Profiles in ODI

Hello there, I am new to ODI and I had a couple of questions about the profiles.
I would like to know what profile(s) i need to assign in order to allow a developer to work in a given repository/project without being able to change a data model.
I need them to be able to view, edit, delete interfaces, packages, variables, Copy and modify....not modify the original.
Any help you be great.
Thank you,
IT Intern

Ok, but I do not completely understand what every
method does. Basically I want the Devs to not be able
to change any metadata and just to be able to work on
their own projects, or projects which I allow them
too.As far I as have been able to determine there is no documentation of what each method does. Generally they correspond to the right-click options, but there are often other methods required to perform a specific action.
The best way I have determined to build a custom security profile is to go through the tedious work of granting a profile a few methods at a time, then logging into the Designer application to test the privilege. You will then inevitably get an some obscure error and need to guess at what method the profile is missing.
We are in the process of setting up our ODI environment and I recently spent a few weeks(!) of time developing custom security profiles. We had a similar goal of creating a role that gave developers read-only access to models and non-generic project access (= access only to projects they created or had been granted). We also had another major requirement to restrict users from making changes to the production work repository.
We did successfully create profiles to meet the goals of that role -- as well as several other roles we required -- but discovered a significant security issue. Any user could log into Security Manager and drag-n-drop any instance (project, model, work repository, etc.) that they could see from Designer onto any other user that had a non-generic type profile and grant that user access to the instance. This was true, even though we hadn't granted them the appropriate Security Manager methods that control this "drag-n-drop" functionality. The consequence is that we couldn't really create a secure environment that utilized any non-generic privileges. (Our assessment is that ODI security is still pretty buggy; Oracle should invest some time in unit testing their ODI security model.)
We decided to change direction: We have an open development environment where every developer has full (generic) access to all projects in the development work repository (still have read-only access to models). To meet our secure production requirement, we also ended up creating the production environment as a separate master repository with separate authorized users.

are the profile defined in the ODI security manager the default one or you can define your own parameters.
can some one send me some link or some document which can show me how to define profile and user authorization.
    Thanks to you all .

    Hi,
Yes u can have your OWN profiles with defined objects in security manager.
Rather than the standard "oracledi_user" document there is no document as such which talk about this.

  • Oracle DQ -  Setup the Data File

I installed the 10.1.3.4 and Data QUality and Profiling for ODI, and working on the Sample Tutorial ( 10g Release 3). On page 5, it says that there exists a oracle DQ's sample file, oracledq_sample_data.zip. Where can I find the file?
    Thank you.

I installed ODI 10.1.3.4 on my machine. When I tried to run the Data Quality Metabase Manager or Data Profiling and Quality I get <file not found> error.
Discovery.exe or admin.exe --> is there any additional settings I should add to fix this issue?

  • ODI Data Profiling and Data Quality

    Hi experts,
Searching about ODI features for data profiling and data quality I found (I think) many ... extensions? for the product, that confuse me. Cause I think there are at least three diferents ways to do data profiling and data quality:
In first place, I found that ODI has out of the box features for data profiling and data quality, but, acording to the paper, this features are too limited.
The second way I found was the product Oracle Data Profiling and Oracle Data Quality for Oracle Data Integrator 11gR1 (11.1.1.3.0) that is in the download page of ODI. Acording to the page, this product extends the existing inline Data Quality and Data profiling features of ODI.
Finally, the third way is Oracle Enterprise Data Quality that is another product that can be integrated to ODI.
I dont know if I understood good my alternatives. But, in fact, I need a general explanation of what ODI offer to do Data Quality and Data profiling. Can you help me to understand this?
    Very thanks in advance.

Hi after 11.1.1.3 version of ODI release, oracle no longer supports ODP/ODQ which is a trillium software product and this not owned by oracle. Oracle is recommending the usage OEDQ for quality purposes. It's better if you could spend time on OEDQ rather than trying to learn and implement ODP/ODQ in ODI

  • ODI Login Profiles / Connection Info

Where does ODI store the login profile information i.e. username/password + associated connection profiles. Is it in a config file somewhere in the ODI directory structure?

I thought that was the case. In that case how would it be possible to have 2 different lists of profiles? When I access ODI from shortcuts on the desktop I get the list I expect to see and the details present in the config files you mentioned. However when I access any of the ODI modules from the Programs menu I get a completely different list of profiles which I can't find in any of the config files. Any ideas??
    My ODI version is 10

  • Problem launching ODI Data Quality/Profiling in Vista

    Hello
I am having a weird problem with Oracle Data Integrator installation in Vista. Hope somebody could help me.
I have installed ODI (10.1.3.5.0) along with Data Quality and Profiling. The installation was successful, however, while trying to launch Data Quality/Metabase Server etc I am getting an error: "admin.exe is not found"/"discovery.exe not found". Moreover, bin directory under oracledq directory is empty. I was just wondering, there must be "something" at least in the bin directory if the installation was error free!
Could you please let me know if anything is wrong with the installation or is that a Vista problem? Do I need to install anything else as a pre-requisite?
    Your assistance is much appreciated..
    Shibaji Gupta

    Hello Rathish
Thanks for the info; First of all, please let me know where from shall I copy those files?
In my case the "/oracledq/bin" directory is "just" empty!
As the installation did not raise any problem, I can probably guess that all the .dll files (if any) are correctly installed, except for the "bin" directory contents. Is there a way to copy the entire bin directory content? Not sure how Oracle performs the installation. If you could help me from your experience.
Any way, thanks again for the assistance. Would like to try all available options.

  • Sql Server Connectivity issue with ODI Data Profiler

    Hi all,
To profile data from SQL Server Data source, i had created a ODBC connection(using Windows NT authentication) in the system and it was successful. Created a connection with Type ODBC connection in Loader Connections along with System name, Port No and DSN Name. But while trying to connect the database it is throwing an error as Authentication Failed. Please guide me.

ODI's DP does not support the use of sourcing data on the ODBC data source. You must extract to a file, and use the file as the input.

  • 'connect without context' profile takes away data/view data rights in model

Demystify ODI Security -- Documentation is very weak on this topic.
Non-generic profiles-This concept works perfectly well for projects/folders/packages.
But as soon as I bring in the new profile: CONNECT_WITHOUT_CONTEXT, the user loses the ability to query data from within ODI.
(‘data’, ‘view data’ options in the model/datastore section).
I have tried NG versus generic profiles of metadata admin-but somehow the data/view data option errors out:
    Cannot display table’s data.
But if I use the regular CONNECT, the options come back.

That is because the CONTEXT links the Logical and the Physical. All Model objects are related to a logical schema. Each logical is related to a physical schema via the context. If you have no context, then you break the link, therefore ODI does not know 'where to look' for the data and will error.
    Cheers
