Putting a favicon on yoursite...

Ok, Does anyone know how to put a favicon on your site?
You know the little icon next the url in safari and sometimes internet explorer...
I have a logo/pic that I want there. I am a non .mac user. I have a domain and hosting through godaddy. I upload iWeb through an FTP app.
Can it be done through iWeb? Or is this a godaddy thing?
thanks!

Hi,
And I don't mean to answer secondary questions in the orginal questioner's thread either, but the answer may be helpful to everyone who visits the thread. So, here goes... my understanding is that favicons will only display in a browser from a root directory of a domain. HOWEVER, the second domain I listed earlier http://cranberrythistle.com is actually in a directory folder within the other domain http://qualifiedinspector.com. This is how my hosting server http://routhost.com adds domains under a user account. In that case, the favicon is in the same directory folder as the index.html file for the cranberrythistle.com site. So... I guess the yahoo site would work if you placed your favicon in the same directory as your index file.

    I put a Favicon on my website, which can be seen in the adress line and the tab header. However, when I add this site to the bookmarks, it doesn't show it's favicon. I have tried deleting and creating a bookmark and also refreshing the webpage or clicking on the bookmark. I don't know what else to do. I use Firefox 4.0.1

    I'm getting favicons for most of my bookmarks, so there might be some issue with the coding or the image format.
    Do you use a tag like this in your page?
    <link rel="shortcut icon" href="/path/to/favicon.ico"/>

  • Where do we put the favicon.ico?

    I know that we have to put it in our file in idisk but where exactly?
    Thank you
    Odette

    If you're hosting your site with MobileMe and have a domain name which you're forwarding with CNAME forwarding you just put the ico file in your iDIsk/Web/Sites folder.
    If you're hosting to a 3rd party server you put the file in the same folder/directory that you upload your site to.
    If you're hosting your site to MobileMe without a domain name put the favicon.ico file in the iDisk/Web/Sites folder and add the following code to an HTML snippet on each page:
    <script type="text/javascript">
    var head = parent.document.getElementsByTagName("head")[0];
    var favicon = parent.document.createElement("link");
    favicon.rel = ("shortcut icon");
    favicon.href = ("http://web.me.com/your_MobileMe_Account_name/favicon.ico");
    head.appendChild(favicon);
    </script>

  • In need of favicon assistance

    I've read some insightful suggestions from several people here, but am having a heck of a time trying to put a favicon on my website.
    I've followed scripting directions, but I guess I'm looking for an idiot's guide (the idiot would be me) step by step (and I mean basic step) on how to put a favicon on a website using iWeb.
    Facts:
    1) I have a favicon created using graphic converter.
    2) I've placed the favicon where I thought it should be in the website folder I'm publishing to (not a .mac account)...and have changed the paths suggested (the "<link rel=" text)
    3) I feel competent to handle iWeb and have published personal pages, but am struggling when it gets too technical.......
    Thanks for any help....

    Will is right and if you don't mind me barging in Will, I would like to mention the most underated browser on the Mac and that is Camino so I generally encourage Mac users to try Camino if they don't want Safari.

    It's more Mac like than Firefox, but either will be superior to IE.

  • Favicon on MobileMe web site won't display with Safari - OK with Firefox

    I have a web site published to MobileME using iWeb - I have added a favicon and updated HTML accordingly. Now after trying every combination of code and searching the Safari, iWeb and MobileMe forums I cannot figure out why my favicon will not display using Safari but will with just about every other browser (Firefox, IE, Netscape are the ones I've tried on a Windows PC - also won't dispaly using Safari for Windows). Any ideas???
    I've put the favicon file in the web.me.com/pat.schafer/web/sites folder as well as the web.me.com/pat.schafer/web/sites/sitename folder and added the HTML ref code to every html file - I'm going crazy.

    Hi Certified - tried your tips to no avail. I'm beginning to think it's some interaction (bug??) when using a site published to MobileMe (and iWeb?) and Safari. Note I also tried using Windows Safari on a PC which had never viewed the site and it still showed the Apple favico but as previously stated Firefox, and IE on this PC did show my favicon. (I have not tried to load Firefox on my iMac but may try this as well.) I'd try the Apple Support Center but I don't hold up much hope of their being able to assist - I was at the Genius Bar yesterday in the Sydney shop on another matter (broken mouse) and asked about this favicon issue and was told it was beyond the scope of what they can assist with.
    Hello Old Toad - thanks anyway for the tip on the OVI slideshow - also thanks to your earlier tips on using OVI I did know about the trick of using a transparent shape but had got around to doing this - I'm still in the early stages of learning using iWeb ... the site in question is just a bit of a "sandbox". In fact I'm pretty much on my way to a bookshop to get a book an HTML and other web design technologies - clearly one must really understand the underlying technology to make these things work.

  • Wiki Server Favicon?

    Does anyone know how to set a Favicon to a specific Wiki in Apple's Wiki Server?  I have about 5 Wiki's and I'd like to have a different Favicon for each one.  Where do I save the Favicon file?  If you are only limited to one Favicon for the entire server, where would I put the Favicon file?
    Thanks for your help!

    OK I've figured out...
    Basically, what's written in Extending_Your_Wiki_Server.pdf applies to this particular subject.
    Therefore, as written at the bottom of page 27 and after, you copy all the .xsl files from /usr/share/wikid/lib/apple_templates to your chosen wiki theme folder (located inside /Library/Application Support/Apple/WikiServer/Themes/), then edit default.xsl that you copied to specify the custom favicon.
    (You may place your custom favicon file inside /Library/WebServer/Documents/ .)
    Some caveats:
    You have to copy all the .xsl files, not only default.xsl.
    You have to change the xsl:include paths in every .xsl files you copied so that they point to the new .xls files in the Themes folder.
    The obove paths to the Themes folder porbably include Application Support, which you must write Application%20Support in order to make it work properly.
    You have to restart the web service so that the modifications take effect.
    And in order to have different favicons for each wiki site you have to make different wiki theme for each one and repeat the same thing.

  • Preloader for pages in iWeb?

    (Please don't lock this thread)
    I know there is other threads with this topic. But They dont discuss the problem I have.
    I want to add a preloader for my pages on my website. I don't have any flash animations, I just want a preloader to appear before the page opens so that it can load before the page is shown.
    People in other threads talk about flash and how to make a preloader, thats not what I want to know. I need to know how to put the preloader on my website.
    I learned that I could put a favicon on my webpage by uploading a favicon-picture and then just add a html-code on my pages. Can I do that with the preloader? How does it work?
    /Vincente

    The chicken and the egg.
    Just put the favicon in the root of the webserver.
    Any modern browser will find it without code in a HTML page.
    Or paste this code in the <head> of the published webpage :
    <link rel="shortcut icon" href="../favicon.ico" />
    Or paste this code in a HTML Snippet :
    <script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript">
    <!--
    var head = parent.document.getElementsByTagName("head")[0];
    var favicon = parent.document.createElement("link");
    favicon.rel = ("shortcut icon");
    favicon.href = ("../favicon.ico");
    head.appendChild(favicon);
    // -->
    </script>
    And what should the preloader load before the page opens?

  • Personal Webpage doesn't work

    I just got through with a 3+ hour fight to install PHP on my MBP (Tiger 10.4.9). Now that everything's all up and running (allegedly... PHP eventually installed properly, and I restarted Personal Web Sharing a few times, as well as my computer), nothing will show up. Going to http://10.0.1.200/ produces the default Apache whathaveyou. But when I try to access http://10.0.1.200/~username, I get a 404 error.
    I've put files in both my sites folder and WebServer/Documents, to no avail. Nothing shows up and I keep getting 404s.
    What's this all about?

    Ignore the favicon.ico error message. If you put a favicon.ico file in the folder the image will appear in the URL bar and the error will stop, but it's unimportant.
    <hr>
    Say this in Terminal:
    /private/etc/httpd/users
    Then this:
    sudo nano bean5
    The first line will say:
    <Directory "/Users/bean5/Sites/">
    This is the directory of your websites, you can change it to whatever you want. When you are done, press ctl-o then return to write the file, then ctl-x to quit the editor. Restart Apache to make the new settings take effect.
    <hr>
    You would need to set the PHP default file to "index.php" or whatever you want.
    Open the same file and add this line just under the one you worked on before:
    DirectoryIndex index.php
    Save the file and quit the editor. Restart Apache and bring up your user webpage in a browser. Notice that you do not now even see the "index.html" part. You can set custom default pages for all your webfolders and hide the actual file. Users never need to see them.
    You may actually see text rather than the PHP script executing. If that happens post here.

  • Windows Vista network Icon, next to the little speaker Icon vanished on me.

    No is hasn't been figured out by anyone yet. I've done everything that the experts had to offer. Nothing has worked yet. I've put the operating system in twice. It was there than vanished again. Not worth it a third time. I just can't figure this one out.
    This last time it vanished when I rebuilt the index. I can't open the properties in the local area connection. Untill I discovered the hidden Adminitrator Account. I can open the properties with that account, Not with the other. But no network icon anywhere...!!!
    That little icon has been driving me nuts. One of you out there will find it. It can't hide forever...!!!

    It's not really a DW thing, just put your favicon in the root
    directory of your website and insert a line like <link
    rel="shortcut icon" href="/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />
    in the <head> section of your webpage.
    The pic itself is a 16x16 pixel image saved as favicon.ico. I
    think it's only supposed to be 16 color too...

  • Getting that little icon next to the web address..

    Hey everyone..
    Im using Dreamweaver 8, and I was wondering if there is a
    tool that allows me to insert a small little icon next to an
    internet browsers web address (ex: the little "Y!" to the left of
    the address bar, or better yet, the little macromedia "m" on this
    page, next to the "
    http://...." part. Is there a quick and
    dirty way? What should be the specs on the pic?
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • How can I put favicons on the bookmarks bar?

    I am used to seeing favicons next to my bookmarks--in fact, I have several that have favicons only (such as Google Reader, ESPN). Can this happen with Safari (Windows)? After favicons, seeing all text bookmarks on the bookmarks bar is so 2000s.
    Sorry if this is the wrong category; I didn't see a Windows Safari version forum.

    *How Can I Put Lyrics On The Songs In The iPod Touch?!
    Read the response by Jim VanLeeuwen, but I might add a few comments:
    (a) Lyrics on the Touch are only supported if you have firmware 2.0 or later.
    (b) If you auto-sync your iPod, the changes you make to your library will be copied over to the Touch on your next sync. But if you manually manage the Touch I believe that you will need to delete the revised songs from the Touch and drag the new copies over. Although you can add lyrics directly to the songs that are on the Touch (if you manually manage) it is better to edit your library and replace the updated songs on the Touch. That way in case your Touch ever gets corrupted and you have to delete everything, you won't lose the lyrics (or any other tag changes you made directly on the Touch).

  • Put favicon.ico in SDN's Webserver root

    Please can you post how to do this (place a favicon into the server root) for EP6.0 SPS14, we are currently looking how to do this.

    Adding it to a particular directory is not enough. It has to be added to the html code of the pages. Following tag needs to be added in the <head> section of pages
    <link rel="shortcut icon" href="http://sdn.sap.com/favicon.ico" />
    So essentially you will have to modify the page layout or something similar. Will try to provide a more detailed answered sometime this week.

  • How do I add a favicon to my website through iWeb?

    Hello,
    I built my website through iWeb.  I am wondering if it is possible to add my favicon to my website through iWeb.
    Thanks,
    Lora

    You can use any image as a favicon.
    Save an image as .pgn, .jpg or .gif and rename it favicon.ico
    Put it in the root of the server.
    Any modern browser will find it. No need to add code to a page.
    Here are some I use :

  • How do i open Webpageicons.db? I'm trying to delete my favicons and can't!

    How do i open Webpageicons.db? I'm trying to delete my favicons. Way back some time ago I think instead of deleting the items inside the favicons file I sent the whole folder to the trash. So now I don't have a file folder, its a document page that Adobe Reader states it can't open. A pop up window reads: Adobe Reader could not open 'WebpageIcons.db' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded). First of all I don't know what db is. Is it a document? Is there anyway to change  "db" into something that can be opened. I have 10.7mb in Webpageicons.db that need to be deleted. My Imac is loading pages very slowly and I think starting by emptying the favicons it may help. I have a iMac 3.2 Ghz intel Core i3 with 4 gb of memory. It's running OS X 10.6.8. Any help with solving this issue would be very appreciated. Thank you

    Try putting the file in the trash, but don't empty the trash. Restart your browser and see if web pages load any better. The file is a database file, which may have become corrupt.
