Quality loss: final movie has bad details

The title says pretty much all my problem, but first off let me describe my videos.
Skip to the underscore part for the direct question.
I used a clip I recorded from a flash animation from the web for my first part, and a 2nd one for the next part of my video.
Since I am experiencing this time, I decided to try making the final video in a lossless quality compared to the originals.
So, I "filmed" and encoded with the Apple FCP Uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2 (to preserve full color gradatings). These are my controls video, I refer to them as lossless in my experiencing.
I finished making my movie in iMovie and then rendered it with Expert Settings, and I asked for a Quicktime (container) with Apple FCP Uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2.
The problem is, the file is of much worse quality just by looking by a naked eye, and the file size is worse. I used the same codec as for input (both audio and video).
The input data rate: 165.32mbits/s
The ouput data rate: 199,97mbits/s
Could someone help me understand how come there is visible quality deteriotation despite having used the same setting? Clearly, a parameter of iMovie or iMovie itself is the direct cause.
I would appreciate any hint comments or suggestions, thank you.
Edit: I could show a screenshot to show what kind of deterioration I mean, but I don't know how to post it here.
Edited for a typo. there's probably more.

If your original footage is DV and you're using iMovie 08 or 09 then your problem is the same that the rest of us experience, mentioned in both iM09 & iDVD threads.
The root cause relates to iM08/09 adopting 'single field processing' used during the DV export process. It appears that Apple have lost interest in supporting DV format. I suggest that like a number of us you give Apple some negative feedback about it.
The problem and a protracted workaround is covered in this massive thread (99 A4 landscape pages if you print it!). It's a pleasure to read (when compared to ripping your finger nails off with a pair of bull-nose pliers). Steve Mullen PhD explains a process to deinterlace DV while converting to AIC etc which apparently overcomes the problem:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1882630&start=0&tstart=0
I'm yet to try it myself as I only read it last night.
I used to use iM HD on an iBook and never had a problem. Recently upgraded to a MacBook Pro and iLife 09 and then all the trouble started when I made my first movie from MiniDV tape. After three calls to Apple Support which got me nowhere I found a pile of threads in the Discussion Forum with the same grievance.
Another suggested workaround is to go back to iM HD/06 but I wanted iM 09 for the snazzy features like Dynamic Themes and Travel Maps etc so going back to iM HD is not a good solution for me.
Good luck.

    Hi
How to export a movie shot with a Canon HV20 and edited with iMovie HD with full quality settings ? is QT HDV 1080i25 the best way ?

  • Quality loss from .MOV to .AVI

Not quite sure what is going on here. When using QT Pro to export from .MOV to .AVI, the quality is significantly degraded. Any ideas why this is?
    Thanks!

    Any ideas why this is?
Both AVI and MOV files are generic containers so compare the codecs and data rates. Are the codecs used of similar or different levels of efficiency? If of the same level do they have similar video data rates? If not, did you increase the data rate to make up for the differences in encoding efficiency?

  • Image quality from DV footage has bad aliasing after import

Had to shoot DV footage with the Pana HVX-200, and shot at 480i-30p. Footage looks excellent during playback, but once imported into iMovie '08, the footage in playback has horrible alias "swim"
lines. Is this just a function of playback or is this how the video was captured? I tried both 30fps and 25fps in capture, but same result in both. Don't want to proceed with entire project if it's going to look like that. PLEASE HELP!!!

Hi JW and welcome to the RH community.
You are testing my memory here, but I think if you import the
original HPJ file rather than the HLP file, you can choose what
format your BMP files are converted into.
There is no mass way of resizing images. Use RH inbuilt
Resize tool - available in the Tools tab - for resizing images. I
find it by far and away the best tool for the job.

  • The final movie has some video errors

    Hi everyone!
I am doing an HD project for a client on FCP. I edited the video and exported the movie in QT format. But then I got a bunch of AVs with it and I realized that the hard-drive was MS DOS formatted... So I copied the project from that HD to a Mac-formatted HD using the Media Manager.... And I again exported the video as QT movie... The problem is this that it plays fine on QT Player but when I try to burn a DVD, it says video error...
I need to give this project to the client on a DVD so can somebody please guide me?

I need to give this project to the client on a DVD
Do they need a data DVD or a DVD-Video?

  • Importing .MTS files without any quality loss!

I recently shot a short documentary in Uganda for a non-profit with an HD camera. I left the camera with the organization and took the .Mts files back home on an external hard drive. Found out they won't import, oh no!
So I looked into converting them and have downloaded almost a dozen programs to convert the files but there is ALWAYS a noticeable quality loss. It has become REALLY frustrating and I need some solid advice on how to get this video in the Premiere at good quality. I need a good converting program Work arounds? What format should I convert into?
I also have Premiere Pro 1.5. I know it's a little older but it's all I've got (and can afford). Thank you VERY MUCH for the help!

The link I posted http://forums.adobe.com/thread/390605 is in the Premiere Elements FAQ area, but the software discussed at that link has nothing to do with PrElements... it is software to convert AVCHD to HDV so the HDV files may then be edited
As I said... I do not convert because I have CS5... but, the two programs mentioned in the 1st posting should, according to Steve, do what is needed

  • Quality of Photos after Making a movie is bad on TV

I routinely make movies of photos i take (in iPhoto), and the final product looks great on my computer monitor...but the quality on tv is not impressive at all. I have a high definition TV, and the photos are shot at high resolution, and the quality is just as bad whether I burn the final project on DVD (using iDVD), or output it from my video ipod to my TV.
I am thinking there must be a way that I can make the final output much better to be presented on tv.
If you need to know, i am using imovie 6.0.2
    Any suggestions?

    Hello Napoleon,
i don't have a real solution for you but one thing is this:
if you create a movie (even in HDV format), then burn it to DVD you will have some quality loss as you're compressing the source material to mpeg2 - sorry no HD-DVD yet. the only thing that will really look good on your HDTV is a HD source directly connected to your TV.
as for the photo aspect: pictures are different from video as explained in this article:
    http://www.scantips.com/no72dpi.html
the original link was posted in this FCP thread:

it's really about scanning, but i think it provides some really good insight .... as well as a good laugh
    hope this helps

  • After Effect to Final Cut (Quality Loss)

Does anyone know what's the best codec (besides Animation) and setting in After Effects?
I captured a bunch of footage using Final Cut Pro. I imported them to AE for some special effects and it went very well. Then, I exported them to my macbook and imported them back to Final Cut Pro. The result was kind of bad.
The quality wasn't t as good as the original (quality loss). Is there anything I can do to change this?
I tried to use the plugin from popcornisland (FCP2AE), but it didn't work for me because it brought the whole sequence from Final Cut Pro to After Effects ... while I just needed some certain footage to be edited in After Effects.

Animation is "the best." You're asking for our advice on a compromise, not the best. But you haven't told us why you refuse to use Animation. Most such complaints are based on the fact that Animation files are large. Of course they are, they're lossless. when you render them in your timeline, they are converted to your sequence settings and get very compact. But the original file is always available at the best possible rez. This is an excellent and efficient use of space and resources.

You have not bothered to tell us what format you're working in and "bad" is so totally subjective as to be meaningless.

Never heard of popcorn, thanks for the tip, I'll have to look it up.
If this popcorn thingy of yours only moves entire sequences to AE then just think about how you can make it for you. You can easily make a copy of your sequence, call it :Move tHis to AE,"use the blade to delete all of the the material you do not need to move to AE.

  • Quality loss in Imovie after finalizing

Having read alot about codecs and converting i'm still not able to figure out why there's quality loss after finalizing my project in Imovie. In the original .MTS files I can see, when played with the VLC player there's a little noise in the grey and dark area's but it's more then acceptable. After converting and finalizing it's a horror to watch. The weird thing is that the converted .MTS into .MOV files look better when played in Miro then in Quicktime.
What advice can you give me on reducing the noise and making sure the movie looks best when played from a DVD on flatscreen? I want to do the editing in the higest possible quality because in the future I want to burn to BluRay aswell (I know that full HD is only possible when you burn to BluRay)
    Here are the details:
    1. I imported the material, filmed in 25P (so I don't have to interlace) directly from my canon HF200 into Imovie. I can choose between 960X540 or original size.
    2. I choose original size and receive a warning that this can cause a negative effect on the quality. So maybe the problem is caused by my old and small laptop, see specifications underneath my questions.
    3. The converted mov. files in Imovie appear to have more noise then the original and after finalizing to HD 1080p the noise in the grey and black areas is almost unwatchable.
Is there anything I can do besides buy a new laptop?
    Thank you for your help!

  • My exported 2015 iMovie file has bad quality.

    Hello.
I just got a new MacBook pro, OS X Yosemite 10.10.3.  Using iMovie 10.0.7 (the latest version to my knowledge.)
I realize that this question has been beaten to death all over the internet, but I haven't made any headway STILL.  I just completed an edit that looks AMAZING in iMovie, and when I export it, the file is very distorted.  I'm exporting at the highest quality (1080p) and the file ends up being 8GB (8 minute movie) which I would think a big file like that would produce good quality.
I'm stuck.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Here's the upload (notice the distortion and grainy-ness during motion, again looks AMAZING in iMovie.)

    iMovie file has bad quality.
    hmmm, really?
    I pick up a scene ...
    <click for fullsize>
This is a 'killer' for any encoder! Those ultra-soft gradient in the sky shows no banding!
Not to say: superb! Compare to a less encoded version:
    <click for fullsize>
you see? THAT is bad quality! Tons of banding in the sky...
... post a scene, which doesn't fullfill your standards …
btw: what camera in use? settings? a GoPro I assume, those 'cinema' settings?
PS: you let YT play it in as 720/1080? ....

  • Export FULL HD, changes in COMPRESSOR QUALITY huge change in final movie

Hello. I have the SONY SR12E camcorder and shoot my movies in FULL HD 1920x1080 and use Final Cut (what else.. to render and get my final movies. I use Log and transfer to capture my movies into Final Cut and then Send to Compressor to create the final movie.
But I have an issue with the differences in FILE SIZE when I change the Compressor Quality from Encoder -> "Video : Settings...." in Compressor.
For example, ALL of the stream/clips (156 minutes total video) that I want to turn into a movie is a folder *20.4 GB* in size
When I submit ALL these clips into compressor and use COMPRESSOR QUALITY : BEST, I get a final movie file with size *72,4 GB* for the 156 minutes of FULL HD video.
When I lower a little the COMPRESSOR QUALITY to HIGH, the final movie is *28,7 GB* a lot of Gigabytes lower than 72,4 (and my WD TV could playback this file on my HighDef tv, but the 72,4 is playing with "stops" every 2-3 seconds)
When I play both output movies, I could not notice any difference in the video quality on my Apple 30'' monitor or my 46'' LCD Samsung, it seems the same to my eyes.
So WHY there is SO MUCH DIFFERENCE in movie size when using COMPRESSOR QUALITY : BEST and COMPRESSOR QUALITY : HIGH ....?
Since the folder with all the clips is just 20 Gigabytes HOW IS it possible to get a 72,4 Gigabyte movie when using BEST compressor quality?
    Thanks,
    Moschos.

I know how is this done, I work with Final Cut about a year. But you seem to don't know that THERE IS A H U G E difference both in Quality and SPEED if you export from within Final Cut and if you SEND TO COMPRESSOR which is the most correctly. First, you can select more details and settings from within Compressor and Compressor uses ALL THE CORES of my Mac Pro Nehalem 8 core which is not happening when you just export from within Final Cut. On the other hand, when you SEND TO COMPRESSOR you can then continue working with Final Cut Pro instead of the other way where you can not do anything.
    Anyway, thanks...

  • How to shoot 1080p/60, output to 720p/60, so Warp Stabilizer or zoom/crop has no quality loss?

I'm new to AE, and making a painful transition form FCP to Premiere, so please be patient, I don't understand many of the subtalties of these apps yet.  :-)
Also, please forgive the long explaination, I'm having trouble articulating the problem...
I'm shooting in 1080p/60, AVCHD.  I plan mainly to output to 720p/60.
The idea being, that if I need to warp stabilize footage, or zoom/crop, I can do so without any quality loss.
I don't want to edit the project in 1080p/60, because if I stabilize it, and it blows up the image, it will result in quality loss. Then when I scale down for final output, that pixilated/crapified footage will be present just in scaled down form.
I don't want the footage to be scaled down first, then, when I stabilize it, I'm blowing up 720p footage (thus defeating the whole purpose of doing this) and once again, outputting pixilated/crappified footage.
What are the steps / workflow to set up Premiere and the stabilizing shots in AE, such that I'm working in 720p, but using the 1080p footage, so that extra resolution is available when I need to crop, zoom, stabilize, etc. the footage... and can do so without any quality loss?  It would be great to have that ability to zoom in on elements in post, almost 2x, and not see any loss of quality.
    Thanks in advance!
    -Jason Wallace

100% positive.  There is a family of lesser known Prosumer Panasonic cameras (my particular model is the TM700) that record 1080p/60.  It's a 3-chip, CMOS, that genuinly records at that resolution and frame rate.  Has audio input, headphone output, shoe mount, zebra stripes, touch screen, good battery life, and a manual focus ring (fly by wire, can be set for exposure, framerate, or focus).  Also has very good low light capabilities, that are much better than the published specs would lead you to believe.  The firmware is a bit goofy, and was clearly designed by engineers, not people who have ever shot video.  For example some things that should be easily accessible, are buried in menus, while other useless "fluff" features are front and quickly accessible.... but if you can live with a few stupid firmware compromises, it's absolutely AMAZING bang for the buck, and well under $1k to buy.
Note: if I'm not mistaken, the camera can only output via HDMI 1080i/60, but for absolute certain the video files being recorded are genuine 1080p/60. (This has lead to some confusion and forum arguements as to whether the camera is actually 1080p/60)
This was one of the main reasons for my moving from FCP to Premiere, as Premiere Pro handles the 1080p/60 AVCHD files, while FCP requires they first be transcoded and inflated to a intermediate codec.

  • Bad quality when play mov or mp4

I want to play mov or mp4 by quicktime. In my laptop it play well but in my another computer the quality for video is very bad!
Following is the features of that computer:
    Windows XP Pro SP2
    VIA C7 Processor 1500MHZ 512M RAM
Graphics card: VIA/S3G UniChrome Pro IGP
I upload the screen snapshot of this problem on my blog. Please look at the following url:
    http://apolloxiao.blogspot.com/2009/11/bad-quality-when-play-mov-by-quicktime.ht ml
    Thank you very much!

My first thought was a video card driver because that will produce the streaks across the screen but usually more extreme.
Then it could be hardware related, do you know the history of the computer, as to any recent changes?
I don't really have a solution and don't want to string you along. But I swap around hardware, and me, I'd pull the video card out and make sure it's seated properly in the AGP or PCI slot on the motherboard. If it's not a on-board video card.
You seem to be showing a dual monitor set-up? If so wouldn't the primary be on the right?

  • Exporting a movie on a G4 without quality loss

I do not have idvd on my PowerMac G4. Can someone explain how to export a movie without quality loss? I tried the various options in the dropdown menu but they seem to cause distortion.
    ~Thanks

Without quality loss ... what format did you start with? What format or delivery media do you need to output? If you're going to DVD-Video, there will be a quality loss due to the amount of compression needed.
You can output a QT movie (self-contained, using current settings, do NOT recompress!) that should be an exact duplicate of your sequence.
