Putting new MacBook into Target Mode

Is it possible to put a fairly new MacBook with a Thunderbolt Port into Target Mode?  I want to connect my MacPro to a MacBook in Target mode.  I have connected the MacBook via it's Thunderbolt port to my MacPro Firewire 800 port using the correct cable.  For some reason I cannot get the MacPro into Target Mode.. Any Assistance would be appreciated.

  • I put my macbook into target disk mode and now it won't start up in regular mode

    I put my macbook into target disk mode and now it won't start up in OSX. I have used my install disk and repaired the drive. I have held down the option key to choose the system. I have tried to start in safe mode with same result. The apple screen appears, but the gear just keeps turning. I can get it back into target disk mode by connecting it by firewaire to my macbook pro. It will start up in Windows when I choose that system. What can I do to get it to start up with OSX?
    Thanks for your help.

    Try this from MacFixIt as well:
    In the case of drive directory damage or problems with permissions, the solution is usually to use Apple's Disk Utility to repair the disk. Of course, you won't be able to perform this operation normally (simply launching the Disk Utility application, located in Applications/Utilities, and initiating a disk repair) if your system will not startup. So two options exist:
    * Insert your Mac OS X 10.4.x (Tiger) media (DVD or CD) and restart the computer while holding down the "C" key. Once the computer has booted from the installation disc, select "Utilities" from the menubar and open Disk Utility. Repair the disk, then quit Disk Utility and restart your system.
    * Alternatively, you can repair the disk while booted in single user mode if you do not have access to a retail Mac OS X 10.4.x (Tiger) DVD/CD. To startup in single user mode, hold down the "Command" and "S" keys simultaneously at startup. Once properly booted, type the command fsck at the prompt. Repeat these process until no errors appear.

  • My 12" powerbook logics card crashed. I have a 17". How do i retrieve my internet bookmarks from the 12" by putting it into Target mode on the 12" and looking into the hard drive on the 12"?

    My 12" powerbook logics card crashed. I have a 17". How do I retrieve my internet bookmarks from the 12" by putting it into Target mode on the 12" and looking into the hard drive on the 12"? Where on the 12" hard drive do I go to search for them?

    If the 12's logic board is trashed, I don't think you can get into FireWire Target Disk Mode. The computer has to start to get to FWTDM. Will it starte and run at all?
    If it won;t start, you will have to go inside and extract the hard drive. Then get this gadget:
    Newer Technology Universal Drive Adapter USB 3.0/2.0 - connects any 2.5", 3.5" or 5.25" drive
    It allows you to connect a bare drive to another computer that has USB. It will act just like an external disk drive. Assuming the 12's drive is not damaged due to the LB failure, you can retrieve files quickly.

  • IMac G4 won't boot, go into target mode, or verbose, or single-user.

    Hi, I am completely flummoxed.
    Yesterday I had my iMac G4 networked (via FireWire cable) to my MacBook Pro. I was copying about 14 GB of data from the MBP to the G4. The MBP indicated the copy operation was finished, but the G4 went into a spinning beachball, from which I could not escape -- couldn't force-quit, change applications, open terminal, or anything. So I (reluctantly) did a hard power-down.
    When I went to restart the G4, I got a grey screen of death -- for about 2 minutes. Then the screen goes black for a second, then goes grey again, this time with the alternating folder-and-question-mark icon. Bad news.
    Here is what I have tried so far:
    * Won't boot into target mode -- if I hold down T at startup, the screen stays black (never gets to the grey screen, or to the FireWire icon).
    * Won't boot into single-user or verbose mode -- if I hold down cmd-S or cmd-V, computer stays grey.
    * Won't boot in safe mode -- ditto.
    So my next idea was to try booting from a startup disk. But how to open the optical drive tray? (This is a tray-loader, not a slot-loader.) I pulled down the white external door manually, but do not see an emergency open pinhole inside. But there must be one, right?
    Does anybody have any other ideas on how I can break into this thing, or what might have gone wrong with it?

    I'm not at a G4 iMac right now, but other tray-load drives of that generation had a hole but ti's very low in the opening. Probably need a good light to see it.
    Try starting the computer and holding the mouse button down while it's trying to boot. This is a startup shortcut to open the drive but may require that the system start to load, something with which yours is obviously struggling.
    Does the iMac have the original Apple keyboard? Some third-party keyboards may not support the startup combos for safe mode, single-user, etc.

  • Installing system on new HD through target mode

    I replaced the HD on my G3 iMac(500MHz) and installed OS 9.2 through target disk mode using my G5 iMac. The new HD (80g) and the system show up in
    the profiler but the G3 can't find the system folder on start-up. I get the blinking folder with ?. I had to use target disk mode because the CD drive in the G3 isn't working. I bought an external firewire CD/DVD but it needs OS 10.3. I plan to upgrade to Tiger but used my original OS9 install disks to get it running. After looking for info on the forums I'm confused about which computer is actually the target and which is the host. I put the G5 in target mode but it seems that it's possible to do it either way. Starting up the G3 with the option key shows no drive available, just the arrows. Any suggestions?

    Hi Neil,
    I am having a very similar issue it sounds like..
    May I explain it to you - I'm hopeful that you can steer me in the right direction.
    Here's what I'm dealing with.
    I have an old iMac G3 (Tangerine)
    http://www.theapplecollection.com/postcards/iMac04n.html
    It's been upgraded, has a fire-wire port now, it's a bit faster, more memory.. still nothing fancy - but it's been running OS 10.3.9 just fine.
    Until my son accidentally deleted some files somewhere - that all but made it unusable.
    Now - it does not have a DVD-Rom drive - so reinstalling won't work. It also doesn't read 'burned' disks -- so burning a copy of the 10.3.9 OS is out as well.
    I have tried the following:
    -connecting as a Target Disk - to install the software from my MacBook.
    -trying to reinstall the classic OS 9 (original) OS, both restart holding down C and otherwise in hopes that it would restore some basic operating function to the thing..
    Neither of them have worked.
    I'm dubious about an external DVD-Rom drive as well - because it will most surely have a Driver of some sort that will have to be installed, and i know that won't work...
    I'm at a loss.
    I haven't heard a single piece of advice that has proven helpful yet ... I wonder if you might be able to help me?
    Thanks in advance for anything you can do to help.
    Russ

  • I put my iPad into DFU mode without thinking much about it. I didn't realize I would lose everything. Is there a way to get everything back the way I used to have it before I tried recovering my iPad?

    A couple of days ago my iPad died, so I plugged it in to charge. It went into a rebooting loop, and when I looked up how to fix this, I saw that I can put my iPad into DFU mode to fix certain things like this. I did, not thinking much about it because l had seen both of my parents get new phones and everything was slowly but surely on their phone the way it was on their old phones.
    I thought that even though I agreed to the iPad being put back into factory settings, I thought I would be able to get everything back the way it used to be just by logging into iCloud when setting it up. I was wrong. This is a school iPad, so all of my notes are gone. The only things that were backed up were my photos. All the games, social media, etc. that I had downloaded prior were gone. Even my notes.
    Is there a way I can get everything back to the way it used to be, or was agreeing to put the iPad back into factory settings the wrong thing to do? Was it a mistake to take it upon myself to fix my iPad in this restarting loop? I would really like to get everything back, especially my school notes.

    The only way to get everything back is by restoring a backup. If you didn't have a backup, there is nothing that you can do to recover your lost documents and your notes. If you have a backup restore the backup in order to recover your data. Purchased apps can always be downloaded again as long as you use the same Apple ID that you bought them with, but data can only be recovered from a backup or if you have copies of the documents and notes on a computer.

    My son let one of his friends use his ipad. The next time he tired to use it he could not get it unlocked, I tired to unlock it but it kept telling me that I had the wrong pass code. With out me knowing my son continued to tire until it completely disabled it self.

    You may have to do this several times.
    Saw this solution on another post about an iPad in a school environment. Might work on your iPad so you won't lose everything.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    ‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
    Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
    I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
    Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
    1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
    2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
    3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
    4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
    5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
    6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
    7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
    8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just canceling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
    If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Try it and good luck. You have nothing more to lose if it doesn't work for you.
     Cheers, Tom

  • Can't get my AGP G4 into Target Mode

    I have a new Intel MacMini I want to use for my home computer, so I tried get my old G4 to startup in Target mode (using lower case "t" at startup) to make file backup and account setup easier.
    The G4 will not go into Target mode - I've tried both restarting and powerig-up, both with "t" pressed down from the beginning. Their are the usual power-up sounds, but the monitor screen remains blank - it doesn't progress to the floating-Y Firewire icon or the normal login screen.
    I read somewhere about Open Firmware Password, but I don't seem to have that on this machine.
    Some info about my G4 - is it a model that supports Target Mode?
    Machine Name: Power Mac G4 (AGP graphics)
    Machine Model: PowerMac3,1
    CPU Type: PowerPC G4 (2.8)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 450 MHz
    L2 Cache (per CPU): 1 MB
    Memory: 1.25 GB
    Bus Speed: 100 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.2.8f1
    OS: 10.4.11
    Two user accounts, both with admin privileges.
    It was so great to set up my wife's Intel iMac with her account files from her old PowerPC via Target Mode. I'd love to be able to do the same with my own old PowerPC G4. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    SInce my need is to transfer my accounts from the old G4 to the new Mac Mini, I will drop the hunt for getting Target Mode working on the G4 and use Migration Assistant via Ethernet:

    Possibly you have to activate this option before using.

    My Iphone 3gs power button not working, so is there any way I can put my iphone into DFU mode..

    No - you can't put the phone in recovery mode or DFU mode without a functioning sleep/wake (power) button.
    Note that DFU mode is only useful when hacking the phone.  Recovery mode is what you want for troubleshooting.

    This was a TOTAL mistake. I had no idea what I was doing. I put my iPad into DFU mode, and now have to restore it. (That didnt end well, knowing I had just bought a bunch of books and apps) I want to know, after I restore my iPad can I go into the app store or iBooks and redownload the books and apps I had originaly payed for? Thanks for the help

    Yes, App Store and iBooks have a "Purchased" tab, allowing you to re-download at no additional charge.
    But that may not be necessary if you restore from a backup. You might be able to get all of your content back from the restore.
