Procedure to return many rows

I have managed to get a single row procedure to function as i wish however am having trouble when i would like to incorporate a select statement that will return more than one row.
CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE p_count_houses
(v_ten_type IN tbl_accommodation.ten_type%type,
v_accommodation_id OUT tbl_accommodation.accommodation_id%type)
IS
v_temp_accommodation tbl_accommodation.accommodation_id%type;
BEGIN
     SELECT count(accommodation_id)
     INTO v_temp_accommodation
     FROM tbl_accommodation
     WHERE ten_type = v_ten_type
     AND furnished = 1;
v_accommodation_id := v_temp_accommodation;
END p_count_houses;
works as i wish
however if i was to remove the count(...) and simply select accommodation_id i would then get an error to do with the fetch. So how would i go about doing what i need to do
Thanks

Not sure whether you want to return the multiple values through the argument or in the return clause. Probably one of the following may help:
1. Return through the collection, assume that you are expecting multiple rows from the query:
Create or Replace Type v_Acc is Table of tbl_accommodation.accommodation_id%type;
CREATE OR REPLACE PROCEDURE p_count_houses
(v_ten_type IN tbl_accommodation.ten_type%type,
v_accommodation_id OUT v_Acc)
IS
BEGIN
SELECT accommodation_id
Bulk Collect INTO v_accommodation
FROM tbl_accommodation
WHERE ten_type = v_ten_type
AND furnished = 1;
END p_count_houses;
The result will be copied into the collection, and the collection will be returned through the argument. Please see the changes in the code.
2. Return using the PIPELINED and PIPE ROW in the function.
Create or Replace Type v_Acc is Table of tbl_accommodation.accommodation_id%type;
CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION p_count_houses
(v_ten_type IN tbl_accommodation.ten_type%type)
Return v_Acc PIPELINED as
Cursor C1 is
SELECT accommodation_id
FROM tbl_accommodation
WHERE ten_type = v_ten_type
AND furnished = 1;
Begin
For Rec1 in C1
Loop
Pipe Row (Rec1.accommodation_id);
End Loop;
End p_count_houses;
To see the result in SQL prompt, issue the following command:
Select * from Table( p_count_houses( value_for_v_ten_type ));
The result will be something like this:
COLUMN_VALUE
1
2
3
4
5

  • The simplest way for plsql procedure to return multiple rows

    Hi,
    What is the simplest way for plsql procedure to return multiple rows (records). There are many combination of ways to do it but I am looking for a solution that is appropriate for plsql beginners. Many solutions use cursors, cursor variables, collections and more that kind of things that are complex on the face of it. Is it somehow possible to achieve the same with less effort?
    Sample query would be: SELECT * FROM EMPLOYEES;
    I want to use returned rows in APEX to compose APEX SQL(in that context plsql) report.
    It is enough to use just SELECT * FROM EMPLOYEES query in APEX but I want to use plsql procedure for that.
    Thank you!

    Hi,
    It depends :-).
    With +...that is appropriate for plsql beginners...+ in mind... it still depends!
    The list of techniques (ref cursors, cursor variables, collections, arrays, using explict SQL) you have referenced in your post can be made to work. but...
    +Is it somehow possible to achieve the same with less effort?+ Less effort : That needs to be defined (measured). Especially in the context of pl/sql beginners (who is a beginner?) .
    What is the level of "programming experience" ?
    What is the level of understanding of "Relational Result set" as processible in Oracle?
    If you are looking for
    Process_the_set_of rows_in APEX () kind of capabilitywhich "abstracts/hides" relation database from developers when working on relation database, it may not be the best approach (at least strategically). Because I believe it already is abstracted enough.
    I find REF CUROSOR most effective for such use, when the "begginer" has basic understanding of processing SQL result set .
    So in a nut shell, the techniques (that you already are familiar with) are the tools available. I am not aware of any alternative tools (in pure Oracle) that will simplify / hide basics from develpers.

  • How to execute an Oracle stored procedure which returns many records?

    I have two synchronous scenarios XI<->PI<->JDBC, where JDBC is receiver adapter.
    Each scenario runs a different stored procedure in Oracle database.
    The first stored procedure returns only one record, the second stored procedure returns many records, which come from a cursor.
    In the first scenario I executed the stored procedure following the directions of Help SAP page and works perfectly.

    Think It doesnt matter either cursor or result set. Try to get the response back from JDBC and see what are the fields it exactly populating.
    In Procedure you can able to find the columns selecting in Cursors. Give those columns in the DT.
    File - JDBC (Execute-- Procedure)
    To get the response
    JDBC_respose -  File
    Correct me if im wrong.

  • HOW TO EXECUTE A STORE PROCEDURE THAT RETURN MULTIPLE ROWS FROM A QUERY

    I NEED TO CREATE AND USE A STORE PROCEDURE THAT IS GOING TO DO A SELECT STATEMENT AN THE RESULT OF THE SELECT STATEMENT IS RETURN IN SOME WAY TO THE REQUESTER.
    THIS CALL IS MADE BY AN EXTERNAL LANGUAGE, NOT PL/SQL OR FORMS APPLICATION. USING FOR EXAMPLE ODBC AND VISUAL BASIC. WHAT I NEED TO DO IS ADD A DATA ACCESS LAYER TO MY APPLICATION AND I ALREADY HAVE IT DONE FOR MS SQL SERVER, BUT I NEED THE SAME FUNCTIONALITY ACCESSING AN ORACLE DATABASE.
    FLOW:
    1. VB CREATE A ODBC CONNECTION TO A ORACLE DATABASE
    2. VB EXECUTE A STORE PROCEDURE
    3. THE STORE PROCEDURE RETURNS TO THE VB APPLICATION THE RESULT OF THE QUERY THAT IS INSIDE OF THE STORE PROCEDURE.(I.E. THE STORE PROCEDURE IS A BASIC SELECT, NOTHING COMPLEX)
    4. VB DISPLAY THE RESULT IN A GRID
    FOR SURE I CAN DO THE SELECT DIRECTLY TO ORACLE, BUT FOR PERFORMANCE REASONS AND SCALABILITY, I'LL LIKE IT TO DO IT USING A STORE PROCUDURES
    IS THIS POSIBLE?, HOW?
    THANKS

    Certainly, it's possible. First, define a stored procedure that includes an OUT parameter which is a REF CURSOR. Then, call the stored procedure via ODBC omitting the OUT parameter from the list of parameters. IT will automatically be returned as a result set. Syntax for both is below...
    CREATE PROCEDURE foo (inParam in varchar2, resultSet OUT REF CURSOR )
    In ODBC:
    {call foo( 'someData' )}

  • How to execute procedure returning data rows from sql plus

    Even if i get the result set into the cursor, do i have to do normal fetch into all the coumn variables within a loop
    But suppose no of columns in my result set varies depending on a parameter to the stored procedure.
    Is there any straightforward way to retrieve all the data irrespective of no of columns in the result set.There is no such thing as a "+result set+". Oracle does not create a temporary data set in memory that contains the results of your query. What would happen if this result set is a million rows and is too large to fit into memory? Or there are a 100 clients each with a 100,000 row result set?
    This is not scalable. You will be severely limited in the number and sizes of these "+result sets+" that can be created in server memory.
    A cursor is in fact a "program" that is created by compiling the SQL source code that you provide. This source code is parsed and compiled into what Oracle calls an execution plan. This is nothing but a series of instructions that the cursor will execute in order to return the rows required.
    Thus the result set is actually the output from a cursor (a program). Likewise, bind variables are the input parameters to this program.
    All SQLs are parsed and compiled as cursors and stored in the SQL Shared Pool. Oracle gives you handle in return to use to address this cursor - bind values to it, execute it, describe the output structure returned by the cursor, and fetch the output from the cursor.
    On the client side, this handle is used in different ways. In PL/SQL alone, this cursor handle can be used as an implicit cursor (you do not even see or use the cursor handle in your PL/SQL code). Or you can use a PL/SQL cursor variable. Or a DBMS_SQL cursor variable. Or a reference cursor variable.
    Why so many different client structures for the very same SQL cursor handle returned by Oracle? Because to allow you, the programmer, all kinds of different features and flexibility.
    The ref cursor feature is the ability to pass this cursor handle around, not only between PL/SQL code, but also from PL/SQL to the actual client process (Java. VB, SQL*Plus, TOAD, etc).
    The primary thing to remember - irrespective of what the client calls this (e.g. ref cursor, SQL statement handle, etc), this all refers to the same SQL cursor in the Shared Pool. And that this SQL cursor is a program that outputs data, and not a result set in itself.

  • Stored Procedure Returning Multiple Rows

    Hello. Where can I find sample code from a class that calls a stored procedure that returns multiple rows?
    I have a servlet that calls the DB directly from the servlet & loops through the result set. I want to put that code into a stored procedure, but I'm not sure how to loop through the results.
    Your help is greatly appreciated!

    Surely you would call the stored procedure and loop
    through the resultset as usual.
    all that is different is the method by which you obtain the resultSet .
    assuming CallableStatement, Connection have been
    instantiated.
    cstmt=con.prepareCall("{call sp_NewOfficeSurgery (?,?)}");
    cstmt.setString(1,"first");
    cstmt.setString(2,"second");
    rs = cstmt.executeQuery();
    while (rs.next())
    String nme = rs.getString(1)
    etc,etc
    Hope this helps , Sorry If I have misinterpreted this

  • Returning Multiple Rows From DBAdapter Calling PL/SQL Procedure

    Oracle XE 10g Express Edition
    JDeveloper 11.1.1.2.0
    WebLogic Server 11g
    Guys,
    I have a table of orders, which I need to interrogate, and pass back any matching rows which meet certain criteria (e.g. status = 'OPEN').
    However, rather than create a DBAdapter using an Operation Type of "Peform an Operation on a Table/Select", I need to use an Operation Type of "Call a Stored Procedure or Function".
    I therefore need the procedure to return all the matching rows, rather than a single row.
    I have looked at declaring return parameters for the procedure of the following types:
    RECORD - is good because it allows me to return the elements of the row with their correct datatypes, but does not meet my needs because it will only support the return of a single row.
    VARRAY - good because it can contain many row elements, but not good because it only supports a single row return, and also because all elements of the VARRAY must be of the same data type.
    TABLE - good because it can contain many rows, but bad because each row can contain only two elements - the index element and the data element.
    I think I could first define a RECORD (to hold a row), and then define a TABLE, with the data element being the RECORD, but I have found JDeveloper very fussy indeed when dealing with 'non-standard' data types in the DBAdapter.
    Apologies if I am missing something obvious, but can anyone suggest a way of doing this?
    Many thanks in advance.

    Hi, I've been able to create process that seems to work. My platform is a but different but I don't think this is important for your question.
    Here is the PL/SQL code. Just make Db Adapter for Calling stored procedure and it returns all rows!
    Be aware of possible limitations on how manyrows you could return in one select! This can have severe impact on performance.
    Succes.

  • CLR Procedure and returning large number of rows

    I have a CLR stored procedure coded in C# that retrieves data from a web service, and returns that data using SendResultsStart/SendResultsRow/SendResultsEnd. This all works fine, except when the data from the web service is tens or even thousands of records.
    The code itself takes about 3 minutes on average to do all it's work with around 50000-60000 records, but the procedure does not return in SSMS for about another 10-15 minutes, during which time the CPU and memory usage go up significantly.
    To rule out any of the CLR code as the culprit, I created a very simple CLR procedure that just loops to return 100000 records with int and nvarchar(256) fields with the current count, and "ABC" followed by the count.  Here is the code:
    [Microsoft.SqlServer.Server.SqlProcedure]
    public static void ABC()
    System.Diagnostics.Stopwatch ExecuteTimer = System.Diagnostics.Stopwatch.StartNew();
    SqlMetaData[] ResultMetaData = new SqlMetaData[2];
    ResultMetaData[0] = new SqlMetaData("count", SqlDbType.Int);
    ResultMetaData[1] = new SqlMetaData("text", SqlDbType.NVarChar, 256);
    SqlContext.Pipe.SendResultsStart(new SqlDataRecord(ResultMetaData));
    for (int x = 0; x < 100000; x++)
    SqlDataRecord ResultItem = new SqlDataRecord(ResultMetaData);
    ResultItem.SetValue(0, x);
    ResultItem.SetValue(1, "ABC" + x.ToString());
    SqlContext.Pipe.SendResultsRow(ResultItem);
    SqlContext.Pipe.SendResultsEnd();
    TimeSpan ExecTime = ExecuteTimer.Elapsed;
    SqlContext.Pipe.Send("Elapsed Time: " + ExecTime.Minutes.ToString() + ":" + ExecTime.Seconds.ToString() + "." + ExecTime.Milliseconds.ToString());
    I then executed procedure ABC in SSMS, and it took 21 minutes to return.  All of the data rows were visible after just a couple of seconds, but the query continued to run as the CPU and memory went up again.
    Is this really how long it should take to return 100000 rows, or am I missing something?  Is there a better approach than using SendResultsStart/SendResultsRow/SendResultsEnd?
    I've googled this to death and haven't found anything that helped or even explained why this is.
    I would greatly appreciate any suggestions or alternate methods to achieve this faster.
    Thanks!
    Alex

    When you create a new object, space on the garbage-collected heap is allocated for that object, and the address will be stored in a reference. Some time later, there will no longer be any references that hold the address of the allocated object. It doesn't
    matter whether the reference count went to 0 because the reference was set to null or because the reference was on the stack and is no longer in lexical scope, the end result is the same: the garbage collector will, at some point in time, have to perform the
    book-keeping operations necessary to identify that the space allocated for that now-unreferenced object can be re-used. When, on the other hand, you only create a single SqlDataRecord object and hold onto the reference, all of the book-keeping operations
    associated with creating 100,000 objects are eliminated. This is why the documentation for the SqlDataReader class advises that:
    When writing common language runtime (CLR) applications, you should re-use existing
    SqlDataRecord objects instead of creating new ones every time. Creating many new
    SqlDataRecord objects could severely deplete memory and adversely affect performance.

  • How just return one row of a one to many join..

    So I have a one to many join where the SMOPERATOR table has data I need however it has a couple of rows that match the JOIN condition in there. I just need to return one row. I think this can be accomplished with a subquery in the join however have not been able to come up with the right syntax to do so.

    SMOPERATOR.PRIMARY_ASSIGNMENT_GROUP,

    WHEN (bc_request='t' and substr(assignment,1,3)='MTS') THEN 'M'
    ELSE 'U' end) as type
    from SMINCREQ
    left outer join SMOPERATOR on SMINCREQ.assignment=SMOPERATOR.primary_assignment_group
    WHERE SMINCREQ.owner_manager_name=:P170_SELECTION and SMOPERATOR.wdmanagername=:P170_SELECTION
    AND open_time BETWEEN to_date(:P170_SDATEB,'DD-MON-YYYY') AND to_date(:P170_EDATEB,'DD-MON-YYYY')
    AND
    (bc_request='f' and subcategory='ACTIVATION' and related_record<>'t')
    OR
    (bc_request='f' and subcategory<>'ACTIVATION')
    OR
    (bc_request='t' and substr(assignment,1,3)<>'MTS')
    order by OPEN_TIMe

    Hi,
    This sounds like a Top-N Query , where you pick N items (N=1 in this case) off the top of an orderded list. I think you want a separate ordered list for each assignment; the analytic ROW_NUMBER function does that easily.
    Since you didn't post CREATE TABLE and INSERT statements for your sample data, I'll use tables from the scott schema to show how this is done.
    Say you have a query like this:
    SELECT       d.dname
    ,       e.empno, e.ename, e.job, e.sal
    FROM       scott.dept  d
    JOIN       scott.emp   e  ON   d.deptno = e.deptno
    ORDER BY  dname
    ;which produces this output:
    DNAME               EMPNO ENAME      JOB              SAL
    ACCOUNTING           7934 MILLER     CLERK           1300
    ACCOUNTING           7839 KING       PRESIDENT       5000
    ACCOUNTING           7782 CLARK      MANAGER         2450
    RESEARCH             7876 ADAMS      CLERK           1100
    RESEARCH             7902 FORD       ANALYST         3000
    RESEARCH             7566 JONES      MANAGER         2975
    RESEARCH             7369 SMITH      CLERK            800
    RESEARCH             7788 SCOTT      ANALYST         3000
    SALES                7521 WARD       SALESMAN        1250
    SALES                7844 TURNER     SALESMAN        1500
    SALES                7499 ALLEN      SALESMAN        1600
    SALES                7900 JAMES      CLERK            950
    SALES                7698 BLAKE      MANAGER         2850
    SALES                7654 MARTIN     SALESMAN        1250Now say you want to change the query so that it only returns one row per department, like this:
    DNAME               EMPNO ENAME      JOB              SAL
    ACCOUNTING           7782 CLARK      MANAGER         2450
    RESEARCH             7876 ADAMS      CLERK           1100
    SALES                7499 ALLEN      SALESMAN        1600where the empno, ename, job and sal columns on each row of output are all taken from the same row of scott.emp, though it doesn't really matter which row that is.
    One way to do it is to use the analytic ROW_NUMBER function to assign a sequence of unique numbers (1, 2, 3, ...) to all the rows in each department. Since each sequence startw with 1, and the numbers are unique within a department, there will be exactly one row per departement that was assigned the numebr 1, and we''ll display that row.
    Here's how to code that:
    WITH     got_r_num     AS
         SELECT     d.dname
         ,     e.empno, e.ename, e.job, e.sal
         ,     ROW_NUMBER () OVER ( PARTITION BY  d.dname
                                   ORDER BY          e.ename
                           )         AS r_num
         FROM     scott.dept  d
         JOIN     scott.emp   e  ON   d.deptno = e.deptno
    SELECT       dname
    ,       empno, ename, job, sal
    FROM       got_r_num
    WHERE       r_num     = 1
    ORDER BY  dname
    ;Notice that he sub-query got_r_num is almost the same as the original query; only it has one additional column, r_num, in the SELECT clause, and the sub-qeury does not have an ORDER BY clause. (Sub-queries almost never have an ORDER BY clause.)
    The ROW_NUMBER function must have an ORDER BY clause. In this example, I used "ORDER BY ename", meaning that, within each department, the row with the first ename (in sort order) will get r_num=1. You can use any column, or expression, or expressions in the ORDER BY clause. You muight as well use something consistent and predictable, like ename, but if you really wanted arbitrary numbering you could use a constant in the analytic ORDER BY clause, e.g. "ORDER BY NULL".

  • Stored Procedure/Function Returns Rows?

    Hello,
    I have very little experience writing PL/SQL procedures, but I have written my fair share of Sybase stored procedures. In Sybase, I can create a stored procedure that returns rows of data. For example:
    create procedure myproc as
    begin
    select * from mytable;
    end;
    Then if I invoke the procedure (whether that is from an interactive SQL session or from a ColdFusion or JSP page), several rows of data are returned to me.
    The benefit of this is that the web developers don't need to write complicated SQL.
    Is this even possible in Oracle? I have never seen anyone actually do this. Or do my web coders need to learn how to write PL/SQL and embed it into their code?
    HELP!
    Thanks!

    Hi Justin,
    Thanks for your reply. That's kind of what I was suspecting, except that I was hoping to be able to execute the function/procedure from within a SQL session also, for testing. Is there a way to invoke such a procedure from a SQL*Plus session and have it return the rowset (ref cursor) just as if I had typed in the SQL select statement?
    For example, I just want to type at a SQL*Plus prompt something like this:
    mypackage.myfunction(param1, param2);
    and then have it return the results to me. Is that possible?
    Thanks again for your help.

  • Tag Query History mode returning too many rows of data

    I am running a Tag Query from HQ to a plant site and want to limit the amount of data that returns to the minimum required to display trends on a chart.  The minimum required is subjective, but will be somewhere between 22 and 169 data points for a weeks data.  Testing and viewing the result is needed to determine what is an acceptable minimum.
    I build a Tag Query with a single tag and set it to History Mode.  I set a seven day period going midnight to midnight.  And I set the row count to 22.  When I execute the query it returns 22 data points.  But when I go to visualization, I get 565 datapoints.  So obviously that is not what I want as I want a very slim dataset coming back from the IP21 server (to minimize the load on the pipe).
    Any suggestions?

    Hi Michael,
    it looks to me like you have enabled the "Use Screen Resolution" option in your display template or in the applet HTML. Setting this option makes the display template fetch as many rows as there are pixels in the chart area. Like setting a rowcount in the applet HTML as a param, this will override any rowcount limitations you have set at the Query Template level...
    Hope this helps,
    Sascha

  • Procedure from PowerBuilder returning multiple rows

    Thanks in advance

    This is not a PL/SQL qustion, but a Powerbuilder question.
    Just what SQL constructs does Powerbuilder supports? And if there is no support for ref cursors, then the choice of using a client language that lacks basic core SQL support is questionable.

    Our HR database uses a procedure to build a list of employee IDs (ie. 1,3,14,...1210,1215) then calls a procedure to with a variable to extract details per employee. Unfortunately the list is 947 ids, however only 887 rows are returned.
    As a test I split the list in two and called the procedure. If I add the data rows together I get 947, hence I know the employees are valid. Can anyone suggest why a long list of Ids should fail? Is there a limit a stored procedure can return?
    The procedure (simplified down a bit) is:
    ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[sp_Employee_CreateTable]
     @EmpIds varchar(4000)
    AS
    SELECT    E.empid as EmpId ,E.Surname
        FROM    Employee E
        WHERE  (E.[EmpID] IN (select * from GetAllUsersUnderManager(@EmpIds))) AND EJ.id=dbo.GetCurrentEmployeeJobRecord(EJ.empid)--EJ.dateto IS NULL
    I can run the procedure as:
    "exec sp_Employee_CreateTable @EmpIds=N'1,3,14.....999'" which returns (say) 700 rows  and  "exec sp_Employee_CreateTable @EmpIds=N'1001,.....1215'" which returns 247 rows. (ie. 700+247 = 947 which is correct.
    But exec sp_Employee_CreateTable @EmpIds=N'1,3,14......1215' only returns 887 rows.
    I have looked at the length of the data passed to the procedure (1,3,...1215) which equals 4126 chars, therefore I bumped the varchar space from 4,000 to 6,000 which is still within limits, however the number of rows returned was still 887.
    Any help would be gratefully received.

    Hi Scott. I run the script you suggested (thank you), the var EmpIds was set to a string with over 930 ids. The returned data set started with 0 but only had 888 rows. As mentioned above I refer the 930+ list as full list, and the 888 as the short list.
    The difference (around 47) were the last values in the full list.
    Although EmpIds was set to 6K it definately seems like it gets to around 4K chars then ignores any other values.
    Re "since you pass....". Absolutely. I have modified the Employee_CreateTable with the var update to 6K/
    ALTER PROCEDURE [dbo].[sp_Employee_CreateTable]
     @EmpIds varchar(6000),
     @IncludeLeavers Bit
    AS
        SELECT    E.empid as EmpId ,E.Surname, E.Firstname as Forename,E.PayrollID, E.intextno as Extension, EJ.position as Position, [dbo].[GetEmployeeDepartment](E.empid) as Department, [dbo].[GetEmployeeLocation](E.empid) as Location,
    E.title as Title, EJ.ReportsTo,
                CoEmail,E.[left]
        FROM    Employee E INNER JOIN EmployeeJobs EJ
        ON        E.empid = EJ.empid
        WHERE  (E.[EmpID] IN (select * from GetAllUsersUnderManager(@EmpIds))) AND EJ.id=dbo.GetCurrentEmployeeJobRecord(EJ.empid)--EJ.dateto IS NULL
                AND (E.[left]=0 or E.[left]=@IncludeLeavers)
        ORDER BY E.Surname, E.Firstname, E.empid
