Put iTunes on ext. HD, music still going to "C" drive

I have a laptop with a relatively small hard drive, so I bought a 40 GB USB external hard drive to store my iTunes and music on.
The iTunes installed fine on the "E" drive, but my uploaded music is still goung to C://my documents/my music/iTunes.
How do I get my music uploads to go to the "E:" drive?

I have a MacBook Air. I'm getting an external hard drive and plan to copy all of my files, including music, to it from my family Mac Pro. I am planning to keep the music on the external drive as there is not enough room on my laptop. I want to be able to use my playlists from the Mac Pro on my MacBook Air while the music is still on the external drive. Is this possible?

Drag the entire iTunes library, not just the iTunes Media folder, to the external drive, launch iTunes with the Option key held down, and choose that library. Your playlists will come across.

Trouble getting iTunes to sync with music on my external hard drive

PLEASE HELP ME! I recently moved all of my music to my external hard drive to free up space on my computer. I have all the original files on my hard drive now, but (perhaps stupidly) deleted all the files from my actual computer. Now, I'm afraid I can't get all my ratings, last time played, number of plays, playlists, etc. back.
This is basically what I did:
1. Moved music from computer to External
2. In my iTunes preferences menu, I changed my "iTunes Music Folder Location" to the same original folder on my external hard drive.
My problem is that after I did that, iTunes didn't automatically add all my files back into the program. Now, it seems like I've got to add everything back one by one and everything without my customized info (#plays, recently played/added, rating, playlists, etc).
Will someone please just talk to me about this since AppleCare represetatives refuse to deal with problems that have absolutely anything to do with products that aren't made by them....even though I bought the thing at an Apple Store. I'm not sure if I'm giving the right info...I just need someone to ask me the right questions! PLEASE!

It refers to iTunes 4 but works for iTunes 6. Notice step 14. Leave the iTunes Library & iTunes Music Library files in the ~/Music/iTunes folder on your internal HD. This is where iTunes, also other iLife apps, expect to find them.

I recently have started organising my 'my music' files and deleting folders with more than 3 copies of songs, I have a lot of music 2500 songs and opened up itunes and all music I have imported (not bought) has gone, my music is still on my ipod though but I'm too scared to sync it in case all my music has gone, I still have my original music in 'my music' file but it's not shown up on library as usual PLEASE HELP!

If I buy music in iTunes USA will my music still work in Denmark?

So I've been in America for over a year and I've bought quite a lot of the American iTunes such as movies and music, but I have to go back home to Denmark soon and I was wondering if my music I bought will still work or how that work? Cause I would really be unhappy if I had to go buy it all again..
Anyone who have done this? Lived in one place and bought music trough that iTunes Store and the moved to another country? Please help me.

HT4623 my iphone 4 is going through the ios 7 update via itunes. the syncing is still going on for almost an hour. why is this taking so long?

After trying EVERYTHING this is the ONLY thing that worked-
I took the USB connector cable out of the USB port it was in, and tried another one on the otherside of my laptop and iTunes was able to discover my phone in recovery mode. My phone was reset and everything is fine ( thank gosh for backup copies!)

How do I set up iTunes to read my music from my external hard drive after I have changed to a new computer with new operating software (previously WinXP now Win7)?

Before I got my new computer (which was operating on Windows XP), I successfully moved my itunes library to my external hard drive and ran it off that so as not to take up space on my laptop. I now have a new computer which runs off of Windows 7. I've tried going to iTunes-->preferences-->advanced-->"itunes media folder location" and pointing it to my external hard drive but it still doesn't show my library. What do I need to do to make my iTunes library on my new computer read my iTunes library off of my external hard drive?

As Chris says... but if the media is on an external drive as above then you also need to make sure the external drive has the same drive letter on the system you are moving to or iTunes won't be able to find the files.

ITunes cannot locate my music from my external hard drive

I am using the most uptodate software for mac book and itunes. Having followed all other discussions and located the media folder using preferences itunes still cannot locate my music, this is really frustating! All of my music is the the itunes media folder within the itunes folder on my external harddrive and it still wont find the music. Futher to this my library should have about 50,000 songs in it but itunes library is only showing 354 songs that all have the ! sign beside them.
Please can someone help me as this is annoying!
PS. this method worked fine on my windows until itunes had updated, since the recent update and my move to macbook pro my media cannot be found

Oops, excuse me I think I misread the initial problem.
This solution might be more on track, though I don't understand why the 354 songs your library does list are broken...
Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping. In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.

ITunes unable to locate music files saved on external drive

Hi all,
This is proabably something incredibly simple but my iTunes was installed on to my laptop wih music added till my memory was all used up.
So I bought an external drive, and re-added all my music saving it to the external drive, my iTunes however remained installed directly on my laptop.
This worked fine initially as long as my external drive was selected in the Preferences section of my Itunes, but recently all my albums are available but it says that Itunes is unable to locate the files, even though none of them have been lost or deleted from the external drive.
Ive tried everything I can think of - does anyone know how to rectify this?

I switched computers and tried to reload all my backed up itunes files. It loaded the files fine the first time. After I logged off the files disappeared from my Itunes. Apple tech told me to add itunes folder to library. It worked fine until i logged off again. I tried it several times because my files never stayed on itunes. Finnaly I added two new CD's into my library and I went to file Libray and I entered consolidated Library. This brought everything I had before and then some to my itunes library. I logged off, shutdown and even hibernated and my files still remain. I was able to create playlist, my movies, podcast, there all there. Hope this helps.

How can i get Itunes to route my music to an external hard drive once my Internal drive is full?

My Internal hard drive is getting full and im starting to worry about how i will store tracks in the future. I have my itunes set to auto organize the files into the Music folder when dragged into Itunes. I am a DJ, so i do get music quiet frequently that i need to add to Itunes for My DJ Software, Serato, To read. Is there anyway i can have Itunes begin rerouting the new songs onto an external HD? and can i play songs from two different hard drives with itunes open? Example, Song A is on internal.. once i finish listening to it or having serato acess it, If i then want to play Song B, which is on an external HD, will Itunes need to "Relocate the file" or will it remember its stored on the connected External HD?

Cache setting still going to OS drive

With the latest release the ability to change the cache direcroy is in but it doesn't work. I have it pointing to a backup hardrive but the app data directory is still growing close to gig now with just switching it and deleting the old content.

Hey, this is ridiculous! Spoitfy now saves all its fragments to the C:\ in case of Windows 7, consuming the space on my SSD! How do i get itunes 11 to stop adding music played from external hard drive to itunes library

I use itunes 11 to play music from my external hard drive and when i am finished using the hard drive and disconnect it the artist and songs appear in the itunes libary and when i click on it to play them it cannot locate the file and i assume this is becuse under the advanced prefrences tab i unchecked the auomaticly add played music to itunes library. I do not want my external hard drive music to be added to itunes library which at this point it does not but it is still showing the music in the library even though it cannot be played this is very fustrating please help. how do i get the artist and songs played from the external hardrive from appering in the itunes library.

Do you have a working copy of the library anywhere? The key file is called iTunes Library.itl and normally exists inside <User's Music>\iTunes. This is the file that knows what is in your library and each of the playlists, and holds ratings, play counts etc. Changing the media folder path in preferences tells iTunes where you'd like it to store media in future. It doesn't magically connect iTunes to any media that might already be there, or fix links to media that has been moved, or make it pick up a non-existent library file. If the worst comes to it you will need to import the media into the new empty library.
See Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device if you have any of these to recover ratings, play stats and playlists, and to associate your device with the new library.

my hard drive on my laptop crashed and I got a new one installed...I kept all my itunes music on an external hard drive, and that is ok. I have reinstalled itunes on my laptop, but how do I get itunes to read the music from my external hard drive??

When you say "when i double click on my itunes files it just opens up this list of music." it doesn't mean anything to me. You need to explain clearly, remember I only know what you tell me.
I need to understand how you have things set up and if you had you iTunes library database on the external drive or the c: drive. That is the iTunes folder containing iTunes library.itl.
What do you see when you open iTunes on the new PC, are your music files there. If not, every time you play a track it gets added to itUnes so you should at least have some files in your library.
What problem are you trying to solve? Is just getting the tracks into your iTunes library, or are you also concerned about ratings, count and playlists from the old PC. If so do you still have access to the old PC?
