PVM OL6 kickstart install challenges on Oracle VM 3.1.1.544

Thank you all in advance for your support!
Environment:
Oracle VM 3.1.1.544 patched
4 Dell M610's, 1 with Oracle VM Manager (4 NICS, 2 active, eth3/private and eth0/public), 3 Oracle VM servers (4 NICS, 2 bonds w 802.1q VLANS, 3 private non routable management (management, heartbeat, live migration) VLANs on bond0 and 4 public routable VLANs for VMs on bond1.
The dom0s are on private non routable networks accessible via an interface on the private management network channel on the oracle vm manager host.
The dom0s have no access to public networks.
We have multiple web servers with kickstart files and installation trees on multiple public networks to support OL 5.8 and 6.2 kickstart installs.
Requirement:
Use existing Linux kickstart process (customer has been running RHEL for years), i.e. use existing web servers with kickstart files (with slight modifications for ovm) and install trees for Oracle Linux installs on Oracle VM. Customer is new to OVM.
Challenge:
We create a OL 6.2 VM in Oracle VM Manager and have tried the following settings in the "Boot Order → Network Boot Path":
Please note that the 10.2.x.x addresses are on a public network and the 192.168.x.x address is on a private network. The public networks are accessible by domUs and web servers with ks/install trees, not by dom0s.
Dom0:
/usr/bin/xenpvboot http://192.168.x.x/ks/oel62/ kernel=isolinux ramdisk=isolinux --args="http://192.168.x.x/ks/ol62.ks ip 10.2.x.x netmask 255.255.0.0 gateway 10.2.x.x nameserver 10.2.x.x,10.3.x.x hostname ol62test.ovm.com"
The above command generates a clean response, i.e. no errors.
DomU - Boot Order → Network Boot Path:
--args ks=http://192.168.x.x/ks/ol62.ks http://192.168.x.x/ks/oel62
The result from the above example is that the VM boots and then stops on the network manager screen. We view other ttys and see that eth0 is unable to start.
DomU - Boot Order → Network Boot Path:
--args= http://10.2.x.x/stage/ol62test.ks http://192.168.x.x/ks/oel62/
DomU - Boot Order → Network Boot Path:
http://192.168.x.x/ks/oel62/ --args="http://10.2.x.x/stage/ol62test.ks ip 10.2.x.x netmask 255.255.0.0 gateway 10.2x.x.x nameserver 10.2.x.x,10.4.x.x hostname ol62test.ovm.com"
The results from the above two examples is that the VM boots but the ks file does no invoke. The httpd access logs show the boot process and do not show the ks file being accessed.
Questions:
1. Could you please help confirm the PVM kickstart workflow between the dom0 (private) and domU (public).
1. For example, could you please help confirm the following?:
2. step 1 – start a VM with Boot Order → Network Boot Path: --args ks=http://192.168.x.x/ks/ol62.ks http://192.168.x.x/ks/oel62
3. dom0 accesses the install tree via the server management network channel, i.e. http://192.168.x.x/ks/oel62/ and boots the VM
4. domU gets an IP from either a) –args in “ Boot Order → Network Boot Path” or b) from a kickstart file
5. all good and hit the pub :-)
Thank you again for your support!

2. I can confirm this works with PVM guests. I don't run OL 6 so I can't confirm 6. OL5 is rock solid when it comes to oracle products.
--args ks=http://ipaddress/test/ks.cfg http://ipaddressofhttpserver/distrubutioniso/
4. I always set a static DHCP mapping for the MAC for the VM guest. I never try passing the ip on the boot line. If I were to do it... I would try adding ksdevice=eth0 and then ip params.
The /distrubutioniso/ only gives you the boot files to boot the VM guest. The ks= value serves the kickstart file/script which then details the mount point for the distribution to load.
You should list /distubutioniso/ last. Not before the --args. At least that is the way I've always done it.

  • Installing 32 bit oracle on 64 bit windows 7

My oracle application works only with 32 bit oracle. Now I need to install the application on a 64 bit windows 7.I tried installing oracle 11g 32 bit database on this machine(64 bit windows 7).During the final stages,it gave an error that the listener service has not started. When I checked the Services status in Computer Management->Services,I found that the listener has already started.I closed the error message and continued with installation. The installation completed successfully. But when I login to sql plus with my oracle database(SYSTEM/SYSTEM@MYHOSTNAME),it is giving tns error ORA 12541-TNS NO LISTENER.I tried every possible ways like restarting the service, and deleting the listener and creating it again, but still it doesnt work.
If anyone has faced the same problem, please give me solution.
I cannot try installing 64 bit oracle because my application is not compatible with 64 bit oracle.

Edited by: 1001322 on Apr 20, 2013 7:23 AMIn addition to the other comments, you need to make the distinction between the oracle database and the oracle client.
the application interacts directly with the oracle client software. The application should not know or care about the word length of the database.

  • Is it possible to install 32 bit oracle db on a 64 bit linux server?

Is it possible to install 32 bit oracle 10g db on a 64 bit linux server rhel 4.
    thanks in advance,
    chau

Yes, it is possible, but you can perfectly install the 64 bits version on RHEL4. However you will have more trouble on unsupported OS... so it's useful that you can install the 32 bits version.

  • Install 16 bit Oracle client on Win 2003 server

    Hello,
Is it possible to install Oracle SQL* Net 2.3(16 bit) Client on Windows 2003 server. If it is then could someone give me links from where I could get more information on this (like the steps to install 16 bit Oracle client on Win 2003).
    Thanks.

the 16-bit applications are not supported by Windows 2003 server x64 edition.
    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=896458&SD=tech
I have never tried to use 16-bit SQLNet client on Windows 2003 x86. I'm pretty sure that this combination will not be supported by Oracle , athough it could work.
As far as I remember the 2.3 client was shipped with the Oracle 7.3.
here is the desupport notice for Oracle 7

    Hi,
I just had this messages yesterday during my install.
You have to update those 2 files:
    <RCU Home>\rcu\integration\ipm\sql\createtables_ipm_sqlserver.sql
    <RCU Home>\rcu\integration\ipm\sql\createuser_ipm_sqlserver.sql
The first 2 lines begin with "Rem ..." which is not correct for SQL Server : I added "--" and it worked.

  • How to install Oracle9iAS and Oracle Portal

Can anyone help me to install Oracle9iAS and Oracle Portal?
In which order must they be installed?
Are there important things to do before the isntalling?
Or does anyone know where to find clear documentation for the installation?
    thanks

Portal is installed as part of the 9iAS install.
You can find the Installation Guide online at http://otn.oracle.com/products/ias/. Choose the Documentation tab. Select your platform (Solaris, NT, etc.), and click HTML or PDF and you'll have the docs you need for installing 9lAS and Portal with default configuration.
For more info on custom configuring portal, go to http://technet.oracle.com/products/iportal/. There is a section on the page called Configure 9iAS Portal that has links to all the available configuration documentation.
    Best,
    Jay

  • How to install and configure oracle secure backup(osb-10.4.0.3.0_linux.x64) in linux

    Hello,
We are planning to install and configure Oracle Secure Backup Version 10.4 in Linux server. I had searched documents and i have not find any relevant steps to install and configure in OEL 6.2.
Can anyone please suggest me how to install and configure OSB.
    Regards,
    Anil

    Hi
Installing OSB on Oracle Linux is just the same as installing on any other supported linux and is described in Installation and Configuration guide. Just stick with the directories and procedure described in install guide and you should be fine.
For media server choose a physical host due to performance considerations. I think it is mentioned in docs somewhere.

  • While installing the linux oracle some of the packages were not be installed.. Especially ihe .i686 file

At the time of database installation the given packages are can't be installed..
    libfreebl3.so(NSSRAWHASH_3.12.3) is needed by glibc-2.17-78.0.1.el7.i686,
    libstdc++-devel-4.8.2-3.el7.i686
    libXtst-1.2.2-1.el7.i686
At the installation time the output will be " failed dependencies"

    Hi,
It  is easy to us to help you faster and with best recommendations by putting the Linux Server version and the Oracle database version.
If you have an Oracle Linux 5, you can install the package oracle-validated and If you have Oracle Linux 6, you can install the package oracle-rdbms-server-11gR2-preinstall, So these packages will install ALL Packages dependency that one Oracle database needs.
    Best regards.
