Profiling toplink
Hi,
As part profiling the toplink, we are seeing some negative values as shown below. Would like to know the meaning of the same.
Profile(ReadAllQuery,
class=oracle.tip.b2b.model.instance.BusinessMessage,
number of objects=1,
total time=-1,
local time=1,
profiling time=1,
time/object=-1,
objects/second=-1000,
Regards,
Prasanna
Seems odd. It seems it might be trying to subtract the profiling time from the local time, but because the query seemed to take no time at all, got a negative. I would not worry about it, but you could log a bug if you wish.

Hello,
I have a very curious performance problem. I have a query which returns 0 rows and takes around 9 secs to execute in TopLink. If I try to execute generated SQL for that ReadAllQuery (taken from log) directly through JDBC, it takes only 70ms. I use TopLink 9.0.3 with Oracle9i 9.2.0.3. I've traced through sources and identified that the problem is not in Toplink directly but in call to Oracle JDBC driver. But then I don't understand why in my JDBC case it is so fast. The problem is the same no matter if I use thin or OCI driver.
I've prepared a little test to show it up:

Thanks a lot!
MarcelMarcel,
TopLink supports native SQL generation that will use the TO_DATE operators. You can turn on native SQL in a couple of ways.
1. SESSIONS.XML
<login>
<platform-class>oracle.toplink.internal.databaseaccess.OraclePlatform</platform-class>
<user-name>user</user-name>
<password>password</password>
<uses-native-sequencing>true</uses-native-sequencing>
2. Through DatabaseLogin API:
After the project is read in or instantiated:
project.getLogin().useNativeSQL();
This should get the SQL you need and address your performance issue.

Incorrect INSERT in the sample Employee project
Hi,
In the sample Employee project provided with the 10.1.2 release the following code generates an incorrect insert (the runtime is 10.1.3 (Build 051113)).
UnitOfWork uow = this.getSession().acquireUnitOfWork();
Employee newEmployee = new Employee();
newEmployee.setFirstName("Joseph");
newEmployee.setLastName("Fletcher");
PhoneNumber phone = new PhoneNumber();
phone.setAreaCode("123");
phone.setNumber("4567890");
phone.setType("Home");
newEmployee.addPhoneNumber(phone);
uow.registerNewObject(newEmployee);
uow.commit();
Triggers the following exception:

Indeed the EMP_ID cannot be null as it is part of the PK. This should not be null.
Regards,
-horeaHi Chris,
Thank you for looking into this. I checked your suggestions and in our sessions.xml file we do define a custom sequence table (seems to be working fine in all other projects), the same defined via the project MW.
Also, the insert in the employee table seems to be generated correctly:
[TopLink Fine]: 2006.01.25 02:41:29.930--ClientSession(27651180)--Connection(3834717)--INSERT INTO POC_EMPLOYEE (EMP_ID, GENDER, VERSION, F_NAME, L_NAME, COUNTER, MANAGER_ID, END_DATE, START_DATE, BKUP_KEY, MAIN_KEY, START_TIME, END_TIME, ADDR_ID) VALUES (302, NULL, 1, 'Joseph', 'Fletcher', 0, NULL, NULL, NULL, NULL, NULL, {ts '2000-02-01 09:00:00.617'}, {ts '2000-02-01 17:00:00.617'}, NULL)
Below is the sessions.xml we use.

Toplink Profiler -- ReadAllQuery
I'm using the toplink oracle.toplink.tools.profiler.PerformanceProfiler to profile out code in hopes to speed it up our application. I let the profiler run for two days on our staging server under light load. Several of the entries are very interesting, this ReadAllQuery took 10.5 seconds. Most of the time was spend in operations: object building and query prepare. It looks like the SQL execute was only 151 milliseconds. When I run the generated SQL against the database it's extremely quick.

There isn't any special about this operation, in fact it runs every hour on a timer. Normally the results this operation is:
Profile(ReadAllQuery,
class=com.attask.model.RKProject,
number of objects=1,
total time=33,
local time=33,
sql prepare=1,
query prepare=1,
sql execute=31,
time/object=33,
objects/second=30,
Notice it doesn't even have those operations. I can even clear the database cache,
oracle.toplink.threetier.Server.getIdentityMapAccessor().initializeAllIdentityMaps();
and the operation is fast.
The question is, What causes this slow down. Could this be a garbage collection issue? Does anyone have any ideas? This wouldn't be a problem, except that it happens too often.
Toplink version 10.1.3.3I finally found the issue: the oracle.dms.instrument.DMSConsole is never initialized by TopLink. I have to do it manually :
try {
new DMSConsole().init(null);
} catch (DMSError e) {
e.printStackTrace();
}because TopLink's DMSPerformanceProfiler getthe sensor level from the DMSConsole using the following method:
DMSConsole.getSensorWeight()and the DMSConsole's sensor weight is read from System properties only during initialization.
I hope this has been corrected in the TopLink versions newer that the one I use. -
We are getting the below error in our production server & also other servers(UAT, Staging). Only option is to restart the OSB server.
Test connection is working fine and able to connect the database without any issue. We have enabled connection leak profiling and also, provided the inactive time outs , still does not work. Need your suggestion for the below error.

You may need to configure the connection settings in the deployment descriptor (i.e. DbAdapter.rar#META-INF/weblogic-ra.xml) and restart the server. This exception is considered retriable, likely due to a communication failure. To classify it as non-retriable instead add property nonRetriableErrorCodes with value "0" to your deployment descriptor (i.e. weblogic-ra.xml). To auto retry a retriable fault set these composite.xml properties for this invoke: jca.retry.interval, jca.retry.count, and jca.retry.backoff. All properties are integers.

Though the message says the error is in obtaining a TopLink session, the exception stack has nothing to do with TopLink, and the error seems to be coming from oracle.tip.adapter.db.toplinkext.NameEnquoter.init() directly calling weblogic.jdbc.wrapper.Connection.getMetaData() on what must be a stale or closed connection. This looks like a DB adapter application, so you might want to post this question there as they might be able to help configure your datasource appropriately for the application.

DbAdapter / Toplink Performance issues
I'm using the DbAdabpter / Toplink to fetch a sizable dataset (500 - 30,000) row for later emission to a file. The fetch of this data via the DbAdapter / Toplink seems to works reasonably well (albeit quite slow) for datasets between 500-7,000 rows. If I attempt to read a larger dataset, the DbAdapter invocation simply times out. I've tweaked the following configuration options suspecting they might help with the long running invoke the DbAdapter partner link:
* created an on alarm branch and allowed for 15 minutes for the dataset to be returned.
* increased the syncMaxWaitTime attribute to 15 minutes.
* Configured the BPEL OC4J instance to use 2048MB for the JVM heap.
I've tested the query being used by the DbAdapter via SQL navigator and it returns the data sub-second. I'm suspecting the performance issue is related to the DbAdapter / Toplink rendering the thousands of rows into an XML DOM representation. Might this be the case?
To help further my hypothesis, I'd like to enable the Toplink profiler. I've found a document in the Oracle doc library that suggests it can be enabled with the following directive, "logProfile" (http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/ias/toplink/doc/1013/MAIN/_html/optimiz003.htm#BEEBCBJF). Any idea where I'd specify this directive? Perhaps somewhere in the toplink_mappings.xml file?
I could be completely off base and the performance issue could be attributed to some other aspect of my BPEL process. Has anyone else encountered this sort of behavior when working with DbAdapters that return thousands of rows?
Thanks,
PeterHi Peter,
if you are still experiencing the timeout problem you may want to alter the transaction config timout setting in the server.xml file. The tuning guide indicates to change the one file but we have changed it in two locations.
j2ee/OC4J_BPEL/config (to 700000) and integration/orabpel/system/appserver/oc4j/j2ee/home/config/ (600000) we have previously found that the sync_max_wait_time in the console needs to be set at a value lower than the settings in the above files (540 secs).
For the performance have you captured the sql from the island log that BPEL is actually running (colaxa.cube.ws logging to debug), is it from a single table or from multiple. We managed to improve the perfromance by setting the use-joining in the toplink-mappings file, but then ended up creating a view in the source system to limit the queries being executed. I am not sure about BPEL's capacity to handle large payloads but it would be interesting to know.

Toplink JPA properties in persistence unit are ignored
I'm trying to make some EJB3 stateless session bean webservices, using the toplink essentials (build b41 beta 2) shipped with OC4J stand-alone 10.1.3.3.0.
Basically I have a 'model' project with my EJB3 entity beans, and a persistence.xml. Then I have a webservice project, that has the model project as a dependency. Both projects are in the same application in JDeveloper. I use a deployment profile to deploy to my seperate OC4J stand-alone instance.
My service runs and deploys fine. The persistence unit is read, and the correct datasource is selected and logged in on. However I notice two things:
- the container complains during deployment, telling me property toplink.server.platform.class.name is deprecated and I should use toplink.target-server. However, I've set the property toplink.target-server as a property in my persistence.xml file...
- I don't see any Toplink logging, although I've set the property toplink.logging.level to FINE in the persistence.xml.
This leads me to believe that the properties are somehow ignored. Has anyone experienced this as well? Any hints/tips/suggestions on how to fix this?
Cheers,
Bas

1. The EJB3 container is automatically adding the property 'toplink.server.platform.class.name' into what is passed to TopLink to ensure the proper container is configured. I have had a bug filed to get this changed to toplink.target-server in the 10.1.3.4 patch-set.
2. The logging by default goes into the OC4J log found in <HOME>\j2ee\home\log\oc4j
You can re-configure OC4J to also log these messages to stdout or if you only want them to stdout you can simply set the logging-type in the persistence unit properties.

Toplink\JPA vs JDBC - Toplink died for my app with 5000 users
Hi All Just a quick question about performance when comparing toplink jpa ans jdbc.
I have an app I just develpoed using toplink for all data acces that will have approx 5000 users and initial testing with 200 things look good. However after launch and going live for 5000 people the app blew up. Lot's of memory heap errors, and TopLink exceptions...
To make things work I have replaced all the toplink with traditional JDBC, this works but I am currious as to why toplink blew up? I notice when JDev creates the Toplink code that it never does any checking for open connections and never explicitly closes connections. Is this something that I have to do?
I should not that I was not using datacontrols directly, I created a datacontrol but then ised the FacesContext to create a list of results in the backing bean??
Anyway, I know that's not a great description but I thought I would throw this question out there and see what people had to say?
Thanks
JIt is hard to say where a memory issue occurred. Normally usage of a memory profiler such as JRockit JRA, or JProfiler is useful in debugging such issues.
There were a couple related memory issues in previous releases, so ensure you have the latest release or patch release.
Using an isolated (shared=false) or weak cache may also help.
In general you should be able to scale to 5000 users without any issues.

Hi,
There's a note in the documentation of Oracle 10g that we should use TIMESTAMP instead of DATE in the DB.
And with the JDBC-Driver 10g writing of java.util.Timestamp with Date and Time works but reading doesn't work.
I throws an exception:

There is also no way to define a DB-Field in TopLink MappingWorkbench as TIMESTAMP.
Thanks for your help.
Regards, SimonHi all you.
I have small problem with timestamp type. I use both Jdeveloper version 9.0.5.2 and 10.1.2 to build object toplink from database. If column in database is TimeStamp type (I use to check concurrency by lastModifiedOn), then object toplink (auto created) has String field. I can read value from database but I can insert value for this field.
In address toplink object has field:
private String lastModifiedOn;
If I set address.setLastModifiedOn("14-FEB-05 08."); it run fine (14-FEB-05 08. is the value when I run sql: select systimestamp from dual; by SQL Navigator)
I cannot get String or Timestamp value of result:
ValueReadQuery query = new ValueReadQuery();
query.setSQLString(" SELECT SYSDATE FROM Dual");
Object timestamp = (Object)session.executeQuery(query);
If I set as:
address.setLastModifiedOn(String.valueOf(System.currentTimeMillis()));
then exception occurs

Oracle.toplink.internal.helper.NonSynchronizedVector exception
I get following exception when invoking session bean from EJB client generated by JDev (EJB JPA project). Session bean returns the list of value objects created using TopLink Essentials based JPA native query. Does anybody know what is causing this exception and if there is a workaround?
java.lang.ClassCastException: oracle.toplink.internal.helper.NonSynchronizedVector
List<ProfileBasicVO> profiles = searchFacade.queryBasicProfilesByLastName( partialName );
I get exception at this point:
for( ProfileBasicVO profile: profiles ) {
System.out.println( "lastName = " + profile.getLastName() );
...I changed the code to return List and I added mapping as a second parameter:
public List queryBasicProfilesByLastName(String partialName) {
Query basicProfileQuery =em.createNativeQuery( "findBasicProfilesByLastName", "BasicProfileResults" );
return basicProfileQuery.getResultList();
It fails with following exception:

Configuring Cache Expiration in Toplink using Jdeveloper
HI
I am using Toplink10g, Jdeveloper10g.
I have a batch job running over more than 25K records,
It initially perform a findall query, then updates data and calls commit on Unit OF Work(which merges the entity and all entities in relation), Commit is called after every 100 entities are updated.
After commit, new Unit of work is acquired from the Session.
I am monitoring the memory consumption, I can see it is increasing till it reaches the max., and even after batch job ends, the memory consumption never lowers down.
I assume, all those merged entities are now in cache.m
I tried to check different type of IdentityMaps(i.e. different type of cache), but none helped.
I also tried to set expiry at query level, but found no diff. in memory consumption.
I assume, that If I set cache expiration at project level, then it can help.
But, I couldn't find any way to set cache expiration at project level, in JDeveloper.
I opened the map( configured in sessions.xml), i found what kind of cache to use, but couldn't find a way to set the expiry.
Please suggest any otherw ay also, to reduce memory consumption by batch job, while using Toplink
ThanksCache expiration has nothing to do with your issue.
Assuming you used a weak cache, then the cache is probably not what is holding these objects in memory. A weak cache will allow any object that is not reference by your application to garbage collect.
Does your code or application hold onto these objects or the UnitOfWork, they will not be free to garbage collect until you remove any references to them.
Are you holding onto the original findAll query results? If so, then this will keep all of these objects in memory. The UnitOfWork should still be free to garbage collect, so you will need to find out what is holding onto the UnitOfWork or the objects within it. You may wish to use a memory profiler such as JProfiler.
What exact version of TopLink are you using? I believe there were some memory related issues in 10g, so make sure you have the latest patch release.
Depending on your TopLink version you could also try an isolated cache.

Hi,
I'm using JPA (toplink implementation). When I'm running following named query
*@NamedQuery(name = "Class.search",*
query = "select c "
+ "from Clazz c, Subject sub, School sch "
+ "where sub = c.subject"
+ " and lower(c.name) like :name"
+ " and lower(sub.name) like :subject"
+ " and lower(sch.name) like :school"
+ " and sch = c.school "
+ "order by c.name"
inside the 11g container, an sqlexception happens. In the exception I can see that the query is translated into following
SELECT CLASS.ID, CLASS.NAME, CLASS.VERSION_NO, CLASS.CURRICULUM, CLASS.MODIFIED_BY, CLASS.CREATED_BY, CLASS.CREATED_DATE, CLASS.ACTIVE, CLASS.MODIFIED_DATE, CLASS.TEACHING_MATERIAL, CLASS.START_DATE, CLASS.END_DATE, CLASS.SUBJECT_ID, CLASS.SCHOOL_ID FROM CLASS t0, SCHOOL t2, SUBJECT t1 WHERE (((((t1.ID = t0.SUBJECT_ID) AND (LOWER(t0.NAME) LIKE ?)) AND (LOWER(t1.NAME_FO) LIKE ?)) AND (LOWER(t2.NAME) LIKE ?)) AND (t2.ID = t0.SCHOOL_ID)) ORDER BY t0.NAME ASC
bind => [%, %, %]
As you can see, the prefix on the class table is class in the select part while it is t0 in the rest of the sql.
If I run this query in my test outside the container (j2se), then it works fine. I'm using preview 4.
What is the problem.

HOWTO : Portletizing Faces/EJB/Toplink onto Webcenter. Gotchas&Fixes
I thought I'd share some helpful links and tips.
If you develop ADF Faces portlets by the book you'll run into a couple of problems when trying to deploy them on the Standalone OC4J, and a couple more when deploying to Webcenter.
I followed the ADF tutorial here...
http://www.oracle.com/technology/obe/ADF_tutorial_1013/10131/index.htm
Chapter 11 contains info about some extra steps that you need to carry out in order to deploy onto Webcenter.
That chapter instructs you to create a Deployment Project, within which you create your deployment profile. That works well while you are deploying just the Faces/EJB/Toplink application. When you come to 'portletize' your JSF pages however, the deployment procedure seems to skip the WSRP/WSDL packaging step. You should be seeing this in the deployment output page.
"Creating WSDLs for the WSRP Application - WSDLs for the WSRP Application have been created"
It works OK if you create the ear deployment profile within your View Controller project - which contains the portlet.xml file.
See the Portletizing viewlet here
http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/webcenter/owcs_10132_demos.html
- they use the same deployment profile for both Faces and Portlet deployment - stored in the faces project.
When editing the portlet.xml file DefaultPage.view variable, miss out the "faces" part of the path to your initial JSF page - or you will get this error:-
"SEVERE: oracle.adf.model.portlet.binding.PortletBindingException"
See this thread...
Re: JSF Portlets Bug
Even if you have successfully deployed to Standalone OC4J, when you deploy to Webcenter you will get an error about "oracle.wsrp" shared library. Follow the advice on this thread to sort things out ...
Re: PDK with OC4J 10.1.3
Having successfully run my portletized Faces/Toplink pages served from Webcenter within a client JSF app in Jdeveloper, my next step is to deploy and run that portlet consumer on Webcenter.
So far I'm getting MDSRuntimeException when I access the expected url.
I believe I should look here next..
http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B32110_01/webcenter.1013/b31074/jpsdg_deploy.htm#BIHFCJDD
I'll add more to this thread as I make more progress.
Good luck everyone!
Donald.In the viewlet
http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/webcenter/owcs_10132_demos.html
the user is prompted for an 'MDS' location.
I didn't get that prompt. This problem is mentioned on another thread - the answer was to make sure the deployment profile being used was specifically a WebCenter deployment profile. I'm sure I didn't see that option in my "New..." list - until I shut down and restarted Jdeveloper. Exact name of profile type is "WebCenter Application WAR".
I have it now. Having been prompted for an MDS location (created an empty folder for this) when I deployed my portlet client to my standalone OC4J, at last the client app runs from standalone!
I think I still need to carry out some instructions from here
http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B32110_01/webcenter.1013/b31074/jpsdg_deploy.htm#BIHFCJDD
in order to create a 'targeted EAR file' for deployment to WebCenter itself.

I have the following problem:
A j2ee struts application deployed over a cluster of 4 application server (10g). Machines Sun Solaris, configured identically with one OC4J container and three processes(3 jvm's). Memory always keeps growing till the max configured in the java options. Which is set to 1,5 Gb (we have tried with a lower Xmx1GB and even Xmx2GB)...
Once that number is hit than the CPU turns high, and the controller ping process of the application server forcefully terminates the process(es) which can not be reached by the ping process.
Load: approximately 1500 users per day, with high degree of updates and inserts.
My question: can the toplink cache,(most of the classes are configured SoftCacheWeakReference) be the cause of this ridiculous memory growth?Seems like your application has a memory leak somewhere. You may wish to analyze your app servers memory usage with memory profiling tools, such as JProbe memory profiler.
Unless you have a very large cache size, I would not expect the SoftCacheWeakIdentityMap to cause a memory issue. You can verify this by changing your caching type to WeakIdentityMap. Also double check that you are not using a FullIdentityMap anywhere, nor using a very large cache size.
Also verify your application does not holding references to objects and not allowing them to garbage collect. -
ADF Toplink Create Row with foreign key
Hello,
I'd like to create a new row in a table that has a required one-to-one mapping relationship (foreign key). I've created an edit form by dragging the return node of a readQuery. The columns holding foreign key values aren't added to the page(because of 1-1 relationship) and when I commit the changes errors are raised.
How do I pass the foreign key to the ADF Toplink framwork to include in the insert statement.TopLink's persistence model is based around relationships, which represent FKs. To have these FKs properly populated you need to create the corresponding object relationships.
To do this you need to create a data action that will invoke a method on your class passing in the object you want to create the relationship with. There is currently an issue where ADF will not allow you to easily drop a set method onto an action. You will need to create a method on your bean that does not start with 'set'.
In the demos I have done I have added a method like 'populateAddress(Address)' that internally calls the set method. This populate method will show up on the data control palette and you can then drop it on the action in your page flow.
One additional tip: To access the object you want to pass in you will need to extend the default expression that reflects the current selected row in the iterator to have '.dataProvider' appended. This accesses the persistent object within row container.
If you are still struggling please contact me through the email address in my forum profile.
