Problems with installation of Microsoft Office 2008

Trying to install Microsoft Office on my MacBook has completely messed things up: When I tried to install updates, the installer froze while trying to install SP1 Update. I restarted the computer and it now has a black bar on the right and left side of the screen. I can move things, so they're behind the black bars, but everything else seems to be 'squeezed', so e.g. the apple logo is still withing the visible screen. I've tried removing Office and installing it again - once again it freezes while attempting to update.
Office works fine, but the bars are pretty annoying!

Since you are asking about a Microsoft product, why don't you ask your question on the Microsoft forum?

  • Problems with saving/printing Microsoft Office documents

Did a security update yesterday (2/1/12).  After that I can no longer save or print any Microsoft Office document.  How can this be fixed?

    To access your user library
Hold down the option key while using the Finder "Go To Folder" command. Enter ~`/Library. Delete the .plist(s) for the application.
If you prefer to make your user library permanently visible, use the Terminal command found below.
    http://osxdaily.com/2011/07/04/show-library-directory-in-mac-os-x-lion/
You might want to bookmark the command. I had to use it again after I installed 10.8.2. I have also been informed that if you drag the user library to Finder it will remain visible.

  • After migration to new iMac - problems with Microsoft office 2008 using multiple users

I migrated my data from my old Imac to my new Imac.  On the new Imac I created multiple logins for my kids.  My microsoft office 2008 programs will not open.  I keep getting the "Customer Experience Improvement Program" screen which cycles through, checks for update then closes never allowowing me to access the program.  Please help!!

Reference your first post - I download and use dmg files, so either I'm lucky or they are supported.
I would try the disk reinstall since at this point there doesn't seem to be many options.
Do you have a backup? You could restore the Microsoft Office 2008 folder.

  • Is Microsoft Office 2008 compatible with OS X Yosemite?

Is Microsoft Office 2008 compatible with OS X Yosemite? My Word, Excel and PowerPoint files won't open since updating my OS.

Your Office installation sounds corrupted. I would reinstall Office, but you must first do a complete removal of it. I did not write this note, but it should apply to Office 2008. You will just need to locate the version equivalents at the MS site. You might also check inside the Office 2008 folder for an uninstaller.
Your MS Office 2011 may have become corrupted.  Reinstalling Office 2011 can address problems that you may be experiencing.
First - find your Office 2011 install disc with the product key # - and only then remove Office according to MS instructions
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2398768.
Or go here to DianefromOregon's site for help removing Office 2011: http://www.officeformachelp.com/2012/12/office-for-mac-2011-remove-office/.
    Then Reinstall from DVD
    Then enter your Product #
After successfully reinstalling Office 2011, update your Office product using the Software update within Office called Microsoft Update or going to the Help menu within Word or Excel or PowerPoint and select Update.
It may take a few times before you get to final upgrade to current Office version.
It should be 14.4.8 as of current date.

Or you can do all of this manually:
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, EasyFind, instead.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
        1. AppZapper
        2. AppDelete
        3. Automaton
        4. Hazel
        5. AppCleaner
        6. CleanApp
        7. iTrash
        8. Amnesia
        9. Uninstaller

  • Microsoft Office 2008 not opening after installation...

    Hi there,
Let me run through the steps leading to this error. A couple of months ago I downloaded a trial of Microsoft Office 2008. It eventually expired and I left it on my computer. A few days ago I bought a license from Microsoft for Office 2008 in the attempt to get a free upgrade to Office 2011 before Nov. 30, 2010. After I bought the license, I was emailed a download link for 2008. I uninstalled the version I had already (Not knowing I could just enter the product key). I ran through the installation, though saw a weird "Product Key" window inside the installer before I finished installing. This product key wasn't even close to the one I got when I purchased my license. I finished the installment, and a update to Office 2008 12.2.7 appeared. I accepted and it downloaded. After that I opened Microsoft Word from my dock, and I was asked for my product key. I entered it and I everything seemed fine until Word officially opened. A window appeared telling me Microsoft Word wasn't installed correctly, and I could follow a link explaining on how to reinstall or uninstall office. I opened the link, and it told me about a known issue with Service Pack 2 (SP2) that didn't allow some xml to launch with all office applications. To note, this error happened with all Office applications except for messenger, project templates, and my day. Everything else showed the error message. Back to the xml issue page. I was told to download an update to 12.2.1. Which is very redundant, because I had updated to 12.2.7! I downloaded the update, opened it, it found the disk... an error appeared telling me it couldn't find the proper value or files. Basically it meant, 12.2.1 was pointless to install because I had updated to 12.2.7. I decided to uninstall this version and re-download. I did this many times after, and the same stuff happened. After the 3rd time I re-download Office 2008, I uninstalled and nothing seemed to be uninstalling. The uninstaller found no indication that Office 2008 was on the machine. I opened AppZapper and dealt with the installation that way. So, if anyone with the knowledge of fixing this, please comment and help me. New trimester in school next week, and need a Office badly.

Just because Office Mac is written by Microsoft, doesn't mean an issue with it falls under the category of "Windows Compatibility" as there's nothing "Windows" about it.
Regardless, Microsoft's forums are the best place to get your answer, as it's their product and they have Microsoft appointed "MVPs" there to assist.

Just adding to what CSound has said.
Pages and Numbers will change Word and Excel documents when they open and close them.
Sometimes the change is subtle and sometimes not. With the latest versions of Pages and Numbers, more likely not.
So don't think you are going to work with MsOffice files without problems. You will always have something not right and in some cases really annoyingly not right. Like having all the text from Pages appear bold in MsWord, or page breaks in the wrong place or some objects and graphics not appearing in one or the other.
If working between different Operating Systems and MsOffice files, I also recommend LibreOffice. It opens and saves nearly all file formats. Unfortunately not .pages or numbers. Yet. The folks at LibreOffice are busy adding to it all the time, and making sure it works in all Operating systems, Mac, Windows and Linux and they are promising iOS as well soon.

  • Microsoft Office 2008 Won't Open With OS X 10.9.4

I updated to 'Mavericks' about a month ago, had no issue whatsoever. I have been using Microsoft Office 2008 daily, a few times a day with no issues. This morning I tried to open it and it will not open, nor will 'Excell' or 'Power Point'. 'Entourage' opens fine.  I keep getting an error notice "Mircrosoft Error Reporting" Any ideas how I can fix this? Thank you in advance.

Is anybody going to get back to me? I have done everything from run my fontbook to try lunching it through spotlight. Then I went into my terminal and re-entered the sudo code - then when that did not work, I removed the program and reinstalled it - to no avail. None of the links below help. So if someone can correspond directly with information, that would help.

  • HT1338 microsoft office 2008 is not working with Lion

My Microsoft office 2008 is not working, it gives me a message that this program is in use in another computer on my network.
Is there any way to fix this issue?

That is the copy protection scheme that Microsoft employs. Each Office program sends out it's license code to your network. When you start an Office program, it looks for other Office programs with same code operating and prevents you from using it.

Thanks for the tip.  Went through the process on Microsoft's site and the files that were causing the issue were the com.microsoft files in Library-Preferences.  Removed all of those, then opened an Office 2011 application; had to go through some basic setup questions the first time, but I no longer get prompted upgrade 2008.

  • G5 with Panther (10.3.9) but I need to install Microsoft Office 2008!

I'm working in a office where I use a G5 with Panther (10.3.9). I'm wanting to install Microsoft Office 2008 on this computer, however, it requires 10.4.9 or later, which I guess would mean an upgrade to Tiger? Anyone know a way to bypass this install, someone suggested possibly installing in Classic? Any help is greatly appreciated!

The minimum requirements won't allow you to install Office 2008 on anything less that what it states. That's normally due to changes in later versions of the OS, or newer features that don't exist in older OS versions that the program relies on to run.

You can hook up an USB drive formatted as FAT32 or NTFS(read-only), but it can't read exFAT drives or boot Windows from an USB drive.

  • Microsoft Office 2008

hi there - my Brother purchased Microsoft Office 2008 for mac and gave me one of the licence codes, however - the code that I used to register my copy is apparently being used by someone else and so Microsoft Office has stopped working.
I've now bought my own Microsoft Office but am having some difficulties registering this copy with the new licence codes - do I uninstall the old version? and also is there anyway of 'unregistering' the old version as it is now completely useless...
    Many thanks.

hi, thanks for the prompt replies!!
I'va managed to uninstall it fine - the problem is that when I use my new CD to install the fresh copy of MS Office, I never get the opportunity to enter the 'clean' product key that came on the CD sleeve - I presume that this is because my Mac still thinks that I'm using the 'old' product key, and consequently I'm back to square one as even though this is a fresh purchase it still thinks that I have an invalid product key...
    Thanks
I found this which might be helpful:
    Microsoft Office 2008
Unlike earlier versions of Microsoft Office for Mac OS X, Office 2008 does not remove its serial number, or "CD Key," when you run the "Remove Office" tool. That tool is still found on the installation disc and installed inside the "Microsoft Office 2008" folder on your hard disk, but it doesn't have the secondary function of deserializing Office 2008.
Instead, you will need to remove the following two files to have the same effect.
    ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008/Microsoft Office 2008 Settings.plist
    /Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Office/OfficePID.plist
You may navigate to these locations with the Mac OS X Finder by selecting Go > Go to Folder, and pasting in the following two paths (one at a time):
    ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/Office 2008/
    /Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Office/
Removal of the OfficePID.plist file may require administrator privileges.
    Reference:
    http://www.rit.edu/its/services/desktop_support/mac/msofficeremoveserial.html
I would then add that you are most likely better off installing NeoOffice or OpenOffice, both of which are close to 100% MS Office compatible and both are free downloads and best of all, they work flawlessly and do not require any keys or registering, etc.

  • Trouble Installing Microsoft Office 2008 10.8

Getting a headache trying to find a clear answer on this -- if I can't install Office Entourage PowerPoint Excel on 10.8.3 in 2013, is it possible?
I just did an Erase and clean fresh install of Mountain Lion 10.8.3 (late 2011 MacBook Pro).
I have Microsoft Office Mac 2008 Upgrade (not worried about the Upgrade issue), however
    My installer is version 12.0
To get to current 12.3.6 — I will need to run three updates manually (the Auto Update feature didn't work the  last time I installed under 10.7 so I expect to do the same under 10.8):
    12.1
    12.2
    12.3
I read there may be a problem running the three service pack updates manually because they may not work in the Apple Store Auto Update Software Update routines....
Has anyone done this or know of a clear source to confirm what to expect, how to install and update Office 2008?
    PLEASE ADVISE

Figured out how to install Microsoft Office 2008 Upgrade 12.0 onto a fresh start-from-scratch clean 10.8x Mountain Lion install -- it is possible with no problems and here are instructions how to do it:
    Manually download the following updaters:
    Service Pack 1, 12.1.0: Office2008-1210UpdateEN.dmg
    Service Pack 2, 12.2.0: Office2008-1220UpdateEN.dmg
Service Pack 3, 12.3.6 (or latest)
Run the Office 2008 installer from the install disk.
When the Upgrade prompts you for an eligible version, insert your full retail install disk, and point the updater to that disk's root folder — note my full retail Office 98 disk didn't work, but my Office 2004 full retail disk did the trick.
Run each Service Pack as needed.
After all are updates are manually ran, then run the Office software update.
I can confirm Office 2008 installed on Mountain Lion and appears to be working as expected on my Late 2011 MacBook Pro, 10.8.3.
Lanny& Barney-15E THANK YOU FOR THE CORRECT ANSWERS!

  • Microsoft Office 2008 Won't Install On Snow Leopard

So I installed Snow Leopard last night, and everything's been going smoothly; that is, until I needed to reinstall Microsoft Office 2008. I uninstalled it when it was buggy, as I figured it was a simple issue that could be fixed with a reinstall, but now it refuses to even install.
I can get through the installer, up until the point where it tells me to select the components to install, and then when I click "Install"- nothing happens. Here's a video of exactly what's happening, to better diagnose the problem. (http://www.gynecologistcobra.net/misc/msinstallbug.html)Anyone care to help me figure out what's going on?
When I put the disk back in to install Rosetta, I got through it, until the end where it asked me to install. When I click it, the button greys out, then just goes back to normal and nothing installs, just like above. I don't know what's going on.

I can't. Whenever I click the lock to make changes in Accounts, nothing happens. Everything stays just like it was.
