Problems setting up Mail in Snow Leopard

Just downloaded Snow Leopard and when I lauch Mail and go through the set-up, it gets to the optimizing part and crashes/closes. Help!!!

Perhaps you have a corrupted Mail preferences file.  If you are familiar with using the command line from the Terminal application, I would suggest you try this:
plutil -lint /Users/<your user name>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
My file was fine, so I received this response:
/Users/<your user name>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist: OK
Your results may vary if the plist file for Mail on your machine contains syntax errors.

  • I am having problems working with Mail in Snow Leopard

I have an iMac running 10.6.8. I was having problems booting up the computer, which I was able to overcome running Applejack. Then I noticed Mail malfunctioning. Followingg describes the problems:
    1. Cannot open  "About Mail".
    2. Cnannot open Preferences; unable to check account settings.
    3. Do receive most of incoming emails. For no known reason, outgoing servers go "Ofline". So, cannot send outgoing emails.
Will appreciate suggestions for fixing these problems.

OK, so that's a marginal machine - dont spend TOO much on it. Solid, btu i think, for example, can;t run Lion or later OSes.
I have not worked on a modern imac myself. I'd go to google, bing or your favourite search engine and search "hard drive replacement Imac intel" and see what you find re: instructions.
In general though, its not all that complicated. Your manual may in fact tell you how to access it mechanically.  If you have, as i think you do a "SATA" (serial ATA) hard drive, just buy one, open it up, remove the old, plug in the new and close it.
Of course, first do a complete abckup and MAKE SURE YOU CAN BOOT FROM THE BACKUP.
A drive shoudl be < $100.  One of the most helpful, althoug not chepaest vendors, is OWC (Other World Computing). They can actually ehlp you with instructiosn and what works in your model.  If oyu have questions, i suggest using a hgih service vendor such as them.  no affiliation.

  • How do I fix Mail in Snow Leopard where I cannot send emails from my account to another account I've set up in Mail, but the reverse works fine?

I have a problem with Mail in Snow Leopard in that I cannot set up two email accounts for myself and my wife with the same ISP and have them operate properly.  I've set up the accounts in strict accordance with my ISP's instructions for setting up email accounts on Mac Mail but I cannot send an email from my account to my wife's without a drop-down message appearing that Mail 'cannot send the email from this server.  Please edit the server list'.  No amount of tweaking appears to work.  Applecare consultants have so far been unable to get it to work and a recent visit to the local Genius Bar in the Apple Store was fruitless also.  My ISP's help line was unable to solve the problem even with a supervisor level consultant.  The ISP concluded it was some kind of 'bug' in Mail.
I could send emails from my wife's account to mine, but not vice versa; I could send emails to other addresees without any problem and I can send emails from my account to my wife's using the ISP's webmail.
Does anyone please have a solution to my problem?  At the moment we're operating one account (mine) on my Macbook and my wife's is set up on her iPad2.  As we prefer to use the Macbook for storage and (using Time Machine) for back-up of our data, the two accounts on separate machines is a nuisance.
Another factor is that I prefer to control when I download emails and set my preferences accordingly.  One of the so-called 'fixes' that were tried wound up downloading emails regardless of settings, even after removing my wife's account; the matter was remedied only after I had removed all accounts form Mail and started afresh from scratch.

You'll have to pardon my ignorance of some  computer terminology; I'm a retired manager and not a computer technician, hence my muddling up of client and server terminology.
Re your comment about Port 339: I did qualify this with (?).  As I wrote, it all happened at lightining speed and the guy at the Genius Bar didn't bother explaining what he was doing.  Port designation contained 3s and 9s to the best of my recollection.
That said, you seem to be spot on re setting up a 'dummy' client in Mail.  I set it up as you suggested and I can send to and receive from this client without a problem.  You appear to have identified the solution, notwithstanding the claims of the ISP's 'experts'.
The next problem I have now is sorting out my wife's mailbox that is so troublesome whenever I set it up on Mail.
All the other set-up advice to date yielded a similar result; inability to send from my account to her inbox.  Perhaps deleting her details from the account altogether and setting them up again from scratch may be the solution and I shall try that in due course.  The impediment that I have with this at the moment is that my ISP admits that it has 'a technical problem with its email servers' and some of its related web pages that prevent my doing this myself.  I will have to go through the telephone 'help' line and ask the technician to set it up at their end on my instructions.  This has some disadvantages in that I have to divulge the password to the account to the operator rather than keeping it anonymous by doing it on-line.   You may have solved the problem, but until I can successfully sort out a working mailbox for my wife i cannot definitively say so.
Many thanks for your perseverance.  You've made more sense than anyone else so far and that deserves some points, surely?

    Hi Jim,
Depending on the customer feedback, it works fine. Apple Mail the client that comes with OSX supports standard protocols (POP3, IMAP, SMTP), these are all supported by Exchange 2010.
If you're running Mac OS 10.4 Tiger or Mac OS 10.5 Leopard, you can still use the Mac Mail App to connect to your account. However, you need to connect to your account without using IMAP or POP.
If you're running Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard or Mac OS 10.7 Lion, you can use the Mail program included with those releases to connect to your email account automatically using an Exchange account.
When you use Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard or Mac OS 10.7 Lion and connect using an Exchange account, you can use features that aren't available to users who connect through IMAP or POP, including iCal and Address Book.

  • Apple Mail on Snow Leopard 1.6.8

I'm aware this subject isn't new but still I find no solutions ....
Hence, very many thanks to anyone who will help me to solve this substantial problem
Since the unfortunate invention of Icloud my Apple Mail on Snow Leopard 1.6.8 no longer work properly.
    My machine:
    Model Name:          Mac Pro
    Model Identifier:          MacPro4,1
    Processor Name:          Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Processor Speed:          3,32 GHz
    RAM 16 GB (Apple Original)
Mail should take care of my me.com accounts, but I also have other accounts located elsewhere with a different suffix (.it, co.uk)
I tried to set up Snow Leopard Mail following every single help tread here and at other websites. None of which seems to work properly, and the variety of "helps" simply tells me there is no "sound" system to use Snow Leopard with the current Apple Email set-up.
Yet "randomly" Mail will stop loading my "me.com" mail opening an error message telling me the "me.com" certificate is no longer trustable.ù
I instructed Apple Mail to "trust" the certificate, but this option does not work, or at least only works randomly.
Mails also never recognizes and loads messages from my other suffix adresses. It enters in an endless connection asking to verify either my User or pass, to finally put these accounts offline. Using Safari with my user and pass (the same as in Apple Mail) everythings works well.
More: if I am working on something else (Long Photoshop Actions, Final Cut Pro rendering and more), this window message halts everything.
This problem is serious, as I usually performed this work at night. or when I don't need to stare at a screen doing nothing.
I erased my computer with the 32 zero pass options and reinstalled the original Snow Leo system (MAC OS X 10.6.2) and this problem vanishes.
As soon as I update with the Combo Upgrade the problem begins again.
My upgrades are always "fresh updates" both as a direct update from the apple menu/Software update, or downloading the combo as dmg to then install.
The result is exactly the same.
I received a fresh copy from the local Apple Store in case my original had some magical problems, but nothing changed.
Yet I can't simply use SL 10.6.2 (the original software I got with the Machine) as many programs I paid for require the latest Snow Leopard.
While I could use another drive with SL 10.6.2, just for the Mail, is really a problem to reboot, to reboot again to continue my work.
In my heart I certainly believe email these days is a "public service" especially after paying thousand dollars over the years, and Apple policy to force user to purchase their latest machines and or, waste time to reconstruct their previous work to adpat it to their industrial policy is simply not fair.
While I understand and support advances in technology and so on, I believe this going forward shouldn't be done at the expenses of the customers, but "freedom of choice" is parts of all constitution as introduced centuries ago in the US.
I read in various site Apple was planning a Snow Leopard 10.6.9 version, but so far nothing happened. Maybe this project was dismissed.
Loosing important emails is a superior problem for my work.
I "have" to use Snow Leopard because I need the Rosetta function Apple discontinued in Lion and Mountain Lion.
Some readers might dislike this post, yet I used Apple since Apple II, I bought at least 100 machines since, I went through the various software/hardware changes, with ease. I believe my current anger is legitimate.
    Can someone please help?

you can save a little time - since Mail is one of the Optional Install items found by running the same-named installer within the folder on the DVD. you'll still need the 10.6.7 combo afterwards.

  • Mail in Snow Leopard (starting from scratch, fresh install, POP gone?)

Where is a good manual/FAQ/Help file that explains how to setup POP gmail accounts in the new Mail in 10.6??
Did a fresh install on a new machine, and can't for the life of me figure out how to set it up (keeps selecting IMAP by default, no matter what I do, then when I setup a POP account it just sits there).
How come it worked in 10.3, 10.4, and in 10.5 then in 10.6 it just acts all goofy and won't connect? Is this the definition of 'snappier'? I think so, because I'm about to.
    Thanks.

Like you I did a fresh install and when setting up my gmail accounts found the only available option of setup to be IMAP. I found the fix to this ANNOYING ISSUE.
Basically the auto-setup assistant that automatically starts in Mail w/ snow leopard looks to see if you enter "gmail.com" as your selected service and AUTOMATICALLY configures it to use IMAP instead of POP.
Now I have tried going in and disabling IMAP and entering all the correct POP settings after the wizard completes setup but I could never get a functioning connection.
The solution is to click the + sign to add an account but instead of butting "@gmail.com" change your address to "@yahoo.com". Type in the correct password and click continue. It will attempt to check the connection but will fail, click continue anyway.
From here you will have to change the POP settings from the defaults for yahoo to those of gmail. Remember those are pop.gmail.com; username is your ENTIRE email address. Ensure everything is right and click continue.
Again change the SMTP setting from those of yahoo to those of gmail's. Remember smtp.gmail.com!
Click continue and finish the setup. Once the account is setup you will have to change your address from @yahoo.com to @gmail.com and you are finished. Your account should connect and work just like it always did.

  • Tiger Mail on Snow Leopard?

I have been using Tiger's Mail program as my main mail application. Now I need to get my mail on my Macbook Pro.
Problem is: Mail in Tiger has an option under "Edit", of "Paste as HTML". This works beautifully.
In Snow Leopard this option has been removed, and although "Paste" does sort of work (with adding attachments for images), I get my quoted message mangled in replies from recipients of my html mails.
Question: Can I instal and use Tiger Mail on Snow Leopard, and how should I go about it?

You had me very excited for a moment there, Tom, when I saw how elegantly Safari does this, but...
I do my html in Pagespinner, then preview in Safari. Safari > File > Mail Contents of this Page, does not deliver my images. (I suppose I could link to image files on a web server...)
On the other hand, in Tiger, I select all, and copy in Safari, then Edit > Paste as html, in Mail. And my friends receive a perfect html email, with images and formatting.
I just got my little G4 iBook back, and Tiger with it, so once again, I can do my thing , but I would dearly love a similarly elegant solution in Snow Leopard.

  • Mail  for snow leopard

is there a new mail that you must have to run mail on snow leopard?

Right, I forgot, how silly of me. Once you set up an email account on a machine it's set up forever. Even after a fresh install on a new machine. What was I thinking.

Try resetting the SMC Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) - Apple Support
and PRAM How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support
If those don't help you can try a cleaning disc or a quick shot of compressed air. Chances are that your drive has failed, join the club it's not all that uncommon. You can either have it replaced or purchase an inexpensive external drive. Don't buy the cute little Apple USB Superdrive, it won't work on macs with internal drives working or not.

  • Problems with Photoshop CS4 on Snow Leopard 10.6.8

I just upgraded to Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and now my Photoshop CS4 is constantly crashing on me.  Adobe was no help.  Is there anything I can do to fix this?  I don't want to purchase CS5 just to prevent this from happening. I had no problems with CS4 w 10.5.8.  I also did a software update on CS4.  Help please!!

    "...Adobe was no help...."
Meaning what exactly? CS4 should work with some problems. Google, "cs4 and snow leopard" and read the issues. You are also not alone if you look the the right side of this web page under, "More Like This" you'll others with the same issue.

No problems when i used with Snow Leopard. I upgraded: Now Kreonika is not happy. Not happy at all!

In cases like this, if you have an Apple store near by, they will most likely install the OS free of charge for you, if you can't bring your Apple ID along to prove you've paid for it.
Would that work out for you?

You can usually get those from the original grey installer discs that came with your Mac without bothering with Pacifist. Look for an 'installed bundled software' or similarly named item on one of those discs, generally the #1 disc. Run that & the original versions of those apps that were bundled with your Mac will be installed. Software Update will let you know if there is an update you can download for them (but of course that won't include an upgrade to a more recent major version, which you would have to buy separately).
