Question about creating an SQL search

Hi, In the app I am developing the user can search one of my database tables by one or more of three fields. If a field is left blank is there anyway to set up an SQL statement so that a dummy search criteria is entered for that field? That probably isn't very clear, here example:
I have 3 fields: ID, Surname and Forname. Currently in my app code I am checking whether fields are empty, or if two are empty and one isn't etc, before constructing the appropriate SQL statement with the fields that are not empty. What I am after is something like this, so I can just have one SQL statement that can handle one or more of the fields being empty, for example if the ID and Forname search fields have something in them, but the Surname field is empty:
Select * from employees where ID = 2 AND Surname = 'ANY' AND Forname = 'Smith'
Thanks

Ushitaki,
Yes, that's a good point you are raising here. The NVL always evaluates both expressions and results in a full table scan.
However, your variant might be "evil" as well since you are also using one query to handle two situations: one where you'd want a index scan because a value was given and one where you'd want a full table scan because the user did not provide a value.
So if performance is a problem here, the best option probably is to dynamically construct the query, using binds, but have several different queries populating the library cache, each with its own optimal plan.

Rob.

  • A question about creating packages as local objects in ABAP

    Hi,
    I have a question about creating packages with SE80. Whenever I create a new package it is assigned a new transport request. After that, I can create new programs inside this package, and each time I can choose whether to assign the new program to a transport request or just save it as a local object (I often do this for test programs that I don't transport and I remove them once my tests have been done).
    What I would like to ask is that, is it possible to create a package (and not just programs inside a given package) as a local object? so that every new object created in this package will be considered as a local object?
    Thanks in advane,
    Kind Regards,
    Dariyoosh

    Thomas Zloch wrote:
    Please also check the F1 help for the package field e.g. in SE80, SAP standard is in range A-S and U-X, namespaces start with "/", so you should be save. I am using the T namespace for temporary stuff since a long time and did not have a problem so far.

    Thank you very much for this remark, I checked F1 help for the package field and in fact as you mentioned these ranges are for local objects.
    Once again, thank you very much for your help.

  • Question about creating new tables using SQL script in WebLogic Server

    Hi,
    I am new to WebLogic and I am following a book Java EE Development with Eclipse published by PACKT Publishing to learn
    Java EE.  I have installed Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse on the PC and I am able to log into the WebLogic Server Administration Console
    and set up a Data Source.  However the next step is to create tables for the database.  The book says that the tables can be created using
    SQL script run from the SQL command line.
    I cannot see any way of inputting SQL script into the WebLogic Server Admistration Console.  Aslo there is no SQL Command line in DOS.
    Thanks  for your help.
    Brian.

    Sounds like you are to run the scripts provided by a tutorial to create the tables, right?  In that case, you may need to install an Oracle client to connect to your database.  The client is automatically installed with the database, so if you have access to the server that hosts the database, you should be able to run SQLplus from there.
    As far as I know, there is no way to run a script from the Admin Console.  I could be wrong, however.

  • A question about creating READ ONLY users.

    Dear all,
    I have a question about read only user accounts and I would appreciate if you could kindly give me a hand. I have a schema named SCHEMA1. Whenever I want to connect by using sqlplus I run the following:
    sqlplus user1/[email protected] SCHEMA1.WORLD is the entry in the tnsnames.ora referring to the schema SCHEMA1.
    I need to create a read only user who is able to SELECT all tables and views created by user1 on SCHEMA1 (this user will not modifiy anything at all. The user is used only for a person using SQL queries to read data). for several tables I write the grants explicitly, for example:
    CREATE USER user2 IDENTIFIED BY user2;
    GRANT CREATE SESSION to user2;
    GRANT SELECT ON S001_COR_ECLASS TO user2;
    GRANT SELECT ON REF_ECLASS511 TO user2;Is there anyway to do the same thing but for all the tables (because there are a lot of tables and views)? Besides, even with these granted permissions when the user connects with SQL Developer to the database, he is not able to view the list of tables/views in SQL Developer GUI. What causes this problem?
    Thanks in advance,
    Dariyoosh

    Hello Dariyoosh,
    he is not able to view the list of tables/views in SQL Developer GUIyou can either go to "Other Users" - user1 - tables. There you see every table you have permission to select.
    Or you can create a synonym in schema2 for each table in schema1 and set a filter on the tables node of user2 "Include synonyms".

  • Question about inserting Sysdate (SQL)

    Hi all,
    I got a question about records insert when one of the fields is sysdate.
    I have to store several records representing a log, generated by the execution of a database package.
    Inside my package I wrote an internal procedure devoted to insert a record in my log table for each processing step I wanted to trace (I call this proc each time I want to record a certain step of my package).
    My log table structure is: PREC_LOGS(log_date DATE, log_message VARCHAR2(1000)), no constraints at all.
    Database ver. 8.1.7.1.0 - Production for VMS O.S.
    The 'problem' occurs when several records have the same sysdate (DD-MM-YYYY HH24:MI:SS). In this case, if I select log_date,log_message ... order by log_date, the list of records I get respects the sort condition, but when several records have the same sysdate (DD-MM-YYYY HH24:MI:SS), it doesn't respect the order of the steps theoretically inserted by the internal proc.

    Hi
    Add a field to the table that is that uses a sequence
    PREC_LOGS(log_id NUMBER(30),log_date DATE, log_message VARCHAR2(1000))
    Create a database sequence
    The insert statement now becomes something like
    INSERT INTO PREC_LOCS(log_id, log_date, log_message)
    VALUES (sequence_name.NEXTVAL, SYSDATE, 'Some message');
    Then order by the log_id when you do your select.

    Hi,
    You have to use the admin account to add the admin role to the developer account. Can you please try this and let me know of your feedback.
    The settings you added look good, and the you have the latest version of Sql DEVELOPER     , ...so this should be an issue.
    Maybe you have some firewall setting on your computer, that are blocking the connection?
    If , after checking all of the above you still have an issue, please contact oracle support via the chat on the cloud.oracle.com and ask the engineer to open a Service Request under your name.
    Thanks,

  • Question about setting conditions in searches using SQL

    I am trying to search through a table where the "Score" column hs to be in between two numbers.
    Table Test:
    Name: #
    Tom 40
    Tom 60
    Tom 50
    joe 60
    If i were to search for "Tom" nomally i get all 3 back. Regardless of the code for SQL(assume it works) will the search display only Tom 40 and Tom 50 is i want between 40 and 60? In other words if the condition field has a valid sql expression that works do i need to write anything to display the data in SQl or it will be fixed automatically?

    SQL> select * from test;
    NAME SCORE
    Tom 40
    Tom 60
    Tom 50
    Joe 60
    SQL> select * from test
    2 where name = 'Tom';
    NAME SCORE
    Tom 40
    Tom 60
    Tom 50
    SQL> select * from test
    2 where score between 40 and 60;
    NAME SCORE
    Tom 40
    Tom 60
    Tom 50
    Joe 60
    When you use the 'between' operator the search for score includes both 40 and 60. In case of this example, if you were to display only Tom's scores of 40 and 50, you should use the following select statement.
    Select * from test
    where score >= 40
    and score < 60;
    SQL> Select * from test
    2 where score >= 40
    3 and score < 60;
    NAME SCORE
    Tom 40
    Tom 50

  • Questions about creating a foreign key on a large table

    Hello @ll,
    during a database update I lost a foreign key between two tables. The tables are called werteart and werteartarchiv_pt. Because of its size, werteartarchiv_pt is a partitioned table. The missing foreign key was a constraint on table werteartarchiv_pt referencing werteart.
    Some statistics about the sizes of the mentioned tables:
    werteart 22 MB
    werteartarchiv_pt 223 GB
    werteartarchiv_pt (Index) 243 GB
    I tried to create the foreign key again, but it failed with the following error (Excuses for the german error message):
    sqlplus ORA-00604: Fehler auf rekursiver SQL-Ebene 1
    sqlplus ORA-01652: Temp-Segment kann nicht um 128 in Tablespace TEMPS00 erweitert
    The statement I used:
    alter table werteartarchiv_pt
    add constraint werteartarchiv_pt_fk1
    foreign key (schiene, werteartadresse, merkmale)
    references werteart (schiene, werteartadresse, merkmale)
    on delete cascade
    initially deferred deferrable;
    So the problem seems to be, that Oracle needs a lot of temporary tablespace to generate the foreign key and I do not know how much and why.
    My questions now are, and hopefully someone is here, who can answer all or a part of it:
    1) Why does Oracle need temporary tablespace to create the foreign key? The foreign key uses the same columns like the primary key.
    2a) Is it possible to tweak the statement without using the temporary tablespace?
    2b) If it is not possible to avoid the usage of the temporary tablespace, is there a formula how to calculate the needed temporary tablespace?
    3) Is it possible to modify data in the tables while the foreign key is created or is the whole table locked during the process?
    Any help or hint is appreciated.
    Regards,
    Bjoern

The foreign key uses the same columns like the primary key.Because it's validating the data to ensure the foreign key won't be violated. If you had specified ENABLE NOVALIDATE when creating it then the existing data in the table wouldn't need to be checked and the statement should complete instantly (future data added would be checked by the constraint).

  • Very Nube Question About Creating a Very Basic Application Bundle / Package

    I don't know anything about XCode or AppleScript, other than that they exist, so I'm coming at this with only conceptual knowledge of how applications on OS-X work. Nonetheless, I have a goal that I feel should be really easy to accomplish, I just don't know where to begin.
    What I have is an html file with an embedded flash project that also references some outside files, such as pdfs for printing. This was designed to live on the web, but in reality it will be shipped out on a CD. Right now, if you insert the cd, you see the file contents (the above mentioned HTML file, as well as two folders containing the flash files and the pdfs that are embedded in or linked out from the html file).
    This isn't very elegant, and doesn't accomplish the "app" feel I'm shooting for. What I'm wondering is: is there a way to create an application package that has the html file and content folders tucked inside of it, so that when a user clicks on the application package, the html file is automatically launched? What resources might you point me to in order to learn how to do this in a relatively short amount of time? (I'm not even positive if I'm using the correct terminology to search for solutions... is it an application package or an application bundle?)
    Now for the limitations:
    These files were generated on a Windows machine by an eLearning tool ("Articulate Presenter") and therefore really can't be fiddled with much. I can't open any of the flash files and change the directory paths for the resource files the main presentation needs. I'm fairly confident the presentation just refers to the folder the html file is in as its root, so if the file structure could stay relatively intact once all the files move inside this "bundle," I think everything will still work.
    The Articulate Presenter folks aren't particularly helpful in solving Mac compatibility issues, so I thought I'd pose my question here. If I'm not being clear, I am happy to add additional details. Thanks very much for your patience with, and willingness to offer advice to, a complete newbie.
    Cheers!

    It's even easier than you think.
    Open AppleScript Editor.
    Type in the following code:
    set htmlFile to (POSIX path of (path to me)) & "Contents/Resources/index.html"
    set openCommand to "open " & quoted form of htmlFile
    do shell script openCommand
    Then do File > Save, and use 'Application' as the file format.
    Then the "Bundle Contents" button on the toolbar will be enabled. Click it to open up the drawer.
    Drag your HTML content and resources into the drawer.
    Do File > Save again. Ta-da, you have your web-content packaged as an application.
    This assumes that the top-level has a file named index.html. If not, modify to suit.

  • Question about creating and updating new columns in a table

    Hi, I have a couple of questions that would love some answers to
    Please bear in min that questions relate to datawarehouse / Just large tables with say about 50 million records
    1) How do you create new columns in a big table
    2) how do you update the new columns
    3) would you create an index on a column in a table with 200m rows when the only two possible values are stored in the column (e.g.Y, N) - give your resason
    my aswers to these would be
    1) simple alter table ...
    2) simple update statements
    3) No need to create an index
    I might be wrong on these in the context of datawarehouse
    cheers
    css_jay99

    If the number of Y vs. N is about 50/50, you only have to parse through 50% of the
    overall amount of columns.Fnord. If the ratio of Y to N was 1:20 then the index would be useful for searching for values of Y only. Or if the column is nullable and the bulk of the entries were null then it might be useful. But a 50/50 split? FTS is much more effective.
    So, it does depend on the data distribution, but in most cases such an index would never be used (or should never be used).
    Cheers, APC

    You are to implement a class called Stack using arrays as internal storage mechanisms . Note well, you cannot use the java Stack class. You are to implement the following instance methods (interfaces are provided below)....etc

    It sounds to me as if you need to understand the nature of a stack before you go about implementing it. Use http://www.google.com and search for "stack data structure java". There are a number of good references available there.

  • A question about CREATE PUBLIC DATABASE LINK and ORA-12154 error

    You must have defined DGPAPROD.WORLD in tnsnames.oar on server where you DB is runnig.Hello there,
    Thanks a lot for this nice solution. In fact I had to add the connection parameters into the tnsnames.ora file of the server on which the link was created (not the tnsnames.ora of my oracle client stored on the localhost)
    After a bit googling I found another solution that allows to create the database link:
    CREATE PUBLIC DATABASE LINK SR001_dblink CONNECT TO user IDENTIFIED BY password USING '(DESCRIPTION =  (ADDRESS_LIST =  (ADDRESS = (COMMUNITY=tcp.world)
    (PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=ip_adresse)(PORT=1521)))(CONNECT_DATA = (SID = GPAPROD)))';Thanks a lot for your help!

  • Question about SUM in SQL query

    I have a SQL ststement which is listed below along with it's output.
    For the NUM_REQ column, I am expecting to get the number 832 because the pm_requirements_table contains 16 records and they all have a frequency of WEEKLY.
    16 * 52 = 832. The query returns 12480 which I can see that it is multiplying the 832 by 15 which is the number of entries in the lpm table 16 * 52 * 15 = 12480.
    I need the lpm table in there for other reasons, so my question is how can I get it to return 832 and still have the lpm table as part of the query.
    Thanks,
    George

    As part of my research, I have been looking at this doc:
    Oracle® Application Framework
    Personalization Guide
    Release 11i
    Part No. B25439-02
    From:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B25516_18/current/acrobat/115fwkpg.pdf
    The document does not seem to go into much detail about how to Insert an item on a page. I also checked the "OA Component Reference" document.
    I checked the online help via "Create Item Page" - e.g.
    http://oursite/pls/PSAT/fndgfm/fnd_help.get/US/FND/CUST_PERSADMIN_CREATEITEM.HTM
    Again, that doesn't give a lot of information.
    As part of my testing / research, I would like to add a new Item to a page, and have the value of the item to be taken from an existing SQL Query.
    For example, in iProcurement, when viewing a Requisition Details, e.g. via this page:
    http://oursite/OA_HTML/OA.jsp?page=/oracle/apps/icx/por/reqmgmt/webui/ReqDetailsPG&reqHeaderId={!!BX6R96mkQOcfNZ60BeTaJQ}&retainAM=Y&addBreadCrumb=Y&_ti=245778094&PersonalizationParam=PersonalizationParamAdmin&oapc=12&oas=mYF7zP1VI7xoAWcUQHTEkQ..
    I would like to add in the "NOTE_TO_AUTHORIZER" field from the "po.po_requisition_headers_all" table.
    From looking at the "About this Page" link, I can see there is a View Object called "oracle.apps.icx.por.reqmgmt.server.ReqHeaderVO".
    This ViewObject contains an Attribute called "NoteToAuthorizer" with a Type of "java.lang.String".
    When I go to the "Create Item" page, and choose and Item Style of "Message Styled Text" there seems to be no way to say which database field you want to include.
    From looking at a previous customisation that a developer did, I can see you can pull in an Attribute via the "View Attribute" field, and link in the VO via the "View Instance" field.
    When inserting database values into a Self-Service page, can we only insert Attributes, and not any of the other regular fields from View Objects?
    Apologies for the rambling essay.
    Any advice much appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi Jimr,
    In OAF sql queries are represented by View Objects and columns of query will be represented by View Attribute.
    For every column in query there will be corresponding view attribute name, so while adding any item on self service page which represents data from database you need to specify view instance name and view attribute name, which will specify which column and from which query it will show the data.
    *"When I go to the "Create Item" page, I can't work out how to tell Oracle that the Item I want to create should be the "NoteToAuthorizer" field from the "ReqHeaderVO" ViewObject."* so ReqHeaderVO1 will be the instance(by default OAF generates instance like this) and "NoteToAuthorizer" can be mentioned in View Attribute name property.
    Let me know if you need further clarification.

  • Question about Creating DataSources for FlatFile Data Acquisition

    Hello eveyone,
    I am trying to create flatfile datasources.  I've been checking out the existing ds in my dev system and there are some infrastructure here that have loaded data in them, all via their won flatfile DS.  I've been looking at the DS and am trying to figure out logic in which they are defined. I saw that most of the fields are defined in CHAR even if they pertain to fields like quantity, Amount and so on...  They are also in the Internal format.  Yet they have been successfully loaded...
    My question is:  what are the rules of thumb in defining the DS?  How do i go about in mapping the fields to objects in the system?  Can anyone please give me the step-by-step scenario as to how to do this please?
    Many thanks,
    Philips

    Hi Philip,
    Pls. try the following steps ..may be helpful.
    1. when ever you want to create a flat file structure..keep in mind that, what are
        fields data available in your file. second thing is you need to know the IO of
        the info provider in which you are uploading.
    2. simply create your own DS with PC File, and other hand open up your infprovider, and keep on check with your flat file what is the sequence of the data
    fields and what are they corresponds to in the cube/ODS
    3. As your flat file sequence, keep on identify the related IO of your provider and
    copy it individual and paste it in your infosouce one by one as sequence of your
    flat file..
    4. No need to think of what type of data it is and how it is..
    5. simply copy all your correponding IO (what ever of their type) even including
        some of the ref. IO.
    6. And finally save and activate your DS creation.
    I hope it would help in creating your own Flat File DS.
    Need further info revert...
    Cheers,
    Thanks=Points.
