Q about Audio tracks in PProCC

I've created a PProCC project, using AVCHD footage from a Panasonic DSLR. The original audio came in as a stereo track. I converted it to dual mono, because I read somewhere that would be a good idea, I don't remember exactly why!
Anyway,I've got my project put together, but when I go to edit audio in Audition, I notice that there is only 1 channel. And now looking back at the project, I see that both mono tracks are listed as Channel 1. When I edit in Audition, I'm only editing one channel. So what I need to know is, does the editing of that channel in Audition result in changes to both of my mono tracks in the original PProCC project, or just one? Thanks for your help! ~Bond

Well, that was a good and simple idea.
Exported mono track to Audition, added 5 sec silence at the beginning of the track. Saved in Audition.
Went back to PProCC, and sure enough only one track was affected.
I'm all about workflow, but I'm so mew at this I'm not at all surprised that it's an unusual workflow.
There's a lot of noise in these audio tracks - live theater recording, boomy room (which I know I can't do much about) but also several periods of obnoxious industrial noise - refrigeration unit going on next door, and whatever else - and I do think I can do something about that. But I'd like noise reduction to happen on both tracks in Audition, and it appears that I can't do that with the two mono tracks set up the way they are. So it appears that I've spent a ton of time trying to edit noise out of the audio, only to now discover that I've only been affecting one of the tracks, which is why, I guess, the noise isn't going away. Oy!!! Do I have any options for being able to edit both audio tracks simultaneously? Thanks for the help.

  • Two questions about Audio Tracks

I need to make several adjustments to an audio track of an interview to remove the voice of the interviewer who would give the occasional "uh-huh" etc., sometimes overlapping (though usually not) with the interviewee.
The way I've been doing this is to pull down the db level at those points in the timeline.
    My questions:
    1. Is this the best way to do it?
    2. Regardless of the answer to question 1, why is it that sometimes when I use the pen tool in one stereo track, it will automatically affect the other at the same time, and other times I need to do each stereo track separately?
    Thanks a lot.

If you recorded with two mikes, which it sounds like you did, you really recorded two distinct tracks, and you ought to bring them in as dual mono tracks, rather than stereo. (A capture setting.) Go to the Modify pulldown and uncheck "stereo pair." Then you should be able to adjust to your heart's content.
Did you record any room tone? It's very useful to fill in the gaps you create by eliminating words. Nothing detracts from an otherwise compelling show like bad audio! If you don't have any room tone, look for a section where no one is saying anything and there is no clothing rustle, etc, FROM THE TRACK where you are making deletions. Use that to fill the holes.

  • Question about multiple audio tracks

    Hello,
I see that imovie has only 2 audio tracks available when creating a movie. I need more than two since I will be working with a voiceover track, a soundtrack and at least one background/environment track all at one time. I won't be able to use the sound recorded with the video so that "track" is not an option.
My question is; Am I out of luck here and need to spend the 1K for studio pro to add more multiple audio tracks?
Also, I tried working with garageband but since all of my audio tracks import in at a minimum of 40 beats per minute, the voiceovers are all sped up and sound chipmunky.
    Thanks for any help!

Well I didn't mean to irritate you...LOL And yes, I realize that this is the iM 6 forum but the gist of my question was related to multiple audio tracks in iM and thought I would ask about it in the forum pertaining to the latest release.
I had already posted a question in the GB forum regarding the bpm problem and found no answers so I was pretty much about to shelve that idea and forgo the whole garageband thing; this without knowing about the new "swap" features. I just updated to iM 6 yesterday.
As far as the "on-tape" raw audios: I was working on my movie in iM4. I wanted to add more audio bits but I don't have a proper mic for my G5 so I recorded the audio bits on dv8 tape through my camcorder. I imported the video (the image was the inside of my lens cap!), extracted the audio, took those audio files and imported them into GarageBand. That's when I noticed the bpm problem.
I'm sorry about the lack of info I originally gave but like I said, I had pretty much gave up on the idea of using GarageBand. I'm pretty new at this and I'm trying to decide what I need in terms of software to get what I want out of my movie. I'd be willing to pay for FCxp but still looking into whether I need to do just that or whether I can get by by using imovie and now it looks like GarageBand too.
    ah, thanks for that
    what irritates me, Prince wrote:

... ehm, but this is the iM 6(six) section, as said,
iM 6 allows now "swapping" files with GB3... (I'm way
back in the 90ies.... see my specs... )
so, video is in some iM, and he wants to use the
    actual "on-tape" raw audios...
I thnik we need a little more detail...

    Hello All...
Back after a brief absence, things look a little bit different.
I'm trying to take a 16 minute mini dv video and compress it for use on the web. I'm interested in any suggestions you may have on settings for the video and audio tracks. I've tried using Sorenson 3 (15 frames, key frames set to automatic, 320 x 240) for video and IMA 4:1 (mono) for audio. The resulting video looked great but the file size came in at about 255 Mb.
    Thanks!

Thank you for the replies.  Everyone was correct about the jack, interface, and phasing problems.  I have been unplugging my motu audio interface and then using headphones at work.  I have not changed any detailed audio output settings in logic.  When I read that the jack might be a problem I tried switching headphones.  This actually helped.  I am using dre-beats headphones and they seem to be having issues with the mac/jack-(the phasing/panning problems.  I can use these headphones with other devices but not the mac.  I have to use ipod ear buds and the phasing seems fixed.  Hopefully this information is helpful to someone else.
If anyone knows how to correct this issue please let me know its difficult to know what my final mixes are going to sound like and I have had to keep bouncing everything into i-tunes- sync to ipod and then listen in my car radio.

  • Unable to perform multi audio tracks mixing with Audio Mixer

How do you get a simple multi track mix with the Premier Pro 1.5 Audio Mixer?
I got 2 audio clips, each sitting at the start of its own separate track (Audio 1 and Audio 2). I just want to mix them into the Master track.  Simple enough.
So I go to the Audio Mixer. Position the CTI at the start of the tracks and hit the red RECORD button. The red spot starts blinking. Then I hit the START/STOP button expecting the tracks to start mixing into the Master track. Instead, I get this error message
"PLAYER ERROR: You cannot record without enabling at least one track for recording."
I get the same problem if I try the mix onto a submix track.
What am I missing? I combed through the Premiere Pro User Guide and J. Rosenberg's Premiere Pro Studio Techniques but to no avail.
    Thanks for any help.
    JB.

Jacques, I havn't seen 1.5 for a while, so I need to stress that what I'm about to say is more of an educated guess linked to a rough memory.
Each audio track in the mixer has a small chip (tickbox in 1.5??) that you click in order to enable that track for recording. In CS3 it's a little microphone.
Having said that, I DON'T think that's going to give you what you want, as the intention of the recording functionality in PP is to record audio FROM AN EXTERNAL SOURCE (like a microphone) straight to an audio track, say, when doing a Voice Over for some video.
You can't "mix down" to the master, as the master is not a track per se. It's just a "final" level control. The master will always be the sum of the active tracks, and THAT'S what will be rendered in the final output.
You can still "live mix" your audio with the faders, it's just that those movements get recorded as keyframes on each of the tracks you modify (including, BTW, the Master).
The advantage to this workflow is that every fader move you make is infinitley editable... a small error when riding the faders can easily be fixed by dragging keyframes.

  • Audio tracks suddenly missing from capture... need help!

Hi! I have been capturing video (with audio) successfully and routinely for months now. Suddenly, though, when I capture video... from the same device, with the same preset... the clips have only 1 Video track, and no Audio tracks. My camera is still recording audio (and I still hear it during the capture), but the audio tracks just aren't there in the resultant clip. It seems to me like FCE has just decided not to capture audio, as if to say "pffft... we don't need that." But why this happened is beyond me!
Even within this same project, I have other clips captured with audio just fine. I didn't even realize it was an option NOT to capture audio. There aren't any settings to that effect in the Capture window... i.e. there's nothing to turn OFF, so I don't know how to turn it back ON! HELP! How do I get audio back on my captured clips? Is there a way to toggle this? How can I possibly be getting video without audio when the preset has already been working for this device?
Things seemed to change once I started using the Voice Over tool. After that, none of my captured clips have audio. Something I did on or around that time changed FCE internally. I combed through the manual but didn't see any leads. They assume if you have the right preset, it'll just work. No mention of disabling audio.
Please help, because I'm just about ready to throw my Mac throw the wall. I even tried reinstalling FCE, just to get it back to the previous state, but it didn't help.
P.S. I also haven't changed anything on my camera that would affect audio. I feel this is just a setting somewhere in FCE that I can't find and don't even know where to look for it...
    Thanks in advance!!

Hi. Where should I look for them? I haven't had much success finding things on my own, so please spell it out for me.
I just find this so odd... it would be one thing for the tracks to be silent or garbled, then I would think this was a cable issue or the camera. But I can't even imagine why the audio tracks would just not be there. If I saw a preference for "Video Only Capture" somewhere, it would make sense.
Anyway, thanks. Please tell me where there's a prefs file, and I'll roast it.

  • How can I make a synced audio track match the length of selected clips in a multicam seq?

I have a continuous multicam sequence of about 13 minutes containing a synced master audio track recorded from seperate microphones. I want to rearrange scenes from it into my final sequence, but when I select a range of clips to nest the entire length of audio gets pasted into the new sequence. I want to trim the audio to match just the clips I've selected but not lose sync. Is there a way to do this or is nesting not the way to chop up a sequence and rearrange the scenes in it?
    Thanks.
    Mike

Me too!!!  I have a multicam sequence from 2 cameras with the audio staying on camera 1. I also have a seperate, continuous  audio track recorded from microphones which I have synced to the timeline. I'm trying to select a group of sequential clips of different camera angles from the timeline to create scenes which I can insert into a final sequence but in a different order from how they are on the timeline. Let's say I want to take a series of clips that start at 3:30 on the timeline and go until 4:30 on the timeline.  It will contain several cuts between the different cameras and I want to use that section as the first scene of my new sequence. If I select all of the clips in that time period and nest them into a new sequence, I only get the audio from camera 1 on the new TL. If I try window selecting those clips to include the continuous audio track, I get a new TL with 3 minutes and 30 seconds of the desired audio, then the video clips, and then the rest of the audio making a 13 minute TL. I just learned, after searching around, about marking in and out points on my multicam seq. and using the trick of "LIFTing" and then "UNDOing" to keep my  multiseq intact, and then pasting into a new sequence. That works, but I'm only getting the audio track from off the camera. It won't select and lift the section of the other audio track that I want. I'm rushed for time so that's the way I've ended up finishing the video for now. The camera audio is just going to have to do although the mic recording is much better. The more I try to explain this the more confused I get and I'm sure everybody reading it does too. Any ideas?   Thanks!

  • Creating audio tracks in logic 8.

    Hi,
Having used logic 8 for about half a year now I have had no problems whatsoever.
However, about a week ago, when creating new audio tracks this happens.
I create 2 tracks for example
Audio track 1 works as normal and below the level meter at the bottom left I see the symbol to change from mono to stereo. I select it as mono.
Audio track 2 looks normal at first but has no symbol at the bottom of the meter to select mono/stereo...
I cannot do anything with this track. If I selected Audio track 1 as stereo. Audio track 2 comes up with the message:
    Audio 2
Controlled by stereo object "Audio 1-2"
I want it to go back to normal so I can record on every track! What is going on?!
There is probably quite a simple fix for this... I just can't seem to work it out.
    Many thanks,

    How? This should work:
Of course you need the command New... from the Local arrange menu Tracks. It sounds like you've used *New with Duplicate Setting* instead.
However, you can reassign tracks by ctrl-clicking on the track header:
Audio track 1 works as normal and below the level meter at the bottom left I see the symbol to change from mono to stereo. I select it as mono.
Audio track 2 looks normal at first but has no symbol at the bottom of the meter to select mono/stereo...

You have two channel strips assigned to one track... reassign it, or just delete the 'slave' and create a fresh one. Again, it looks like you (or Logic) have used the *New with Duplicate Setting* command somehow.

  • [Pre Ele 9] Audio tracks in project are frozen. Unable to move, edit, or even select.

    Hello,
This is my first project using Premiere. Great program, when you know what you're doing. Right now, I'm on a modest laptop, Vista 32-bit, 2 gigs of RAM, Dual CPU @ 2.00 ghz. My project consists of .wma files, some .mp3's, .wav's, and some .jpgs. It's a small project, only ten minutes, about 20 clips, some 20 cuts.
I don't know exactly what happened. I was trying to move all my audio files I had to close this gap I made. But I think I clicked group, or link or something by mistake, and now, two of my audio tracks are literally unresponsive. They play perfectly for the preview, but I can't move them. I can't even select them. Right clicking the sound track does nothing. Even weirder is that my Audio 1 track is normal. It's just my narration and soundtrack tracks that are causing problems. I've researched online, and I heard about them being "locked" or "disabled", or something with Keyframes. But I don't think that's it. Or maybe I need more of a noob's guide. I turned on track size and saw the waveform for my audio. It's there, but it's dimmer than my Audio 1 waveform. Also, I tried Render and Replace, but that didn't work. Lastly, whenever I try adding a new audio file in any of the two audio  tracks, the program basically ignores it and places it in Audio 1 or  even creates a new audio track.
I know I did something so simple, I know I just need to uncheck this tiny little option. Maybe some of you are even chuckling. But please, help me. End this torment.
If you need more information, let me know.
    Thank you for your consideration.

I agree with Neale on this one. The Narration and Soundtrack are "fixed" Audio Tracks, and have at least one property, that other Audio Tracks do not have - they cannot be Deleted. Usually, they work just fine, as their names indicate, but then sometimes, they just refuse to work properly. Why? I have never seen a common element, when they just sort of freeze up, or refuse to mix-down their Clips.
Because this behavior has struck several, most of us just recommend NOT using either, and instead, just using an empty regular Audio Track. I cannot recall an instance, when that proceeure did not work. This behavior has been around since about PrE4.0, by my readings, but may have happened to even earlier versions. There is just something in the structure of those two Audio Tracks, that gets "out of alignment," either with certain operations, or perhaps certain Assets.
On the note of "certain Assets," do you happen to have any MP3's on either of those Tracks? They can cause no end to problems, and not just on those two fixed Audio Tracks. If you do have MP3's, take a look at this ARTICLE.
    Good luck,

  • Questions on sending audio tracks from a short film into Audition for mastering

Ok so basically I have a 4 minute film in which i need to master the audio. I have a few quesions as to how to best go about this.
1: Some of the clips came with 2 tracks off the camera yet they are both labeled channel 1 on the beginning of the clip on the timeline. Their properties are listed as follows:
    Type: Windows WAVE audio file
    File Size: 16.0 MB
Source Audio Format: 48000 Hz - 24 bit - Stereo
Project Audio Format: 48000 Hz - 32 bit floating point - Stereo
    Total Duration: 00:00:58:09344
    Why are there 2 tracks?
2: Some other audio tracks are just labeled on the timeline as L and R. Both these and the other ones labeled Ch 1 are synced with Pluraleyes from an H4N Zoom recorder so i have no clue why they are labeled different. These one have properties labeled as such:
    Type: MPEG Movie
    File Size: 69.5 MB
    Image Size: 1920 x 1080
    Frame Rate: 23.976
Source Audio Format: 48000 Hz - 16 bit - Stereo
Project Audio Format: 48000 Hz - 32 bit floating point - Stereo
    Total Duration: 00:00:14:20
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.0 (1.0)
Yes those are audio files on the timeline.
3: What is the general scoops with these multi track audio files? Do I need both tracks?
4: What would be the best workflow to export all the audio clips into Audition and get them back in the timeline? I heard about importing then in Premiere clicking Undo so you don't have the audio track clips as "Audio Extracted" and you retain the originals, but then just replace them with the Audition audio.
Working with sound is not yet a strong point of mine, i am just a video editor but need to get a grasp on properly handling this.

Cameras although they can record stereo audio often only use a small mono gun mic mounted on the camera. The audio menus on the camera give you the option to record either the mono mic to both tracks (ie. Ch1 input to the camrea is fed to both) or as stereo tracks from a stereo mic or as split tracks with onboard mic via Ch1 to track 1 and, say, a radio mic fed via Ch2 to track 2.
Your first files sound as if they came from the first of those options from an onboard mono mic. You don't necessarily need both trakc as they are identical mono tracks in this case.
The second set of tracks were recorded as a stereo pair on the Zoom, hence L and R. They could be stereo or more likely again are double mono tracks where you will only need one of them.
However, depending on the project, it may be more convenient to keep both tracks if any stereo music or effects are going to be mixed in on the multitrack. The final edited video will probably have two tracks on it anyway even if all the audio content is mono.

  • How can I use ALL audio tracks in multiclip editing?

I want to be able to use all audio tracks after the multiclip cut.
It's only a two camera shoot, but I want to be able to use the ambient room sound from the second camera ... and control its level (in relation to the master audio track on the first camera) AFTER the cuts are made.
Is this possible in multiclip editing? And how does one go about it?
Apologies. I've spent an hour or so in the manual, and it isn't clear ... or I'm just not finding the right reference.
    All ears,
    Ben

Sorry if I'm steering you down a path you don't want to go or even if there's a better way but I wouldn't be ding complex audio mixing anywhere near the multiclip interface. Export your reference movie or nest the multiclip project into another sequence, bring in your additional tracks, get to work. Just my preferences, I put a bunch of rough keyframes in the audio tracks and enter some markers (and make a lot of paper notes). Then I go back using the large mixer window to do the fine tweaking.
Stick around for a couple of days, some other multiclip users with more experience than I will offer some more useful suggestions.

  • Multiclips and multiple audio tracks playing at the same time

I've only just taken delivery of my first ever mac (only ever used PC) with FCP, and I'm loving it already! Done lots of reading and viewing of video etc etc, and it's not as daunting as I thought it might be. I have one question the books don't seem to answer, and I can only find one reference to this on this site, with no definitive response. FCP5 probably doesn't work this way, but just in case someone knows different......
I film and edit motorsport (karting) programmes for television in the UK, using multiple cameras. I usually lay all the video and audio tracks on the timeline, (synched) lock the audio for each (as it is engine noise, and I want it playing without abrupt changes at cuts as each kart passes each camera, whether in shot or not) then cut the video tracks and delete those video segments not required.
The most exciting aspect of FCP5 for me is the multiclip editing facility, which I have found very easy to learn and is going to save me hours of work! However, I want to know if there is a way of having each audio track from each camera used in the multiclip laid down on the timeline when you import the multiclip to the timeline from the viewer, in order that I can play each audio track from each of the cameras at the same time.
I know how to cut from angle to angle, leaving the audio from the selected angle as the one audio track playing, but I want all of the tracks to appear in the timeline and play at the same time. I know there's a bit of a workaround by locking the video and importing each audio track from each clip independently, but if you do have to re-synch one of the multiclips, this means the audio is not then synched with the original clip, which will have had an in point set before being imported in as part of a multiclip.
I can understand why you might want to keep audio from one camera only playing over the whole multiclip, or to switch between audio from each, but in my case I prefer all audio to play at the same time. The workaround is still do-able for me as I'm only talking about engine notes, which if they are a few frames out is not very noticeable at all, but I would like to know if I'm right in thinking I cannot do it the way I would like to?
Wish I'd used FCP from the start, but glad I've got it now.....especially with the 30 inch screen! It's 4.40am, been going over 19 hours straight and I'm still making comments like...."WOW, that's brilliant"...every half hour!

  • How do I import multiple audio tracks?

    Hi there...
I have a number of video files that have multiple audio tracks in them. The problem is I can not work out how to get prem to see multiple audio tracks. The files import fine and I have also tried various other formates with multi-track audio.. but only audio "stream 1" is visible in prem.
What I was hoping is that the video would come in with a 2 audio tracks instead of 1 each in its own "lane".. so I can then use the mixer and the audio files are  linked to the video file and in perfect sync.. (just like when you import with 1 track)
NOTE: I am not talking about channels.. but complete 2 completely different audio tracks.. and I know that I could extract these audio streams into wavs and then re-sync them but this seams overkill and a duplication of effort... surly there is a way to have prem support more than 1 audio track on a video file?
    --Me

Well, if PP doesn't bring them in, then best guess is they just don't exist.
There's really no trick or user adjustment for this that I'm aware of.  You import the file, PP sees what's in it.  I've never observed or read about any other behavior than that.

  • Is there a way to get an iPod touch to play one audio track and stop.

Is there a way to get an iPad to play one audio track and stop.
I work in education and particularly music. Teachers are looking to create a playlist of selected track but only want the selected track to play then stop.
This allows them to talk to the class during presentation and not worry about having to stop playback mid discussion.
I've been successful doing this from appleTVs homeshared to a library by unchecking songs in the playlist. But It would be useful to instructors who have there own media on their device.

Thanks for a cognative answer TXMark.
For what its worth to any readers that work in education and would like this play once and stop 'feature'
I had great success in homeshareing a iTunes library of teaching material and creating topic specific playlist and used apple remote app to control an appletv connected to that homeshared library. As TXMark suggests, uncheck the songs in iTunes and the media will not automatically play the tracks in sequence.
note: if you have video media that you would like to have in the playlist, be sure its listed as a music video in the options of get info of track. otherwise the apple tv will not see the media in the playlist and will put it in the movies section of the library.
