Public WiFI Hotspot with Terms of Service and Stats?

Check out this company. Several years ago i set up a small switch at a garage that wanted their customers to have wifi and of course separate from their network. The actual wifi signal was provided by a Linksys wrt54g plugged into the switch.

Hmmm I'm looking at some of those. The main drawback would be that they limit the bandwidth on most models. We have a 100 Mbps fiber line, and I would have no problem with WiFi using up to 50% of that, so we would be looking at one of the pricier models.

So two questions really.First one:I'm curious, those of you that provide wifi to either the public or employees, do you have a "terms of service / usage agreement" page that users have to agree to before they are given access? Why / why not? What are the legal implications of not having one? Let's say citizen Jim gets on my free wifi at our library and downloads a virus. Can he sue us if we don't have some kind of disclaimer and terms of use that he had to agree to?Second:Those of you that use a captive portal with usage terms and that do stat counting, what provider do you use? We're thinking about switching next year, because our current one has been very spotty. Being a public library (that means we are POOR), cost is obviously the biggest issue. We just need to be able to log how many total sessions on the wifi, length of sessions,...

  • Pubic Hotspot with "Terms of service" page

Back a few firmwares ago, I never had an issue with connecting to a hotstop that required me to click a block and hit submit. Now on the latest firmware, even if I try to use the close MAC feature (which honestly seems broken) I can't connect, and therefor can not enjoy both a hotspot and my Mypassport wireless at the same time.  Anyone know of any workarounds, or even a link or way to downgrade firmware (which I really don't want to do)I basically live traveling for work, and need this feature to work. It used too, now it's nearly worthless. Can't watch a movie and use iMessageCan't update my iTunesCan't surf while aorting filesCan't do anything web related while working with my files.  Making me disgruntled lol.

Okay, now I see it. I had my network set to  "Share content on this network", and when you do that the "Clone MAC Address" button is hidden. Unticking that option gave me access to the Clone MAC Address feature. The wording of that popup help could be better, but it looks like the MPW is supposed to act like a router, allowing the MPW to present the MAC Address of a connected computer to the network it is connected to (the hotspot), rather than its own MAC Address. I tested this feature on my MPW using the following connections:iPhone 4 => MPW => My Router <= PC I used my PC to access my router's administrtion page and recorded my iPhone and the MPW MAC Addresses.I used my iPhone to do the tasks you would have been doing on your Macbook.I connected my iPhone directly to the MPW, then used Safari on the iPhone to access the MPW Dashboard, turn off the "Share content on this network" and turn on the Clone MAC Address feature. The MPW said it was updating the network connection.I checked my router's administration page, refreshed the connected devices page, and observed that there was no change to the MAC Address that the MPW was supplying to the router. So I can only agree with you, that the Clone MAC Address function is broken. It doesn't change the MAC Address supplied to the upstream network as it should. Given that the Clone MAC Address function is broken in this firmware, it is reasonable to assume that something else is broken, or chaged, which is preventing you from gettng to the TOS page. I think you should raise a ticket with WD Support, using the function in the MPW Dashboard so you can send all details. They may be able to help you get this working with the current firmware, but at the least they should test the Clone MAC Address feature, confirm it is broken, and fix it in the next firmware. In the mean time, downgrading the firmware seems the only option. I thought I had kept a copy of the previous firmware, but it appears that I haven't. Perhaps someone else has a copy they can share.

  • PopUp window at public wifi hotspots?

If I connect to a public wifi hotspot I get a popup window where the landing page from the operator is shown (captive portal). How can this be managed? Because the window is closed after the login there is no chance to get the session window for logout etc. from the service provider.
    Thanks.

I run a number of wifi hotspots, all of which use a captive portal "Splash Page" that is branded per location.
Since the iOS6 update I have been swamped with guests and customers complaining about this www.apple.com "success" page popping up instead of the intended customers login and terms acceptance page. When cancelling it drops the wifi router connection and there is no way to connect to the intended free wifi hotspot.
The problem is in Apple's update, there currently is no way to disable this unwanted feature.
The solution is to go to your Settings>General>Cellular>Cellular Data and turn it OFF when you are at the hotspot location.
Now when you choose the hotspot's SSID and join it......you will get the sign in page from the captive portal and not the "success" page.
Be sure and turn the Cellular Data back on.....when you leave the hotspot.
Apple needs to fix this WISPr function, I am only a small provider and I am sure that worldwide there are going to be hundreds of thousands of iphone, ipad and laptop users who will no longer be able to sign on at wifi hotspots, work, universities, hospitals and hotels.
As a side note: I have an older 4S phone with iOS6 and I cannot join.....my wife has a newer 4S phone with iOS6 installed and even though both our phones are set exactly the same......she can connect without turning off her cellular data and I cannot.   Curious?

  • Received mysteries text regarding a code send from my own Iphone after using a unprotected public Wifi-hotspot

Today I received a text from my own Iphone number displayed as +28 18 xx xx that I have not written myself. It said I now had a new code thas was xxxx without specifying what for. Just before I got that text I had used a couple of different public wifi-hotspots. Should i be worried? After i searched Google all I could find was that it was a possibility your Iphone can be hacked on Wifi and the other option was that the code I received maybe was from the Verified SecureCode by Visa & Mastercard that I did sign up for a long time ago. If that was the case someone would be trying to use my credit card. If anyone could help me to disclose why i got the text from my own Iphone I would be very grateful.

  • How to create adhoc Wifi Hotspot with iPhone to connect Apple TV for Mirroring and Airplay?

I don't want to use my iPhone to share or tether my iPad or laptop etc. with my cellular data plan.
What I want is to create a hotspot with my iPhone (or iPad) so that I may connect my Apple TV to the adhoc network so I am able to stream video and music from my iPhone to the Apple TV.
I do presentations in front of live audiences and want the ability to mirror my iPad or use Airplay to stream video and photos to the Apple TV without connecting to a public WiFi network.
The apple TV is so small, I just tuck it into my bag with an HDMI cable and I am able to tap into LCD projectors and flat screens and use keynote or video from my iPad so my audiences can see my presentations.
Seems pretty simple. But I cannot activate a hot spot on my iPhone without signing up for AT&T's service. Fact is, I have no need to tether my iPhone or iPad, I just want to create an adhoc Wifi network solely for the use of my Apple TV.
I posted this question to the iPhone discussions as well, but thought someone here has wanted to do the same thing.
Someone suggested just bringing any WiFi router and connecting devices to that. But that's not a solution. It's about mobility and simplicity and not creating a larger footprint.
    Thoughts?

I am a presenter and I do what you want to do.  I use an apple tv as the presentation device that connects to the projector. The thing that makes it all work together is the Apple Airport Express $99 and looks just like the APple TV but white:  http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC414LL/A?fnode=MTY1NDA0Mg
Basically you define a wireless network ahead of time (using your iPad or iPhone and the Airport Config App) and let your iDevices connect to it and know the details ahead of time (so they will auto connect later).
You have a couple of options of connecting the airport express to the apple tv.  I basically stacked them and used an ethernet cable but you can define the wireless connection also.  I then strapped them to the projector (which I travel with) and used an HDMI cable from the apple TV to the projector.
Sometimes I present from my iPad...sometimes I present from my iPhone.  Sometimes I present from my iPad but use the remote app on the iPhone to see the next screen.  Now with Mountain Lion you could even present with a Macbook Pro (not needed though)
Wanna hear the coolest thing?  When I want to demo something on the iPad instead of just showing the screen remotely using Airplay I use an App on the iPhone called Air Camera directed down at my iPad screen.  The Air Camera sends the video to the Apple TV using Airplay and people are able to see my taps by seeing my fingers.
Another cool thing in a classroom setting with other iPads you are able to let people know your Wifi password and then display their iPad screen up on a projector to ask a question about something or demo something.
So for the extra $99 dolars for the Airport Express and a few minutes setting it up, wammo you have it!
One last note.  If you actually do have wired internet at the podium you can connect it to the WAN port of the Airport express and all your iDevices would in addition have internet access.  If you need internet access for all the devices and you are presenting in a place without internet then you have to bring a wireless hotspot in place of the airport express.  This works equally well (again just setup the connection from the iDevices to the wireless hotspot ahead of time)
    Have fun and good luck!

  • Problem connecting to public wifi hotspot using ibook and airport

    Hi
I have a brand new iBook G4, replacing an iBook G3. At home I use it to connect wirelessly or wired with my Netgear router. No problems.
Yesterday I tried to access a public, unsecured wifi hotspot in a local cafe. There were two other people there using the net, both using iBooks (high Mac density, it seems!).
Whatever I did, I simply couldn't connect. First, using the same Location I use at home (defined to only use Airport), I could see the named network, but when I selected it I got the 'could not connect' dialog. Retried, no luck.
I then created a new location, configured that to use Airport. Same problem.
I then created a new network name, and tried again. No luck. Using this last option, it actually asked me for a WEP password, even though the network was, in fact, unsecured, and the other users had not been asked this.
I do use WEP protection at home.
Any ideas?? I'd like to be mobile and networked, so I'd really like to fix this!

I presume that the iBook G3 worked fine at the location previously?
Some 802.11b access points require a firmware upgrade before 802.11g (Extreme) clients can connect.
Though 802.11g is backward compatible with 802.11b some older access points were developed before 802.11g and therefore are not in a position to allow the 802.11g clients to connect.
Note that you can attempt to persuade an Airport Extreme client to operate in 802.11b mode.
Hold down the control key [ctrl] when selecting the network from the menu.

  • Public wifi hotspot problems

I’ve read the thread about flaky wifi, but I think the following may be a different issue, as this is not purely wifi connectivity:
I am using a year old MacBook Pro.
It connects fine into my own wifi, and at friends’ homes, hotels etc.
However, it is problematic when it comes to using free-to-use hotspots in public areas.
Typically I can connect right into a wifi system.
Then the procedure is to open the web browser (Safari or Firefox installed), which should be automatically directed to the organisation’s log-in, where you accept their terms and conditions, and off you go.
Sometimes for me this works fine, so if I go into a McDonalds, no problem.
But it often does not, for example I cannot hook into the Orange France Service, nor the Eurotunnnel service and others.
However, in all instances my iPhone works immediately.
Seems to me that something on the MacBook may be misconfigured, and any help to identify and rectify the problem will be much appreciated.

Nothing in your MBP is seriously miss-configured. Most times it's the service. What I do is to create a new location for every public hotspot I visit. Outline the preferences along with ISP (network names) in my Preferred networks list. If a hotspot reacts like the one's that are giving you issues I manually type the hotspots sign-in page in the url address in my browser. Once there I can bookmark that page for the next time it gets buggy.

  • Why am I unable to connect to Public WiFi HotSpots?

My MacBook Pro (late 2010), refuses to connect to most Public WiFi networks. However, my iPhone has no issues. Typically, I will be in a coffee shop or airport lounge. I'll take out my iPhone and launch Safari. Safari will try for a second or two to connect, and then a "Login" page will pop up. Usually it is simply a request to accept the Terms & Conditions for the access provider. Tick the "I Accept" box and continue. Same location, using my MBP, I launch Safari and Safari tries to connect and does nothing. Spinning Beach Ball. I do not get the "Accept" page with the Terms & Conditions. Sounds to me like a Security or "Re direct" Issue. Any ideas why this works with the iPhone and not the MBP? This is a chronic problem for me and I'm getting tired of it. Thanks for any assistance.

Thanks for the suggestion. What you suggest is not the issue. Network Preferences says Airport is Connected and I have an IP Address. Safari picks up the redirect URL but will not display the page. Workaround is to launch another browser, (I use Firefox). Then the Login Page displays correctly. Once logged in using Firefox, I can then launch Safari and all is good. This technique works most of the time. However, there are some sites where the same problem happens with Firefox or any other browser I try. Workaround is to restart in Bootcamp (Windows 7 & IE). This is just not right! I don't seem to be getting many responses so this is likely not a wide spread issue and may perhaps be due to something peculiar to my system.

  • Is there another provider with good Customer Service and good Coverage over Oxford, Main?

    Hi,
    Reason
I am from UK and am trying to find out how best to sign on to a US mobile network and one with the appropriate coverage, as I will be in New England for 3 months, 2 of that around Oxford, Maine. I have joined this forum just hoping for more helpful advice having experienced a very poor Sales & Customer support via both the Web Chat and Phone medium.
    Poor WebChat Support
Earlier whilst finding from the website the network coverage claims by Verizon over the Oxford area, I took up the WebChat support that popped up. The first Chat agent advised Verizon don't do PAYG! Have disappointedly signed off, I reasoned to myself that can't be as there was an option to select Prepaid coverage on the Verizon interactive map! So I persevered with exploring the Verizon website and found a whole section on Prepaid, with a even a dedicated WebChat button on the page. So realising it must have been a terminology misunderstanding, I clicked on the WebChat request to try to ask for any pre-requisites, as when I was last in Canada (Ottawa) to buy a SIM, evidently it is not common to sell PrePaid in Canada. It was over an hour to get one sorted because of all sort of procedures. The second Chat agent at least admit he didn't know what is PAYG- then even when I spelt it out he only understood it as another term for Prepaid- then advised he can't help me (even though I later found out it is even the actual name of one of your number of Prepaid Plans available!)! Instead he informed I best call Customer Support on 9085594899 despite reminding him I am in the UK. When I asked about hours of service and the time difference (being at 17:00 hrs in the UK) - he told me not to worry as it's 24 hours support!
    Poor Phone Support
The number given turned out to be only for Roaming and Mobile data support only! The first option requiring a registered number which obviously I don't have, so selecting the second the call just got cut-off eventually after ringing on unanswered! Frustrated I found via the Contact Us link the supposedly 24 hours number for Pre-paid Customers 8882946804. After finding the one option to speak to an agent without having to key in a registered mobile number first (I think Credit Card payment), again the call just got cut-off eventually after ringing on unanswered. Then thought may be best try the Consumer Sales line 08002564646 given on the page, and it finally got answered but turns out to be for Business account only (which is a different number according to the webpage!) At least the Business Account agent heard my problem and agreed to stay online until she successfully transfer me to a Prepaid agent. The Prepaid agent on the otherhand couldn't be less helpful. Completely ignored my query on any pre-requistes to sign on any Prepaid plans just wanted to know which Prepaid plans I was interested in and then just rolled off the tariffs for the plan I happened to mention and wanted to get me off the phone. I had to ask her again for any other common requirements - she just say I pay for the tariff plan! No interest to talk me through the process.
Extra item only identified on FORUM under a topic "pay as you go activation fee?"
Yet with such poor assisstance from the formal sales/customer service that I thought to try to search for better awareness within the Forum.  To my surprise it was only here I learn of  an activation fee to add to any Prepaid plan irrespective of Phone in Box or Customer own Device! As explained by AyaniB_VZW .
Whereupon I gone back to the Verizon Wireless website on Prepaid plans and below is all that it has summarised with the relevant words highlighted in RED by me- NO mention of Activation Fee. Where will I find this activation fee identified on the Prepaid plans pages rather 'hidden' behind small print/ T&C link? As it seems Verizon has good coverage and range of Prepaid options - but inadvisable to incurr any issues or queries after taking up the service.
    "Prepaid Plan
    Get Freedom & Flexibility
The wireless service you want. No annual contract. Join over 5 million prepaid wireless users on America’s most reliable wireless network with no credit check, no hidden fees or charges and no bills.
    How it works:
Simply pay up front to enjoy unlimited talk, text and a prepaid data plan on your 3G smartphone. If you go over your data allowance, pay just 5¢ per megabyte."
Where did I miss the activation fee term when signing onto PrePaid Plan on the Verizon Wireless site?

<This discussion is now closed for crossposting violations per the Verizon Wireless Terms of Service.  See Visiting States for three months for any replies.>

  • Very frustrated with poor customer service and lack of integrity

Earlier today my wife and I bought a TV from your Huntsville, AL store (removed per forum guidelines). We were looking at your 32" TVs and had several questions about them. After flagging down a sales associate, we questioned the pricing of several TVs. They were advertised under the display as one price, then where the inventory was at, were labeled a different price. The sales person confirmed that the smaller price was the correct price and the displays were incorrectly labeled. We proceeded to pick out a 32" Vizio E320I-B1/E3 TV that was labeled $219.99 where it was stocked (There were two rows of this TV all labeled $219.99) and the display was labeled $259.99. Again, I flagged down the sales associate (Taylor) on the floor and questioned the display pricing vs the shelf pricing. He AGAIN confirmed that the shelf pricing was the correct pricing and the display pricing was for a different model. We proceeded to check out, purchased a 2 year protection plan along with an HDMI cord and were on our way, new TV in tow. On the way home we reviewed the receipt and noticed we had been charged incorrectly for the TV. It rang up as 259.99 even though it was clearly labeled 219.99 and we had verified TWICE with an associate that 219.99 was the correct price. We went back to the store, thinking we would be refunded the difference. After spending over 30 minutes with customer service explaining what happened, customer service informed us that they could not refund the difference even after we showed them where the TVs were at and priced as 219.99 AND verified with the sales associate that he had confirmed that price with us TWICE. We then returned the TV for a full refund, to which my money is still tied up in the transaction until sometime next week (all for a TV that was FRAUDULENTLY sold to me!!). Not only was it mislabeled, but your sales associate told me TWO times that the labeling was correct. I am disappointed with the lack of customer service that we received. It is beyond frustrating to me that your company is unable to honor a $40 error in pricing that your very own sales associate confirmed. I believe that the store was 100% at fault for this situation and am more than displeased with the original situation and the events that followed. I consider it a disgusting lack of integrity to fraudulently sell a customer an item and refuse to right the situation when able. There is no doubt in my mind that the store manager (Cedric) or division manager could have authorized the TV to be sold at the price listed (and confirmed by the sales associate twice!) but they simply chose not to.  Prior to today I had a positive view of Best Buy and considered it my store of choice for many items. My wife even did seasonal work for this store several years prior. Unfortunately, I will no longer choose to give my money to a cooperation that does not value integrity, honesty, and accountability. I understand that you are a large corporation and my few purchases probably won't even put a dent in your profit margin, but I would just like to remind you that I represent your entire customer base. If this is the type of customer service that your company prides itself on, then I am sure this is only one of many incidents. I find that extremely unfortunate. I will now be purchasing the same TV from another company for $259.99 (where it was actually labeled correctly, and the sales associate is able to accurately confirm the pricing). My future business will not be with you after today.

    Hello lauralou1105,
Purchasing a new TV should be fun, exciting, and straightforward, and not be complicated by unclear signage and conflicting information. I very much regret that this was your experience at the Huntsville store.
I completely understand your conclusion that -- after the attempts to verify pricing that you made -- you should have had no questions and no surprises about the cost of the TV after purchase. Did Cedric give you any explanation as to why the TV you bought rang up at a different price or for his not honoring the display pricing?
It is wholly disheartening to hear that this experience may influence how you shop in the future. It is my hope that you will one day give Best Buy another chance to win you over.
Please know that I'm grateful that you shared your experience with us.
    Sincerely,

  • Issues with creating a wifi hotspot with Macbook Pro

Hello. I am staying in a hotel with others for an extended period of time. There is only one ethernet port. I have previously used the ethernet via internet sharing to turn my macbook pro into a wifi hotspot. I went through the steps this time (checked, double-checked, and triple-checked via various websites), and though my computer says that it is broadcasting, AND all the other devices (iPhones, other laptops) can see and connect to the network, no internet seems to be coming through the broadcasted connection.
What I mean is, the network exists, and when others connect it shows full signal in their airports, etc, but they still can't connect to the internet. Pages won't load, my iphone tells me that it's "not connected to the internet" even though it has full wifi bars. Is there some important step that I'm missing? I am running Snow Leopard.
When I did this before, I feel like there was some other strange option I either had to enable or disable, but that was a long time ago and I can't recall. Right now, I just go into internet sharing, set "ethernet" as broadcasted from, and "airport" as broadcasted to, then I name the network and click "Start" and everything seems to work, except for the not actually being connected. Can anybody explain this?

I can indeed get on with just my Mac, as can my roommate (he also has a Macbook Pro). I have not tried turning off my firewall. That may do it. However, I do not know how to turn off my firewall. I could just google it, but I figure I'll ask y'all anyway.

  • Connect iPad 2 wifi to wifi hotspot with joikuspot

I installed joikuspot light in my nokia E71, and my iPad recognized the wifi hotspot but I still can't access Internet. Pls help

I also had the same problem, but I realized this person (Baltax) who shared in this forum how to resolve this issue. He is a god-send.

Had the same problem; I connected with the device but couldn´t browse internet. Turned out to be an encryption issue; to make it work I used (in the settings for Joikuspot) WEP open, ascii, 128 bit, and let Joikuspot create the password for me. Using this it worked flawlessly.

  • How can i create wifi hotspot with WPA for windows laptops?

I using Macbook with Mac OS X Mountain Lion. I can't create a wifi network with WPA Protected Access. I can create with 40bit protection access but i can't with windows..

No, not unless Apple introduce it for the iPad 2 in a future iOS update - but until if/when that happens you won't be able to use it as a personal hotspot.

  • Basic auth with RESTful WEb service and Web Service reference

    Hi, All,
We have made much progress on getting an application working wtih RESTful web services but now are trying to figure out how to lock down a RESTful Web service while making it available for a particular application.
We are using one of the sample 'emp' table web services that come with Apex 4.2 and are trying to apply Basic Auth to the WEb Service via Weblogic filter defined in the web.xml file. That works fine. I now get challenged when I try to go to :
    https://wlogic.edu/apex/bnr/ace/hr/empinfo/
And when I authenticate to that challenge I am able to get the data. (we are usiing LDAP authentication at the Weblogic level)
However, I am not sure how to get same basic authentication to work with the Web Service reference in my application. I see the error message in the application when I try to call that Web Service:
    401--Unauthorized<
    And I see:
"The request requires user authentication. The response MUST include a WWW-Authenticate header field (section 14.46) containing a challenge applicable to the requested resource. The client MAY repeat the request with a suitable Authorization header field (section 14.8). If the request already included Authorization credentials"
How do I provide the credentials in the Web REference or do I provide credentials in the Application?
Web service works fine if I remove the RESTful web service basic auth from the Web.xml file.
Should we NOT use Weblogic basic auth and instead use basic auth from Workspace RESTful web service definition. If so, how do we implement THAT basic auth in the Web Service definition and in the Web SErvice Reference on the application?
    Thanks,
    Pat

What I mean is diid you try to use the PL/SQL package for APEX webservice. Here is an example I use (modified and shortened, just to show how much better this is than to use it from the application).
