QTSS won't recognize reference movie

I have uploaded a reference movie (which contains links to alternate movies) that to a Quicktime Streaming Server directory.
When I open the URL in Quicktime Player 7, I get an 'unsupported media type 415' error. If I upload the reference movie to a folder on my web site instead, the appropriate video will start to stream. However, QT Player 'thinks' it is a live broadcast.
Something still isn't right.
* ALL files in the folder within the QTSS directory have hinted tracks.
* the non-referenced movies on the QTSS all play when the URLs are opened in QT Player7.
* the reference movie, which is supposed to call the appropriate movie for streaming, reports 'unsupported media type 415' error when I try to open the URL in Quicktime Player 7.
* the reference movie, which is supposed to call the appropriate movie for streaming, works fine when I open the file on my hard drive, i.e. it starts playing the appropriate file from the streaming server (I used absolute URLs)
* the reference movie, which is supposed to call the appropriate movie for streaming, works fine if I upload it to a directory on my web site (http) instead of a directory on the streaming server (rtsp).
I used MakeRefMovieX to make the reference movie. To keep things simple, I did not flatten a default movie into the reference movie.
The Apple tuorial for reference movies says:
Save the reference movie and place it and all the alternate movies in the same directory. Upload the directory or folder to the server.
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/tutorials/refmovies.html
Another tutorial says:
http://www.iupui.edu/~nmstream/tutorials/quicktimevideo.php
FTP this file to your streaming server and ideally place it under the same folder that holds the streaming video files.

To get the captioned text to appear BELOW the movie,
do you simply adjust the coordinates for the text box
in the text file before adding it to the reference
movie?
Hi Cris
Well the answer is yes and no, yes you do have to set the coordinates of both the movie and the text, but these are controlled by a third file known as a .smil file.
Here's how you make it all work, (all these documents are located on the http server, in the same directory together, with the exception of the http document, which can be located in a different folder if you choose:
Documents involved are:
http web page, with QT java code embedded in it, http://www.apple.com/quicktime/tutorials/embed.html
.smil file, which contains the window size, movie and captioning text file.
.mov or text file, containing the captioning text only, with timecode reference as part of the file.
MSTR.mov, also know as the reference movie, containing the alternate movie locations.
You need to create an http document with the QT java code embedded in it, the window size, which needs to be able to accommodate the movie window, the text window and if you choose the movie control bar, which is controlled via java code, which references the .smil file.
When a patron opens this document, this sends a request to the .smil file, which is located in the same directory as the MSTR.mov, (ref movie) as well as the .txt or .mov text file. The .smil file then contains all of the information that controls over all window size of the displayed parts, MSTR.mov, (ref movie) and text or .mov text file.
You may wonder why the window size is in both the http document as well as the .smil file, this is because the http document is making a hole for the .smil file to be displayed in the http document and the window size in the .smil file is for combining all the independent files or as you put it, coordinates for each part. These appear in the hole, created in the http documents QT java script window size, (think of the http document as the mask for the .smil file.)
When the .smil file is accessed, the reference movie contacts the QT RTSP streaming server, then places the movie and text, (captioning file) together and are sent to the http document where they are viewed as a unified web page.
The .smil file has specific code and can be found here: http://developer.apple.com/documentation/quicktime/Conceptual/QTScripting_SMIL/i ndex.html
When I get back to work on Monday, (if you need me to) I can post you both the java scripting we use in our web pages and the .smil coding in our .smil files.

  • Idvd won't recognize the .mov file I made in iMovie,

so now i can't bring it into a dvd project.  Any solutions?  I made dvd with it before.  I'd like to be able to use the idvd themes.

This is how I've done it in iMovie 11 - I haven't used it for some time and I don't know if there is a later version or if this will work (Apple may well have crippled it like other programs):
Don't use Share to iDVD, it degrades the quality.
Select Share>Export using QuickTime. In the 'Export' drop-down menu choose 'Movie to QuickTime Movie.
Click Options. Uncheck 'Prepare for Internet Streaming'.
Video: Settings: Quality - best. Frame rate - current. Compression type - try 'None'. Size - PAL 720 x 576*. Do not deinterlace. This will take around real time.
Import into iDVD and proceed in usual way.
*For UK. If in USA use suitable settings for NTSC.

  • IDVD selectively won't recognize .mp4 format - how to burn for dvd player?

    Hi -
I'm trying to burn a .mp4 movie for my gf's family so they can watch it on their TV instead of my tiny comp. After trying DiskUtility and iTunes (both to no avail, DU wouldn't even allow me to select a .mp4 format to burn on the DVD; iTunes burnt the movie, but it doesn't play on the DVD player ...). I thought I'd try iDVD, but it won't recognize the movie I'd like to burn - says the format is unrecognized. Tried with another movie, same format (.mp4) and it worked just fine.
I'm really at a loss - I didn't expect it would be so difficult to burn a DVD! Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
    Kind regards,
    Rax

Alright, my results correspond with Russ' hypothesis: both videos I tried are in the same format & at the same FPS, the only difference b/w them is the audio. The one that worked is Stereo (L R), the one that does not is the 5.1.
Unfortunately, I do not have Quick Time Pro, I just have QTP 10.1 that came w/ Lion (& an older version that I added b/c it allows playback speed control). Here, the export options are:
    480p
    720p
    iPod touch & iPhone 3GS
iPad, iPhone 4 & Apple TV
    Audio only
None of these were an obvious choice to me, any suggestions? I've heard something about "Toast", would this be an easier / better option?
Thank you for on-going help. Very much appreicated.
    Kind regards,

  • Log and Transfer: FCE4 won't recognize files from my camera

    Hi ...
I have a Sony XHR-NX5U and am capturing video on an optional Sony 128GB hard drive built for this camera. I've shot AVCHD video in both 1080/60i HQ and 1080/60i FX formats, and the camera produces video files in an MTS format (nestled in a series of folders), along with accompanying CPI files (I don't know what these are for).
My FCE4 program doesn't allow me to either import these files or use log/transfer. I've been forced to buy an external program to convert the MTS files into MOV files and then import these (Log and Transfer still won't recognize these MOV files).
What can I do to get FCE4 to recognize and allow the files directly from my camera?
Thanks in advance for any insight you can provide.
    - matt

I see your camera can be switched to record a bunch of ways.
    Try this one:
    AVCHD FH (17Mbps) 1920x-1080/60i
It should work with Log and Transfer over USB.
Also make sure you start a New Project in FCE with the Easy Setup AVCHD-Apple Intermendaite Codec1920 x 1080i60 selected and active.
Some cameras do not seem to transfer if mixed media is on the card. Try a test with the above media ONLY on the card.

  • Hi, since i put some mp4 video or DVD files on my external hard drives final cut prox won't recognize my hard drives, i move all the video files and the problem still exist. somebody have the solution

Hi, since i put some mp4 video or DVD files on my external hard drives final cut prox won't recognize my hard drives, i move all the video files and the problem still exist. somebody have the solution

Did the back and forth between PC and Mac file systems screw up my files somehow?
Yes. Unfortunately the move has almost certainly caused the loss of the resource data that would have been (invisibly) attached to those files.
By adding a specific .mov extension after the fact you will have helped the Mac correctly identify the file type / asscoiations but also significantly you will have physically changed the filename eg from "clip" to "clip.mov". This means that when you come to reconnect the media in FCP , then FCP will be looking for files that no longer exist at the given path eg when specifically looking for our example clip called "clip" of course it won't find it.
Try this as a test... first remove the ".mov" extension from one or more of the clips, select those clips and press Cmd-Opt-I to open an Info window for the selection. You'll see an "Open with:" popup and in that popup you should choose QuickTime Player (if its a Unix Executable then it will initially list Terminal as the appropriate app, you have to choose Other... then in the open dialog choose Enable > All Applications and then navigate to and select the Quicktime Player app as the appropriate app). After you've done that restart FCP and see if you can now reconnect to those clips.

  • IPhoto won't recognize *.MOV file for playing and for importing

My iPhoto is giving me an "unreadable file format" error on *.mov files after I upgraded to iPhoto '11.   I have problem with video files that were working in iPhoto before and on files trying to import from my iphone or from my camera.   I made new library and tried to import *.mov file to the new library to check if my library is corrupted.  I get same error message.   The *.mov file plays fine with quicktime when I import files using Preview to my computer.   I just cannot import new video to iPhoto and play videos from iPhoto.
How do I make iPhoto recognize the *.mov file again and make the video file play properly?  I miss my old iPhoto

    Henji,
have you used a maintainance application lately, that has cleaned some caches? Then check, if you still have the file "com.apple.xpchelper.cache"  in the System Library in the folder "/System/Library/Caches/".
If this file is missing, that might be the reason that you cannot play or import videos any longer. Then restore it from your backup, if you have a clone of your system.  ALJ posted a link to a copy of this file in another thread: Re: Import video to Aperture library on Mountain Lion

  • Library Issue:  Existing External Drive - New Computer Won't Recognize

    Hi,
I've had an external drive library for quite some time. I just bought a new laptop, downloaded iTunes, pointed it to F:\Music where my library is and it won't recognize the files. There are a handful of songs that come with iTunes, so I did a Consolidate to see what would happen. They are visible and available from my F: drive but none of my "original" files. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Unless I am missing something, this is a real pain the tukus. I moved all of my mp3's to an external hard drive to free up space in my c drive. My Itunes cannot find it. Do I really have to move items into Itunes folder by folder??? Is there not a search for "music files" which moves it into the itunes folder, wherever that may be? I see references where the site seems to say that the physical file doesn't need to be in the Itunes folder but only references it. I have a ton of folders. Each individually??? I have moved compied pasted and created som many folders that say I tunes, I think I must have triplicates of all files. This is a mess. Why can't I get Itunes/Ipod to find the folder where I want my files to reside-off my C drive?

  • Itunes won't recognize ipod and videos gone

I have a 30GB Video Ipod and itunes won't recognize it. I have to keep putting the music files back in and converting them. Also the Movie and TV Shows I bought disappeared. I have a Windows XP Home Edition, and itunes 7. I downloaded itunes about 4 or 5 months ago, it that helps. My ipod shows up in my computer though. I want to know:
    1. How can I get itunes to recognize my ipod
    2. How do I get itunes to keep and remember my files
    3. How do I get my videos back?
    4. Which version of itunes should I get and how do I get it?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
This article addresses both error messages...
iPod shows up in Windows but not in iTunes
As for the iPod not turning off. Try resetting...

  • Itunes library too large and won't recognize all files, just new ones but

still shows the old ones and their location in the library. I was keeping the library on the 2TB external drive. It got too large. Now I want to put the music on one of the 1TB drives and just the videos on the 2TB drive. From my PC, I can watch everything.
I cannot download to an iPod or iTouch anything from the 2TB drive. When I hit max capacity, I temporarily started saving on one of my internal 2TB drives (space wh*re, I know)before I hit on what my solution would be, and now I can only download from that location. Why?
What can I do? I even tried switching the library location back, and it won't recognize anything. I'm screwed, and I have all this material... YEARS of collecting...
    Someone please help me...

To clarify, currently on the 2TB external drive are music and videos. I want to split them up and hopefully save some space - and maybe foresee problems in the future when I hit max capacity on the 1TB external, and think about a 4GB (not the best option I see at this time) or another 2 2TB drives.
Doesn't the Library file just save locations when iTunes closes down so everything should be OK? I mean, the prog can recognize everything, it just won't download to anything, even if I move from the external drive an older movie to the new drive, it refuses to "see" the movie so I can download it.

  • My old mac and 3g won't recognize my iphone4s - and the new itunes on my pc won't recognize the 3g

Hi, I'm having issues syncing my information from two separate computers to my new phone.
I backed up my old iPhone 3g on my iBookG4. The G4 does not support the iPhone 4s because it's too old and I cannot update to Lion or Leopard because it's too old.
I have a Dell that I bought in 2009 (i know i know, it was cheap and i had to get it for a class i was taking) - anywho, I have downloaded the new version of iTunes for the iPhone 4s and this version of iTunes won't recognize the 3g - I'm guessing because it is so outdated.
So, I can't get the old computer to read the new phone or the new computer to read the old phone.
What I attempted was home sharing with iTunes and that got all my music and apps, but contacts and calendars I can't move.
    Any suggestions??
    thanks.
ps this mac is so old that the letter a just popped off the keyboard

Syncing of devices running iOS4 and higher requires iTunes 9.x and higher.
iOS 4.3 and higher requires iTunes 10.x or higher.
Regardless, iTunes 9.x and 10.x require Windows XP Service Pack 3.
Is your Windows system current with all Windows updates?

  • New hard drive won't recognize my iPhone

My hard drive crashed and my replacement hard drive won't recognize my iPhone. I can see all my content, but can't move or replace it. I was able to access content on my iTouch just fine and luckily synched my contacts back into my laptop, but no dice on the phone. Any ideas? • Won't recognize inserted disks

The drive in my black MacBook won't recognize an inserted CD or DVD unless it's blank. If it's blank, it asks what I want to do, but if it's a data disc of any kind - for example, the Snow Leopard install DVD - the drive takes it but as far as the OS is concerned, there's no disc in the drive.
Once I go to restart the computer, however, it sees the disk and mounts it.
    Any clues?

Hi PWolves04, the fix bobapcoed described probably won't help you because your computer still "sees" your CD drive--it just doesn't read the disks you insert. The fix makes your computer see your drive again when it has completely disappeared from "My Computer". Speaking from personal experience (I've had to replace three CD/DVD-Rom drives over the years) one of the first signs that they're dying is the inability to recognize and read disks.
If you want to try the "Fix" before you move onto other troubleshooting avenues, here is a link to one thread that discusses it:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1457169?
I recommend that you search the Importing and Burning Category for entries by "toonz" for more information if you really think this will help.

  • Clean Install of 10.8.2 Won't Recognize the BackUp Drive as a Valid Time Machine Drive. Applications Needs to be Restored

Hi, for some reason my clean installed 10.8.2, when I use the Migration Assitant won't recognize Time Machine [It's mounted alright (Firewire 800 with green icon with the Time Machine logo) Western Digital, My Book Studio model. I probably should have opted for Apple's significantly expensive Time Machine when it comes to integration and backup]. It would go into Time Machine but the Restore would be dimmed out. All the snapshots are from Mountain Lion; I'm wondering why it's not compatible. If I try to restore the Applications it won't let it. I've manually copied the Documents, Desktop, Downloads, Movies, Music files but I can't find the the Applications folder in that external backup drive to copy from or at least see what apps I've installed and reinstall them.
How do I go about at least viewing what apps are in my latest Time Machine snapshot so I can reinstall- a blessing in disguise coz' at least it'll be more streamlined. It's prudent, by God's grace that I have another USB external drive with Snow Leopard on it to run some apps I've used before doing the clean install (I had to erase and zero-out the hard drive for security because it's part of the Apple hardisk replacement program which I'm thankful for- AppleCare is worth it for very expensive gadgets like this late-2009 iMac. Reinstalling and putting things back to normal is a little tedious, thankfully there are other projects to be busy with while it copies and downloads updates).
    Thank you in advance.
    God bless.

Hi. Thanks for the reply. Does Time Machine by default exclude System and Applications Folder (I didn't click any option to exclude those I remembered)? How do I not exclude the Applications folder and System files this time around?
In Time-Travel view when I point it to the Applications folder, it switches to the Volumes folder and the Restore is dimmed. I wonder if it's incompatible because it's not Apple's Time Machine or it's a bug with Moutain Lion (the drive is backing up the new clean install of Mountain Lion now but when I test it, use Migration Assistant if I need to restore things again, it still doesn't see it as a Time Machine backup).
What could be the solution? Should I reinstall my applications again (I guess that's a blessing in disguise, now I can declutter)?
    Thank you.

    help

That camera shoots H.264 in an .avi wrapper.
You will have to transfer the files via the Finder.
Get a free copy of MPEG Streamclip and convert them to QuickTime .mov using the H.264 codec if you are presumably editing in iMovie.
Note that your list of video codecs won't look like mine as I have Final Cut Pro, but H.264 is definitely an option for you.
