Quality reduction when using QuickTime file

I imported a high quality QuickTime file to my FCP timeline, and the QT file's appearance -- both on the timeline and on the subsequent export of an mpg file -- degraded substantially. Smooth-edged circles became jagged. Sharp text became soft. The original QuickTime file looks marvelous, but when placed on FCP, it looks terrible. Anybody know why?

it all depends on your sequence settings? what are they? what is your original footage from? web? DVD? tape? if tape what kind? also what version of FCP are you using? am i reading your message right, you are outputting as MPEG-2?

When converting from a .wav to a .mov is there a loss of audio quality when using QuickTime?
That would depend on your work flow. MOV is the generic QuickTime file container and is not related to any particular data compression format. If you perform a simple "Save" or "Save As..." action that merely copies the data in the WAV file to an MOV file, then the data remains unchanged and maintains its original quality. If, on the other hand, your transcode/re-compress the original data to a different compression format, then there is always the potential for some loss in quality. Depending on the codec and/or settings, the potential loss could be inaudible to severe.

Have you tried trashing your preferences in FCP? Trashing FCP prefs is usually the first step when FCP is performing strangely.
Download Preference Manager from Digital Rebellion (free) at:

It will allow you to archive your current preferences if you wish to restore them later.

  • Error when using %@ include file="/test.jsp"%&

    UsingNitrox version 2.1 M3 (build 419 06022005):
with jdk version: 1.5.0_03 and Tomcat 5.5.9
This is the error  when using <%@ include file="/test.jsp"%> in jsp:
    Severity     2
The type java.lang.Object cannot be resolved. It is indirectly referenced from required .class files (test.jsp)
It used to work in previuos version of Nitrox. I can't use struts tiles because the tiles content is dynamic (run time) and I need it to be static (at compile time).
Have you encountered this problem? What is the fix? Nitrox bug?
    I need your help please,
    Alberto

    M7,
I found the problem  . In the java Build path having the default (ALL) is not picking up the content of the package. I had to use add multiple and include all the folders and subfolders (many L) in my packages. After that I added *.java and *.properties to select all the java files. Now it is working. I assume this is a bug in Nitrox. The default ALL should include the all the files in the path.
    Thanks,
    Alberto

  • Shuts down when using QuickTime (random)

    Need some help/ideas here...
My G5 Power PC dual 2.3 OS 10.5.8 shuts down (instant like pulling the plug) when using QuickTime 7.6.4 but its random... sometimes I can watch a couple hours worth sometimes it shuts down in 10 minutes.
Can software cause a a random instant shutdown?
My temps seem normal vs. others posted here (I cant see video card temp)
I think maybe its the Radeon 9650 (256) video card but I can use Aperture without shutdowns.
At first I thought it was the poor power in my old house (I did just move this computer upstairs) but it never shuts down with anything other than QuickTime.
Would there be something in a log to show me why its shutting down? how do I find the log and what do I look for?
Also I cant find the hardware test that came with my computer (lost when moving studios years ago) is there somewhere I can get a copy?
any ideas to help me identify and solve this issue would be helpful, I dont think it would be cost effective to take such an old computer to the Apple store but would like to get it working again as its plenty fast for home use CS3/Aperture/web/mail
    thank you
    Ray

Thank you very much, I looked at the console log but its beyond my understanding, there are 960 messages from 10/1/09 (fresh OS instal) to 1/6/10 and 85% of them are all from 1/4-1/6
after a few emails to the other 2 people that used this computer at my studio, it is sounding like they "upgraded" something so it could play DVIX or CODEC movies/clips??? I dont know what that means but I am ticked to say the least..... they like movies so much maybe I video them getting fired.
I am not 100% on the hardware but I am thinking its more likely software and will do erase and install, but anymore advice for tracking down the issue would be helpful.

  • Audio and video out of sync when using quicktime conversion

    hello,
i am editing a hdv project and want to export to quicktime. the client needs it in a specific size (700x394). they do not want the video in the file compressed, just the size of image. they are compressing the video through flash for the web. anyways, i used to just use quicktime conversion, custom size and use 700x394, but now when i do that the audio and video are sparadically out of sync in the product. the wierd thing is that the project plays fine in the timeline, but when i export the problem occours. i then, exported to a full res fcp movie and it is fine. then tired reexporting through qt pro to 700x394. when i did this their were no sync issues but the quality of the file was not so good, it look more pixely, certainly not as good as when i did it using quicktime conversion.
how can i export through fcp to get the 700x394 file? someone said 'use current settings' instead of using quicktime conversion? how do i do this? what do i need to do and what are my settings?
any help is appreciated. thanks a ton in advance.
    cheers,
    clay

What format are you converting the HDV to?
If it's animation, it is quite possible your computer can't pull the data rate. In this case it would be a processor / hard drive issue not an out of sync issue.

  • Quality Loss when transferring AVCHD File from Flash Card to iMovie

I have a Canon HF100 and the HD video looks great when I play directly from the video camera to the television. However, there is a loss in quality when I import to iMovie 08 and play the HD video on quicktime. How can I prevent the loss in quality so that playback on my iMac equals playback directly from the video camera to the TV?

First, be sure to import at "Full" 1920x1080.
Second, when you "Share", pick "Share"/Using Quicktime. This will let you customize settings. In Quicktime Settings, pick AIC with an unlimited data rate. For a smaller file, you can also try h.264 with an very high data rate.

  • IMovie 11 - Export Using Quicktime - File Disappears after Export......

    Hey everyone:
I've got a weird one here.  I've made my first project using iMovie.  I want to burn a DVD, so I clicked >>Share >> iDVD and it comes over fine.  I then setup a menu and stuff and burned it.  However, when I play it on my 52" plasma, it doesn't fit correctly.  It fills the screen, but it's almost like it's zoomed in so it cuts off of ALL edges.
So I did some research and found this post and went to try it out.  So within iMovie, I click "share using Quicktime" and change some of the various settings and export the movie as a Quicktime (.MOV) file to my "Movies" folder.  The movie is about 55 minutes, it says it'll take about 35 minutes to export.
35 minutes later I come back and the export box has closed, iMovie is still open, just like it should be, and the file I just exported is nowhere to be found.  It just disappears.  The second and third time I tried, I open a Finder window and watch the file get created, then get larger, and larger.  But once it's done, the file is gone.
So then I created a new project and made a movie that was only 10 minutes long.  It exports fine and the file is there when it's done.  In other words, I can't replicate the problem with a new project.  However, I have a lot of time in editing this movie and don't want to start over for fear of finding the same result.
    What should I do?
    Thanks!

I have this same problem and there are several threads running about it.  I have the paid-for version of iMovie, and cannot even get it to export a Quicktime movie.  This makes it even more useless than I already find it to be.  I spent the last two days working on a video, and for me to send it to my client, I would have to freight my computer to them so they could view it.

  • Final Cut Pro 5.1.4 crashes when using QuickTime conversion export

Our copy of Final Cut Pro 5.1.4 has started to crash when exporting using QuickTime Conversion. It gets about 66% complete, then dumps out. I have updated FCP using Software Update and QT to the latest version. Any ideas why this happening? Pro Kit 4.5 installed. QuickTime Pro 7.4.5
My previous post had the wrong version of FCP. Dyslexia sets in.

    Erik:
quite often during render I get the error messages "The specific file is in use by another application"
    Check this Apple doc:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302790
I think that was solved with 10.4.10.
About the crash problem, you would post the system configuration of that computer.
    Hope that helps !

  • When playing QuickTime file, I get sound but no picture

Someone provided me with some Quicktime files. Regardless of what program I use to play them, (iMovie 6, QuickTime Player, MPEG Streamclip) I get the sound but there is no picture. I'm thinking that maybe there is a codec that I don't have. I really need to get these files to work with iMovie 6. Any suggestions?

Thanks for the suggestion, Kirk. They sent me a sample 10-second file in H.264 and it works. I think the picture quality is diminished--not too bad, though. Which codec would have the best quality and still work in iMovie6? Keep in mind I will be editing the video and then exporting it to iDVD. Thanks.

  • Security issues when using the file adapter

I want to use the file adapter, and in the documentation it states that you can use "directories" and "ftp".
I want to transfer a file secure and both of these options are not really secure.
Directory reading is not really secure when you read files from a windows share (SMB protocol).
Is it possible to make a share more secure in a windows environment?
In an ftp session everybody can steal the password. Is there a possibility to use "sftp"? Or will this be available?

Currently we dont have, but we will have it soon.

Newest version Flash Player v 11.2.202.235 doesn't work when trying to view Flash video online, but does work when using the same Dreamweaver files locally?

Define "doesn't work" - what do you see instead of the expected Flash content?
Does that happen for any Flash object on the Internet, or only your Dreamweaver files?

  • Warning: NetGear ReadyNAS major bug when using AppleShare File Protocol

I own a large number of NetGear (formerly Infrant) NAS devices. After NetGear bought the company, they came out with a new version of the embedded OS of those devices that looks like it is mostly just a cosmetic update that changes the name Infrant to NetGear.
Unfortunately, it also introduces a very serious and reproducible bug. When you mount one of the NAS boxes running the new version of the OS under AppleShare, a file copied to the NAS box always gets today's date as its creation date. Strangely, if you copy a folder, the folder date is set correctly to the original creation date of the source folder, but the files contained inside of it lose their original creation dates.
This bug occurs ONLY under the new version of the OS (4.00), not under the previous version (3.01). It occurs both under OS X 10.4 and 10.5.
I have spent considerable time on hold and on the phone with NetGear technical support, and they claim this is a problem with the AFS file protocol. I don't know how they can make this claim when quite evidently everything works just fine under the previous version of their own software, but the gentleman on the phone basically told me something to the effect of "nobody uses AFS anyway, so why should we care".
If you are considering a NAS box, you may want to hold off on purchasing a NetGear device for the time being. And using Samba file sharing is not really an option either, because that severely limits your file naming possibilities.
If Apple is reading this, I hope someone can contact people "higher up" within NetGear to fix the problem.
    Michael

appreciate if someone can assist with my errors as mentioned in my first post.'
    Thanks.
