Problem with Pacman 4

Alright, I just built a new computer and installed the core version of Arch on it from a freshly burned CD. When I ran pacman -Syyu, I had to upgrade pacman. I did so without errors. However, when I do the same command afterwards I get this output:
error: failed retrieving file 'core.db' from mirrors.kernel.org : connection time-out
Everything else updates just fine. I have tried every US server and I get the same error for all of them.

Guessing its this bug.

  • Problems with pacman applet, and advice on a gaming portfolio

    Hi
I recently made a pacman applet, im having a few problems with it though, the first time the applet is run on a browser, the ghosts(represented by squares) often dont appear or if they do, they are stuck in walls, this never happens when i run offline on my computer. Is this because the very first time the applet is run, it doesnt load properly, but the second time some of the files are in the cache so it loads fully?
Also everytime i refresh the browser the applet dissapears and is replaced with a blank space and a cross in the top left hand corner, does anyone know the reason for this?
The applet can be found below, if you do decide to play it, please bear in mind what i have said, so it might not load correctly the first time, if this is the case please refresh, or close the broswer and reopen the link! Also you will need to click the applet for it to gain focus before you can move pacman - use the arrow keys the control pacman.

Id also be very gratful for some advice - id like a change in career, ive always wanted to get into gaming, ive had some previous knowledge in java i made a programme that could generate its own poetry in java for my dissatation, but i still never had a huge amount of confidence, and so went into websites.
BUT now i have decided to take the leap back into programming and give it a go, which is why ive made this game.
I thought id make a portfolio and try and apply for a few gaming jobs. This applet took me two weeks to make and it was in my spare time, i am fully aware its not perfect, and it doesnt look great, but i would like to know what people think of it, also how many more games do you think i should make, before i apply for gaming jobs? Does anyone have any advice on what would make a good portfolio for a java gaming job?
Thanks alot, i look forward to what you think of the game, and your advice!

Thanks for getting back to me with that information, i didnt know you could see that information with just a simple right click!
But im afraid that doesnt really help me solve the problem, im not sure what all of that information means! :SI have very little experience with applets, but I can tell you what I would do to debug this (forgive me if you already know this stuff).
Look at the stack trace you get in the Java Console that I posted earlier. Each line contains a method that was called from the method on the previous line. So, java.lang.Thread.run() called sun.applet.AppletPanel.run(), which called Room.init(), etc. Look at the topmost line whose method is something you wrote, not something in the standard Java libraries. In your case it looks like PaintSurface.java (specifically, line 22). Look at what line 22 of PaintSurface.java is doing, it's calling Thread.start(). If you check out the Javadoc for Thread.start(), it says IllegalThreadStateException gets thrown if you call start() on a thread that has already started. So that's your problem. Without looking at your code, I'd assume you want to stop your thread in your applet's destroy() override, and instead of reusing it, create a new one each time init() is called.
Ill try and look into, thanks again though, it gives me somthing to work with :D
Btw when you first ran the applet, did all the ghosts(3) load up correctly?Unfortunately, no. The first time I ran it, there was only 1 ghost (or maybe all 3 overlapping each other?) at the top of the screen, and they never moved. Refreshing once made the game play as I think you want it to. Refreshing a third time gave the dreaded red X.
...oh and just out of curiosity,,, did u have fun playing the game :DSure did.

  • Download problem with pacman

    Hi,
i'm new to archlinux and am currently installing arch, unfortunately pacman waits for about 15-20 seconds after each package before he gets the next one so that installing packages is realy time consuming (downloadspeed of the packages is normal around 600kb/s). i do not have any similiar problems with other distributins or downloads and couldn't find anything like this in the wiki, forum or with a searchengine. i realy don't know what could cause this problem and would appreciate any help.
    regards,
    otowa

When you download manually a package (or any file) with wget, is it slow to connect or what?

  • Problems with pacman when upgrading to xorg7

I decided to try and update from xorg-11R6.8 to 7 tonight, after hesitating for a while. I saw all the bug reports and problem threads, and I still can't understand why something that results in so many bugs has been released. It doesn't seem to comply with the KISS principle, either, but who am I to judge?
    Anyway, my problem is this:
When I try to install the xorg components, I get the following message in my terminal. After checking the packe intergrities, it'll go to install the first package and then show this:
load_pkg: missing package name in /var/cache/pacman/pkg/libxkbfile-1.0.1-1.pkg.tar.gz.
After removing xorg-11R6.8, it will do this for any package I try to install, whether part of the new modular xorg or not.
If I do a "pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/xorg-11R6.8.2-6.pkg.tar.gz", it works fine again.
I've read through the Xorg7 wiki entry and there's no reference to this problem.
    Any way to solve it?
    Thanks in advance.

    That didn't really help, either.
Apart from a fresh install, is there anything I can do to just sort out all these stupid problems in one go?
When I try and upgrade to xorg7, I get all these messages about missing object files and libraries, complaints from /sbin/ldconfig about the nvidia module being empty, all this other crap too; it seems like a different thing broken every time. When I downgrade to xorg-6.8, fluxbox comes up and works, but when I go to upgrade anything else with pacman, I just get the load_pkg errors or whatever else.
I've tried editing my /etc/X11/xorg.conf file to the new xorg7 paths when upgrading to xorg7, but it makes no difference.
I don't understand how something that's supposed to simplify Arch could break things for so many people, =

I have this errors......my kernel version is the 2.6.21-ARCH, maybe is this the reason? How can I upgrade the kernel?
    thx

check which package owns the files with 'pacman -Qo $pathtofile'
If it is now owned by a package you can safely force the package to install with 'pacman -Sf kernel26'
If the files are owned by a package then there they are conflicting and the path to follow will be different for each situation.
If you are not sure what to do post here which package (if any) owns the files.

  • [solved] problems with pacman after upgrading to 2.6.27-ARCH

i'm not sure if my problem is related with the new version of software or the fact that i ran out of space during the upgrade. but once i restarted after the upgrade i was not able to boot into the system and the error i would get was:
ERROR: Failed to parse block device name for '/dev/sda3'
    unknown
ERROR: root fs cannot be detected. Try using the rootfstype= kernel parameter.
i followed what some other people did and i booted with livecd, chrooted and regenerated mkinitcpio. since i saw some other people having the same problems here is what i used:
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Boo … omplicated
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Mki … ng_presets
and just for good measure i decided to run fsck:

i was still seeing some segmentation faults so i decided to re-install all of the packages installed:
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pac … re_Restore
now everything seems to work OK except when i run pacman. here is what i get:

thanks for the reply. i tried finding out what packages these libraries beling to but for every single one of these listed i get an error saying that "No packages owns...". could it be something with ldconfig?
    EDIT:

  • Having problems with pacman -R

I am having problems removing packages sometimes. I use "pacman -R <package-name>" and I had certain ones break the system. The recent one it broken down to a ramfs shell. I used "pacman -R nvidia". I couldn't startx and thought I had to reboot.  I have no idea what to do at the ramfs shell. I can't even list directories in it. My question in relation to pacman -R is, is there a safer way to remove packages than pacman -R? Also, are there certain packages I shouldn't be uninstalling? In other words, IMHO, I believe that there are probably packages that can be broken if you are not careful in ArchLinux. The problem is, I don't know which ones! I never have had problems when using other package managers, such as apt-get, so I wonder if this is a package manager specific issue. Any thoughts or suggestions would be highly appreciated.

ok, alas! I tried every command up to "pacman -S kernel26" (reinstalling the kernel. Here is the response on screen:
warning: kernel26 local (2.6.23.12-3) is newer than core (2.65.22.9-1)
warning: kernel26-2.6.23.12-3 is up to date -- reinstalling
    resolving dependencies...
    looking for inter-conflicts...
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
    :nvidia: requires kernel26>=2.6.23.8-2
This other part may help you a little, too. I tried typing "arch root=/dev/sdd3" , because that is where the root partition is. The boot is on /dev/sdd1.
    Here is the response:
    arch root=/dev/sdd3
... (whole bunch of data here, apparently working so far)
    FATAL: could not load /lib/modules/2.6.22-ARCH/modules.dep
But, believe it or not it did boot in the system this way, but with those error messages.
This may help even further. I hope this isn't too big. This is my /var/log/pacman.log  :

  • Kernel26mm update problem with pacman

:: kernel26mm: local version (2.6.11.rc5.mm1-1) is newer than repo version (2.6.11.mm1-1)
    So that's the problem.

Yes, but anyway pacman should know:
    2.6.11.mm1-1 is newer than 2.6.11.rc5.mm1-1

  • Root partition suddenly full while updating packages with Pacman

    Hello
I'm not sure if this is a problem with Pacman, but my root partition seems to have become completely full while updating my system using pacman -Syu. Before updating anything, there seems to have been an update to a new version of Pacman (3.3.1-1) that needed to be installed before updating packages.
In the middle of the updates, I got this error:
error: error writing to file '/var/cache/pacman/pkg/openoffice-base-3.1.1-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.gz': No space left on device
Also, I don't know if this is related, but I got a lot of 'not found' errors after that.
    The entire output from everything:

Also, I haven't restarted my system yet. Should I try and see what happens?
    Thanks!

This happened to me recently. I could not restart my laptop properly due to lack of space on my root partition.
The error during boot was along the lines of:-
Starting D-BUS system messagebus   - Failed
Failed to start message bus: Failed to close "var/run/dbus.pid": No space left on drive
    Hardware Abstraction Layer - Failed
everything else during the boot was as normal till I started to type in my username - but couldn't because the keyboard was inactive.
I used a Wolvix live CD to investigate and found a QT4 file in the packman cache which was 6.9GB in size (compared to the normal 27mb size). Once that was deleted and the drive/partition error checked everything was back to normal. So before you reboot I would definitely recommend clearing any oversize file out of your packman cache, or just clearing the whole cache.

  • Read only file system and Problems witth pacman -S

Hi im a newbie at Arch, and i have 2 problems...
    1) When I log in as a root user i can't modify any of the configuration files cause i only have a " Read only file System" does anyone know how  I can  change this cause im sick of using my live cd to modify the files i need to change..
    2) I have problems with pacman -S it says " Unable to lock database if you're sure pacman is not already running you can remove /tmp/pacman.lck"
when i do rm /tmp/pacman.lck it says that it can't be done cause the file doesn't exist.. and Im sure that my dhcp and dns is working fine... (just in case of any wonder)
Well if someone could help me i really would appreciate it

  • Problem with xfce and/or mouse and keyboard

    Hi!
Two days ago I've turned on my laptop with Arch and the display manager Slim has frozen immediately. Later on Single-User mode I've uninstalled it. Now in normal mode when I type "startxfce4" everything is showing up, but the mouse and keyboard don't work. I know it's not frozen, because animation of mouse and CPU Frequency Monitor is on.
Strange fact is that laptop is not connecting with the Internet, so now I don't know where the problem is.
It's happening when I start xfce both from user and super user.
Just before those troubles I've updated everything with "pacman -Syu", but I haven't seen anything strange. Also the computer could have been roughly turned off (by unplugging power supply), when was turning on.
    Thanks,
    Gaba

Sorry for not replying, but I didn't have access to my laptop by this time.
On grub I have only normal mode and 'fallback' mode, so I have result from 'journalctl' from normal mode.
I'm sending the fragment of this file where you can see everything after I typed 'startxfce4' in console:
    http://codepad.org/8pYIj8qC
I see that something is wrong, but after some attempts I don't know how to fix this ^^
    Edit:
Oh, I forgot to write, that I've tried activate some drivers from 'lspci -k' (there were no "Kernel driver in use:..." in almost every device), but it didn't fi anything.

  • [Solved] Problem with upgrading polkit or filesystem

Ok so first off they do "upgrade" but the problem has me worried that something is wrong.
A week or so ago after converting to systemd I tried getting rid of ConsoleKit and installing polkit 0.107 from the [testing] repo but it caused pacman to get stuck at "(1/1) upgrading polkit"  So I tried that a couple of times but I could never get pacman to finish and get past that.  I had to control + c to get out of that then type exit in the console (no text was visible that I typed however but typing exit + enter worked for closing it).  So I then opened a new terminal and downgraded polkit back to 0.105 and waited for polkit to get pushed from testing to see if it would fix my issue.  Fast forward to today and I go to upgrade my system.  Among the 83 updates or so was polkit and filesystem.  What do you know it gets stuck at "(15/83) upgrading polkit".  Fuck so I control + c, open new terminal and then do the upgrade again and it continues to update but this time it gets stuck doing the same thing for filesystem.  I control + c, open new terminal and continue the upgrade until it finishes, which it does this time, and I reboot.
I tried re-installing polkit again and filesystem again but they continue to get stuck.  I cannot "complete" the upgrade even though they show the appropriate version when I check.

It's problem in pam configuration files. You need to create files useradd, userdel, groupadd and groupdel in /etc/pam.d/ directory with following content:
    auth sufficient pam_rootok.so
    auth required pam_unix.so
    account required pam_unix.so
    session required pam_unix.so
    password required pam_permit.so
You da man! I also had to add grpconv and chage to get filesystem working but all seems well now thanks!
Doug piston had me try something that I think will help anyone else who has this problem.  Try re-installing pambase and shadow.  It generated back most of any I was missing.
