Problems recording back to tape from FCE

I can't figure this out. For some reason when I go to record my video back to tape, either throught print to video or directly recording off the timeline, the video breaks up, gets digitized, and sometimes the sound freezes.
My set up is a 15" iMac running FCE HD 3.0 with two daisy-chained external hard drives (one for video and one for music). I have a firewire connection to a Panasonic gs-500.
Everything is rendered, the audio is mixed down and I have even tried shutting everything down and then restarting fresh with camcorder on and plugged in.
Any ideas?

Hi(Bonjour)!
With my iMac G4 1 Go ram, I had this kind of problem, ruining my print to video operation.
So, I develop a simple"protocol" to avoid this:
Do a cold start of your mac, turn on your camcorder, plug it. Start FCE, open just one project, and just the sequence to be exported, select all clips in timeline, render it, do an audio mixdown and... (here's the magic) scroll the playhead from beginning to the end of the sequence, with some playing .(it's seem that this process load the cache memory, at least in my own experience)
This procedure always works for me...
If there is a song bought on iTune Music Store, you can't use this track.
Try a test version with just one minute of movie. (set in and out point in timeline and do the print to tape operation).
Does your hard drives are fragmented or full at more than 80% level?
As said earlier, Firewire ports on G4 iMac are connected together and the handling of two HDs plus a camcorder may drive you into problems.
Try a new project with just one drive, or simply the internal one.

  • Recording back to tape

I was just wondering if someone can point me to some instructions on how to write a previously "captured" MiniDV tape back to a MiniDV tape. I imported them all into iMovie '08, as that was where I was doing my editing. I made the mistake of taping over the original MiniDV tape. I would now like to re-write all of my "clips" back to a MiniDV tape so I have a backu. All of the clips are timestamped; however, when I write them back to tape using the "print to tape" feature of FinalCutExpress 4, I lose all of the dates. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you sure you lose the dates ? I know for sure that you lose the original timecode (each recording starts from 0, whatever is the original timecode of the clip), but I thought date and time were preserved even if not visible in FCE. Never checked dates myself though.
Have you tried with iMovie ? but probably going back to iMovie from FCE for this purpose is no longer an option for you.

  • Can I "record" to DV tape from a DV file?

I have this huge (23 gig) DV file of a favorite project. It's just under one hour in length. I no longer have the original source tapes, and would like a DV tape "copy" as a back-up. I thought I could just hook-up the camcorder and record away, but I guess not.
Can anyone tell me an easy way to transfer a DV file to DV tape?

    hi pooper,
a single mini DV can hold around 11.5 GB in sp mode while can hold 17.5 GB in lp mode.
You might consider this: (not free)
    http://coolatoola.com/
But still you might need more than one mini DV to back up that 23 gb of file.
Or you can "compress" your file to fit into a single mini dv catridge.
    Good Luck.

  • Problem removing backed up files from iPod

I backed up a lot of files from my macbook to my iPod classic. When connected to iTunes, they appear under "other". The "other" files are about 55GB. I don't need the backed up files any more, but can't find them listed anywhere when I view my iPod content in iTunes. Plus, I don't think I should delete ALL the files under "other" because some are necessary for normal operation of the iPod. Can anyone help me with this? Thank you!

    Hello Frank,
You will have to navigate to these files from within a Finder window. You can do this by clicking on your iPod's icon on your desktop.

  • Problem getting back to ethernet from wireless

Hi.. I use my iBook all day at school wireless. In the evening at my dorm, when connected to ethernet, I find that my chat programs (msnmsgr, adium) and mail.app cant find any internet connection. Neither does irc work. But i can access internet through safari/firefox/opera. However this problem seems to be self healing in the sense that within 6-7 hours i can use all the above apps w/o any problem.
Also FYI adium says that contact list could not be read and mail.app cant find internet connection at all.

KingOfDreams, Welcome to the discussion area!
I recommend that you set up 2 locations: one for home and one for school. Then you can easily switch between them.

  • Print back to tape FCP & Z1...how?

I need to print back to tape from my edited footage using Final Cut Pro 5.0.4 and my Sony Z1...cant work out how to do it can anyone tell me there workflow to do this?
Should the camera be in VCR mode??? and how do you record?
    Thanks...

I recently tried this (with Sony Z1) and it wouldn't work - until I trashed my preferences:
FCP gets it’s knickers in a twist from time to time and if you trash your preferences it will often sort things out (with no harm done to your project etc etc) . . .
    Download FCP Rescue :
    http://fcprescue.andersholck.com/
Once it’s downloaded, hit Backup first, then hit Trash. If the Trash does no good, hit Restore and everything's as it was. (Easy-Peasy)
FCP Rescue is freeware but there’s provision to make a donation if you wish – (it’s well worth it)
If you need reassurance about trashing your prefs, go to this Apple page:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302337
    Or this Ken Stone page:

  • Question for Sue and others - Problems exporting back to Mini DV tape

    Hi there Sue
This is a very interesting concept that you have mentioned in another of your posts:
"In the past, many posters reported this type of problem. There is a workaround that I realize should not be necessary, but it has helped many.
Instead of exporting to the camera, "Share" your iMovie video as a QuickTime Full Quality DV
Import this QT movie into a NEW iMovie project.
Then export (share) that to your camcorder.
It does take time to convert the imovie to QuickTime, but in the end it should work."
I have a similar problem where that when I want to back up by edited movie back to mini DV tape, there might be the occasional 'dropped frame' or image break up that appears from time to time on my back up tape. This then renders this back up useless for my purpose. Currently I select 'share' and then 'video camera' to perform this action. Sometimes I think that its Imovie's fault that these errors occur and sometimes I blame the video camera - who knows?!! One thing I do notice is that when looking at the video transferring from Imovie to Video tape, any error wont show on the Imovie window, but will show on the video camera flip out screen. I wonder if it means that it is the video camera's fault?
Do you think that your process might cure this problem?
    Many thanks
    Daniel

    Hi lorddim1,
In addition to Sue's great advice, another method of exporting to your camera may solve your problem - a method which I always use with success. In iMovie's Preferences (Menu>Preferences), check the box "Play DV project video through to DV camera". Set your camera to the VCR (Play) position and simultaneously click the Play button in iMovie and the Record button on the camera (or camera remote).
After exporting to tape, it's best to then un-check the Preferences box, as leaving it checked can sometimes mute the audio playback in iMovie in some versions.
The quality of the export is identical to that using the "Share" feature in iMovie. It may also help to set the iMovie Preference for Playback to "Standard (smoother motion)" and to ensure that, in the Timeline, "Show Clip Volume Levels" and "Show Audio Waveforms" are not activated (go to the View menu for these or Control-Click on the audio track/s). The less iMovie has to worry about, often the smoother the playback. Please note that the Playback preference has no effect on the quality of the export - it's only a setting for playback on the monitor.
    Hope this helps!

  • Select * from viewname where 1 1 gives records back

for one customer the following sql gives records back
select * from viewname where 1<>1
we asked the customer to send over the database to us but we can't reproduce this behaviour. We don't get any records. the problem is we don't have the same version of oracle they use 9.2.0.4 and we used 10.2.0.1. i can't download the 9i version anymore.
Does anybody know of a bug in oracle which can cause such behaviour or a setting which can correct this?

i suspect the customer would first want us to show that their version is the problem. It doesn't work like that. If your customer called Oracle Support and said... "we're experiencing problems and our database version is 9.2.0.4"... oracle would turn around and say "that version is no longer supported, please upgrade". If they insist on knowing that their version is the problem, then the answer is "yes, it's the problem, it has known bugs and newer versions are available that address thousands of issues since"
Using a query with "where 1 <> 1" as a condition that is bringing back results, is clearly wrong. You have clearly shown that in other more recent versions of the database it is working ok, therefore you have already proven that there is a bug in the version they are using.
They are suspecting our view has a design flaw. We have in our documentation stated requirements for our software are the 9 or 10 version of oracle or sql server. So for me there are a couple of possibilities:
-we try to reproduce the query on their database on the same oracle database version as they are using - problem is we don't have this exact same version and oracle does not have this version for download on their site anymore or so it seemsThat's because it's no longer supported. Any good software house will keep on top of it's customers to ensure they are upgraded in line with Oracle's ability to support. So, partially, it's your companies fault for saying you support version 9, when clearly you can't.
--i ask other more knowledgable people(hopefully this forum) who might know about such problems which might result in a correction in the customer oracle database configuration or know of a bug in the customers version which causes this behaviour. You'll be lucky to find people still using such an old version (you're talking a version that almost 10 years out of date). The best you can do is to log onto Oracle Support and search there for known issues... and the answer on those is likely to be a recommendation to patch or upgrade too.
-we change the queries to these views so they won't try to give back any records on their serverHow will you know unless you are able to test them?

  • What form does one export from FCE to get it into movie theater tape form?

If one is wildly enthused about one's documentary, and thinks it is what the world is waiting to see in theaters, how does one take it from FCE to...? Can one simply upload it to a miniDV camcorder, and then send it to some professional editing company to be put on tape? Is that even an option on FCE, or does one need the full Final Cut Studio? Does one need to shoot with a $2500 camcorder to get enough quality, or is it possible with a $1000 Canon camcorder?
Yeah, I feel silly asking, but am wondering how the pros do it. I have had Tom Wolsky's DVD "Final Cut Express HD Made Easy" for two weeks now, and it is going to my head.
    Hugh

I have a Canon HF100 which records 1920X1080 at 17MB/sec. I want to edit and upload to tape a documentary about a non-profit on whose Board I sit. I want to do it as a fund-raiser, but I have never met anyone who did that with this consumer level of camcorder. Maybe not possible.

  • Getting Panasonic DVC 30 to record from FCE

I can capture from the dvc 30 but not record playback of the time line. I have tried different cables and turning both the computer & camera on and off. My DVD recorder (liteon) doesn,t want to see video from FCE either. What to do?

If you want to use Camera Playthrough so that you can play the timeline through your camera and into the DVD Recorder, you need to connect your camera's AV-Out socket to the Recorder's AV-In.
Then in the FCE menu go to View>Video Out and click "Refresh Video Devices". Go back there and check that "Apple Firewire NTSC" is selected.

PS:  I'm not sure of the actual OS level, but I have not allowed it to upgrade to Maverick yet; concerned about it because of a few things I've read...

A Safari extension or third party plugin may be causing the menu bar issue.
From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test. If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.
If it's not an extensions issue, try troubleshooting third party plug-ins.
Back to Safari > Preferences. This time select the Security tab. Deselect:  Allow plug-ins. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that made a difference, instructions for troubleshooting plugins here.
As for which OS X is installed.
Click the Apple () menu top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac.
    The version is noted there.
v10.6 Snow Leopard v10.7 Lion  v10.8 Mountain Lion
It's your choice whether or not to upgrade to Mavericks. If you decide to do this, make sure your Mac meets the requirements noted here.

  • HELP! How can I switch back and forth from LT to FCE to sync sound?

I'm using LT 1.2.1 and FCE 3.0. I haven't used it for 2 or 3 years, but people in this forum have been amazing at helping me get an old project working again.
Here's my latest question. I swore back then there was a way to move back and forth between LT and FCP so I wouldn't have to render my LT files each time I wanted to drop it into FCP.
    Here's what I'm doing:
I've created an entire "movie" in LT that now needs to be fine-tuned to be sync'd up with a professional voiceover, which is why I'm using FCP. The only way I can figure out how to make sure the LT file is going to be sync'd with the audio is to render the movie in LT, import it into FCE, see if the audio works with it, if not, I go back to LT, move things around, then re-render, import into FCE, and hope it all sync's.
I think there was an easier way to go back and forth between the two.
Along the same lines, is there a way to get the audio from FCE (or some sort of a representation) into LT? The LT file must be adapted to the audio, and if I could "see" the audio in LT, it would be infinitely easier.
    Thanks!
    Bob

LiveType does not support any kind of audio, Bob.
Go through your movie in the FC Timeline and set markers at the relevant cue points by pressing M.
Pressing M a second time whilst sitting on the marker, will open a dialog where you can type a suitable description in the name field. Keep the description short -it might help to take notes too.
Export a copy of the movie (including markers) and bring it into LiveType with File > Place background Movie. The markers will show up at the top of the LT timeline, with their descriptions.
Delete the background from LiveType when you have everything lined up. Save your LT project file and import it into FCE. You can use the project file exactly like a video clip.
If you need to go back to LiveType for changes, right click the LT file in FCE's Timeline. Choose "Open in Editor". This will open the project in LT. Make changes, save the file and it will update in FCE.
