id, SUM(amount_sold) AS dollar_sales,
    SUM(quantity_sold) AS unit_sales
    FROM sales s GROUP BY s.prod_id;
    CREATE MATERIALIZED VIEW sum_sales_tab
ON PREBUILT TABLE WITHOUT REDUCED PRECISION
    ENABLE QUERY REWRITE AS
    SELECT s.prod_id, SUM(amount_sold) AS dollar_sales,
    SUM(quantity_sold) AS unit_sales
    FROM sales s GROUP BY s.prod_id;

Assuming the different database is Oracle, you'll probably need to create a 'dblink'. Researching that topic should get you where you need to go.

  • Move CALs between license servers on different domains

    Hi,
We have two domains, Domain-1 and Domain-2.  All servers 2012 or 2012R2.   Formerly we only had RDP services on Domain-1 but now we need a limited number of clients on Domain-2 too.  Domain-1's RDS licensing server contains a number of CALs
never used.  How can we disable or transfer these never used CALs to the new Domain-2 RDS licensing server?
    regards Tor

    Hi Tor,
    Thanks for your comment.
You can use license manager to find the License server ID. Because let see “If the source license server is not available on the network when the Manage RDS CALs Wizard is run, you need to provide the license server ID for the source license server.”
For finding License server ID. Open RD Licensing manager. Right-click the license server for which you want to view the license server ID, and then click
    Properties.
Click the Connection Method tab. The license server ID is listed in the
lower portion of the dialog box.
The migration of your license server requires three stages. First, you must activate the new license server. Next, you need to deactivate the old server. Lastly, you need to move all the licenses from the old server to the new server. To do this, you
will need to contact Microsoft Clearinghouse over the telephone. You should to be prepared with the paperwork for the original TS licenses, as this data needs to be provided to clearinghouse personnel. If the original paperwork is lost, then you need to contact
your Microsoft TAM (Technical Account Manager) to obtain copies. (Quoted from below link)

  • Materialized view refresh using connected user db links

I have a general question. I have a materialized view that more or less joins tables from 2 databases.
For example I have a table X in database A, and a table Y in database B. I create the materialized view in the schema owning table X in database A. Tables A & B from both database are in the same schema with a synchronized password. My materialized view is created to join tables A & B using connected user DB links, and everything works when I create the view, however, it appears that the refresh is failing. I suspect this is because of the connected user link and there is no "logged" in user when the refresh occurs.
Does anyone know if it is possible to create a materialized view between 2 tables in different databases to refresh using a connected user DB link?
    Thanks.

    sybrandb
Why does it not make sense to have materialized views accross databases?
If a materialized view is essentially a remote copy, then wouldn't that imply accross databases? The only thing I did was to take it a step further and join it with a local table in the owning database.
About not being right about not having a connected user., that may be right, but I have a thought/question..... I equated this as using connected user links in jobs scheduled via dbms_job or dbms_scheduler, as when this runs there is no user connected to the database to provide remote credentials for the link... Essentially this seems to be like a cron job that fires on some schedule (whether a user is connected or not), it would seem to me that it might need to have credentials defined in order to be able to connect to the remote database.

  • Materialized View - 9i and 10g

    Hello,
    I have some questions:
    1. What are the differences in Materialized View between Oracle 9i and 10g?
    2. It is said that in 9i, Materialized View does not support self join, is it true? Does 10g has this restriction?
    3. It is said that in 10g, the select list cannot have subquery, is it true? Does 9i has this restriction?
    Thanks,

    1. Is a docs question: http://tahiti.oracle.com

Why do you find it easier to ask someone else to read the docs for you than to read them yourself?

  • NLS_LANG setting for a client with multiple Oracle servers

    Hello!
We have a web application which has to connect to one of the Oracle servers with different charactersets. When the NLS_LANG on the client is a single byte encoding and the server has a single byte encoding there are no problems. We have now a server with NLS_CHARACTERSET UTF8 and all special (hungarian accented) character are replaced.
When we set the client to UTF8 the rest of servers does not work.
What is the solution for one client and multiple servers with different encoding?
Is there a special key in connection string?
I tried to change the nls_lang with an alter session statement but without success.
    Regards,
    emeriqus

NLS_LANG is not depending on the database side, it's a CLIENT setting to "let Oracle know what encoding is used on the CLIENT" so that Oracle can do the conversion from the client encoding to the database (NLS_CHARACTERSET) encoding.
for ONE application/client the is only ONE correct NLS_LANG value, regardless of the database NLS_CHARACTERSET
If you web application is really an UTF8 application (check with your vendor) then you can perfectly use a UTF8 client setting and a 8 bit database
Of course, you will be limited to the database side in this case seen the 8 bit characterset does not know all the characters in UTF8
The fact that setting the NLS_LANG to UTF8 "does not work" with your web application is simply the fact your application is not a UTF8 env.
Setting nls_lang to UTF8 will not "magically" make your application UTF8, NLS_LANG is depending on the encoding used in the web server.
But the first thing to ask yourself is if CURRENT data is correctly in the Oracle database.
use SQLdeveloper to check the data, this is a "know good client" that needs no NLS configuration.
You can download it from http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/sql_developer/
If the data is displayed correctly in SQLdeveloper then you are sure it's correct in the database.
If data is WRONG in the database then that needs to be corrected first, "trying" different client side configurations will only make matter worse (even if they make the data "look good" )
