Queries on tape drive configuration

Dear All,
I have some queries on tape drive configuration We are on windows 2003 , oracle 10g  and ecc6 .
My requirements is to take backup on tape drive through brtools db13
Do that what need to be done at hardware and sap level means what tape device are there in market which support sap without buying any sap license
Please suggest in detail.
Regards,
Kumar

Hi,
If you are using only Tape device which is directly attached to your server locally, you won't need any license for that..
But if you are going to use any third party backup solution like "TIVOLI", then you may need purchase software and license if any..
Its depend on the software and the vendor...
Next thing, if your Tape device is locally attached to the server, you just need to install and configure device driver, so that your server operating system can recognized that hardware.
Then, you need to change the below parameters in "initSID.sap" profile which is under $ORACLE_HOME\dbs directory to take backup on tape.
backup_type = offline/online
backup_dev_type = tape
compress = hardware
archive_function = save_delete
rewind = "mt -f $ rewind"
rewind_offline = "mt -f $ offline"
tape_pos_cmd = "mt -f $ fsf $"
tape_size = 3600M (as per your tape size)
tape_address = /dev/nmt0
tape_address_rew = /dev/mt0
Leave the rest of the parameters as default.
You will be able to take backup using DB13 on tape.

    Hello Thiru,
    Once the backup completes,tape willl be automatically ejected.
    I dont think there is any way by means of which you can see the data stored in the disk but yes what you can do is to run the backup with verify option
    This BRBACKUP command option verifies the backup after the files have been backed up
    Please refer to following for more info.

  • Configure tape drive.

    Hi,
    What are the steps required for the database backups to be taken on tape drives ? Is rman sufficient for that?
    thanks..

    yes,legato is third party software.
    it includes a Media Management Library (MML).
    and to utilize tape storage for your database backups, RMAN requires a media manager. A media manager is a utility that loads, labels, and unloads sequential media such as tape drives for the purpose of backing up and recovering data.

    I have exactly the same problem after running an fsck to clear corrupt files.
    Is there a problem with mirrored disks and using boot -ar to rebuild path_to_inst?
    The basic problem is that the root filesystem is coming up as read only

  • Tape Drives set automatically to 1

    Hi all,
    After I set some configuration in the "Backup Settings", I found that "Tape Drives" filed is automatically filled with the value: "1". I tested the issue on may machines and the result was the same.
    Steps to generate the issue:
    1. Login to the Database Control EM as SYS
    2. Follow the following links:
    Maintenace Tab -> Backup Settings -> Backup Set
    3. Set "Maximum Backup Piece (File) Size" to 4 GB
    4. Click on "Policy" link
    5. Mark the checkbox "Automatically Backup Controlfile ..."
    6. Set "Retain backups that are necessary for a recovery .." to 2 Days
    7. Click on "OK" button
    Now the settings should be saved. Click again on "Backup Settings", you will see that "Tape Drives" field is filled with "1". By the way, NO tape is installed on the machine.
    This leads me to many problems. For example, trying to recover a tablespace failed because RMAN is creating channel of Tape type (although I sat Disk as the default channel)
    I hope to see any help on this issue here because it caused me many problems.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Tape drive  and pci-x card  with Solaris 10 on  VMWare environment

    I have a Sun X4170 server (x84_64) running VMWare ESXi 4.0. On it I have two VM guests- my production file server running Solaris 10 U7 and a test file server running Solaris 10 U9.
    The X4170 has a PCI-X LSI Logic dual external U320 parallel scsi card. I have a tape drive + auto loader cabled to the X4170. It is a Quantum branded autoloader but I believe the tape drive itself is HP. The autoloader+tape drive share a single SCSI ID (6) but have separate LUNS.
    I have two choices for making this system accessible to the OS:
    -     Virtualize the tape drive and loader individually.
    -     In VMWare, enable the scsi card as a pass through device. The SCSI card is then added as PCI device to the virtual machine (actually two devices since it is a dual scsi card.)
    I had virtualized a single-drive tape drives with Vmware in the past.
    However, when I tried I virtualize tape drive and loader, Solaris complained about the scsi id’s being invalid. I don’t think it likes two devices with a single scsi ID. Also, I think I need the backup software to see the REAL tape drive and autoloader (for inventory, changing tapes etc)

    Running “devfsadm –v “ does not change anything
    Any ideas? Maybe a need to update the MPT driver or is that dangerous?
    Thanks

    Actually, updating the kernel patches (and enabling hot plug service) did solve the problem. At some point during between testing the system before and after patching, the tape drive got turned off. Since the system patching was being done remotely it was not immediately obvious that the tape drive was off.

  • Can I use tape drive for backup with win 2012 OS & Sybase database?

    I have installed enhancement package 6 for SAP ERP 6.0 with OS windows 2012 and database sybase ASE(15.7.050). I am facing problem while taking database backup on tape drive. I want to know how to initialize tape drive in case of sybase DB and is it possible to take back-up on same. I failed to schedule backup from DB13 so now I am doing that activity by command line. So please help me to solve these issues.
    Here I am attaching some files related with backup commands that presently I am using. My SAP system ID is DQS.

    That output actually looks pretty good, it was dumping to the tape drive, it just ran out of tape because the drive apparently doesn't automatically detect when it is reaching the end.
    For the next step, try adding a CAPACITY parameter to your dump command as discussed at these places in the documentation.
    Specifying tape capacity for dump commands
    Set the Maximum Capacity for a Tape Drive
    Your output above shows it was able to dump 87565594 KB before it ran out of tape,
    so lets be a little conservative and try
    dump database DQS to TAPE1 with   capacity = 87000000, init
    go
    When the dump reaches that point, ASE should prompt you to pop in another new tape
    and then issue the sp_volchanged procedure from a second session (it will tell you what parameters to use for sp_volchanged).
    Note: once we get the dump working successfully, we can then create a logical dump device that would store the capacity value, and create a full dump configuration so you gain all the new functionality like dump history, etc.
    Enhancements to dump and load

  • Tape Drive Upgrade

    I'm running a SunFire v440 with a IBM 3584 tape library. Solaris 9 is the OS and Veritas NetBackup 5.1 is the App. Currently the IBM 3584 has LTO-2 drives in it and the backup team wants to upgrade to LTO-3 drives. They are planning on using the same WWN's thinking this will make the transition easier. I've never worked with tape drives before and need to know if this is valid.
    Also, to get the drives visable to Netbackup does anything have to be done at the OS level? I've reviewed the sg.conf file and don't see anything that stands out but my knowledge of this is limited.
    Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
    After changing the drives (if they are fiber native) the WWNs will change since each fiber device has a unique WWN like a MAC. (remember zoning on the fiber switch also needs to be done to accommodate the new hardware.)
    It is best to 1st unconfigure the old devices:
    cfgadm al will display the information you require to see where the drives bind to c(#)
    run cfgadm c unconfigure c(#) to remove the old tape drives from the configuration.
    Now run the clean-up devfsadm C
    Replace the drives with the LTO-3 units and zone the switch accordingly unless you use a switch that makes use of VSAN.
    Reboot tape library
    Run the configuration cfgadm c configure c(#) you might need to do a force update in some cases: cfgadm c configure o force_update c(#)
    List the devices cfgadm al
    If all is well up to this point you are set from the OS side.
    You will need to reconfigure the storage devices in Netbackup since the serial numbers of the drives are now different.
    Make sure you follow the guidelines for adding the correct values for LTO3 to the two files listed below to make sure your drives perform at their peak.
    /usr/openv/netbackup/db/config/NUMBER_DATA_BUFFERS
    /usr/openv/netbackup/db/config/SIZE_DATA_BUFFERS
    Hope this helps.

    Hi Folks,
    We have the following scenario:
    - SunFire v490 server
    - DAT 72 tape, SCSI
    - LTO4 tape, FC (via qlogic HBA)
    - Solaris 9 + updated patches
    We need some help regarding the FC tape configuration. *"cfgadm -al"* shows the FC tape as:

    /dev/rmt/1: No such device or addressWhat are we missing here?
    Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance,

    Hi,
    Thanks for your responses, after installing the suggested patch in single user mode, performing reconfiguration reboot did not help.
    The FC HBA is already configured and working, but qhe we try to reconfigure the drive it shows:
    root@host1 # cfgadm -c configure c4::500110a0008a18eb
    cfgadm: Library error: failed to create device node: 500110a0008a18eb: Invalid argumentAny help will be very appreciated,
