Putting Text on the spine

Hello,
I am preparing a cover using Indesign (it will be a single sheet covering a 2 page spread) and want to know where I should put the text that will go on the spine. I already estimated the width of the spine, but I am not sure where I should put the text. Will it be in a text box that overlaps between the two pages of the spread?

>Put the spine text in a text box that fits exactly into the gutter.
Make it exactly the same width. Since it should be rotated 90° clockwise, and the frame 'remembers' this rotation, this is actually the height.
Select Text Frame options, and set the vertical alignment to Center. Default for the top offset is Ascent; leave it, or change it to either Top of Capitals if you have lots of caps and little or no lowercase, or maybe set it to X height. Check whatever looks best.
I've found the occasional client wondering about the direction the text should be in. You should be able to read it while the book is lying flat on its back.
[... do Arabic and Hebrew books follow this same rule? Now I won't be able to sleep t'night.]

  • How does one put text on the spine?

I'm a little confused about the difference between the version I'm creating and the template I start with. I start with a template, then resize and mess with the arrangement of the pictures. I move text boxes. All seems okay.
I put a colored background on the front and back cover (by inserting a specially made pdf from Pages, a gradient color). The back spine remains white, and blank. How can I add text to the spine? And is there a way to have the color from the background bleed over the spine?
    Ben

I certainly don't know how it was constructed, but I suppose the form was intended for people that use Word. If you were using Word, you would just select the "insert" key (or something - I forget) and type away. The text would type above the line. I thought maybe there was something like that in Pages. I find myself getting very frustrated using Pages and Numbers. They really aren't that easy to use. Word and Excel have them beat.

  • Does anyone know how to simply edit the text in the spine of hard cover, 40 page book in the book mo

Does anyone know how to simply edit the text in the spine of hard cover, 40 page book in the book module? I can click into any other text window and edit and change attributes but I am locked out of editing text when it comes to the spine of the book. I spoke to Blurb support and they referred me to Adobe. I spent 45 minutes with support here - no one knew. I am still waiting for a call back with an answer... not holding my breath as it's been a few hours now. HELP!!!

Thanks for your reply John. I have experienced all the fiddly aspects you mentioned - these are attributes and although changing them requires the skill of a surgeon's hand - it's the actual editing of the text I can't seem to access anymore. The box just won't allow me to do anything except change attributes. Does that make sense? And it's only on the spine where I am having this issue. Puzzled! I have even rebooted the program and just now the computer - to no avail.

  • Putting text in the soldermask

    Hi,
Is there a way to put text in the solder mask layer?
When I try to do so (select solder mask top or bottom/place/graphic/text), the text button is grayed out.
    I'm using Ultiboard V10.01
I'd like not to add an extra silkscreen, for the few letters that nee to be placed in a new layout....
this way, the board will be a little cheaper...
    Thanks

For putting text in the Soldermask Layer use DXF import

  • I have never used indesign to type in text on the spine of a book for submission as a book cover with the POD company Lightning Source. I would be so grateful if someone could tell me how to do this. This is the first time I have ever used a forum.

Help! How do I type in text on the spine of a book cover template in indesign?

    1. Determine the spine width first. Note that the spine width is relative to the thickness of the paper used for printing. For example, your book is of 300 pages, the spine thickness varies relative to paper thickness (say, 60gsm paper or 70gsm paper, or thicker art paper varieties). Get in touch with the Printer to give you a bound dummy (blank pages) with as many number of pages as your book has. Measure the spine manually from it. When you are more experienced, you would be able to calculate the thickness just by knowing the paper thickness (multiply by number of pages of the book).
    2. Create a spread to represent the back cover (left) and front cover (right). Increase the width of either the left page or right page, to make it exactly the width of book + spine width. Use guides to separate the spine from the cover design area. Type the spine matter and rotate the frames to fit to the spine. Rotation of frames should be in such a way that when the book is kept on table with its front cover on top, the spine text matters should be erect (not be upside down). On completion the whole design should have the bleed area on all four sides, left page as back cover, spine in the middle with rotated text frames, right page as front cover.
    OR
    3. You can also make the spine a separate page. Create a page exactly of the width of spine. Go to Pages panel fly-out and uncheck "allow document pages to shuffle". Arrange the three pages, the back cover the spine and the front cover in that order side by side in the pages panel (you can drag-drop the pages to make the 3 pages spread). Go to layout to make finishing touches.

  • I am unable to input text in the spine of a book

I am making a small square book in the book module. The book only has 40 pages and therefore the spine is pretty narrow. In the cover template, the spine does show up but I am unable to click into it, where normally on other books, a yellow box appears to input the text.
I wonder if this is not happening because the spine may be too small for text. Although I did make the text in Photoshop and added it to the cover as a Background graphic. The two issues with that is that it takes much too long to tweak it, and since it's JPEG file, I am sure it won't be as sharp as text typed into LR directly. I will be making several books this size and I would prefer having it be simple and just within LightRoom
    Any insights would be appreciated.
    thank you.

A little bit about binding follows which I hope is helpful. The hardcover spine will be much wider (6mm+) than the soft back. The case in case binding has inherent capacity and width because the underlying construction is actually in three parts front, back and spine with separate boards underneath the case cover carrying your image.  So the hard cover spine width starts at a minimum sufficient for text and (I guess) will only increase with a large number of pages or may be limited by the software.
A softcover spine could be as little as 2-3mm. When/if the page extent increases the spine width can be increased intelligently as part of the binding process by adding the thickness of the growing number of sheets but the centre line may move. Unfortunately the way this is 'accounted' for in overall cover length might (but should not) vary from binder to binder or workflow.  The increase is not based on the centre line it is from spine edge on the front - since the front image is the critical one visually. This is evident in the full image cover template.
This might prove to be a problem for your workaround because as a spine width grows the centre of the image ceases to be a reliable datum. To help Blurb delight as many customers as possible and to contract different printers/binders they probably choose to avoid this problem altogether and stop the spine from bieng used. In my - printing and binding aware - view a wise decision, in your view exasperatingly inexplicable.  I hope your workaround gives a satisfactory result both for a thin book and a thick book but take care.  Good Luck

I need to include a Text afetr the first schedule line item and that shouldn't print after next onwards, can anyone help me out.
    Thanks,

    two things
    in this
activate debugger and check whether the field
    &EKET-J_3ASIZE& is eq ' ' or not
only then it will come in to else condition
if its coming into else case check whether &T166P-TXNAM& is getting populated or not
if it doesnt u need to go to item_text
define a variable and move the value of &T166P-TXNAM&
    define &TEXT& = &T166P-TXNAM&
    and then
    in item_schedule
    iNCLUDE <b>&TEXT &</b> OBJECT &T166P-TDOBJECT& ID &T166P-TDID& LANGUAGE &EKKO-SPRAS& PARAGRAPH IX
i think this will resolve the issue.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Sarvan
Go to messages >> communication method , change the field Cover Page Text with ur po number and send. This is a manual process which you will have to do it for each po.
Now if you want to automate this then you can ask ur abaper to write a small program which will copy the po number to this field.

  • Re Designing a book cover  how do I position the text on the spine?

Typing text on spine. I have used vertical text but I want it to read from left to right when turned on side (like a real book) Help

I was wondering about that! My personal preference would be for the
lettering to run vertically- that way, I wouldn't get a sore neck tilting

Yes, it will do no harm, but it is meant for trouble shooting and you should not have to use it all the time.

  • I use Go Daddy Web Mail and FireFox may be preventing me from being able to put text into the subject line when composing an email.

As the question / statement says, When in Firefox, once I've started my webmail application through Go Daddy, I can compose an entire email filling out all the required info. But, when I put the mouse over the 'Subject Line' and click, no cursor appears.
Having walked through this with Go Daddy, they are convinced that it's FireFox because we opened up their webmail with 2 other browsers and both allowed me to plug in a subject line.

  • Trouble with viewing font on spine of Photo book.  I can't find a way to view and edit the text which appears on the spine of the dustcover or the book itself when printed.

I can't find a way to view and edit the text which appears on the spine of the dustcover or the photo book itself.  When I preview the book it appears on the dustcover and the book, but not when I'm back in the creation or editing windows.  I've printed 4 books in a series and two spines are one font size, and two others are a different font size.  One of the books has a shortened title on the book spine.

The text on the spine will be the same text that is in the Title text box on the title page.  You can change the font and style of that text just like you change any text in Aperture. Aperture will size and center the spine text for you
If you want the content or the font and style  of the text to be different from your Title box text then you have to trick the program a bit.  Put the text that you want in the spine into the Title text box and then move that box to a place on the page where it will not be visible when printed ( Y coordinate -1.0 inches for example).  Don't move it too far away or it will be hard to get back to in order to make an edit.    Then make a new text box on the title page and put the text you want on the cover in that.  (Or make a book without text on the cover , but with text on the spine).
You are 100% correct in that you can not preview this unless you preview the printed book
