Problem with awt
Hi,
I have a problem, I learn Java and in my book I reached the section about applets. I would test the example from the book, but I have a problem. I can compile it, but if I start it in a Browser, there is only a gray rectangle and if I try to start it with the appletviewer, there comes an error.

Also, if I try to make a GUI with Swing, there comes a similar error message, but there it wasn't an applet, but a normal application.

If I view the HTML-file with the HalloWelt-Applet in the browser from my PC, then it doesn't run, but there is only a grey rectangle and on the java-console comes the message:

Problems with awt.Toolkit on Tomcat
Hello! I'm trying to get the Default Toolkit (java.awt.Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit() ) to determine the scrren size of the client, and Tomcat keeps throwing an Exception - now it's the website's Tomcat and the one on my localhost - there it worked.. Is there another way to determine the client's screen size in JSP (not JavaScript!)?? Thanx!
first, the previous poster was right - learn how these protocols are interacting before you try something like you want to do - and they're right, you can't use the AWT toolkit to find out ANYTHING about the client.
HTTP is stateless. so it's like this:
browser request -> your code on server, jsp completely exeutes, generates html -> html PLAIN old html goes to the browser. in that order. no exceptions. ergo, all your code has executed once the browser starts getting data (buffers on the server not withstanding).
As to why you're getting the exception, the server you are trying to run it on is most likely running in a mode called "headless", that is, there is no windowing api available to the JVM, so any awt calls will fail anyway. It works on your box because you are probably running a full windowing os, such as windows or Linux with gnome or kde. it just happens to return the correct screen size because that's the screen size of your screen, not the screen of the browser that it's outputting to. (try running your code locally and making your browser window small, you'll be dismayed that the rendered HTML is not the "right" size - because the screen size call was based on your resolution, NOT the size of the requesting browser window.

}can somebody help meIt is indeed a bug. Once your List has data in it, the getPreferredSize method starts calling preferredSize(int rows) method. This method in turn asks the list's peer for the size. The result is that the preferred size you set is completely ignored (hence a bug). Quick fix would be to override the getPreferredSize method like so.

}The list is not 200 pixels high, but this just comes from the fact that you don't have a BorderLayout.NORTH or BorderLayout.SOUTH object yet, so the BorderLayout is alowed to extend the height of the list.
And you seem to havea pretty exact idea on the size you want your components to be. If the frame is not going to be resizable, then you can use no layout manager if you want. This would require you to set the exact bounds of every component you add to the frame. -
Repaint problems with an applet under Netscape 4.75
Hello,
I'm currently working on an applet created with VisualAge for Java, running under the standard Netscape 4.75 JVM, with Windows NT4.
I am experiencing problems with AWT components which randomly disappear, especially Labels and sometimes Panels. When I drag a window over the missing label and then drag it back, the label appears.
I have tried a lot of combinations with the repaint(), paint(), paintAll() and paintComponents() methods, but it has not been efficient for the moment. Introducing lots of repaint() calls on the concerned labels is even worse.
Is there a known bug in the Netscape 4.75 JVM concerning this problem ? Do you have an idea of what can be done to solve this problem ? Changing the JVM is not an option that can be chosen. Netscape 4.75 has been defined as the only browser for the whole project.

KevinWell, I finally solved this problem.
For your information, the JVM included in Netscape 4.75 running under NT4 does not like having AWT labels with either Background or Foreground not initialised. If any of these 2 properties is not defined, it could sometimes occur that the JVM can't display the label. -
Problem with java.awt.MouseInfo or java.awt.event.*;
I have a problem with the MouseInfo class. I think.. because in my mousePressed(MouseEvent event) method, I have this:

Problem with Threads and a static variable
I have a problem with the code below. I am yet to make sure that I understand the problem. Correct me if I am wrong please.
Code functionality:
A timer calls SetState every second. It sets the state and sets boolean variable "changed" to true. Then notifies a main process thread to check if the state changed to send a message.
The problem as far I understand is:
Assume the timer Thread calls SetState twice before the main process Thread runs. As a result, "changed" is set to true twice. However, since the main process is blocked twice during the two calls to SetState, when it runs it would have the two SetState timer threads blocked on its synchronized body. It will pass the first one, send the message and set "changed" to false since it was true. Now, it will pass the second thread, but here is the problem, "changed" is already set to false. As a result, it won't send the message even though it is supposed to.
Would you please let me know if my understanding is correct? If so, what would you propose to resolve the problem? Should I call wait some other or should I notify in a different way?

It is not easy to make them alternate since SetState() could be called from different places where the state could be anything else but a status message. Like a GREETING message for example. It is a handshaking message but not a status message.
Again as you said, There is a reason I can't call sendMessage() inside setState().
The only way I was able to do it is by having a counter of the number of notifies that have been called. Every time notify() is called a counter is incremented. Now instead of just checking if "changed" flag is true, I also check if notify counter is greater than zero. If both true, I send the message. If "changed" flag is false, I check again if the notify counter is greater than zero, I send the message. This way it works, but it is kind of a patch than a good design fix. I am yet to find a good solution.

Problem with JFrame and busy/wait Cursor
Hi -- I'm trying to set a JFrame's cursor to be the busy cursor,
for the duration of some operation (usually just a few seconds).
I can get it to work in some situations, but not others.
Timing does seem to be an issue.
There are thousands of posts on the BugParade, but
in general Sun indicates this is not a bug. I just need
a work-around.
I've written a test program below to demonstrate the problem.
I have the problem on Solaris, running with both J2SE 1.3 and 1.4.
I have not tested on Windows yet.
When you run the following code, three JFrames will be opened,
each with the same 5 buttons. The first "F1" listens to its own
buttons, and works fine. The other two (F2 and F3) listen
to each other's buttons.
The "BUSY" button simply sets the cursor on its listener
to the busy cursor. The "DONE" button sets it to the
default cursor. These work fine.
The "SLEEP" button sets the cursor, sleeps for 3 seconds,
and sets it back. This does not work.
The "INVOKE LATER" button does the same thing,
except is uses invokeLater to sleep and set the
cursor back. This also does not work.
The "DELAY" button sleeps for 3 seconds (giving you
time to move the mouse into the other (listerner's)
window, and then it behaves just like the "SLEEP"
button. This works.
Any ideas would be appreciated, thanks.

user603943I think the installation of planning on Vista is difficult. As some of the files doesn't support even i am tired of doing that.
But tell me one thing have you installed all other products , I mean Essbase, (server, client) , AAS and Shared services.
Are they working good .
I have formatted my system to XP and installed everything , but the problem is when i install planning it prompts me that IIS 5 should be greater other wise EPM will not install...
there are lot of things with planning 1) i can't datasource as it is not highlighting when we configure with Shared services
2) It does not create product instance .
If any one can fix this thing by giving me a suggestions.

Advance level drawing problem with Jframe and JPanel need optimize sol?
Dear Experts,
I m trying to create a GUI for puzzle game following some kind of "game GUI template", but i have problems in that,so i tried to implement that in various ways after looking on internet and discussions about drawing gui in swing, but i have problem with both of these, may be i m doing some silly mistake, which is still out of my consideration. please have a look at these two and recommend me one of them, which is running without problems (flickring and when you enlarge window the board draw copies (tiled) everywhere,
Note: i don't want to inherit jpanel or Jframe

Design problem with JScrollPane
First, I have problems with english. I hope u understand without problems that Im trying to say here. Sorry about that.
Mi problem is whit a JScrollPane. I want to put an image whit a predefined size for draw inside it. I dont have any information about it, just the size. I want to put it in a JPane. The best choice is use the JPane area. The problem is that I want to use a JScrollPane because the image is bigger that the visualization area.
Im unable to put a Canvas in the ScrollPane, or a JPane whit a predefined size or an image whit a predefined size. Im sure that is a design problem. Somebody can tell me something I can start whit? What do u think is better choice to put inside a JScrollPane?
I dont send any source code because I dont have anything else that is show in the example.

Problem with writing and reading using serialization
I am having a problem with writing and reading an object that has another object in it. The purpose of the class is to write a order that has multiple items in it. And there will be several orders. This is for an IB project, where one of the requirements is to utilize a hierarchical composite data structure. That is, it is "one that contains more than one element and at least one of the elements is a composite data structure. Examples are, an array or linked list of records, a record that has one field that is another record, or an array". The code is shown below:

Kilik07ok i got reading to work to a certain extent... but the prob is i cnt seem to save my innerCustOrdObj proprly...when ever i look for a record using the gotorecordbtn, the outerobject, which is the orderDetails, seems to change but the innerCustOrdObj remains the same... heres the new code..

Problem with JPanel.updateUI()
Hello,
i have a problem with updateUI(), here's a simple example what's wrong. just compile and run the following piece of code and look what happens after 2 seconds: the left panel will be decrease its width after calling updateUI(), but why? is it a bug of updateUI() or is it my fault?

rarely a case when you need to call updateUI().
Why do you call updateUI() if you remove the call to updateUI()
everything will work OK.

Focus Problem with JTree and Menus
Hi all,
I have a problem with focus when editing a JTree and selecting a menu. The problem occurs when the user single clicks on a node, invoking the countdown to edit. If the user quickly clicks on a menu item, the focus will go to the menu item, but then when the countdown finishes, the node now has keyboard focus.
Below is code to reproduce the problem. Click on the node, hover for a little bit, then quickly click on the menu item.
How would I go about fixing the problem? Thanks!
