Problems importing and playing songs from an external cd/dvd drive

I am having problems importing songs on my PC from an external usb drive. What I have is an external combo usb firewire drive hooked up to my pc with a usb cable. (usb 2.0) When I launch itunes, it sees the cd I have loaded but when I go to import the songs, itunes just pops past each song in a second like each song was just a second in length. Then I have some corrupt file in my itunes library. Itunes gets the cd names and titles from CDDB correctly but can't play the songs or import them. I use this pc solely for playing audio, it is a Pentium 4 2.6 with 1GB of ram with build in usb 2.0 on the motherboard. There is no other software installed on the system other then virus software. When I use Windows Media Player the cd is read perfectly fine. I even play DVDs off the drive with no problems too. This problem in intermittent, with different cds. These are all commercial cds not burnt ones that someone made for me. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Toonz - I have exactly the same problem when trying to import songs - itunes does recognise the cd drive and names of tracks etc - it just won't play more than one second of each, or import any more. i did run the cd diagnostic check you suggested - results below - don't mean anything to me i'm afraid - any bright ideas?
this was a christmas present and i haven't managed to put any new music on apart from what was already on our pc, so am v sad and hope you can make it better....

  • Can I install a retail os10.5.6 from an external usb dvd drive?

Since the internal dvd combo drive does not read double layer dvd, I tried to install the new version from an external usb dvd. The installation starts but when I have to restart the computer goes back to the first screen.

Apple does not require any particular type of dvd Just says "an external dvd"
What document are you referring to? The fact that you can read/write with a particular DVD drive does not necessarily mean you can boot from it.
If you have another Mac available, you can probably "borrow" its DVD drive for your OS installation by using FireWire Target Disk mode.

  • Can i show and play music from my external hard drive in iTunes without adding it to my Mac hard drive?

I have more music than I can keep on my Macbook hard drive by over 200GB. I'm hoping to be able to show and play all music from my external hard drive in iTunes without having to add any of it to my Macbook Hard Drive

    Hello B3NN13,
If you would like to add the music from your external hard drive to iTunes without copying it to the iTunes Library on your internal hard drive, you may find the following article helpful:
Add files to your library without adding them to your iTunes folder
When you add an item already on your computer to your iTunes library, iTunes places a copy of the file in your iTunes folder. The original file remains in its current location.
You can change this setting so that files are added to your iTunes library without being added to the iTunes folder. You might want to do this, for example, if you prefer to store video files on an external disk but still want to view them in iTunes.
Choose iTunes > Preferences, and click Advanced.
Deselect the checkbox next to “Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library.”
From now on, when you drag a file to your library or choose File > Add to Library, the item appears in iTunes, but the actual file isn’t copied or moved.
Tip: You can temporarily reverse this setting by holding down the Option key while you drag files to the iTunes window.

  • How do I import all my songs from my external hard drive?

Earlier I backed up my iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive. I want to make sure that importing my library to my new computer is seamless.
    Thank you

So it sounds like you want to copy your iTunes library from your external drive, back to an internal drive?
    Try this:
In iTunes, click Edit > Preferences > Advanced tab > General tab
Select the options to "Keep iTunes music folder organized" and "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library"
Make sure the iTunes Music Folder location is directed to where on the internal drive you want to save your files
    Click OK
Then, click Advanced > Consolidate Library
This will copy the files to the internal drive, as well as make sure iTunes is reading your files from that internal drive, and not the external
    Hope this is helpful

  • Importing and copying songs from my own CD

I have imported songs and copied songs form own CD's. Today, every time I’m trying to listen any of my songs I will have on the left side on my iTunes program, an exclamation mark pop up which prevent me to open my songs or any of them. A little window will open and will say: The song i.e. “Loving you tonight” could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would like to locate it? Where to locate any of those songs, I'm already inside my library!
Can you help to remove that general blockage preventing me to hear any music I record or copied from my personal CD’s thanks you?

  • T430s: boot from an external USB DVD drive

I wanted to change boot sequence to boot from external DVD drive to install Win8. To access the BIOS I hit Enter (empty password I guess) but in the BIOS everything is greyed out: I can't make any changes. What is going on?

    @kaja69...
As Rich has stated, you have a supervisor password set, and as Jin Li has stated, there is no default password.

  • Installing SL from an external USB  DVD drive

    Hi, folks.
The DVD drive in my MBP suddenly stopped working awhile back after I updated to 10.5.7 (won't read any disks at all), and I would like to install SL on it using an external Samsung Writemaster TS-H552U with a USB connection (Firewire is not an option with this unit, as the drive casing only offers a USB connection).
Is this possible, and if so, what I need are step by step instructions on how to do this. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks, Kappy. I'll give that a try, but have one more question before I do:
Do I have to watch out for any reboots during the upgrade? If so, at what point(s) do they occur, and will I need to use the OPTION key again if it does, or does it just do the upgrade in one shot and reboot normally afterwards?
Oh, and I've already installed the latest updates for 10.5.8, and will do a disk and permission repair before I start, just to be on the safe side.
Here's the specs for the Samsung Writemaster TS-H552U:

    Thanks again.
EDIT: Sorry, but I forgot to ask, how long should the upgrade take?

  • Can I install Leopard from an external USB DVD drive?

I am trying to install Leopard onto an older PB G4 whose internal drive is shot. I have an external Pioneer USB 2 drive attached, but when the Leopard Installer prompts me to restart, the installer doesn't kick in and the computer restarts into basic OSX. I've tried to choose the Installer DVD via System Preferences "Start-up Disk" pane, but it doesn't show up. The DVD drive does have its own AC power source.
Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Mac OS X will only boot PowerPCs with Firewire, not with USB. That's the reason it doesn't work.

  • My macbook pro won't read dvds from my external cd/dvd drive.

I have a new macbook pro 13 that I got for Christmas. I purchased a external cd/dvd usb drive so that I can watch movies on my mac since it doesn't have a dvd drive built-in. I put my dvd into the drive, and all my mac does is open a fiel that has the video and audio seperated. I tried clicking on the video file to see if I can watch it, but the computer has no software to read it, apparently. I don't know if this is a software thing or if it's my drive.

First, try one of the DVD drive cleaning kits that are available.

  • Broken cd drive, so can I boot Os X dvd in external usb Dvd drive on iBook

    So there it is:
My cd/dvd drive on my iBook 1,33 GHz PowerPc G4, 1,5GB DDR SDRAM is broken....
I want to know if is there some way to format my iBook hard drive and then boot from an external cd/dvd drive to install OS X 10.4 Tiger on it.."????
    Please help
    Thanks

You first need to boot your computer from the external drive with the Tiger disk. Once the computer is booted you can run disk Utility, format your internal hard drive and install Tiger. I don't know about more recent G4s but older Macs used to be somewhat selective about the brand of drives from which they would boot so there could be issues there.
Let us know how it goes.

  • Cannot boot to Windows disc from external USB DVD drive.

I have a MacBook Pro 17" Early 2011 8,3. I have tried to use bootcamp to install Windows 7 from a external USB DVD drive. All I get, like many people, is a black screen with a blinking cursor, as if it never makes it to boot. I tried restarting to the OS selection for holding alt, and tried the DVD again, did not work.
I saw a few posts claiming that this didn't work on some models of Mac because of a EFI problem that would not allow booting from a external USB, which is really stupid because it would seems some models can... And MacBook airs can... Can someone please confirm this for me? Has anyone found a resolution?
If not, APPLE PLEASE FIX THIS.

    Hi,
Thanks for the reply. Yes the MBP is currently running Tiger, I want to flatten this with a fresh install of Leopard. I can view the install DVD when in Tiger currently.
I haven't tried what you have suggested, but I have seen various posts suggesting this approach. I've also seen several posts explain how to create a partition on an external firewire Harddrive and this seems to have worked for various people.
This would however mean that I didn't really need the external Lacie drive at all, as I've got access to my G5s DVD drive over the network. The more I search on this, the more convinced I am the USB drive was a bad idea.
Once again thank for the response.

  • I recently restored my laptop and also iTunes from an external hard drive, but when I play songs, it says the original file could not be found. How do I locate and fix this?

I recently restored my laptop with Windows 7 and imported my iTunes library from my external hard drive. When I try to play songs, it says it cannot and that the original file could not be located. How do I fix this?

Put the files back where iTunes expects them to be.

  • How do i prevent an mp3 downloaded in Firefox from automatically importing and playing in iTunes?

i download a lot of music from blogs, most of it is indie label or no-label and can't be purchased from the itunes store. anyway, using firefox, when i download a track it saves it to my downloads folder and then itunes automatically imports the file and starts playing it.
needless to say this is annoying. i'm usually doing other stuff while downloading and i don't want itunes opening on it's own and playing songs while i'm busy doing other things. also, i prefer to move the files into itunes manually.
i feel like this should be simple, and maybe it is, but i can't figure it out. how do i keep this from happening? anyone?

Please please please update your software RIGHT NOW.

  • I was able to drag and drop songs from iTunes in to Garage Band so I could slow them down to learn how to play them. Since the newest version of iTunes came out I no longer can. Is this a feature that I can turn back on?

I was able to drag and drop songs from iTunes in to Garage Band so I could slow them down to learn how to play them. Since the newest version of iTunes came out I no longer can. Is this a feature that I can turn back on? I really would like to continue to utlize that feature because it makes learning to play songs easier. Any help would be appericated.

To import music into your iTunes library on the computer go to iTunes>Help>iTunes Help>Add items to iTunes and follow the instructions
Delete the "songs" that do not play in your iTunes library and reimport them.
