Purpose of SQL Developer

Hi,
I am not sure if I understand the real purpose of SQL Developer being a free database developer tool allowing to connect to RDBMS from vendors competing with Oracle.
Does SQL Developer allow the use of connecting to competing RDBMS systems solely for migration purposes?
Thanks,
Mike Gouders

Many companies have different databases in-house. By providing a single interface to different databases, users can quickly browse non-Oracle databases to compare structures or review data, without having to open other products.
The integration with the Migration Workbench also allows users to review the data and data structures before and after migration.

  • What's the purpose of SQL Developer's remote debug?

AS per SQL Developer's "Remote debuggin", the user guide says "To debug a function or procedure for a
connection where the database is on a different
host than the one on which you are running SQL Developer, you can perform remote debugging."
I'm confused what's the prupose to do a remote debugging? Could you please give me a
scenario to help me clarify this term?
    Thank you!
    Jeff

Mmm, don't know if the database should really be on another host, but anyway it would be a characteristic, not a definition.
Remote debugging differs from normal debugging in the origin of the debugged session:
For normal debugging, you start a new session from within sqldev (local) and hook into the debugger (pretty easy and automated). For remote debugging, you hook whatever existing session (started from whatever program) on whatever host (remote) into the debugger (a bit more manual as you have to include the call to hook into the debugger yourself). Very useful for debugging remote sessions over a database link or a particular remote user situation which cannot be reproduced locally.
    Have fun,
    K.

  • Oracle D2k or sql developer

    Hi to all!
I have completed ocp recently. Now I want to learn oracle developer. I would like to know Which software have to be installed to start with. Is it Oracle D2k. What is the purpose of SQL developer and PL/SQL Developer. Are they entirely different from each other.

Why not do some research and determine for yourself?

Yes - It's surprising that you even ask that question since you had to agree to those license issues before you were allowed to download the product.
All users need to agree to the license agreement. See

  • How can I use an existing local svn workspace with SQL Developer?

I have a couple directories of files on my local drive that hold my current working files from the svn repository. I use both TortoiseSVN and Cygwin to keep the local files in sync with the repository, depending on my mood. I have created a connection to the repository in SQL Developer, and I can browse the repository just fine. My goal is to have SQL Developer play nice with the local files, just like the other two Subversion clients do. Is there a way I can inform SQL Developer of my local files without re-importing them through the Versioning -> Import... wizard, without changing anything (or putting anything at risk) in the local workspace?
Thanks in advance for your help -
    Wally

Then can her computer be authorized to both accounts?
Absolutely. You can authorize any given computer to up to five iTunes Store accounts.
If purchases are made on her account, to a computer authorized to my account, can I put those songs on my iPod?
If you connect your iPod to her computer, yes. Tracks download only to the computer from which they're purchased, regardless of which iTunes Store account is used for the purchase. Or you could copy the tracks from her computer to yours and then authorize your computer to her iTunes Store account. But that's sort of defeating the original purpose, it would seem to me.
is it better to buy music through Amazon downloads and/or actually purchasing CDs to avoid the security features iTunes puts on its music?
That's certainly an option. If it's an entire album I want, I buy CDs. That way I can import them at the quality I want and to whichever of my systems I want. Amazon or one of the other download stores that offer tracks as MP3 are also an option, though for me download stores are best when you just want a couple of tracks off a given CD.

  • TNS_ADMIN not respected, or how do I get sql developer to see my tnsnames

When I installed sql developer at home with a 'static' tnsnames.ora file, sql-developer picked it up right away, and I was able to use the 'connect identifier' pull down menu.
However, at work, all of developer's computers have a TNS_ADMIN registry set pointing to a network share. Sql developer fails to recognize that. The purpose of this is central administration of the file (changes happen at least once a month)
Is there are a way to make it see our tnsnames.ora file? Is there are some kind of workaround (besides copying the file locally)
    Thanks.

Unfortunately, because SQL Developer is set up to allow an install without any local Oracle client, it is not wonderful at picking up some things from the local Oracle client when it is there - such as the TNS_ADMIN setting.
Assuming you are on an Windows box, rather than having your TNS_ADMIN set in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Oracle registry 'directory', you need to have a Windows environment variable set for TNS_ADMIN (it doesn't matter if this is a User environment variable or a System environment variable). I assume (but don't know) that on a Linux based version you need a Unix environment variable set.
For example on Windows XP, right click on My Computer and select the Properties menu option. On that page, select the Advanced tab and then the Environment Variables button. Then click on the New button (in either the System or User section) and enter the variable name TNS_ADMIN and the variable value that you are using in the registry (ie z:\orant\network\admin).

  • Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler 3.0 Bugs, Resolution and workarounds

The purpose of this thread is to list bugs discovered while using ORACLE SQL Developer Data Modeler 3.0
Mainly with SQL SERVER 2005 and ORACLE 10g models.

SQL Server Physical model doesn't save table identity column.
here are the steps to get this bug:
    1. create a table in relational model with a column as an integer to be used as an identity.
    2. create or open a physical model for SQL-SERVER 2005
    3. open the table in the physical model
    4. edit the integer column property dialog
    5. tick the identity check box and close the property dialog
    6. save the model and close it
    7. open it again, you will find the identity check is removed! (probably not saved from the start)

  • Sql Developer - View source code of procedures, functions & packages in another schema

Our developers need the ability to view procedures, function, packages etc. in the production database (using SQL DEVELOPER).  They don't have access to sign on as the owner of these
objects in Production.  They must use their own limited access UserID for this purpose.
This limited access UserID has been granted select privilege on DBA_SOURCE & DBA_OBJECTS.  The developers need the ability to view the source of these object via
the tree view in SQL DEV.  They should be able to click on "other users" in the SQL DEV tree view and see a listing of the owner schema objects.  Then they should
be able to select the desired object and view the source code.  These developers are used to using GUI interfaces.  Selecting from DBA_SOURCE would not be an
    option for them.
I understand that if the limited user is granted SELECT ANY DICTIONARY or SELECT_CATALOG_ROLE then this functionality will work.  The problem is those
privileges/roles  provide much more access than should be granted to these limited access users. Granting DBA to these users is also not an option.
In TOAD and other end-user tools this functionality works when only select privilege on DBA_SOURCE & DBA_OBJECTS has been granted.  We need this same functionality
    in SQL DEV.
While searching this forum and the internet, I see that other installations have this same issue.
Please enhance SQL Developer with this functionality.
    Thank you, ellen

Just to double check that I'm interpreting the problem correctly, is the following true:
    select * from all_objects where object_name = 'DBA_SOURCE'
    returns nothing
select * from dba_source where name = your PL/SQL module
    returns all the code

  • How to create partitioned bitmap index in SQL Developer?

I am running SQL Developer version 3.0.04.34 ; on Windows 7 (64 bit) against:
Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition Release 11.1.0.7.0 - 64bit Production
    PL/SQL Release 11.1.0.7.0 - Production
    CORE     11.1.0.7.0     Production
TNS for Linux: Version 11.1.0.7.0 - Production
    NLSRTL Version 11.1.0.7.0 - Production
I am trying to create a bitmap index on a partitioned fact table which is part of a data warehouse. The index is in support of a single-column foreign-key to a dimension table. Heretofore, we had been using partitioned B-Tree indexes. According to the Data Warehousing Guide, we should consider using bitmap indexes for this purpose. Accordingly, I was trying to create such an index in our development environment. I used SQL Developer to edit the table, and attempted to create a bitmap index using the advanced screen from the index edit screen. I changed the partition type to "Local" from "None" using the radio button. When I attempt to save this change, I get an error message "A bitmap index cannot have a global partition". This happens whether or not I have assigned storage for the partitions. The index partition names are the ones used successfully for the existing B-tree indexes. I can create the SQL for the index creation by hand, but it would be simpler and easier to maintain if I could use SQL Developer.
Any help on this issue would be appreciated.
    Vin Steele

There is a radio button for index type in the New Index... dialog and in the index section of the edit table dialog.
Which version of SQL Developer are you using?

  • PL/SQL development with JDeveloper

We are using Toad and JDeveloper to maintain our legacy IS that count thousands of PL/SQL code object (Packages, Package Bodies, Triggers).
I'm using JDeveloper and SQL Developer in the perspective to verify if it is possible and effective to use only Oracle tools in the project.
I like to work with JDeveloper to edit pl/sql code and i like to have my code in database offline object maintained into subversion.
I'm able to compile these sources in my different platform (development system, test alpha, test beta and final testing instance directly from JDeveloper.
That's fine except JDeveloper didn't return a compile status or a list of compile errrors like in SqlDeveloper. So I need to use SqlDeveloper in parallel of JDeveloper.
This is the beginning of my problems.
SqlDeveloper may have some editor open with source code into I updated into JDeveloper (depends on the change to do, some changes a done in SqlDeveloper to correct some errors and the code is refreshed from the instance into JDeveloper, and more important changes are done in JDeveloper and compiled (loaded) in the instance) and loaded (compiled) into my instance.
When the packages tree is already displayed in SqlDeveloper, the status of the package (valid, invalid) didn't change immediately. That is normal because SqlDeveloper don't know i change it from JDeveloper. I think it check it when i click on the package or the body node. The problem is that the code is not reloaded into the editor if it is opened and i you recompile your package without refreshing all the packages list you will recompile the older version and search sometimes a long time why your package didn't compile after the changes you done in JDeveloper (mainly after 6pm and a day of developing and compiling ) !!!!
The only reason to use both JDeveloper and SqlDeveloper in this phase is the fact that JDeveloper didn't return compile status and a compile error list.
With theses features I will no more use SqlDeveloper for such developing purposes (still using it to debug, obtain object definition, customize database object for some physical properties, etc) and avoid those bad manipulations.

    micwic --
    I logged bug6508875 for this.
One suggestion in the meantime until we can get compile errors directed to the log window for offline objects...
You can open the Database Navigator to point to the same db connection. After generating the offline PL/SQL to the db, refresh the connection in the DB navigator. You will see any invalid objects flagged with an error icon. Then you can right-click on the PL/SQL with the error, and "Make" it. This will display the errors in the log window, similar to SQL Developer.

  • Logon trigger setting nls_date_format over ridden by sql developer?

Problem: Developers are inserting a Date record into a varchar field. I can't change this process right now. Non-Date info is stored here also. Would require a code change.
To simplify this, I wanted to get all the developers to insert using the same 'nls_date_format'. I had hoped to be able to centralize this by having Oracle set it in the database. I tried this by setting the database nls_date_format and with a logon trigger.
See test below. Seems to be over ridden.
Test case is with SQL Developer. Noticed the same thing when developers use Websphere. I think we reduce the chance for errors, if I can handle this in the database. However, my nls_date_format settings are getting over ridden.
    1. s et database parameter nls_date_format to YYYY-MM-DD HH24:MI:SS , this gets over riden by SQL Developer/Websphere
    2. Created a trigger with an 'alter session', but this seems to get over ridden also.
    Please see test case below:
    Oracle 11.2.0.3
test logging: SQLPLUS locally on the unix server, then log in using SQL Developer which is installed on my laptop.
SQL Developer NLS_DATE_FORMAT : YYYY-MON-DD HH24:MI:SS , This is different for test purposes
I have auditing turned turned on to db,extended with 'audit all by 'user' by access;' for test purposes to get more info.
    create table test (username varchar2(30),sid number,mytest varchar2(300),insert_date date);
    create or replace
    TRIGGER LOGINTRG
    AFTER LOGON ON DATABASE
    BEGIN
    insert into test select user,   sys_context('USERENV','SID') ,value,sysdate from v$parameter where name = 'nls_date_format';
    EXECUTE IMMEDIATE 'ALTER SESSION SET NLS_DATE_FORMAT=''YYYY-MM-DD HH24:MI:SS''';
    insert into test select user,   sys_context('USERENV','SID') ,value,sysdate from v$parameter where name = 'nls_date_format';
    commit;
    END LOGINTRG;
    /Results/Questions
    1. When I select from 'test', I confirm that my NLS_DATE_FORMAT is the same both before and after the alter session.
    2. select value from v$parameter where name = 'nls_date_format'
    output: YYYY-MON-DD HH24:MI:SS (so sql developer is over riding this);
    3. select * from dba_audit_trail where username = 'MYUSER' order by timestamp desc;
The SQLs from the logon trigger are not captured. how do I capture logon trigger sqls? Not a huge deal, just curious
    4. I do not see any alter sessions issued by my user. shouldn't audit all by access capture that? how could my session nls_date_format change without an alter session?

    >
No - they aren't. That is physically impossible. The only thing that can be stored in a 'varchar field' is a string. Oracle considers ANYTHING stored in a character column to be a string.
Date values are stored in DATE columns. Perhaps you meant that developers are converting DATE values to strings and then storing the string in a 'varchar field'?
    >
I can't change this process right now. Non-Date info is stored here also.
    >
WONDERFUL! Why use a column to stored just one type of data? That is extremely wasteful. Hopefully you store strings that represent numbers in that same column also? It makes the data model so much easier to understand if developers only need to learn one datatype.
    >
    Would require a code change.
    >
    The horror!
You should never, ever, EVER use a code change to fix a problem if there is even the slightest possibility that you can change the ENTIRE DATABASE instead.
I've got good news though. You are now on version Oracle 11.2.0.3 and Oracle, after months of protests by some of their largest clients, has finally dropped the exhorbitant license fees for using some of the more esoteric datatypes like DATE and NUMBER.
You should suggest to your manager that they use some of the license fee money saved to hire developers that already know how to design proper data models and use those new-fangled datatypes.
Trust me - once you've made it up that steep learning curve your code will have fewer of those pesky 'dirty data' issues to deal with.
Sure - it means less job security for your current developers. But sometimes you just have to 'take one for the team'!

  • New Connection in SQL Developer

    Hi all,
Everything went well from the setting up of APEX, SQL DEV to the exporting of the Northwind DB. I am now trying to create a connection with the credentials in the application migration workshop pdf. I came across the following error : Listener does not currently know of SID given in connect descripter....
tried to use 10GR2 which was specified and XE, the one of my database...
can someone please help me in this regard, urgently.
    Thanks in Advance
    Melvin

    Hi Melvin,
I'm not sure which connection you are trying to make. You mention that you are trying to make a connection using the credentials in the application migration workshop pdf - which credentials are you talking about? Please note that any username/password/host/SID information used in the documentation is for demonstration purposes. You should supply the information that corresponds with your environment. Is "10GR2" the SID for your Oracle Database instance? Please ensure that you use the connection details that correspond with your own database instance.
If you are attempting to create a connection in Oracle SQL Developer to the newly migration Oracle schema, then ensure that the username/password combination you supply corresponds with the user created at the top of the generated DDL statements by the Migration Workbench e.g. if your database is called Northwind, then you can expect the username/password combination to be northwind/northwind.
If you are attempting to create a connection to the Oracle database for your Migration Repository, please ensure that the user you are connecting as has the required privileges necessary for carrying out a migration. Please refer to the Migration documentation in Oracle SQL Developer for further information.
    I hope this helps.
    Regards,
    Hilary
