Query using Appends,  Lookups and Functions?

I'm new to SQL, databases and APEX! I'm sure this is very easy for you all, but I've been racking my brains for two days on this; time for the experts.
My very simple query is:
select first_name||' '||middle_name||' '||last_name "Full Name"
from name_table;
The problem I'm having, is each name above is in a foreign language (that I don't understand by the way!?), but I have a table that has "English" translations for each name...so my question is how to substitute my "translanted" value in each instance...
to translate the values, I need to do a:
select translated_name
from translated_table
where orginal_name = first_name (or middle_name, or even last_name)
and translation source = 'Dictionary' (there can be 3-4 or four translation sources for each name...)
It seems like a 'function' would be the best way to do this...after much googling, this is what I came up with (which obviously doesn't work!!!):
create or replace function TRANS_NAME (v_original in varchar2)
return varchar2
is
v_translated varchar2;
begin
select translated_name into v_translated
from translated_table
where original_name = v_original
and source='Dictionary'
return v_translated;
end;
I'm using the "APEX Object Browser" to create the function, for a couple reasons:
1. SQL Plus will not display the foreign language (just shows a buch of ??????????s), the APEX SQL tool shows the original language!
2. It gives immediate, if not cryptic, feedback on syntax errors.
FYI, I'm using Oracle 11g, on a Sun server running Solaris 10.
Appreciate any help you might be able to provide!

Is the combination (original_name, translation_source) unique? (That is, if several rows do have the same original_name, will they all have different translation_sources?)

If it produces an error, post the complete error message, including line number. Indicate if it's a comile or run-time error.
If it produces the wrong results, post the input, the relevant data from the table, and the correct results you need.
FYI, I'm using Oracle 11g, on a Sun server running Solaris 10.Thanks, that could be useful information.
It would also be useful to see a some sample data, and what you want to produce from that data.
A function is only one possible way. Joining to the translated_table is another. Each way has its advantages and disadvantages.
There's a separate forum for Oracle Application Express (APEX). If it looks like you'll need specific Apex features to solve this problem, post another question there. It's very rude to post the same question over and over, even in separate forums, so if you do post a question there, you should mark this one as "Answered".

  • Use of Procedure and Functions in ADF BC

    Hi,
    In ADF 11g
    1. can I use oracle function and procedures ( having in and OUT parameters) to expose as service interface
    2. if yes , How can this be done. and what are the allowed data types as input to procedure/function and can be returned by procedure/function
    3. How the transaction control will be achieved using ADF BC service interface.
    E.g. one ADF BC creates orders in order details and second creates Order lines in Order lines table. Now if order is created successfully but line creation fails then I want order to be rolled back also.
    Thanks.

    google it out.

  • How can I use the procedures and functions in my library

    hello, all
    I have a pl/sql library MYLIB.pld, MYLIB.pll and MYLIB.plx.
    How can I invoke procedures and functions there in JDeveloper?
    Thanks.
    Damon

    I am indeed using ADF BC to re-develop the oracle application.
    Here is my situation:
    We have an oracle form application.
    Our objective is to try to re-use the existing sources in the form application as much as possible:
    1. tons of procedures and functions in a pl/sql library(a file with extension name portfolioLib.pll or portfolioLib.plx);
    2. tons of form-level triggers, data-block triggers and item-triggers;
    3. tons of database stored procedures and triggers;
    After doing a research on JDeveloper, we decide to use ADF Swing+ADF BC to re-develop the application.
    My opinion for the above three kinds of sources in our form application is:
    for 1: we try to move most of procedures and functions into database(except Form build-in);
    for 2: we try to wrap those triggers in a SQLJ class;
    for 3: we try to call database procedures and functions with PreparedStatment or CallableStatement;
    I just do a test on a post-query trigger on a data-block:
    I created a sqlj file, named testSQLJ.sqlj in the test.view package;
    I tried to call it in createInstanceFromResultSet of testDeptVOImpl.java which is test.model package,
    I was told that testSQLJ cannot be found there. why?
    How can I call some classes from test.view package in some classes of test.model?
    I read some documents about how to deal with post-query trigger in JDeveloper: create a view with SQL statement, but it seems that it does not support pl/sql statement there.
    Can you give me some opinion about the above stuff?
    I really appreciate your help.

  • Cannot query using both conforming and cached query result

    TopLink doesn't allow me to both use conforming and cached query result at the same time.
    Conforming is certainly not a superset of the [cached query result] features.
    Can you confirm that it's a limitation of TopLink?
    Any know workaround to end-up with the same features as using both conforming and cached query result?
    Conforming is about seeing modifications you do in the same transaction. As a bonus, if you query for one object and specify at least the id as criteria because TopLink will have to check in memory anyway it can avoid going to the database.
    But if I do a query like "give me employees hired before now and after 30 days ago" it's about more than one objects and about finding existance so cached query result is needed to get acceptable performance in a complex application trying to avoid the same SQL generated over and over again.

    Thats where the trace just ends? It doesnt look like there's any LIKE or filtering going on (with respect to the Oracle pieces anyway), apparently MSAccess simply requested the whole table.
    What do you mean by 'hang' exactly? Are you sure it's just not taking a long time to complete? How long have you waited? How fast does it complete on the other environment?
    ODBC tracing isnt likely to help much for that. SQLNet tracing would be better to see what is going on at a lower level. Specifically, what is going on at the network level? Is the client waiting for a packet to be returned from the database?
    Is the database having a hard time processing the query, perhaps due to index/tuning issues?
    Assuming that is indeed the query that is "hung", how much data does that return?
    Are you able to reproduce the same behavior with that query and vbscript for example?

    Actually i need to do group by the aggragate values which i got the values from the fields of BILLABLE_YN,BILLABLE_TO,DETAIL_CLASS, COST_TYPE, BILL_RATE.
    where as in oracle i can run above query using decode keyword where as in sqlserver iam not able to use BILLABLE_YN field alias of above query in group by .
    i tried like by using following way but it is wrong because here iam not using aggragate values of fields in group by funtion please help me in converting query in sqlserver. GROUP BY (case BILLABLE_YN when 1 then 'Billable' when 0 then 'Non-Billable' else
    'Non-Billable' End BILLABLE_YN + ',' + BILLABLE_TO + ',' + DETAIL_CLASS + ',' + COST_TYPE + ',' + BILL_RATE)

  • SQL query using Group by and Aggregate function

    Hi All,
    I need your help in writing an SQL query to achieve the following.
    Scenario:
    I have table with 3 Columns. There are 3 possible values for col3 - Success, Failure & Error.
    Now I need a query which can give me the summary counts for distinct values of col3 for each GROUP BY of col1 and col2 values. When there are no values for col3 then it should return ZERO count.
    Example Data:
    Col1 Col2 Col3
    abc 01 success
    abc 02 success
    abc 01 success
    abc 01 Failure
    abc 01 Error
    abc 02 Failure
    abc 03 Error
    xyz 07 Failure
    Required Output:
    c1 c2 s_cnt F_cnt E_cnt (Heading)
    abc 01 2 1 1
    abc 02 1 1 0
    abc 03 0 0 1
    xyz 07 0 1 0
    s_cnt = Success count; F_cnt = Failure count; E_cnt = Error count
    Please note that the output should have 5 columns with col1, col2, group by (col1,col2)count(success), group by (col1,col2)count(failure), group by (col1,col2)count(error)
    and where ever there are NO ROWS then it should return ZERO.
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Shiva

    Thanks TTT. Unfortunately I cannot use this solution because I have huge data for this.T's solution is basically the same as mine. The first 23 lines just simulates your table. Since you actually have a table, you would start with T's line 24:
    SELECT col1 c1, col2 c2, SUM(decode(col3, 'success', 1, 0)) s_cnt, ...

    This site normally compresses spaces. Whenever you post formatted text (such as queries or results) on this site, type these 6 characters:
    \(small letters only, inside curly brackets) before and after each section of formatted text, to preserve spacing.
    Also, post exactly what you're using.  The code above is SELECTing col1 and col2, but there's no mention of either in the GROUP BY clause, so I don't believe it's really what you're using.
    Other than that, I don't see anything wrong or suspicious in the query.

    A patient is assigned an ednum. There are two different menus for staff to enter
    diagnoses. Each menu stores the entries in a different table. The two tables are substance and pdiagnose. A patient’s diagnosis for a substance abuse can be entered in one table and not the other.
    The number of entries for different substances for each patient can vary between the two tables. John Doe might be entered for alcohol and caffeine abuse in the pdiagnosis table and entered only for caffeine abuse in the substance table. They are only
    linked by the ednum which has nothing to do with the diagnosis/substance. The substance entered in one table is not linked to the substance entered in the other. A query will not put an entry for alcohol from the pdiagnosis table on the same row as an alcohol
    entry from the substance table except by chance. That is the reason for the way the query is written.
    The query accepts parameters for a Dr ID and a start and end date. It takes about 7 to 15 seconds to run. Hard coding the dates cuts it down to about a second.
    I might be able to select directly from the union all query instead of having it separate. But then I’m not sure about the order by clauses using aliases.
    Is there a way to rewrite the query to speed it up?
    I did not design the tables or come up with the process of entering diagnoses. It can’t be changed at this time.
    Please let me know if you notice any inconsistencies between the DDLs, data, and output. I did a lot of editing.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

  • How to execute our own Insert Query using EJB3.0 and Toplink

    Hi,
    This is my scenario. I want to insert master record and then detail record.
    Initially i followed this way
    UnitOfWork uow = getSessionFactory().acquireUnitOfWork();
    final EgovAgencyDetails egovAgency =
    (EgovAgencyDetails)uow.executeQuery("findAgencyRegistrationNo",
    EgovAgencyDetails.class, eGovPOMasterBean.getAgencyRegistrationNo());
    EgvoPaymentorderMaster po = (EgvoPaymentorderMaster)uow.newInstance
    (EgvoPaymentorderMaster.class);
    po.setSupplierName(-----);
    uow.commit();
    Then i inserted detail record. the same find the master record and then inserted detail record in the table.
    But if detail record fails means i want to rollback the master record.
    For that i followed below steps in my custom method in session facade,
    SQLCall sqlCall = new SQLCall("INSERT INTO EMPLOYEE (L_NAME) VALUES (#last_name)");
    UpdateObjectQuery query = new UpdateObjectQuery(myEmployee);
    query.setCall(sqlCall);
    query.addArgument("last_name"); // input
    query.bindAllParameters();
    Vector arguments = new Vector();
    arguments.add("MacDonald");
    uow.executeQuery(query, arguments);
    final EgvoPaymentorderMaster poMaster =
    (EgvoPaymentorderMaster)uow.executeQuery("findEgovPOID", EgvoPaymentorderMaster.class, eGovPOMasterBean.getPoNumber());
    EgovPaymentorderDetail poDetailInstance = (EgovPaymentorderDetail)uow.newInstance
    (EgovPaymentorderDetail.class);
    poMaster .addEgovPaymentorderDetail(poDetailInstance);
    Since if detail record failed means i want to rollback.
    I am getting this exception. Pleas kindly provide what changes i need to do.

    C,
    I don't use TopLink, but I suggest you set the "processEscapes" [Oracle database connection] property to "true", as described in the JDBC User's Guide and Reference.
    Oracle documentation can be accessed from here:

  • How to use two lookup in single interface in ODI 11g

    Hi All,
    I am trying to load GL_CODE_COMBINATIONS CC + FND_FLEX_VALUES_VL FF to target table W_GL_CODE_COMBINATIONS.
    I duplicated FND_FLEX_VALUES_VL as FND_FLEX_VALUES_VL1 FF1 for my join condition.
    In target table I have included 2 new columns named SEGMENT2_DESC and SEGMENT3_DESC.
    In my interface i am using FND_FLEX_VALUES_VL as lookup and join condition is CC.SEGMENT2=FF.FLEX_VALUE
    Mapping expression of target column SEGMENT2_DESC is FF.DESCRIPTION.
    In my interface i am using FND_FLEX_VALUES_VL1 as lookup and join condition is CC.SEGMENT3=FF1.FLEX_VALUE
    Mapping expression of target column SEGMENT3_DESC is FF1.DESCRIPTION.
    Execution of this interface taking more time. When using single lookup and SEGMENT2_DESC data loading is fast.
    Kindly advice me regarding this.
    Thanks in advance.

    Are the number of records in lookup very large ?
    Why cant you use the same lookup once and have the join containing both the conditions.
    YOu dont have to use lookup at all. YOu can also drag the "so called" lookup table in the source and build the join conditions yourself.
    The join condition would be
    CC.SEGMENT2=FF.FLEX_VALUE and CC.SEGMENT3=FF.FLEX_VALUE

    Progressive relaxation works best when you're only selecting a limited number of rows. If you fetch ALL the rows which satisfy the query, then all the steps in the relaxation will have to run regardless.
    If you fetch - say - the first 10 results, then if the first step of the relaxation provides 10 results then there is no need to execute the next step (in fact, due to internal buffering, that won't be exactly true but it's conceptually correct).
    The simplest way to do this is reword the query as
    SELECT * FROM (
    ( SELECT SCORE(1) score,t.* FROM test_sh4 t WHERE CONTAINS (text3, '
    <query>
    <textquery>
    </textquery>
    <score datatype="FLOAT" algorithm="default"/>
    </query>',1) >0 ORDER BY score(1) DESC
    WHERE ROWNUM <= 10
    You've discovered that leading wild cards don't work too well unless you use SUBSTRING_INDEX. I would encourage you to avoid them altogether if possible, or push them down much lower in the progressive relaxation. Usually, GIFT% is a useful expression (matches GIFTS, GIFTED, etc), %GIFT% is generally no more effective.
    There are a lot of steps in your progressive relaxation. It you wanted to reduce the number of steps, you could change:
    <seq>((%GIFT% and %GRILL% and %STAPLES% and %CARD%)) within text1</seq>
    <seq>((%GIFT% and %GRILL% and %STAPLES% and %CARD%)) within text2</seq>
    to
    <seq>((%GIFT% and %GRILL% and %STAPLES% and %CARD%)*2) within text1 ACCUM ((%GIFT% and %GRILL% and %STAPLES% and %CARD%)) within text2</seq>
    I don't know if this would have any performance benefits - but it's worth trying it to see.

  • Conditions on a Query using Nav. Attr. (quick reply is very appreciated).

    Hi experts,
    I have a problem here with a query using both conditions and navigation attributes.
    The problem is as follow:
    I created a query with ZPRDGRP (product group), ZPRDTYPE (product type), ZPRDVAR (product variant) and 0MATERIAL (material), 0EXTMATLGRP (external material group) on the row side.
    On the column side, I have several restricted Key Figures:
    PriceA, PriceB and Quantity.
    The 0EXTMATLGRP is a <u>navigation attribute</u> of the 0MATERIAL.
    I created a conditions whereby I only want to see the materials with PriceA=0.
    But everytime I tried to run the query on the web, I always get this error message:
    "Termination message sent
    ABEND RSBOLAP (000): Program error in class SAPMSSY1 method : UNCAUGHT_EXCEPTION
      MSGV1: SAPMSSY1
      MSGV3: UNCAUGHT_EXCEPTION"
    The error message always occurs everytime I include the 0EXTMATGRP on my rows. If I remove this, then my query will work fine. But I need to include this 0EXTMATGRP on my query.
    Furthermore, this error message just occurs if I run the query on the web, but if I just run it on the analyzer, then it also just work totally fine.
    Has anyone encounter this problem before? Is this a bug? How to solve this problem?
    Thank you a lot in advance!
    Fen.

    Hi all, I have found a solution for this one.
    I think it should be a bug, since if I included the Product Size characteristics in it (even though I hide it), then the query will work fine.

  • Crystal Reports with BEx Query using Custom Exit Variable

    Hi,
    We have BW BEx Query using Customer User Exit variable to derive  the Fiscal Week for Last Year (called it VAR2) based on another user input variable Current Fiscal Week (called it VAR1).
    VAR2 is derived from VAR1 in CMOD via some codings and thus it DOES NOT have the "Variable is Ready for Input" flag ticked in the BEx. VAR1 is user input variable, so it has "Variable is Ready for Input" flag ticked in the BEx.
    When we create a Crystal Reports with the BEx Query using variable VAR2, and when we run it we got an error message saying "Failed to execute query; '[]<java.lang.UnsupportedOperationException: No Selection State Support!ZP_MI_LYPUBWEEK>'. Redesign your query or contact the data source maintainer to solve the problem".  (note: ZP_MI_LYPUBWEEK is VAR2 in this case).
    Could anyone please assist? Surely, CR supports BEx customer user exit variables like the above, right?. I also refer to the forum below as it seems to have a similar issue (except mine with an error message), but it does not provide a solution in it.

    Hi Vibhav,
    We have the SAP Crystal Reports for Enterprise XI4.0 Version 14.0.0. Not sure if SP0 or other SP, got to check with Basis Team later.
    We tried that "mandatory" option and did not work either.
    Anyway, SAP has now come back again saying it is something they will fix it in next release/version. We got a phone call from them and a reply below to our OSS.

    Generally, COL_VENDOR, COL_PREFIX , COL_STATE , COL_COUTRY field values exist in the T_KEY_VALUES table.
    So How can I use T_KEY_VALUES as Lookup and write the one SQL query to get the data like below:
    1, AMC , MOVIES , 100001 , CA ,USA
    2, REGAL , MALLS , 100002 , NY , USA

    Hi,
    One way is to join t_transactions to 4 copies of t_key_values:
    SELECT  t.version_id
    ,       v.value           AS vendor
    ,       p.value           AS prefix
    ,       t.col_reciptid
    ,       s.value           AS state
    ,       c.value           AS country
    FROM    t_transactions  t
    JOIN    t_key_values    v  ON  v.key_id  = t.col_vendor
    JOIN    t_key_values    p  ON  p.key_id  = t.col_prefix
    JOIN    t_key_values    s  ON  s.key_id  = t.col_state     -- or col_sate
    JOIN    t_key_values    c  ON  c.key_id  = t.col_country
    If you'd care to post CREATE TABLE and INSERT statements for the sample data, then I could test this.
    The query above assumes all 4 coded columns in t_transactions have matching values in t_key_values, as they do in the sample data.  If that assumption is wrong, then use outer joins in some (or all) of the places where I used inner joins above.
    Another approach is to UNPIVOT t_transactions into 4 times as many rows, do a single join to t_key_values, and then PIVOT those results back to the original number of rows.

  • Use COUNT or MAX functions inside of a query, and you have no data found

    I'm writing a query with a COUNT and a MAX function.
        SELECT  li.id
                 , MAX(m.display_date)
                , COUNT(*)
         FROM li JOIN m  ON (m.LIID=li.LIID)
        WHERE m.DISPLAY_DATE < SYSDATE - 7
        GROUP BY  li.id;I would like to write a query that returns always a row foe each row in the table li.
    If there are no records with the condition "WHERE m.DISPLAY_DATE < SYSDATE - 7", I would like to have a row with
    - COUNT(*) = 0
    - MAX(m.display_date) = TO_DATE('2010-06-08', 'YYYY-MM-DD'
