Q: For professional designers and art directors.

I'm looking to hear experiences and impressions about the latest MPs from professional users. Specifically, I'd love to hear from designers and art directors using the usual tools of the trade:
• Adobe CS3 Design Premium Suite
• Adobe After Effects
• Quark
• Extensis Suitcase Fusion
Will happily accept and consider input from others but iLife apps are not part of my work environment or consideration set.

I'm currently using a Dual 2.5 G5 as my primary machine and a MBP 2.16 Duo as my mobile unit. I'm considering upgrading the G5 to a Mac Pro and am curious to hear about real world performance with respect to the world of design. Anyone willing to help a brother out?
For obvious reason I'd like an Intel processor so as I can take advantage of CS3 in all its glory. Sure, it runs fine on my G5 but I'm looking for the speed bump. In addition, I would like to add drives for storage and intend to run multiple OSs -- Windoze (spare the ridicule, I have my reasons) as well as a Linux flavor. I'm guessing I'll go ahead and throw five drives in the MP. Anyone else done that yet? Any upsides / downsides to be aware of?
In my current desktop I'm running 6.5GB RAM which is quite nice. In a MP I would imagine I'd install at least that much RAM. How much RAM are other pro users equiping their MPs with?
Apple offers a nice lineup of graphics card options. I'm not the dual monitor type, I prefer one large monitor. Based on that, what card might other users suggest as being my best bet?
To Quad or not to Quad. While the Dual Quad 3.0 processors makes the testeroserone in my body surge, will I notice the bump given the apps I run day to day? Is it worth the jump in price? Will Duos be better for my particular needs? I'm not much of a gamer so that can be eliminated from the mix.
Anything else I should consider as I look into possibly upgrading? I'm not in a hurry and have the luxury of waiting until after WWDC. Needless to say there may / may not be upgrades at that time. I'm not the type to whine if I buy today and they bump processor speeds tomorrow -- that's life.

IPad 2 Capacity for making music and art?

Hey all,
After dilly-dallying for a few months I've finally broken down and decided to purchase an iPad. My only uncertainty is which capacity to get - the 16GB or the 32GB?
The reason I'm not certain is that my partner and I intend to use it for painting and making music. I'm wondering if anyone out here is using it for the same thing and can shed any light on an answer? From looking at app sizes and estimating the size of our pieces from JPEG and MP3 formats, I think a 16GB will suffice, but there doesn't seem to be much information to confirm that.

Time Capsule vs Seagate for professional video and music

Hi there,
I don´t know what to purchase, I want an external hard drive to storage my music and videos as well my photos work, and keep my computer free in space. But if all my documents are in my hard drive, so I wouldn´t backup my documents but only in the hard drive, What a good idea would be to have a seagate? So that I can create a cloud and store my data there, so if the seagate will fail I could recover my documents from the cloud.
I am thinking to purchase a timecapsule 3TB or a Seagate Business Storage 4TB

Backing up over wireless.....no matter which drive you choose.....is going to be 5-10 times slower than backing up using a direct wired connection.
So, in addition to delays, there are 5-10 times more chances of an error occurring over wireless, damaging or corrupting your important data.

Could I download firefox 20 and 21 and use one for personal and one for professional purposes.

I am currently using Firefox for my work at home job but I am also taking online classes and my school recommends Firefox as their supported browser. My Job recommends using a separate browsers for personal needs. My question is could I download lets say Firefox 22 and use that for professional purpose and download Firefox 21 and use that for completing my school work.

You can only open the Profile Manager if all Firefox instances are closed.
You can install multiple Firefox versions via a custom install in different installation folders and only use the older Firefox version when you really need it. 
Do a custom install and install each version in its own program folder to use multiple Firefox versions.

Academy of Art Cancels CS6 for all current and PAST students. I don't want the cloud. I've been robbed!

Adobe and the Academy of Art University are in the process of canceling thousands of registered copies of the Adobe Master Collection - v. CS6 without warning, notice, or legal grounds. Be warned.
It's a direct violation of the licensing agreement, and both parties are blaming each other for the theft. I know they are canceling the serial numbers in batches, and I think it is an attempt to dampen the public perception. I am also pretty convinced they are doing it at other universities. I am going to organize a class-action lawsuit. This is theft, and coercion, of the highest order. The think they can force us to use Cloud, and pay them for eternity for the privilege, by stealing our property directly off our laptops.
Adobe is attacking their precious newbies, students, and recent graduates. They are harming the very people who would have supported them in future years, and they should be held accountable.

Before the big announcement about our licenses, which is supposedly happening today, I wanted to do a recap of facts that we have gathered over the last three weeks so we can easily review our position as a group.
1.) Between May 2012 and August 2014, the Academy of Art University granted students permanent licenses, for CS6 Master Collection. We have documented proof that we were told, in writing, that these licenses would never expire and all forms of professional and student work were permitted. In fact, we have several sources for this claim, and it is not in dispute.
2.) We were given stand-alone, non-subscription based software, which appears to be the last possible independent version of Adobe’s software suite.
3.) License cancellation began in June 2014, occurring in waves, with the largest set of cancellations (and presumed final batch) occurring around August 3rd, 2014. There was no warning, and no one was prepared to endure the changes or impending costs associated with the theft. Many, in desperation to keep their jobs, were forced to pay the ransom and join Creative Cloud against their personal will.
4.) Adobe blames AAU for the cancellations, with no details as to why, except for a clear direction to only contact AAU about the issue as they will not assist us or explain their reasoning. We have a plethora of sources for this claim.,
5.) The acting school director of AAU told me, Sarah Ryan, directly, that she had “no previous knowledge this would happen.” She even went on to claim “shock” at the turn of events. Therefore while Adobe blames AAU squarely, AAU is claiming complete and total ignorance. I personally find this highly suspicious given the well-orchestrated plan to support Adobe in an advertising campaign, using AAU student work, and AAU real estate. This joint campaign was organized months before the cancellations took place. AAU and Adobe are in a public business relationship. It is self-evident and their joint campaign took preparation, well before the theft of our software, and subsequent push towards adopting the very product on the advertisements. This makes the claim of ignorance absurd, and insulting to all involved.
6.) The licenses installed on our computers make no reference to our software being time limited, revocable, or even student editions. We have read them, with lawyers. Again, written, documented proof.
7.) Adobe will not show us proof that the cancellations were valid. They will not produce any documentation or make any public announcements. In fact I have, in writing, from customer support at Adobe, that no such document exists to prove the time limitation of my software - because there isn't such language anywhere.
8.) AAU will not produce any documentation to support their position to force the adoption of Creative Cloud for current,or past students. They will not prove the terms of the licensing contract with Adobe either. The only public announcement that was made offered no details on how they would support us at all, let alone defend our consumer rights.
9.) AAU’s acting director, Sue Rowley, is publicly telling student reps that we, the students, need to support Adobe’s financial model. This is a direct conflict of interest. Her job is to lead our university and support students seeking higher education. She has instead publicly stated her allegiance and support for a billion dollar company’s marketing strategy. She empathizes with it, and went as far as to tell me I should "want" Creative Cloud. This conflict of interest deserves recognition and investigation.
10.) George Brown College also had their CS6 licenses revoked by Adobe in a similar turn of events. That college was able to have the license keys returned to students, after applying pressure to Adobe on behalf of their student body. AAU has been made aware of this fact, and has not replied to it.
11.) Friday August 26th, 2014 AAU was meant to release a statement about “options” for “alumni (only)” which was never released. Licensure was not dependent upon graduation status at the time it was conveyed, making this statement confusing. AAU canceled their plans to finally make a statement (after nearly one month of requests) and we are still left with no answers.
12.) A Creative Cloud subscription will cost 600$ annually, per person, with raises in rates yearly, for life. This unexpected cost is too much for many to bear, putting their livelihoods in risk.
In conclusion:
We had a contract. Adobe (and possibly AAU) broke it. AAU has done nothing to defend us, and may be complicit in our misfortune. Students are being fed information that is not rooted in the facts, or relevant to the simple issue at hand. AAU attempts to distract us with irrelevant topics and details.
We all had software, which people depend on to make a living, and earn an education. It was stolen without warning, and it has not been returned. It was deactivated from personal computers without their consent. People have lost time, money, opportunities, and in a few cases housing as a result.
Don’t get distracted by the spin, or the superfluous details. This is robbery and people have been massively impacted by it – financially, emotionally, and creatively.

For a number of these technologies, I've heard of them but have not been inclined to investigate, which seems like it would be useful info to Adobe.

Acrobat Updater reboots for both Reader and Professional

I was recently prompted to install the latest updates for Acrobat Reader and Acrobat 8 Professional (I have both installed on my system). I was disappointed to note that first Updater updated one, prompted for reboot, then updated the other and prompted for reboot *again*. Why can't it be implemented to reboot only once?

It probably can be but Adobe doesn't recommend or support having both installed on the same machine so they aren't going to put any work in to it.
But if that's the only problem you have with both installed, consider yourself fortunate...

If we upgrade to a Professional Edition DPS license can we create an unlimited number of Single edition apps for iPad, iPhone and Android devices?

I work for a organisation based in Sydney and we have a team license for creative cloud (single edition).
We have been producing single folio apps for the iPad and want to continue this through 2015.
At the moment we can only create apps for the iPad platform. If we upgrade to a Professional Edition DPS license can we create an unlimited number of Single edition apps for iPad, iPhone and Android devices?
We do not need multi-folio apps as we are not a publishing company.

File format for professional printing

(In case it's relevant I'm using CS2, but I think it probably doesn't matter.)
I have some logos that I'm publishing for people to use for a variety of purposes. I want to keep the number of file formats to as few as reasonably possible in order not to confuse everyone. My question is, what vector-based format should I use for professional printers?
I originally assumed that .ai would be too narrowly supported (for instance, I'm advised that Quark can't read .ai files) so I opted for .eps, thinking that this would be recognised by virtually every graphics program. However, I've since discovered that eps doesn't handle a critical graphical element as I'd thought it would:
For the sake of simplicity (rather than getting too involved in the actual logo design), imagine a white circle with a standard drop shadow outside it fading smoothly away the further you get from the circle's edge. This is supposed to sit on any coloured background, with the parts of the shadow gradient that aren't grey (if that makes sense) being transparent. The trouble is that, apparently, in Quark (and maybe other programs for all I know), this shaded area comes out with a white background. I've mocked up an approximate comparison - attached - of how it ought to look and how it actually comes out.
The upshot of all that is that, as far as I can tell, eps is not the right format. So I come back to my request: can anyone recommend a file format which Illustrator can produce that is:
- vector-based
- compatible with all common graphics programs
- able to handle faded drop shadows correctly?

Agreed for printing CMYK is preferred but, i gather that there are some digital printers that prefer RGB files... hence my caveat.
however rips with color precise elements that can hit things like PMS colors require vector art with embedded swatches.
Whatever the method, if you have a tiff file, you're safe. But, it's not flexible except for downscaling.
A pdf is generally preferred, as even if the sender forgets to convert the fonts, you can always open the file in Photoshop and have the file be read accurately.

For those of you that are deep into lightroom, i have been studying for a year about lightroom and finally want to start my Official Lightroom Library and Catalog based on after a year of playing with multiple catalogs and learning the program but trying to have a deep understanding about how lightroom should be used.

I am a professional photographer that shoots Commercial Jobs , but also loves to shoot Portraits, Travel, Street photography,and Fine Art work. I bought a new imac transfered my data via timemachine and now when i want to open aperture it asks for my serial and when i put it in it says that is your upgrade serial please put in your original serial which i have no idea what that would be box gone

i used time machine to reinstall all products on a new imac machine. everything seems to be installed but when i open aperture it asks for my serial # and when i put it in it says that is your upgrade serial.. we want the original serial #. that box is long gone, how do i find that serial #
