Problems running xfce (&icewm), issues with xorg...?

Hi,
I am making a 2. attempt at arch linux. I have installed arch on my laptop. The first problem I don't seem to be able to overcome without help is getting xorg working.
When i run startx the tty hangs. Its not even recovered by killing startx from another tty.
First i tried startx without exec. This is the exception in that it did not hang. Then i tried startex with "exec startxfce4" in the .xinitrc. I tried again after a reboot becouse of the message:
/usr/bin/startxfce4: X server already running on display :0
I made an additional attemt using icewm in place of xfce, it did also hang the tty.
My laptop has an integrated intel graphics chip, as well as a NVIDIA dedicated graphics card.
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF119M [NVS 4200M] (rev a1)
At first I tried installing only the NVIDIA driver, but they did not load correctly, assuming I understand the logs. The same with the intel driver. As a result, xorg did not recognize my display. Therefore I have all of the following installed:
xf86-video-intel      xf86-video-nouveau  nvidia  xf86-video-vesa
When I explicitly installed the vesa driver, I did not see an error saying that no monitor was found.
In addition i have the following packages installed:
xorg-server xorg-server-utils xorg-xinit  xfce4 icewm
In addition I may have done
pacman -S xorg and chosen the default xf86-input-evdev
I have put the logs and such here:
http://folk.uio.no/henrikq/arch/xorg/
I have no idea what to do at this point, so help would be appreciated.

Sorry about the long absence, I have been busy.
I do indeed have Optimus. I had a friend look at the problem. He set me up with an .xinitrc and xorg.conf. We got stuck at black screen on startx. I have managed to account for all error but one:
[ 111.205] (EE) Screen 1 deleted because of no matching config section.
xrandr --listproviders, gives:

Provider 1: id: 0x43 cap: 0x2, Sink Output crtcs: 2 outputs: 2 associated providers: 0 name:modesetting
I have put log files etc here:

  • Issues with xorg on HP 1030NR

    Hello all,
       has anyone gotten arch to work on an hp 1030nr netbook? im having issues with the xorg and tried everthing i could find in the wiki and as well as other distro's forums to find solutions.. ive been using arch for over a year now and ive had no problems with it until now..
    currently im running Xubuntu. the graphics appear as they did when windows was on this little beast so i know linux in general WILL work on this laptop...  if anyone has gotten a successful working install of arch on a hp mini 1030nr let me know what you had to do to get it working.. i sold my other laptop and now all i have is this one for now.
    here is what i did and the error messages i was getting:
    installed arch via ftp disc...
    pacman -Syu
    pacman -S xfce4 xorg xf86-video hwd
    hwd -s  (i saw i needed the intel driver so..)
    pacman -S intel
    pacman -Syu  (i did this again just to be sure the packages were up to date.)
    xorgconfig
    i then edited the xinitrc file to start xfce
    startx
    i then get a fatal error reporting that no screens were found.
    so i try once more... and get the same error.
    i check the xorg configs and see the intel driver there, so i change it to the vesa one, double check my changes and save the file.)
    i try startx once more... and its a no-go.
    i tried just starting twm, and i get the same error, but also get random system hangs, so i turn off the laptop, and let it cool down because it was getting a bit toasty. about 2 hours later i hop back on, and retry everything i did before, and nothing works. so i install lynx. search google for issues similar to mine and try the relevant solution i find... nothing works. so i pop in the xubuntu live disc, and copy its xorg config.
    cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf > /mnt/sda1/etc/X11/xorg_from_xubuntu
    reboot, rename my xorg config to x_backup and the xorg from xubuntu to xorg.conf
    i attept a startx with that and still nothing works, so i spent the next hour messing with my xorg config.
    any and all help is greatly appeciated.

    thats what i did, but when the driver i used from the ubuntu xorg config file didnt work, i wondered if it was a depth issue or if something was set up differently.
    right now i cant even get arch to boot to an ftp install, for some reason my computer is being a douche. i used the latest image the last time i installed arch, and it worked fine. but for some reason its acting wierd.
    i tried downloading and doing an ftp install with an earlier release of arch, but the inner workings of pacman were updated, and they got rid of the old way of obtaining package lists for the ftp install....
    pacman keeps trying to download a packages.txt file which is non existent so it doesnt even know what to do... i attempted to update pacman only from another terminal, which was successful, however when i run the ftp install again, it finds the database like it should, and tries to download an updated version of itself. it downloads but it cant locate the cache. its wierd, its like the update i ran took effect because now it knows what file to search for, but all of a sudden its acting like i deleted the cache folder.
    im trying unetbootin to see if it will work with the latest arch ftp disk. ill give an update in a few.

  • Sever issue with Xorg and Nvidia Drivers

    I run a 2.6.20 kernel with Xorg and Nvidia drivers all from arch rep on a Asus NV6200. Everything works fine, except one thing. When I exit X, the monitor shuts down imediatly. It wont start up at all, not even by manual startup. I cant understand what happens. The configuration is correct, is done with the correct settings for my video-card and monitor taken directly from the documentation. I cant use my X server at all since several days ... I checked the logs and there are no EE's. Anyway ... here is the log. Help anyone can help, I cant use X at all.

    No ... the problem is in the kernel that comes precompiled.
    I did this test.
    The first time I installed the kernel I unloaded nvidiafb since I dont like it.
    When I install nvidiafb back something strange happends. Nvidia module fails to load.
    The modprobe sais it cannot find the device nvidia.ko ... but it is there!
    So my best guess is, there is something with the kernel. Any ideas?
    Problem resolved, installed older driver

  • Any problems running a program compiled with SDK 1.4.2_14 with JRE 1.4.2_08

    Hi,
    Would there ever be a problem running a program compiled in Java 1.4.2_13 with JRE 1.4.2_08?
    Why or why not? No guesses please.
    Thanks

    No such hope. The alternative to testing is to review changes made to each version leading up to 14. This is spelled out in each version's Release Document. There are a lot of changes. Most will not affect your program. Each change is relatively well described, but your problem will be to decide if your program will be affected by the change.
    Or, do nothing, hope like hell that nothing breaks, and have an up-to-date copy of your resume.
    If someone came to me saying a program couldn't be tested, I'd have serious concerns for that person's future.

  • Any Problem Running Office 2010 SP2 with Project Server 2010 SP1?

    We are running Project Server 2010 SP1 April 2013 CU and the desktop clients have now been upgraded to SP2 October 13 CU. We are having issues with projects in local cache showing as checked out when they are not actually checked out on the server. I was
    wondering if it is problematic to run the desktop client on a newer service pack than the server and if it could cause this type of issue?

    Hello, Aaron.
    The answer is YES, you'll probably have some issues.
    I would recommend:
    Downgrade clients to match Server's version
    Upgrade Server to SP2+October '13 CU
    And my preferred:
    Upgrade Server and clients to SP2 + '14 April CU

  • A simple app to secure coldfusion pages - Running into an issue with Session

    Hello, I am testing out how to protect pages in coldfusion and have run into an issue when attempting to create a process by which users can log out.
    Essentially, I have three pages:
    Page A - The form that submits to Page B
    Page B - That checks the form.username and form.password against a database (works fine)
    Page C - Logout page (Which is where I am having an issue).
    Page C throws a "variable Session is undefined" error
    Here is the code on Page C:
    <cfset StructClear(Session)>
    <cflocation url="index.cfm">
    Here is the code on Page B:
    <cfif NOT IsDefined ("form.username")>
    <cflocation url="index.cfm" addtoken="No">
    </cfif>
    <cfquery name="test" datasource="cfdb">
    SELECT * FROM USERS
    WHERE USERNAME = '#FORM.username#'
    AND PASSWORD = '#FORM.password#'
    </cfquery>
    <!---<CFSET Session.LoggedIn = "1">
    <CFSET Session.FirstName = "#test.FirstName#">--->
    <CFIF test.RecordCount IS 0>
    <cflocation url="index.cfm" addtoken="No">
    <CFSET StructClear(Session)>
    <cfelse>
    <CFSET Session.LoggedIn = "1">
    <!---<cflocation url="test.cfm" addtoken="No">--->
    </cfif>
    <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
    <head>
    <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=utf-8" />
    <title>Untitled Document</title>
    </head>
    <body>
    <p><a href="logout.cfm">Log Out</a></p>
    <p> </p>
    <p> </p>
    <p><br>
      This content is protected.
    </p>
    </body>
    </html>
    As you can see, nothing fancy
    Now, I thought that the Session variable could be accessed by any page within a given browser instance, but I am obviously wrong.
    What do I need to do for Page C (my logout page to be able to access the session variable).
    Any guidance is greatly appreciated!

    1.
    “Variable Session is undefined” error comes up when you try to manipulate a session variable which does not exist, as at that point in time. To take care of possible empty session structures, it is good practice to check first if your session is defined.
    So you will have something like:
    <cfif isDefined("session")>
    <cfset StructClear(Session) />
    <cfelse>
    <cflocation url="index.cfm">
    </cfif>
    2.
    To enable you access your session variables from any page in your application, you need to enable session management in your Application.cfm or Application.cfc.
    cfm   <cfapplication sessionmanagement="Yes" />
    cfc        <cfcomponent>
    <cfset THIS.SessionManagement = "Yes" />
    </cfcomponent>

  • Has anyone run into an issue with their hotmail account being hacked on ios 6 ?

    Im noticing that I am getting strange MALIER DEAMON emailsadvising me that my email to whomever could not be sent.I have preiously run into this issue and it turned out my yahoo account had been hacked when I began getting those messages. Has this happened to anyone else?

    Try this:
    Go to System Preferences - Bluetooth. Delete the keyboard from the list of devices by pressing the "-" button. Take the batteries out of the keyboard and reinsert them. In Bluetooth Preferences press the '+" button to add the new device. If the keyboard begins to pair, click the word "pair" and type in the passcode. Press return. The keyboard is now paired.
    If the mouse is not pairing, try this: shut down the computer completely, unplug any USB mice, then turn off the power to the bluetooth mouse.  ONce the computer starts up again, wait for the pop-up looking for a mouse.  Turn on the power to the bluetooth mouse.  It should work normally now.

  • Odd visual issues with Xorg

    Hey all, recently, after restarting post-upgrade, X loads my DE (Gnome), but fails to display it correctly. There are also quite a few visual artifacts. I've been running Arch on it for months, and I saw nothing in the update that would have broken anything. And the only errors/warnings in my Xorg logs are regarding vesa, fbdev, a fonts directory and ACPI (See code below).

    A thumbnail of a screenshot is below. Should anyone require a higher resolution of the image, I will provide one on request. For the record, the mouse and some of the icons on the shell appear. The whole screen also flickers as if broken on mouse move.

    ConnorBehan wrote:Things to try: turning EXA / RenderAccel on and off, turning the Composite extension on and off, downgrading xorg-server or xf86-video-ati or whatever it was in the update that broke your display.
    Connor, thank you for your reply. EXA is a no-go. If by RenderAccel, you mean AccelDFS, it's also a no-go (if not, I don't know what you're referring to). I am also not familiar with the Composite extension. As far as I'm aware neither the driver or the xorg server were in the update which preceded the issue.
    As a final update, I managed to get GNOME into Fallback mode to see if that would help at all. Though it does display my background, which doesn't happen in standard mode anymore, the icons and shell are all still messed up. As I need my laptop to be in fairly functioning condition before Wednesday—and because I'm fairly sure this whole thing was due to a mistake I made somewhere along the way—I'm just going to do a clean install tonight.
    Thanks for all the help as always folks. Have a good night!

  • Issues with xorg and catalyst

    Hi.
    I was running an older version catalyst and xorg, but I upgraded everythin to try to get rid of an issue, and now the problem is much worse.
    For some reason the open source ati/radeon drivers now result in a very high load average, so I'm trying to get the catalyst drivers to work.
    However, I'm getting a floating point error.

    Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    I also tried disabling dri in xorg.conf, since dri appears in the backtrace for the error. That resulted in a segfault coming from something related to gl, so I disabled all acceleration, and got a black screen.
    Thanks!

    Was there a kernel update in a recent upgrade? If so, you need to rebuild the catalyst drivers.

  • IOS/AIR Running and Debugging Issues with Flash Builder

    I'm having very frustrating intermittent issues running and debugging Flex applications on an iPad 3rd generation retina with Flash Builder 4.7.
    Until this morning, launching on device using both standard and fast packaging worked pretty well. Every now and again, I'd get a dialog saying the packaging had completed successfully, but it hadn't. A quick change of the USB cable to another port on my iMac and it started working again. I'd also randomly get a "Error occurred while installing the application: Invalid <device> specified" error, which quickly went away.
    This morning, with the same code base, the same certificate and provisioning profiles, Flash Builder has only managed to successfully package and run my application on my iPad twice and I must have attempted to launch fifty or so times. Standard packaging, fast packaging and with and without the useLegacyAOT.
    Does this sound like a Flash Builder issue? Is my iMac USB driver dodgy? Has anybody else experienced this?
    Any help greatly welcomed!
    Thanks,
    Simon

    Hi I have had this problem sometimes. With my Mac Book Pro.
    Try making a new flex application and see if you have the same result.
    When I had this problem I created a new Application and copied every thing from my other application.
    This my be a hard solution but I don't no any others.

  • Installation of Arch (64) in VirtualBox, issues with Xorg

    Hi friends,
    I want to install Arch (64) in VirtualBox, recent versions both.
    I did the main installation procedure.
    But now I want to install X.
    I did "pacman -S xorg", and "Xorg -configure", and copied the newly created xorg-file to /etc/X11. It correctly recognizes "vboxvideo" as the video driver.
    Now the problem is this: the first time I do "xinit", it works, but after exiting, and commanding "xinit" again, I get a blank screen and a freeze.
    After exiting X the first time, it tells me about problems with DRI and DRM.
    (Sorry I can't insert the files here at the moment, because I don't have the Guest Additions installed yet.)
    Hope to hear from you,
    Daniel

    Can you please post the error messages it gives you?

  • FF 3.6 AND 5 on same Mac, 1 profile - can I uninstall 5 without causing problems running 3.6 or with the profile?

    I upgraded from 3.6.16 to 5, but don't like how 5 handles tabs (auto reloading 'problem loading' tabs when internet connection is reestablished). So I installed 3.6 in a separate folder, e.g. both versions are on this computer. I went back to using 3.6, and let it upgrade to either 3.6.18 or 19 (don't recall which & it's not open right now). I'm having problems with it using too much CPU & Memory, and not sure if that's a difference between 3.6.16 & 3.6.18/19, or if having 5 on the same computer even if closed could be causing the problem.
    Can I uninstall 5 without causing problems with the 3.6 version and the single profile?

    If you haven't tried this, give it a try. It worked for me, hopefully it will work for you. In your version 3 firefox, disable all extensions, I had two plugins (doubletwist and joost, disable those if you have them). Then install firefox 5 by overwriting your version 3 firefox. It should work fine after that. I tried everything before, I gave that a last ditch shot. Oh yeah, before you install firefox 5, clear your cache of everything just to be sure.
    Hopefully that helps.

  • Iphone 4s. Windows 8.1 hp laptop. Itunes does not see my phone when I plug it in or launch itunes. My other computer sees it no problem, Is there compatibility issues with win 8.1 and itunes? Very frustrating...

    Need help getting itunes to recognize my 4s, my older other computers have no issues. I have hp 2000 with windows 8.1..

    That didn't work for me....I have done every concievable action to resolve this....now I am getting pissy......Went through all the suggestions on the support page....I am going absolutely nuts here, uninstall, reinstall, set this default to that....NO ONE KNOWS WHY THIS IS HAPPENING OR IT WOULD BE ADDRESSED ALREADY!!!!!!
    Sitting right next to my new laptop is the old one that started out with XP on it. Has Win7 and itunes fires right up. I called my brother, he doesn't have apple products. He just bought a new laptop and did the 8.1 upgrade and guess what? Itunes still won't recognise my 4S....
    ANY FEEDBACK WOULD BE GREAT. However, keep in mind I have done everything except throw the laptop and the phone.....

  • Gallery problems and photo export issues with all images JPG Raw damaged.

    I'm starting to panic. I trusted Aperture 3 and upgraded entire library from Aperture 2.0.
    Yesterday I uploaded new project from a photoshoot. and today is gone. Just like that. I did some export already before from that project so I know that it was there.
    Yesterday I had couple crashes. But it should be saved??
    Now I have serious problem. I export any Jpegs from Aperture. and when I want to process them in CS4 photomatix etc I get this http://www.flickr.com/photos/procekim/4360611822/
    It does it in 32 and 64 bit? What is the problem? I can expot JPG and raw and get same result. entire gallery from 2000 to 2010 same issue.
    I'm badly hurt!!!!!!!!!!!! do you have same problem??

    this gave me a scare. I deleted preferences + everything in pro applications. I deleted Aperture and reinstall everything from the disk. Updated library and now it works. I even get my lost project back. It remembered my Places, but not faces, strange.
    I have no idea what happened. But from now on I double copy files.

  • I frequently have to remove and re-insert the SIM in order to access the internet. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Is the issue with the IPAD or the SIM card?

    I frequently have to remove and re-insert the SIM card in order to access the internet. Has anyone else experienced this?  Is it a problem with the IPAD2 or with the SIM card?

    Could be the SIM card, the iPad, or both.
    Start with replacing the SIM card.
