Problem with placing a Word Document

Hello!
I am a new user of InDesign. I followed the instructions given in the tutorials on placing a document into InDesign, but it just doesn' t work. I use MS Office  Professional Plus 2010. In InDesign I do as instructed: File -> Place and pick the document I want to import and nothing happens.
If anyone has any suggestions on what might be going wrong, I urge him/her to reply to this thread! Thank you very much in advance!

CS4 should be able to handle a DOCX file.
That said, since you're a newcomer to InDesign allowing me to make a couple of standard recommendations.

    I have a Windows 7 Home Premium Computer
    I have read all the suggestions and I have tried downloading multiple versions of Adobe Reader for Windows 7 and Vista from http://get.adobe.com/reader/otherversions/.
    Prior to downloading each version I would delete the current version using  control panel programs uninstall.
    After each new installation I would shut down the computer and then restart the computer.
    I have tried downloading versions with and without having my antivirus (CA Total Defence) running.
    I am told after download that the version downloaded successfully.
    I have read Acrobat Help http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/troubleshoot-reader-installation-windows.html and followed the instructions.
    None of the above has helped.
    The problem is no matter what version of Adobe Reader I download, I cannot seem to open a PDF and read it. Nor will the Reader itself stay open.
    1. If I try opening the reader from the desktop link or from the actual program menu, the reader opens for about 5 seconds and then closes of its own accord. If I try to click on any of the reader menus (eg File, Edit, View, Window, Help, Tools) then a warning bell is sounded and the menu does not open. Shortly thereafter the reader closes.
    2. If I try to open the reader by double clicking on a PDF document then the reader opens but the document is not shown (only the grey PDF reader screen is shown) and then the reader closes after about 5 seconds of its own accord.
    The desktop shortcut shows as the 'red Adobe Reader icon'. But the actual program menu icon shows as a blank folder icon.  All PDF documents show as the PDF Adobe icon.
    I have tested various PDFs and none will open on this computer but they will open on other computers.
    I have created a word document and saved it as a PDF. It looked like it had save correctly (has the appropriate icon) but when I try to open it as per step 2 above then the document is not shown and then the reader closes after about 5 seconds of its own accord.
    Does anyone have any ideas about what is going on and how I can fix this?

    I placed the properties file in WEB-INF/classes..folder.....

  • Authorization problem with VF01 "Create Billing Documents"

    We face following problem with VF01 "Create Billing Documents".
    Transaction: VF01
    User: Joe
    Authorization of Joe:
         VKORG Sales Organization: A, B (authorization object V_VBRK_VKO)
         FKART Billing Type: 1, 2 (authorization object V_VBRK_FKA)
    The objective for Joe:
       Joe is qualified to create bills in
          sales org A only for billing type 1 and in
          sales org B only for billing type 2.
       Joe should not be able to create bills for
          sales org A with billing type 2 and in
          sales org B with billing type 1.
    How can we solve this problem?
    We already searched for userexits without any success.
    Any help or ideas are very appreciated.

    There are standard authority-checks based on Sales organization (authorisation object V_VBRK_VKO) and/or Billing type (V_VBRK_FKA).
    An option would be to create a new billing type, define specific authorisations and use the new billing type for these documents.
    The bad thing is that you would also need a special (new) sales order type, because the billing document type is unique per sales order.
    So maybe it is easier to have a different sales organization.
    Another option would be to create a new authorization object and check it in the billing documents.
    If you wish, you could modify program LV60A005 & LV60A006.
    Then you might check various user/customer exits.
    Some functions to check: EXIT_SAPLV60A_001/002,
    EXIT_SAPLV60B_001 - 008, EXIT_SAPLV60B_010 - 011.

  • Use Powershell to replace text with image in Word document

    I have a powershell script that uses a Word document as a template to create signatures that I am pushing out to my organization.
    The document is populated with text formatted the way I want the signature to look, that I then do a FindText and ReplaceText on.  This works fine for replacing text with text, but I can't figure out how to properly replace some of the holder text with
    an image and a link.  I found a few posts about adding images to word documents, but none that seem to work properly in this scenario.
    Any insight would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

    I am using Contribute CS3. I am having a problem with multiple versions of documents being published on the sever with 001, 002, etc in the name. So that I end up with 2 or 3 versions of a document on the server. Does anyone know why / how Contribute  is doing this? Thanks for any help you can give.

    Some things to try...
    Using Windows Explorer navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Reader, then double-click on Eula.exe and accept the license agreement
    Can you open Adobe Reader by itself?  If so, try disabling Protected Mode [Edit | Preferences | Security (Enhanced)].
    If you cannot open Reader by itself, try to disable Protected Mode in the registry; download, unzip, then run the attached registry script
    It could even be a malware issue; see http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/reader-core-dll-error.html

  • Oversized text and lack of pages when placing a word document (.docx)

    I'm reposting this, since the last one seemed to get lost in the jumble:
    When placing text from a word document (.docx) indesign only gives me three pages for a 118 long document.  Also, those pages are blank, and to access the text, I have to delete a few blank lines.  When I do this however, the text is grossly oversized.  Changing the font does not help, as even on 6 pt, the text is much larger than it should be.  Help?  I've tweaked import options (although I may not know enough to diagnose the issue I am having), changed the format of the file (.doc, rtf) nothing seems to work.

    The problem is the page size. It's tiny lee than an inch wide and a bit over an inch tall. I'm not sure what you set up, but what you have now seems to have been made much smaller with the Page tool, perhaps.
    Set your ruler units in your prefs with nothing open to a system you are comfortable working in (the doc is set up in Picas, now. Do you know how to work in Picas?), then create a new file the size you really want.

  • Problem with creating bookmarks (word- pdf)

    Index entries between section number and heading in my word document prevent the creation of the section number in the PDF bookmarks.
    I'm using Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro (9.4.5) and Microsoft Word 2007.
    Does anyone know the problem, and more importantly, does anyone have a solution?

    What version of WORD and Acrobat? I just ran PDF Maker with WORD 2007 and AA8 and turned off the headings 3 that were in the document and they did not show up in the bookmarks.

  • Problem with web service for document template

    Hi, I am trying to set up a web service to use with a word template (I use the template designer). The problem is that when I press the 'Test Page' button in the web service tool, I get an error : "Error retrieving URL to Web service test page ...'. I have searched the forum and made sure that the correct J2EE hostname/port is being used, as well as making sure the user/ password is set for the service. I have no idea how to proceed, please help me!

  • ID6 -- Problem with ordinals in legacy documents

    I recently acquired CS6, and am experiencing a strange problem with documents created in the original Indesign CS.  I typically leave the ordinal flag turned on in the OpenType menu.  This used to work just fine -- it recognized when a string of characters was an ordinal (e.g., 3rd) and when it was just ordinary text.  When I load these files into ID6, I find that, seemingly at random, some characters which are just ordinary text (sometimes in the middle of a word) are formatted as though they were ordinal numbers.  (See screen capture below.)  There is no apparent pattern to when it happens, at least so far as I can tell.  I can fix it by manually selecting the problem characters and turning off "ordinals" for those characters, but its quite annoying.  Has anybody else had this problem, and can anybody suggest a solution?  Thanks.

    Are you using the same font and version?
    The behavior of ordinals depends on the font (to be precise, on how the OpenType feature has been programmed in). Some fonts use "smart" ordinals, reacting only when preceded by a number -- the very smartest ones only set "st" in superscrpt when preceded by a "1". Others always apply superscript, which I believe is what you see here. (Not all characters are superscripted because apparently this font does not contain a superscript "k", for example. Which characters are considered "ordinals" is left at the discretion of the font designer.)
    Additionally, it's entirely possible the Ordinal feature behaves different in different versions of InDesign. Adobe is constantly tweaking OpenType behavior. It's extremely likely the behavior in your original version (the very first "CS") was actually incorrect and was fixed somewhere in one of the next five versions.
    All said and done: Ordinals is definitely *not* a feature to always have switched on. You should only apply it to text where you would *want* your ordinals, as in your "90th".

  • Abobe v8: Problems with converting from word 2003 to PDF

    I use one of those free conversion tools, since i am a student. My problem is that i have a word document with a unique page margin. When i convert from word 2003 to pdf everything gets converted except the page margin which is much bigger then it's supposed to be. Do anyone know how i can fix that?, any help are appriciated.

    Ive downloaded the trialversion of Acrobat because our company needs to make little pdf's out of 40/50 documents and i want to try what program is best for our...
    The thing is: i just cant get the tables right (sry for my bad english ) This problem exist with: Docx, doc, pdf, etc. etc.
    When i have a table, with the upper standardscellsalignment set to 0,1 cm. The tables get messed up when i export it to an PDF. However, when i print it, its normal !!! (???)
    The most upper horizontale lines are gone and the vertical connections arent any good.
    I tried every setting, but i just cant seem to find whats wrong. I also tried 4 other programs, but same problems (also the standard saveoption in word: save word to pdf makes the same error.
    There are 2 weird (part)-solutions: when i dissable the upper standard cell alignment in the table, so set to 0, and then save.... and the problem is gone (but i really need this upper cell alignment).
    Other solution: When i dissable all the collours in the table, it is (almost) oke, but not completly. (but this isnt an option also)

    I´m working with a prototype-installation of SharePoint 2010 where co-authoring is an important function.
    But I have found one problem however.
    According to the following article co-authoring is not supported for macro enabled word-files (.docm ):

    Found the solution!
    Store a macro enable Word-template (.dotm) in the Sharepoint library and save the created Word document in non macro enable format (.docx).
    The document vill keep the connection to the template and all the macros will work together with co-athoring!

    Here's a followup to Bjorn's original post:
    Save a copy of the .dotm as a .docx, in the SharePoint team  lib where your users will be working.
    Next, create a a new doc lib with a nice short name such as "a" (to keep path short) on the site that holds your team's doc lib, and move the .dotm file there.  Then, right click on the .dotm's name to Get File Properties and copy
    the path to  the .dotm file. The path might look something like this: 
    https://win.MyCompany.com/TeamSite/a/myfile.docm.
    Now that you have the path to the .dotm, go back and edit its .doc version, that you created in the Team Lib. In the Developer tab in the ribbon, click on DOCUMENT TEMPLATE. The Templates and Add-ins dialog will appear. PASTE the path,
    above, into the Document Template field.
    Now your .docx knows the path to the .dotm, and since your users can access both locations, the macro in the .docx will still work OK...and your working doc lib won't be junked up with the .dotm version.

    I've creatred a table to store the word files paths that the user wants to attach to a parfent record!
    and then created a form to query all word-documents that is attached to that parent record to let the user open it
    Is your code benefit to me in that case?
    I tried to do it but the other one (Magoo's code) only open the CMD Prompt!
