Problem: securely erasing home folder after enabling file vault

I enabled file vault. It took 4 days (125 GB) to "securely erase home folder", then when it finally reached 100% I got an error message that it could not be erased after all. I also now got an icon on the desktop (protected house) showing my home folder. Anybody experience with this? What do I do to securely erase? What can I do to speed it up? I have 4GB RAM and a HD of 500GB

open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app
At the prompt type:
diskutil secureErase freespace 0 /
(press return)
This will secure erase free space on your boot volume.
Level "0" (zero) is a Single-pass zero-fill erase. Levels 0 through 4 are supported.
Here is a full description of the different erase levels: 0 - Single-pass zero-fill erase.
A. 1 - Single-pass random-fill erase.
B. 2 - US DoD 7-pass secure erase.
C. 3 - Gutmann algorithm 35-pass secure erase.
D. 4 - US DoE algorithm 3-pass secure erase.
for more info (in Terminal) type:
man diskutil
(press return)
This should take considerably less time than 4 days. On my Mac Pro with 162GB boot volume,
130GB free (I keep my data on a different volume) it takes about 10 minutes using level "0".
Disk Free Space Warnings are normal during operation and can be ignored.
more info about it from apple support:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24002
You can invoke the erase procedure from Disk Utility GUI interface, but it usually is quicker
when run from terminal.

  • Time machine deleted applications folder after restoring files

my macbook 13 inch black would not start up. grey progress bar then would shutdown.
Used time machine to restore my files. Time machine has deleted my applications folder after restoring files. how do I get them back.

Depending on how you restored your data, Time Machine may not recognize your previous backups as belonging to the same machine. It will then delete as many snapshots as necessary to make room for a full backup of all files. Once the snapshots are deleted, they can't be recovered.
Another time, when you erase the boot volume, restore from Time Machine in Setup Assistant so that your backup history will be preserved.
As this experience shows, you need more than one backup to be safe. I suggest you start a new backup set on another, larger, external drive.

  • My 5 year old MacBook Air is telling me it "cannot save information about your mailboxes because there isn't enough space in your home folder.  Quit mail, delete files you don't need, then reopen mail."  What is "home folder," and which files to delete?

The home folder is where all of your personal files are kept.
Best candidates to delete are movies, videos, music and photos since they generally take the most space.
Don't forget to empry the Trash after you delete the file because the space is not returned until the Trash is emptied.

  • Enabling File Vault

Wow it looks like I avoided a lot of trouble with the File Vault Death problem by just doing an erase and install. However, I'm trying to enable File Vault on my newly created user account and I keep getting an error message saying that I cannot enable it because the "home folder" is not an Mac OS Extended format volume.
Now I know that's false since I made sure that the hard drive was reformatted to an Extended format volume when I installed. Anyone else having this problem? If so, has anyone figured out a solution? My only one would be to reinstall Leopard again, but I really do not want to have to do that if I can avoid it.

Could it be possible, that the GUID filesystem is responsible for this misbehaviour? I think, before I've changed the HDD in my MacBook Pro the original Apple HDD had an Apple filesystem and it was possible to enable FileVault. Now I have built in an Western Digital WDC WD2500BEVS-00UST0 and it isn't possible.
    HTH and kind regards, Friedrich

  • Can't enable File Vault 2 in Lion on Mac Pro

Going insane trying to get file vault 2 enabled on my mac pro.
It's an older octocore mac pro (2x2.8 GHz Xenon) with 10 GB RAM. I have a 2 tb startup disk, another 2tb disk, and a pair of 1.5TB disks that form a mirrored RAID.
i tried enabling file vault on one of the startup disks and it would enable then restart, and i would get to the login screen after the restart and the keyboard would be frozen (usb) and so would the mouse. i started going nuts and tried to boot into recovery mode but i would hold down my keys and would be greeted with (after the initial grey startup screen) a white screen for a second, and then it would just boot up normally.
    ok...
repaired permissions and verified disk, said it needed repair. coudln't figure out how to get it fixed because the stupid computer won't boot in recovery mode. made a recovery usb disk and it still wouldn't boot in recovery mode even with the stick.
started it as a targeted disk and ran disk util from my laptop. coudln't repair it, siad the disk was corrupted and needed to be formatted.
    SO.
formatted the OTHER startup disk, extended/journaled, and installed lion on it cleanly using my usb installer. figured i'd turn on file vault on the brand new untouched install and then run migration assistant.
guess what: when i restarted it, i still got the login screen without the ability to use the mouse or keyboard.
pushed the power button, turned it back on, and it ignored all my attempts to get into recovery mode and continued to boot up normally.
what's going on?!!? pulling my hair out...!! any thoguhts are much appreciated!

It seems your hard disk is damaged from time to time this give tremandous problems even before booted as the Mac wants to read stuff he can't...

  • Login screen on MacBook Pro Retina (Late 2013) with enabled File Vault is extremely slow (suttering)

    Hi
I have a MacBook Pro Retina (Late 2013) with enabled File Vault on OS X Mavericks. When I boot up the mac freshly it takes quite long to get to the initial login screen (which as I understand is a pre-boot login provided by the recovery partition if File Vault is enabled). However, what is even more bothering me is that once I get to this screen, the whole UI is behaving extremely slow. The mouse makes jumps of a few inches on the screen and the animations (e.g. if you click a user and then an animation shows the password entry field) are running in slow motion and only update every few seconds. Typing the password afterwards runs smothly again (altought for example moving the mouse at this point still behaves as described before). After loggin in to the account OS X runs fine without any hicks. Can anyone give me a hit what this could be and how I could resolve this?
    This has already been done:
    Reset PRAM
Boot into recovery partition and run repaired disk and disk permissions
Run all OS X maintenance operations and cleared caches using OnyX
What I could imagine is that somehow the recovery partition is damaged (which as I understand is used to boot to the login screen if File Vault is enabled).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Chris

Just ordered a Retina MacBook Pro11,2 (mid-2014 15", 2.2GHz Intel Core i7, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, OSX 10.9.4 Pre-installed - Build 13E28)  and have the exact same issue.  The first thing I did when i booted it for the first time was enable FileValut2 and encrypt the disk.  Though I failed to notice this behavior prior to encrypting the disk, the stuttering/lag happens without fail every time I have logged in from a cold boot, locked screen or sleep. Additionally I have noticed the same stuttering behavior when switching tabs on various built-in OSX applications such as the tabs on the About This Mac > More Info.... (System Information) dialog for example, and similarly other dialogs that experience this behavior of resizing when switching tabs. I was running no other software than About This Mac > More Info ... (System Information) and OSX 10.9.4 itself.  The issue happens without fail with and without a USB mouse plugged in.
I am really glad to have found this thread and with such recent posts.  I'd love to find out that this is just a software bug that will be fixed when OSX 10.10 "Yosemite" is released.  If not, I hope the cause of this bug is determined soon so I can still exchange or have it repaired.
Migflono and Matthew, would you be able to post your hardware specs for comparison?

  • OIM 11g R2: Insufficent Privileges after Enable Database Vault

    Hi,
i am trying to implement database vault on oim 11g r2 database for a customer proof of concept, but after enable database vault i am got the following error
oracle.iam.ui.platform.exception.OIMRuntimeException: IAM-7130125 : Search token caused Oracle text DRG issue, DB exception is :ORA-20000: Oracle Text error:

    ORA-06512: at line 1
this error occurs when i run Catalog Synchronization Job and i when try to search items in catalog
i guess that database vault blocked the ctxapp role granted to oim database owner, but i am not sure how to fix it. Do i have to create a database realm for oim database user?

As I continue to forage around looking for an answer, I came across the following statement in a document on Metalink: "The home where you plan to install ODV must already have OLS installed at the same patch level as the database.". Is this correct? I have never seen this in any Database Vault documentation.

  • Is it possible to recover a folder ropped into 'File Vault' user?

    Hello all,
I dropped a folder directly from one user folder into another user folder that is 'file-vaulted'. Yes, I did get a warning that it might not work, but no I didn't listen. The folder seems to have disappeared completely. It doesn't show up in Finder searches. My question: is there any way I might be able to recover it?
    Thanks!

  • How to replace home folder after yosemite erase-reinstall?

Hi, I did an erase-reinstall and then simply copied my backed-up home folder (administrator's home folder) back into the new home folder but this has not worked well. Can anyone tell me the correct procedure of how to restore the home folder. I have a Time Machine back-up from a previous online Yosemite install (not an erase-install) as well as a regular back-up on a separate drive. Can I fix this up (i.e. remove the whole current home folder and replace it properly) without doing another erase-install of yosemite? Many thanks, Barak

baltwo, out of interest, I just found this at:  http://www.theinstructional.com/guides/how-to-re-run-the-os-x-setup-assistant
How to Re-Run the OS X Setup Assistant
Under certain circumstances, it can be advantageous to re-run the Setup Assistant. Using some command-line trickery, we can do just this without having to erase and reinstall OS X...
    Option?

  • Can't create new folder in home folder when saving files

In gnome, when I want to save any file in my home folder, and I want to create a new folder in my own home. The new folder appeares for several minutes and then disappears.
If I create new folder in other directory. There is no such problem.
Also I can create new folder in my own home directory in nautilus or by mkdir.
    any one can help me.....
    Thanks very much....

I think either way should work OK - it's less of a security risk to use a standard account for "everything", including web browsing, but I confess I don't myself do this. You would again have to authenticate with an admin username/password if you do download and install from the standard account.
Whichever way you do it, this article may be relevant:
*About file quarantine in Mac OS X v10.5 and v10.6*
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3662
    It includes the following:
If you have multiple user accounts on your Mac, the user account that downloaded the file is the only user account that can remove the quarantine attribute to the file. All other user accounts can open the quarantine file, but they will be presented with the quarantine dialog box asking "Are you sure you want to open it?" every time they open the file.

  • Restoring previous home folder after turning off FileVault

    HI Folks,
I turned FileVault on a long time ago and because of its size didn't turn it off before upgrading to Leopard. After the upgrade, it became obvious that FileVault had to go--it was occupying essentially the whole hard drive and spotlight didn't work. I searched out some instructions on how to work around FV to make space and found this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1974?viewlocale=en_US.
I followed the instructions to the letter except when I got the part where it says "Copy files from the disk image to your new account," I ran into trouble. Thinking it wasn't that big a deal, telling myself I could solve the issue later, I proceeded to nuke enough files in my original user account to give FV the room it needed to turn off. This included (stupid me) my LIbrary folder. When enough space was created, FV turned off and spotlight now works fine.
I won the battle but lost the war... That's because in Leopard, unlike Tiger (for which the instructions were written), you can't simply "Highlight all items in the sparse disk image and drag them into your new account's home folder." Not allowed.
I have everything safely stored on my handy external drive but other than transferring folder by folder, is there any other way to restore my home folder? Is there some super-secret workaround or is this the cautionary tale to all you other folks out there (like we need to hear it again): don't get impatient and pay attention to which operating system the instructions were written for. Tiger's troubleshooting articles are not interchangeable with Leopard's.
Hope I am saving someone else some grief by airing my tale of woe.
    Best wishes,
    T

    Hi VK
Following the instructions in the link, I made a sparse disk image on an external drive and selected all items in my Home and copied them (by dragging) to the mounted sparse disk image.

  • Importing Home Folder after new hard drive and Lion Update

    (Okay, long title.)
Had to replace my hard drive. Was running Tiger.
Backed up my entire Home Folder only, on an external harddrive, before it failed completely.
Hard drive replaced, and then loaded Snow Leopard, updated to latest version, 10.6.8.
    Ready now to get Lion.
    Questions:
    - After I install Lion do I simply use the "Transfer Information to This Mac" feature to bring in my Home folder?
    - What about the apps that are duplicated, such as Mail, Safari, iCal, etc. Will that be taken care of on its own?
    - What about the iLife apps, GarageBand, iPhoto, etc.? Will I be able to update those to the latest versions?
    Thank you.

If the username and password combo is identical, then you'll need to unhide the new hidden user's Library folder, then open both home folders and transfer you're stuff. Do note that you might get you can't do that messages. For those items, move the new ones into a newly created Desktop folder, and then you should be able to copy the Tiger ones. Once done, restart so the copied stuff is put into RAM and is available for your other steps, such as reinstalling the apps.

  • Yosemite install has messed up my home folder after fixing user short name.

I just installed Yosemite 10.10.2 onto a new Mac Pro, replacing 10.9.5.  After the installation completed, I allow my iCloud settings the set things up for Mail and my other general account settings.  The only issue is that when I changed my short name from timjones to tjones, auto correct changed it to tones (as it has done in this post 2 times).  Once I recognized this, I used the normal method for modifying a user account by logging in under another admin account, using ditto to copy the '/Users/tones' folder to '/Users/tjones', selecting the Tim Jones account in Users and Groups and using the Advanced Options to reset the short name to tjones.  I then reassigned the home folder to /Users/tjones.
All seemed to go well and when I logged back in as tjones.  However, I could no longer set up my preferences for apps nor could I access my mail.  I then clicked on the 'tjones' home folder in Finder and was greeted with a dialog that said 'Preparing to duplicate items to "Users"'.  It then spun for around 2 minutes and prompted me for my password.  I entered it and the dialog changed to 'Duplicating 0 items to "Users"' and it's now been spinning for around 15 minutes.
What is this and am I back at square one and reinstalling (I have good backups...)?

The "Duplication" finished finally and my home folder has now disappeared from the /Users folder in Finder.  If I check in a Terminal, there are now 2 folders - 'tjones' which is set to tjones:wheel and 'tjones copy' which is set to tjones:admin.  As mentioned, neither is visible in Finder.
