Problem testing XSQL Servlet, XSQL-0007

Hi,
I'm testing the XSQL Servlet, as a lot of people do. I installed
it on Apache Web Server with JRUN servlet engine, following the
Release Notes, but it does not work at all. I get the following
message, when I try to run helloworld.xslq:
Oracle XSQL Servlet Error
XSQL-0007: XML Parsing error on requested page
<2,1>: Expected EOF
I checked it several times but it seems to be right, exactly as
in the release notes.
I read here that other people (SHankar) had the same problem, but
your answer did not solve it:

I'm requesting the page that you provide as a demo:
helloworld.xsql
I checked it and it is a well-formed XML document.
Anyway, other examples that you provide with the xsqlservlet zip
file don't work either.

• Character problems with xsql:include-xsql reparse="yes"

I have a problem retrieving XML-fragments from CLOB columns.
Danish ISO-8859-1 characters (aelig, oslash, aring) are returned as "?" from Apache/Jserv when using xsql:include-xsql reparse="yes".
My platform is Solaris9/Oracle-9.2.0.2/XDK-9.2.0.4.
Database characterset is we8iso8859p1.
I'm using the Apache/Jserv that comes with Oracle 9.2.0.1.
Steps to reproduce problem:
-- Table data:
create table tab1 (id number,clob_col clob);
insert into tab1 values(1, '<x>fxe</x>');
/*inserted characters are aelig(230), oslash(248), aring(229)*/

</testdata>

</xsl:template>
</xsl:stylesheet>
-- Notes:
Running test.xsql works fine with XSQL command-line, but FAILS through Apache/Jserv (danish characters are returned as "?").
inc.xsql works fine through XSQL command-line and Apache/Jserv, problem only happens with xsql:include-xsql reparse="yes" (e.g. test.xsql).
xsql:include-xml works fine, but I cannot use this, bca. in my real business case I'm selecting more than one row from the database.
I've checked and double-checked my jserv.properties several times, and believes it to be correct.
The xsql:include-xsql reparse="yes" technique works fine in our Solaris9/Oracle-8.1.7/iAS-1.0.2.2 environment.
Any suggestions ?
-- Peter ([email protected])

If I put the following line in jserv.properties:
wrapper.env=LANG=en_US.ISO8859-1
the problem with xsql:include-xsql reparse="yes" seems to go away.
Really strange, since Oracle products in my experience normally only uses NLS_LANG, not LANG.
Also, we're accessing several databases with different charactersets from the same ApacheJserv installation, so I don't understand why LANG (or NLS_LANG) should be set to a particular value.
Can anybody explain ?

• If there is a problem starting a servlet....

I'm currently writting an exception handler for my servlet's init() method.
My question is, if there is a problem initialising the servlet (i.e. config files won't load etc) what's the best way to put the servlet out of action?
I'm thinking maybe call the destroy() method within the catch block of init(). Would this be right?
If so what happens if the servlet is shutdown and then there is another request? Will the container (Tomcat) attempt to start the servlet again?
Thanks,

When you say "And the container will always attempt to
start the servlet after startup." Do you mean after
shutdown?That's a strange way to say it, but I suppose you might look at it that way. The container shuts down at some point in time. It doesn't attempt to init the servlet then, but after it starts up it does attempt to init the servlet. Either immediately or upon its first use.
It seems a bit strange for the container to keep
restarting a servlet that will always fail on init().How should the container know that? It cannot make any assumptions about what init() might do the next time. Perhaps it failed because the system manager put a configuration file in the wrong place; it might be there now. Basically it's the manager's problem if the servlet init() fails every time, not the container's.
Oh and I don't suppose there is a class constuctor
exception is there, for when a constructor fails?Constructors can throw exceptions if they are designed to do so.

• Problem in running Servlet

Hello,
I am new to Java. I worked on Dot Net for 1 year and migrated to Java. I am facing an error while running my first servlet using tomcat-jwsdp-1.4.
HTTP Status 404 - /servlet/ServerConfig
Description: The requested resource (/servlets-examples/servlet/ServerConfig) is not available.
First, I created a java file ServerConfig.java then compiled it by setting the classpath to servlet.jar. After that I copied the class file ServerConfig.class to
D:\tomcat\tomcat-jwsdp-1.4\webapps\ROOT\WEB-INF\classes\
Then I created an entry as,
- <servlet>
<servlet-name>ServerConfig</servlet-name>
<servlet-class>ServerConfig</servlet-class>
</servlet>
in the Web.xml file located at
D:\tomcat\tomcat-jwsdp-1.4\webapps\servlets-examples\WEB-INF
Then I started tomcat server and tried to access my servlet ServerConfig.class in Internet Explorer by giving the URl as,
http://localhost:8080/servlets-examples/servlet/ServerConfig.
It doesn't work.
I have set the variable JAVA_HOME to d:\jdk1.4, where my j2sdk is installed.
Can you please help me?

Firstly you should put your class in a package, then you need a servlet mapping in your web.xml, eg :
<servlet>
<servlet-name>TestServlet</servlet-name>
<servlet-class>test.TestServlet</servlet-class>
</servlet>
<servlet-mapping>
<servlet-name>TestServlet</servlet-name>
<url-pattern>/servlet/TestServlet</url-pattern>
</servlet-mapping>

• Is there any way to test a servlet without deploying it???

It is probably a stupid question, and i probably am right in assuming the answer is 'no' but i figured i'd ask anyway because i'm new to servlet writing and wanted to know if i could test my servlet before bothering to package it into a .war and putting it in a web container just to end up finding out something isn't right and having to re-package it again each time i need to change a bug.
so just a simple answer if this can't be done will do
if it can be done- a suggestion of how you do this in detail would be awesome, and might even earn ya some Dukes.

Your building an entire site and exporting it to a war file without ever testing anything? Testing your servlet can easy or hard.. depends on what classes your importing into it... and if you can simulate some sample input for it to handle.

• Problem testing feeed

Hello everyone,
I'm having problems testing my feed on iTunes, I can subscribe to it, but it doesn't download the episodes, when I try to download it gives me the following error:
"There are no playable episodes. the URL might point to text-only episodes, or contain file types that iTunes cannot play"
Which is very confusing because I followed Apple's guideliness to encode my M4V videos and I tested the feed with other validators and it passed.
My feed is at: http://blog.menstyledigest.com/feed.xml
I've looked all over for a solution to my problem but couldn't find any help so I'm hoping somebody here can help me.
Thanks in davance,
RG

The URL of the media file for each episode is carried in the 'enclosure' tag within each set of 'item' tags. Here is one of yours:

You've linked to a web page: you need to link directly to the media file itself.

• Problem with xsql:query

Hi,
I'm having a problem with the following simple XSQL document:

<xsql:query connection="xsqltest" xmlns:xsql="urn:oracle-xsql">
SELECT concat(concat(forename, ' '), surname) AS Name
, d.name AS Department
FROM emp, dept d
WHERE emp.dept_no = d.id
ORDER BY surname
</xsql:query>When I transform this using the command line xsql, it produces the following (as expected):

<ROWSET>
<ROW num="1">

<Department>Accounting</Department>
</ROW>
<ROW num="2">

<Department>Product Development</Department>
</ROW>
<ROW num="3">

<Department>Accounting</Department>
</ROW>
</ROWSET>However, when I access the same page through my browser, the output is:

<xsql:query>
SELECT concat(concat(forename, ' '), surname) AS Name
, d.name AS Department
FROM emp, dept d
WHERE emp.dept_no = d.id
ORDER BY surname
</xsql:query>(this is the same as the input document, except the namespace declaration has been stripped out, making the XML invalid).
I've tried including other xsql tags in the same document (e.g. xsql:include-xsql), these seem to work fine. Also, if I change the connect details, XSQL fails as expected, so it would appear xsql is being invoked by Tomcat (.xsql is mapped to the servlet), and XSQL successfully connecting to the database.
My setup is slightly unusual: I'm trying to use XSQL 1.0.4.1 with MySQL 3.23.32 using the mm.mysql 2.0.4 JDBC drivers. This is running on Tomcat 3.2.1 with JDK 1.3 (OJVM 1.2.330). But, since it works with the command line xsql, I'm at a loss as to why it's misbehaving through the servlet engine only... any ideas?
Steve

Hmm,
Even more confusing - the same .xsql document works fine with WebToGo - so I guess this is a Tomcat problem, somehow... Just can't understand why xsql:include-xsql works and xsql:query doesn't.
Steve

• Character Set Problem with XSQL

Hi!
I am using xsql:insert-request of the xsql-servlet. On NT everything works fine.But on Solaris I get with the same configuration (Oracle 8.1.7 XSQL-Servlet 1.0.4.0) and the same xsl and xsql Files I get the following Error:
Exception 'java.sql.SQLException:Non supported character set: oracle-character-set-46' encountered during processing ROW element 0All prior XML row changes were rolled back. in the XML document.
I want to load Data into an object-relational Table.
Has anyone of you had the same Problem? Has anybody a solution for this Problem. Today I tried different things wihtout any success.
Thanks a lot,

hi manidhar,
I am also facing the same problem.In my case the characters are getting garbled when it is passed to a javaScript function.
Did u find a solution.
If yes please post it.

• Maximum Open Cursors Exceeded problem in XSQL

Hi,
We are processing an XSQL page by calling XSQLRequest.process() programatically within our application. Within the XSQL page there are several queries which involve multiple nested CURSOR expressions... when the query returns enough rows we are running into the error "ORA-00604: error occurred at recursive SQL level 1 ORA-01000: maximum open cursors exceeded".
When searching this forum I have seen many (old) postings regarding this error and a bug in the XDK... seems like it was some time ago, but while we set about improving the structure of our XSQL page (or increasing the max open cursor init parameter currently at 500 or both) can anyone confirm that this bug no longer exists?
Also, any general suggestions on working around this limit rather than increasing it? We have considered splitting up our queries into smaller queries (and merging the results via XSLT) and closing cursors during the session explicitly by issuing commits within the XSQL page... but any better ideas?
Thanks,
Bob

I have found this max open cursors problem to be related to Statement object not being closed. This presents a problem for the use of PreparedStatements, because they are only useful if you can keep them open and resuse them. However, in doing so, each iteration through the PreparedStatement creates another open cursor in the databse rather than reusing the previous one. A work around I discovered by reading about REF CURSORS and I use in JDBC is as follows:
Assuming a previously prepared PreparedStatement pstmt and a ResultSet rset-
while (rset.next()) {
rset.close();
// This line closes the cursor in the database
// but does not require you to re-prepare the
// PreparedStatement. Don't ask me why--ask the
// Oracle API guys.
rset.getStatement().close();
// make ready for GC
rset = null;

• Problems configuring XSQL with Tomcat

Having a lot of trouble getting this to work with tomcat standalone, apache with tomcat, and even apache with resin. (I have successfully gotten this to work with resin as both web and appserver.)
I have tried to be meticulous in following the directions, but one thing that is throwing me is that I can't find the web.xml file in my xdk distribution (neither in xdk8i nor xdk9i); I've attempted to create the .xsql extension-to-servlet mapping myself in Tomcat's web.xml file, but maybe I got this wrong.
The main symptom is that my xsql pages are basically being returned to me in the browser. Any help would be appreciated.

Bacically you need to create yourself, and here is an example:

<!DOCTYPE web-app

• Query...where clause problem in XSQL

I am getting error with following simple example: (however it works fine when the < sign changed to greater than > sign). Anybody any idea?
select * from emp
where empno < 7876
XSQL-005: XSQL page is not well-formed.
XML parse error at line , char
Expected name instead of .
null

The "less-than" sign (also known as the "left-angle-bracket") is a special character in an XML file, since it is the start of an element like <foo>.
So, you either have to write your query like this:
<xsql:query>
select * from emp where empno &;lt; 7839
</xsql:query>or like this, escaping the entire query with a CDATA section:
<xsql:query>

select * from emp where empno < 7839

</xsql:query>A third option is that instead of writing:
empno < 7839
you exploit the fact that this is equivalent to:
7839 > empno
and write it that way. Since "greater-than" sign does not need to be escaped specially in an XML file, it gets the job done, too.

• Problem with a Servlet - URGENT help

Hello
i really need your help. here i uploaded my web project: http://www.2shared.com/file/4450238/aaa4d9cd/JMSTest.html
it's about 2 servlets, one Test servlet sending a message, and another one, Receiver, to receive the message sent via JMS (i use ActiveMQ)
i didn't know what's wrong, if i call http://localhost:8080/JMSTest , then i enter something into that textfield, then i press the button(form action is http://localhost:8080/test ). it writes that "Mesaj trimis" (message sent - written by me in Romanian), and when i call http://localhost:8080/receiver i did not receive the message. Why?
I use queue, so i think the send message is stored in a queue until a receiver receives it.
Please download the project, isn't complicated.

I didn't go all through your code, but I'd say you should make sure that the Receiver servlet is up and running BEFORE your access the Sender servlet.

• Problem with Sessions, Servlets, Netscape and Solaris

We are experiencing a problem that is confounding and frustrating us (I have
a felling that it is something exremely minor that we are overlooking).
Here goes:
Context:
The problem only occurs when using a netscape browser against weblogic
4.51running on our Solaris 7 box (Everything works fine through IE, and
through both browsers against our development machines which are on NT)
Problem:
We have a bunch of JSP pages and servlets that are used togehter throughout
our site. They both manage session information for the user. What is
happening is that there is no problem maintaining session information among
all the JSP pages, but when we hit a servlet that we use to stream graphs
back to the browser, it gets the session but it has no contents all of a
sudden. What seems to be even more strange is that the session is not
tagged as new (by checking isNew()), it is just empty of the contents that
were placed it by the JSP pages. Again, this is only occurring from
Netscape browsers against our Solaris server.
If anyone can provide any help it would be greatly appreciated. I can
provide more details if need be.

There is a property in the weblogic.properties file that lets you set
the cookie name. If this isn't set, the port will be appended as part of
the name. I've had a similar problem switching between http and https
and losing sessions.
