QT won't open mp4

When I try to open an mp4 file, I get the message: The movie is not in a format that QuickTime Player understands.
Then I go to the page that supposedly "tells me more" and it clearly says QT will open mp4 files.
Anyone know what's going on?
Thanks,

  • Quicktime 7.1.3 and iTunes won't open .mp4 movies

Both my PowerMac G4 and MacBook will not open mp4 files in quicktime anymore. After updating both programs movies that used to play now will not play nor import into the itunes library. Quicktime gives an error "the movie could not be opened"

Did you repair permissions (and I know you didn't)?
    If not, do that.
Download the full installer for iTunes and QT separately and if necessary, repair permisisons, install them , repair pemissions again after the reboot.

  • After Effects CS3 won't open mp4 H264 videos

    Hi people.
I've just bought a Samsung HMX10 that captures video footage directly for mp4 files with H264 codec. The problem is After Effects won't import any of the files recorded by this camera and gets the 'unsupported filetype or extension ( 0 :: 1 )' message. Premiere accepts the same files just fine. Is there a way to make After Effects use the same codecs as Premiere and/or some software to convert this files to some AE friendly format without losing much quality?
    Thanks

As Sébastien said, convert or transcode it. Other alternatives to putting it into a QT container include for instance using tools like SUPER© to adjust the stream structure. Making AE use the same routines like premiere is not possible, but it wouldn't do much good, anyway, I would say. While Premiere can simply ignore things like open GOPs or other "bad stuff", AE can't, as it always needs to reconstruct a full frame for processing. Also be aware, that there is a million minor varaitions on the theme, as every camera manufacturer seems to have his on philosophy on teh matter, so some incompatibilities are sometimes inevitable. In your case however, these issues may already be covered in CS4, so if you have the time, consider giving it a spin and possibly upgrade to it. in the long run, it may be more efficient than always haveing to take a detour and the better integration with Premiere via Dynamic Link may also have additional benefits for you...

  • Quicktime Player 10.0 won't open mp4 files-Help, ASAP!

Error message: "The document “[x].mp4” could not be opened. The movie is not in a format that QuickTime Player understands."
    YIKES!
I'm just trying to play the danged file in Quicktime. Nothing fancy. The file plays fine on a G5 system running 10.5 8 (with QT 7.x), but I need to make a presentation with the laptop running 10.6. This is the first time that I have tried to play a mp4 file with the Player. It's possible that I have been able to play mp4s previously, using another program (under OS 10.6), but I don't recall. All recent software updates installed.

If you did an upgrade install QT7 gets moved to the Utilities folder, and if you had QT7 Pro, you'll still have it and the QT7 player in the Utilities folder will have all your old features.
That said, there's no reason why, if one has both Flip4Mac and Perian, you shouldn't be able to play most anything in QTX. At any rate, my QTX certainly plays mp4 files without any problem. However the largest mp4 I have handy is about 50MBs, so I can't check to see if size is a problem. I don't know why it would be though.

  • Quick time player 10.3 won't open .mp4 file

I purchased an .mp4 file, downloaded it and tried to play it.  QuickTime Player 10.3 opened automatically.  QuickTime Player error message appeared stating that the application could not open the file.  I went to the Apple Support page that lists files that QuickTime should open and .mp4 was right there on the list.  The file appeared to try to "convert" into something else and then disappeared from the screen (when I clicked on "Tell Me More").
Any ideas on how I can play the file?

Try with vlc, if this doesn't show your video them the file may be corrupt.

  • Have v10.6.8/Quicktime 10: can't open .mp4 (mpeg4) vidoes - what's up w/that???

Downloading videos successful but Quicktime won't open .mp4 type:
    get error message:
Clicking "Tell Me More" = page stating Quicktime CAN 'open' .mp4 files: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3775?viewlocale=en_US
    Advise please ...

When you get prompted to choose an application to view those files in, you're not limited to the one it might have selected for you; you can navigate to other apps and areas of your hard drive to find the one you want (if any).
If people are sending you WMV files in email, your best option is to save the file to your Desktop and then drag it onto Safari or open Safari with a new window or tab and drag the file into the browser window. Before you do that, download the WMV viewer for Safari here (it's free):
    http://flip4mac.com/
If they're sending you links to video files on the web, you can view those in Safari by clicking on the link if Safari is your default browser, and if not, then you can copy the link and paste it into Safari to view.
    Hope this helps,

  • Itunes 10 Installs but won't open - Please Help

I had Itunes 10 installed working on my computer. I installed a program which also installed an older version of Quicktime which I think was version 6.5. The next time I tried to open Itunes it said I needed verion 7.5 of Quicktime to open Itunes please reinstall Itunes. Now comes the problem. I have installed and uninstalled Itunes about 10 times, everytime it install ok but does not open when I click on the icon. The itunes.exe file opens in task manager for a few seconds then closes. I have searched a few places for solutions with no avail. I have tried the correct order of removing apple programs and deleting temp folder and internet cache. I have tries msconfig but can't find any of the programs which have affected other users. I have tried creati9ng another user account for windows but Itunes still won't open. Can anyone please help. My computer is Windows 7 32 bit. Thank in advance.

No, the program I installed was Winavi MP4 which coverts video to ipod psp format etc.
Ack, that one's just as bad. It's been causing this sort of grief for iTunes users for over five years now.
What it has probably done here is drop old versions of QuickTime componentry in unorthodox locations on the PC (usually down in your operating system files). So we're going to go looking for that.
First we'll adjust some view settings on the PC.
    1. From the Start menu, click Open.
    2. In the Organize menu, click Folder and Search Options.
    3. Click the View tab.
    4. In the "Advanced settings" pane under "Hidden files and folders" make sure that the "Show hidden files and folders" option is selected, and the "Hide extensions for known file types" option is unchecked.
    5. Click OK.
Now, in Computer, open your C drive (or whichever drive your operating system is installed on).
    Open the "Windows" folder.
    Open the "System32" folder.
What files or folders can you see in there with QuickTime in the file or folder name? (In a standard installation of QuickTime, you should see precisely two files ... QuickTime.qts and QuickTimeVR.qtx ... and no QuickTime folders whatsoever.)

  • IMovie Won't Import MP4 Files

For some reason iMovie '11 won't let me import videos.  Specifically, I'm trying to add MP4 files that I copied to my hard drive from my GoPro HD 960.  For GoPro users, I used the R2 (720p) format.  They open properly in QuickTime and VLC but can't be imported into iMovie (or iPhoto).  When I select File-->Import-->Movies and browse to the directory where I saved all the .mp4 files on my hard drive, they're all greyed out.  And actually, it seems that just about no video files at all on my computer can be added (all greyed out)--even other MP4 files.
I downloaded MPEG Streamclip but that says "unrecognized file format" when I try opening the videos.  I also installed Perian and rebooted.
    In case it helps:
    - I have an Intel MacBook running OS X 10.6.8 with iLife '11
    - QuickTime info for the video format says "H.264, 1280 x 720, Millions; AAC, 2 channels, 48000 Hz"
    - VLC says "Stream 0 (Video) - Codec: avc1" and "Stream 1 (Audio) - Codec: mp4a"
Any ideas?  This is incredibly frustrating!

Why iMovie Won't Import MP4 Files?
Technically, iMovie does import MP4 video. However, iMovie only import MP4 files that are encoded with MPEG4/AAC or H.264/AAC data. And yet, MP4 is a video container format that may contain various audio and video codec (and sometimes even subtitle streams included). If the MP4 file is not encoded with iMovie support codec, iMovie will refuse to import this kind of MP4 video.
How to Solve Can't Import MP4 into iMovie?
In order to successfully import all kinds of MP4 files to iMovie, a recommended solution is to convert iMovie unrecognized MP4 to iMovie supported video format.
iDealshare VideoGo is just the right MP4 to iMovie Converter which can convert various MP4 to iMovie supported MPEG-4, MPEG-2, MOV or DV. Besides converting MP4 to iMovie, iDealshare VideoGo also helps to convert other video formats including AVI, WMV, MPEG, VOB, MOV, AVCHD, MTS, M2T, M2TS, TOD, MOD, XAVC, FLV, MKV, SWF, 3GP, MVI, ASF and etc to iMovie video format.

  • Photoshop CS5 Extended won't covert mp4 files to layers?

I recently downloaded cs5 and it won't download .mp4 files to layers. whenever i go to file > import > video frames to layers, the mp4 files are greyed out and i can only click on .avi files.
there is no high quality converter from mp4 to avi, so it's quite frustrating.
any ideas about what may be wrong?
    thanks,
    catherine.

    Hi Catherine
Try importing it as a layer inside an already open file:
Layer > Video Layers > New Video Layer From File
If that still doesn't work, try:
    File>Place
but it will be opened as a smart object

  • IMovie'11 won't import mp4 movies

I have some large mp4 files that I'm trying to import into iMovie so I can edit them into shorter clips.
When I select "open with", iMovie is greyed out.
I can open the movie with QuickTime, and select export to iMovie, and the file appears in the iMovie dropbox on my computer, but iMovie still won't open it, or even recognise that the movie is there.
When I try "import" in iMovie and select the file, it takes about 10 hours importing, and then nothing happens, no error message, nothing, I just see iMovie open, and unchanged.
I am using iMovie'11 version 9.0.7 amd Mac OSx 10.8
    Thanks!

  • Quicktime is not opening .mp4 files anymore

Hi, my quicktime stopped opening .mp4 files I record with my cellphone, that's pretty strange because I thought it was a problem with the phone but I can open them everywhere but in my Mac. This happen after I updated quicktime.
Does anybody knows what could it be?
    Thanls

I am having a similar problem. .mp4s are not playing. Used Handbrake to create an .mp4 file. It plays fine on every system but the one I need it to play on. Quicktime 7 won't play any video, just a white screen like it is missing a codec. I haven't had this problem before, and nothing has been recently installed that would effect Quicktime. Is there an easy way to reinstall the codecs? I've reinstalled Quicktime several times with no effect, recreated the .mp4 file several times, everything else plays fine. Any ideas?

  • Quicktime files suddenly won't open

Hi, I'm running OS 10.8.5.  Recently updated some codecs and various other updates for my OS--the most recent updates.  Now my videos will not open, nor will jpg's open in Preview! (?)  No error messages, just won't open.  I am a video artist, and have various file types--it won't open any .mov, .mp4, or any others.  All do open in VLC, so it's not the vids.  I've been running QT 10.2 with no problem till now.  Some weirdness: I noticed that when I updated iTunes (which may have nothing to do w/ this), it updated to the Yosemite version (12.0.1.26), though my OS is Mountain Lion.  Help?

Unfortunately, the latest version of QuickTime does not have the ability to export using third-party plug-ins, however Apple has made QuickTime 7 available to install alongside QuickTime X. You can install it from the Snow Leopard install disk or by running a Quartz (*.qtz) file.
QuickTime 7 will install to your Applications/Utilities folder.

  • Clients complain agreement is small or won't open (in "Please sign" email)

We have a lot of clients who are 65+ years old. We send them an agreement to sign and after they receive the "Please sign" email they call to complain that the agreement won't open, that the agreement is fuzzy, that the words are too small, etc.
In most of these cases we have finally come to realize that they are trying to interact with the thumbnail image embedded in the email -- they never click on the link, "Click here to review and sign..." I think there is a small simple fix for 90% of these problems.
The thumbnail image of the agreement should be a link that reacts the same way as the text link "Click here to review and sign..."
I have opened two different bug reports and a feature request (See ticket #297792 and #272322 and http://ideas.echosign.com/forums/21617-echosign-general/suggestions/6585930-make-agreement -thumbnail-in-initial-email-a-clicka).
In six months, this has not been corrected, and I have not received any substantial feedback. It seems like an obvious and easy change. Is there some problem I'm not seeing? Has this issue gotten to the right people?
I think this problem affects a larger number of people than you would expect. People have become accustomed to clicking on a thumbnail image and opening it, and that does not work in the emails EchoSign sends. I really consider this a bug and not a feature request.

This is correct Steve.  I have one very irrate new client who can not open it and a friend who is also having trouble.   The server I use shows the downloads going through.  I don't have an iPad to test it so I have no idea what is happening on their end.  My friend said she is getting the circle with line through it.  The client doesn't reply.
I just uploaded the video to Photobucket for a group share.  You'll see I'm a beginner in the design area but the formatting seems like it should be pretty straight forward.
Here is the link to that:
    http://s856.photobucket.com/albums/ab127/HoofMechanics/?action=view&current=AdvTec-RimNotc h-FtLt-iPad-CustomSetting.mp4 -  Custom Setting
    http://s856.photobucket.com/albums/ab127/HoofMechanics/?action=view&current=AdvTech-RimNot ch-FtLt-IpadMed.mp4 - Regular Setting - Med
I have this on a server who automates a link to the client after payment and that is where they are getting the video from. I can't set this up for a group share but can send it to an individual email address to test.  This is the first time I've sent it out from the photobucket format so not sure if this will make a difference in it opening to the iPad.  I guess we will see if this is part of the problem.
    Thanks for the reply.

  • Firefox can play YouTube, but can't open mp4 from pc?

Videos play perfectly fine when i visit YouTube.com; I mean, i got the latest Flash plug-in, so i expect the browser to play Flash-related videos. But, when i open mp4 or flv files by clicking File -> Open FIle (Ctrl + O), these files are not playing at all!!!! If i right-click on the screen, it shows menu about QuickTime plug-in. This is driving me crazy!!!! I have a presentation at school, and that computer won't let me change the settings. How is this even possible?

When you load a video on YouTube, Firefox starts the Flash plugin with YouTube's SWF player. The SWF player imports and plays the actual MP4 or FLV media. Firefox doesn't associate Flash with these formats directly.
Can you use a stand-alone player, such as QuickTime or VLC to play the downloaded file outside of the browser?
If you need to play it in the browser, perhaps someone has posted instructions on how to do it. Because of security restrictions, you probably would need to save a web page file (.html) and a SWF player into the same folder as the media in order to get everything to work together.
