Problem remote disk

on my mac air do not have the cd player, I wanted to try to use the remote disk, but following the instruction recommended by Apple to enable this option (System Preferences-Sharing-tick sharing dvd or cd), but I do not appear in sharing, tick sharing dvd or cd (all other options are shares in this part).
then I tried to install the program through apple: Sharing DVDs or CDs and it says it is already installed on mac.

Hi jackts89,
I apologize, I'm a bit unclear on the exact nature of the issue you are describing. To clarify, you would be ticking the DVD or CD Sharing option on the computer that does have a optical disk drive. You may find the following article helpful:

  • XSan/iMovie HD problems - won't render to remote disk, please help!

Without warning last week my g4's started to crash on the simple task of rendering a title in iMovie to the Xsan - then shortly after that the g5's decided to choke on a title render in iDVD. No changes what-so-ever were made to any of the systems, configurations, permissions, settings you name it, one day things are fine and the next yikes! Now I know there have been problems with iMovie writing to remote disk (for instance with the fast/slow/reverse effect which just never did work on the Xsan being a remote disk.) I've worked around it in past this one is rather enormous though - I can only import and export video to the XSan right now. Anything else seems to lead my machines into a full crash, and to make matters worse I've got kids lined up around the block wanting to get in to spruce up their videos right now. We've done a defrag of the XSan and that didn't help, does anyone have any suggestions of advice, it's important that iMovie function with our XSan, since that was why it was purchased initially. Thanks.

So, you're re-sharing the Xsan volume to a bunch of workstations using AFP, or are all these direct attached?
Did the G4/G5 workstations get updated to a newer OS without you knowing? Or a new version of QuickTime?
Do you have a metadata controller and a backup? Try failing the master for the backup.
You could always unmount the volume from all clients, stop the volume and run cvfsk.

  • Low Network Utilization in Remote Disk Backup via SAP FTP

    Hi gurus,
I'm running whole online backup + redo log to backup my SAP server to backup server via SAPFTP (remote disk backup).
I'm using 100Mbps network connection between the two servers, with SAP server configured to 'maximize data throughput for network application'.
When I copy data from SAP Server to backup server manually, the speed is OK (around 98% network utilization).
But when I use put command in program RSFTP002 (SAPFTP) for the same file, the network utilization is just around 10%.
I use Windows Server 2003 x64 for SAP Server, and Windows Server 2008 x64 for Backup Server.
Each has adequate RAM, 8GB for SAP Server and 4GB for Backup Server.
Is this technical problem or is it because backup is considered background process, thus lowering its speed?
Help will be very much appreciated.

it's old but should help you nonetheless.
I would not use SAPFTP as you found out, it is slow.
use DD instead which is much faster.

  • Using the Remote Disk the first time - didn't work!

I wanted to install SL on my MBA using the Remote Disk feature, went through all the steps on my iMac where the SL disk was loaded, and all the steps on the MBA.
Everything was going fine until I was asked, on the MBA, to give the password of the network I wanted to join. Well no dice! It just refused it. I tried it numerous times but it kept on refusing it. The password was of course always the correct one.
Anybody know what could be going on? Thanks!

Turning off security on the router did the trick. Thanks!
What I'm now wondering is why Apple, unfortunately did not address this in the instructions of "To use Remote Install Mac OS X" page 46 of the User's Guide:
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/enUS/MacBook_Air_Late2008UserGuide.pdf
Would've saved a lot of people a lot of problems!

  • MBA won't reboot from remote disk to reach Disk Utility and repair the disk

After a routine disk repair session, it advised me that I need to repair the disk on my MBA. A few months ago it was the same, and I did it quite successfully without any problems, according to instructions: inserted the MacOS 10.6 DVD into the iMac optical drive, launched Remote Install OS, and so on. However, now my MacBook Air refuses to boot from the remote disk, so that I can reach the Disk Utility and proceed to repair disk. It sees the remote DVD Installer disk, I connect to my home WiFi, and I choose reboot from the Install DVD disk. An Apple logo appears on a grey screen with a small globe spinning below, but after a some lengthy minutes it always reboots normally!!! It seems I tried everything many times to no avail.
    Any solutions???

Nope. Waiting for 10.6.4 update, which is hopefully next week and may change the situation for better.

  • Remote disk and time machine?

i have my external hard drive attached to my airport extreme and all my computers, mac and windows, play nice and can copy files to and from it but i have partitioned the hard drive to allow for space for time machine to work but time machine wont find it or if it does refuses to use it as a disk. does time machine work with remote disks?

    heay,
I had the same issue with an exteral 250Gb USD WD disk....
I found the solution to my issue in the following manner.
    1) the disk/partition must be formated "OS X extended" format.
    2) you should be able to use you the Disk/Partition with TM while connected directly to the MAC. (this is just to make sure TM works fine.
    3) connect the disk to the airport extreme via USB.
    4) mount the the disk on the desktop
    5) go to TM preferences and change the backup disk to the disk/partition you just mounted.
    6) Activate the TM "status info" in the menu bar
    7) turn TM "ON" (DO NOT ATTEMPT TO RUN TM, or you'll have to do the entire procedure from scratch)
    8) close the TM preferences.
    9) unmount the disk from your desktop (use the the eject button on the shared devices tap in the finder)
    10) restart the MAC (you don't need to do this... but this is just to make sure that the disk is unmounted completely)
    11) once the boot-up is completed, go to the TM status icon and choose "backup now"
You must make sure that the disk and or partitions you want to use with TM are never mounted before or during the TM process.
As long as the disk/partition is mounted TM will not function.
if you need to use the disk for other purposes than TM wait until TM has done its first run... then you can mount and unmount freely... TM is very sensitive to this "mount" issue.
Note that sometimes TM will fail to funtion... this is not a big problem...
you just need to make sure the disk/partition is unmounted and then run the TM back from the menu bar.
Also note that your first backup will most likely take a very very very very very long time to be completed. just leave the MAC on a make sure it does not fall sleep.
try the above and the let me know if it works or not...

  • Remote disk doesn't appear in my finder.  also cd sharing option does not appear under preferences

remote disk doesn't appear in my finder.  also cd sharing option does not appear under preferences

Hi i also had a recent problem with a stuck cd in my 12" powerbook slot loading drive. I would suggest attempting all the operating system problem solvers first that are covered in other discussions on this site, such as holding down alt + command(apple logo thingy) + F + O straight away when starting up your computer. This brings you to the open firmware where you type "eject cd."
My problem seemed more physical than a glitch in the operating system The CD would try to eject several times each time failing with a horrid grinding unhealthy sound as if something was blocking it. After a while the computer seemed to disable the act of even trying to eject the disc and the cd would not be recognize on my desktop or anywhere else.
After days of suffering and failed attempts I managed to get the disc out by getting another cd that was not important, and placing it in the mouth of the slot loading drive and carefully bending the cd gently in a wrist swiveling manor so that the slot got pushed wider. This sounds foolish behavior I know, but cds have a nice flex to them which softens contact with the soft aluminum metal. After a slight widening I tried ejecting once more and it thankfully worked. The disc that came out was incredibly scratched so I came to conclusion that the drive had been squashed a little bit down the line.
Any way hope this works and sorry about the essay.
    Pete

  • Time Machine restore issue - 'connect to remote disk' greyed out

I'm having trouble restoring my MacBook Pro from a time machine backup on a Buffalo network drive.
I boot up my MacBook Pro from the original Mac OS X Install DVD that came with the machine.  Using the Disk Utility the MBP hard drive has been re-formatted.  I then select 'restore' from a time machine back up copy from the utilities menu.  However, as soon as I get to the screen 'searching for time machine backups' I cannot proceed any further as the 'connect to remote disk' button is greyed out so I cannot select the network drive.
I have restored the machine several times before from the network drive and its always worked fine.  I just cannot figure out at all what is going wrong this time and why the 'connect to remote disk' button is greyed out.  Nothing has changed from a previous restore I performed a week or so ago.  The network drive is up and running fine (not that that is particularly relevant as I can't even get to the stage of actually searching for the network drive).
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

It sounds like something in your installation of OSX was corrupted, and got backed-up. So when you restore, you're restoring the problem.
Your best bet is probably to do an +Erase and Install+ of Leopard, then use +Setup Assistant+ when your Mac restarts to transfer all your users, data, apps, and settings from the backups. See #19 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
Then download and install the "combo" update, to get back to 10.5.8. Info and download available at: http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate Be sure to do a +Repair Permissions+ via Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder) afterwards.

  • RMAN backup to remote disk in Windows

    Hi,
I'm running Oracle 9.2.0.1 with Windows Server 2003 in both Server A and Server B. My prime DB is stored in Server A meanwhile my RMAN Catalog is in Server B. I’m running RMAN to do backup of the DB in Server A which is running out of space. So, I have decided to store my backupsets to Server B since I do have few hundred Gs there. Overall, I will push the backup script from RMAN Catalog in Server B and will store the backupsets back to Server B.
My problem is whenever I run the script, no matter either from Server A or Server B, I’m getting the following error. Attached together is the RMAN configuration parameters.

I can manually run the path '\\ServerB\f$\drdb\backupset\’ from Server A and able to create/modify/delete a file inside this folder. But I don’t understand why getting the ‘Access denied’ error? Anyway, is this a correct way to do backup into remote disk? I’m quite new to Oracle and just attended RMAN course with OU. I have Google-ed this problem but none can assist me. Please do help me or share your knowledge to resolve this problem.
    Thanks & regards,
    Nesan

    Hi Andre,
Yes you're correct, it's because of the Oracle service which run under Local System Account. I have went to it's properties and changed the logon details to my own Login ID which is Administrator for both Server A and B. Now my remote backup is working great...
But does this changes will affect other apps/jobs/results in Oracle?
    Guys,
If you have any better idea to solve this issue please drop into this thread or let me know if you find anything wrong on my solution.
Thanks a lot for Andre.... You have solved my 2 weeks problem.
    Regards,

    Hi community.
My configuration: MBA 13" (late 2010) and a Win7 computer with a DVD drive. Done everything as described in this note: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1777
On MBA, I see the entry "Remote disk" on the sidebar, i see my Win7 PC in the list.
But when I expand it, the contents are empty (a dvd is inside and I can see it both by file sharing and by RDP on Windows)

  • Optical Drive gone on MacBook Trying To Install using Remote Disk

I've followed the instructions on using Remote Disk to reinstall my MacBook system software but the MacBook does not see the Remote Disk from my MacBook Pro. They are both on the same network and I've followed the instructions but when I hold down the Option key on my MacBook it only sees the MacBook hard drive - not the remote disk from the MacBook Pro. Is there another work around or a way to reinstall the operating system and updates using Firewire?

Start up the MacBook Pro with your install disk.
After you get to the install screen on the MacBook Pro connect the MacBook to the MacBook Pro in "Target Mode"with a firewire cable http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
Then open "Disk Utility" from the install disk on the MacBook Pro. You should see both the MacBook and the MacBook Pro hard drives in there. Erase and partition the MacBook drive and then choose that drive when you go back to the install screen.

  • Remote Disk Not Working

I have a Mac Air and an iMac, both running 10.5.8 and both on the same wireless network using an airport extreme router. I get connected fine when I access remote disk on the Mac Air, but the CD/DVD icon never appears on the Mac Air desktop (it does appear on the iMac desktop) and so I cannot access the software on the Mac Air. Any help greatly appreciated. Bob
Of note - this has worked for me in the past (year ago or so).

Well besides DVD Studio Pro being very non-intuitive, it came down to O.E., operator error. It's always the one program I dread working with because there are 500 settings that must be exactly so or nothing works. The rest of Final Cut Studio I can figure out and have even taken the certification courses for FCS and Motion. But DVD Studio Pro can sense fear and laughs at me. I don't like that.
Larry Jordan, via Lynda.com, gave a wealth of information and I just started following his lead and voila!, everything worked. It was a confluence of things and I'd be at a loss as to tell you what the one thing that made it all work. Little things that I had no clue, such as titles of DVDs must be less than 11 characters long. Oh, don't use any spaces either.

  • Remote Disk Backup

    Hi gurus,
I want to ask some questions again..
I want to backup my SAP database to remote disk.
    My server is using:
    OS : Windows Server 2003 Enterprise 64bit
    DB : Oracle 10.2.0.4
    As i've read here: http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nwmobile71/helpdata/en/47/0b9ed8434f57dde10000000a1553f7/content.htm
my only option for windows user is use backup_dev_type = ftp right?
so I have configured all things according to what's in the article above.
i've mapped the disk storage location into drive z: in my SAP Server.
When i execute backup, SAP returns error saying that z: is unknown location.
I use windows ftp server which is in IIS component.
When i see the picture from that article above, it uses SAPFTP.
Do I must use SAPFTP to backup to remote disk?
If so, how could I configure it?
I have tried to open SAPFTP in 'TCP/IP Connections' via tcode 'SM59' and 'Test Connection', which returned something like:
    Logon:                    569  msec
      0  KB:                    1  msec
    10  KB:                    4  msec
