Question about netbeans platform

I've been sifting through tutorials and the like for a few hours now and I still can't get a straight answer. I'm developing a module suit which uses the netbeans platform (my first Java endeavor). I'm working in Netbeans 5.0. I've made all my classes and forms and stuff. My question is this: how the heck to I get a form/panel to load when the application starts up? When I run the application I only get the platform without my panels and forms. What's the cleanest way to do this?

Hehe, thanks for the advice. Yeah I wasn't saying
that this should or shouldn't be a forum based on
netbeans or Eclipse. It's actually a little
refreshing to find a forum that is devoted to the
language instead of the IDE. at the moment, it's pretty much devoted to doing peoples homework for them and generally wiping their @rses for them, hence the frosty reception you got above! don't take it to heart!
Not really sure why my company wanted NetBeans and
not Eclipse, but oh well.probably an assumption that since Sun wrote it, it must work better with Java. or they've heard some of the horror stories about how buggy Eclipse is. I haven't used Netbeans so I can't really comment, but buggy though Eclipse is, I still like it, both as an IDE and a platform

  • Beginner question about NetBeans

I am new to java, which is why I am posting on this forum. I have been messing around with the NetBeans IDE and have made a couple GUI's now. First question is how do I have the window change. For example, if the application opened up and it showed a menu with a couple different buttons you could click to do different things, how would I make it so when you clicked a button the window changed into what was supposed to be on the screen next. Say one of the options was "Calculator", how would I make the window become a calculator after it was clicked? Do I make a new JFrame with the all the calculator stuff? If so, how do I "connect" the two of them? I want it to appear in the same window, not open a new one. My second question was how do I make it so my applications can be run from the desktop without having to build from within NetBeans?
It was a little difficult to explain what I was asking, but any help is appreciated. I am assuming that what I'm trying to do is pretty basic, sorry I'm newbie.

Probably one of the more common ways is to use a CardLayout to swap JPanels, but other options including popping up a JDialog, using JTabbedPanes, hiding a JFrame and showing another, ... exist.

Now I need to get on my soap box and discuss another issue that you've not asked about. First off, Java is not like Visual Basic, C#, or other .NET languages (assuming you may be familiar with the MS Visual Studio) in that our programs are not first and foremost GUI's with code tacked on. There's a lot to learn when starting to code in Java, enough that adding Java GUI coding may be a bit overwhelming at the start. I'm going to recommend that you put the GUI stuff to the side for a bit, study the basics of Java, and then later when you're comfortable with the rudiments of Java, start learning Swing coding but without NetBeans code generation. If you learn it through the Sun tutorials, Swing will make a whole lot more sense and even using NetBeans to generate some Swing code will be easier for you. Regardless what you do, best of luck!

  • Where is the best place to ask questions about NetBeans 6 for Java?

When it comes to Java discussions, all I can think is this forum, but what about Java Desktop Applications using NetBeans IDE 6?
    Question/Query 1:
I just like to ask how I can make the Database Application Template under the Java> Java Desktop Application> Database Application:
Well, the the nice Frame with prebuilt components are good, but how can we customize the Window Icon? Has anybody in this forum and particularly Netbeans 6 users encountered the same scenario?
    Question/Query 2:
How can I make a splash page with such a Database Application template too?

  • NetBean Questions about Features

2nd Is there a way to display white spaces? so you can see what has been whitespaced or not
3rd is there a way to make it so when you put a bracket in it puts right away the closeing bracket in?
4th is there a way to have like the area where it complies to auto hide itself till I hit complie then it pops up(Since if there was a feature or something close to it would give me some more working space).
Thats all the questions I got for now

These are all questions that can best be answered by experimentation and reading the built-in help, especially since you don't say what NB version you're using.
    However, for NB 5.0:

  • Questions about Access Manager tutorials available in netbeans site

    Hi
Thank you for reading my post
I have some questions about two tutoral which i find in :
    http://www.netbeans.org/kb/55/amsecurity.html and
    http://www.netbeans.org/kb/55/amsecurity-liberty.html
    here is my problem :
we have some web services, now we want to have authentication applied for consumer who try to access our web services.
we need to have most possible flexibility because we may deploy the server for a customer with an already established Identity database ( Database Table with user details)
Also we need to have Transport level security using SSL.
I read and studied both of them and now i have some questions :
-I think Securing Web Services Using the SAML or UserNameToken is what we need for authentication and autorization of web service consumers?
    is that right?
-Does Sun Java System Access Manager provide flexibility to authenticate user/password with a database table content?
-How we can apply roles in Sun Java System Access Manager when we authenticate users ?
    Thanks

Imagine that we want to have an end to end security for our web services
we thought that we could use message level encryption to protect the soap message and also we should protect our web services from un-authenticated acess,
we will use userName token for this.
Our customer has large database which contains many user/password and role of those users.
some of web services should be available to higher role (manager) and not for all users.
so we should check a user role before we allows him/her to access a web service.
my question is whether Sun Access manager can help us with this? or there are other configuration or packages that we should apply to have this feature.
    to explain more :
our client side is a swing application, users enter username/password to login into system. after they loged in, we send user/pass every time user want to request some data from some services. (is it good to send user/pass every time?)
We want Sun Access Manager to handle users authentication .
We also need to handle role related authorization, can Sun access manager handle this?
    Thanks

  • Slowness of Netbeans Platform Apps - how to mitigate?

    Hi,
We are developing a commerical application (pretty complex) in java using Netbeans IDE. We have 2 options in netbeans to create it-
    1. Develop Java desktop app
    2. Netbeans Platform app
We have requirement that application startup and response times should be very very fast, should be modular etc. We did Proof of Technology by creating apps using both approaches mentioned above. We found Netbeans platform apps are very slow during startup and during screen navigation compared to pure Swing based desktop apps. We tried to implement suggestions provided at http://wiki.netbeans.org/Category:Performance:FAQ and in other blogs and forums to improve on speed of the app but were not successful.
We feel for creating a complex desktop app Netbeans platform app would be better suited, but its not meeting our performance requirements (startup and response times, memory footprints, CPU usage guidelines etc).
Can any one guide us on how to mitigate our problem of improving performance of Netbeans Platforms apps?
Thanks in advance for your help..
    - bhan

This question really belongs in a Netbeans forum for any serious answers. That being said I can still give my opinion.
I really doubt that you can improve it through software. Netbeans has to initialize and validate a complex module system during startup and the more modules that have to be started, to more time it will take. Recently OSGi support was added to Netbeans as an alternative to Netbeans' native module system; perhaps that can help, but again I doubt it.
Let me put it in another way: I was following the 10 example videos that demonstrate how to use the Netbeans platform, and even the small test applications that were developed took several seconds to boot. It is one of the arguments I have for myself to not adopt the platform myself - not that I care about the startup time of the end product, but because I already predict high annoyance levels during development.

  • Swing, Netbeans Platform or what else?

    Hi,
I have this question. Is there an alternative to Swing? I started to learn Swing, but it seems a bit ackward to me, are there any other GUI libraries? I know of the Netbeans Platform, but I don't understand what's it about yet.
    I'll appreciate your help, thanks.

Powerful, yet sort of out of reach. Sorry, I don't really know what that means.
I don't know, perhaps it's just a first impression.Yeah, probably. You can't expect to just "get" something as soon as you look at it. Understanding Swing will take weeks (or months, or even years).
I think this might be what I was "affraid" of. Perhaps I didn't expect it to be that large and complex. But I am new to Java and I don't have any comparison.
I also read that Swing will not be developed any longer.Where did you read this? It is simply not true (err.. I hope).I'm quite sure I saw this somewhere on the Netbeans website or within the Netbeans IDE 6.9.1.

So I wonder, are there any alternatives, perhaps it is wise to start with something else if there is a choice. There isn't, really. I guess you could try to use AWT, but I would bet you'd find the same things you don't like there as well.
What about the Netbeans Platform, would anyone advise it?I don't really know what that is (GUI builders are the root of all evil), but I would definitely recommend learning how to code Swing, if you want to get into programming GUIs in Java. Thanks for your reply.

  • Question about the DB adapter

    Question about the DB adapter
    ns2006.0.7
    Question:
It seems that we can only have 1 db adapter, but in the adapter defiition we have to specify the database.  If I want to communicate to several different databases on different platforms, Oracle / SQL I need to install a DB adapter for each database connection.
I can't figure out how to add a second DB adapter, does anyone know how?
    Thank you
    Daniel

    Hi
We're new at developing our own agents etc. We've leveraged the supplied DB agent and written the relevant adapter, however we're struggling with the transformation.
Could I be cheeky and ask if anyone would be willing to share a transformation they have written for the DB adapter? Unfortunately no-one in our team has had past XML experience, so we're trying to backwards engineer from examples.

    *{ /WEB-INF/web.xml* - The +Web Application Deployment
Descriptor+ for your application. This is an XML file describing
the servlets and other components that make up your application,
along with any initialization parameters and container-managed
security constraints that you want the server to enforce for you.
This file is discussed in more detail in the following subsection.
As mentioned above, the <code>/WEB-INF/web.xml</code> file contains the
Web Application Deployment Descriptor for your application. As the filename
extension implies, this file is an XML document, and defines everything about
your application that a server needs to know (except the context path,
which is assigned by the system administrator when the application is
    deployed).
The complete syntax and semantics for the deployment descriptor is defined
in Chapter 13 of the Servlet API Specification, version 2.3. Over time, it
is expected that development tools will be provided that create and edit the
deployment descriptor for you. In the meantime, to provide a starting point,
    a [basic web.xml file|http://localhost:8080/docs/appdev/web.xml.txt]
is provided. This file includes comments that describe the purpose of each
    included element.
NOTE - The Servlet Specification includes a Document
Type Descriptor (DTD) for the web application deployment descriptor, and
Tomcat 6 enforces the rules defined here when processing your application's
<code>/WEB-INF/web.xml</code> file. In particular, you must
enter your descriptor elements (such as <code><filter></code>,
    <code><servlet></code>, and <code><servlet-mapping></code> in

  • Question about Mac mini

I have a powerbook, but I want to get a Mac Mini for the windows use instead of upgrading and buying a new desktop (by Windows ie Dell). The question is can I have a mac mini and use my powerbook screen for the monitor?
    Thanks.

    Hello,
Not directly. The PowerBook cannot act as a monitor for the other computer.
And, the devices to connect the other computer to the PowerBook's USB or FireWire port (to pipe video in that way) would introduce such a lag that you would find games unplayable (and even controlling your mouse would be very difficult).
You could try a remote control program such as:
    http://www.netopia.com/software/products/tb2/mac/index.html
You would then sit at the PowerBook, and remotely control the Mac Mini through a home network. Everything would appear on your screen as if you were sitting in-front of the Mac Mini.
Now, the program mentioned would only work for Mac OS to Mac OS remote control. But, there are Mac to Windows remote control options out there as well. But, they are a little trickier to set-up. But, one solution uses VNC networking and programs (of which there is a version for just about every platform / operating system).
But, the trick there is that you need to be able to see what you're doing on the Mac Mini computer long enough to setup the remote control program.
I'd suggest just finding another monitor for the other computer. They can be had for free and often only $5 if you buy them used. But, check around.
    I hope this helps.
Let us know if you have other questions.

Hi, My name is Jeffry. I need information about Java Platform Overview For Manager (WJTB-310).

Is there a programming language material in WJTB-310 or just an overview ?

    Thanks

I thought I'd give you a response even if I can't answer your question completely. (I think we ought to start a separate thread entitled "How do you get any replies on this forum???") Here is what I have been forced to do. I introduced some JavaScript on the web page that contains the applet I want to be run. The sole purpose of the JavaScript is to detect which platform the client is on. If it's not MacIntosh, then I have JavaScript write the <object><embed> tag used by the Java plug-in. It it is MachIntosh, then I have JavaScript write the regular <applet> tag and let the Mac browsers do as best they can. With mixed and disappointing results. Netscape 6.2 crashes with a lot of applets. IE 5 brings up the applet okay but certain Swing components aren't displaying properly. The MacIntosh I've been testing on is version 9.1. I'm trying OS X tomorrow.
Why don't you send a reply to my query under the Java Plug-in Forum--from aronsz, dated 06/11/02--if you have some more info by now. I sure would appreciate it.

  • Question about Java's HttpServer: Threading? Backlog?

    Hello,
I have two questions about Java's HttpServer (com.sun.net.httpserver). From the JavaDoc:
    >
Management of threads can be done external to this object by providing a Executor object. If none is provided a default implementation is used.
    >
How can I get information about the default implementation in 1.6.0_13? Do you know the behavior? From my observations, the default implementation uses no Threads, meaning every request is handled in the same Thread, this results in handling the requests to the HttpServer one after another.
    Is this right?
The second question is about this, also from the JavaDoc:
    >
When binding to an address and port number, the application can also specify an integer backlog parameter. This represents the maximum number of incoming TCP connections which the system will queue internally. [...]
    >
When setting the backlog to -1, it uses the systems default backlog. How can I determine the systems default backlog? Can some lines of Java code reveal it (there is no getBeacklog() method)? Or is it up to the Operating System (we use Redhat Linux)?
Thanks a lot for your help!
    Regards,
    Timo

How can I determine the systems default backlog? You can't. There is no API for that even at the C level.
Can some lines of Java code reveal itNo.
Or is it up to the Operating System (we use Redhat Linux)?Yes. Linux provides a large default. It seems to be at least 50 on most platforms. This is not something you should be worrying about.

  • Question about Lego Mindstorms Capabilities

Hello, thank you for reading my question!
I am currently working on the creation of a teleoperated robotics lab. for a introductory robotics course. I wish to allow students to control a labyrinth-solver robot via Labview, with the Lego NXT toolbox. A computer server will be connected to the Lego via Bluetooth, and the student communicates with the server via  a web browser VI (a web published VI). I am interested on the Lego Mindstorm platform but I wanted to ask some questions about its software capabilities:
*Is it posible via a web VI interface for the student to load a program onto the Lego Mindstorm? My idea is to allow the student to load a VI (or the equivalent of a LEGO NXT ".exe")onto the server, and the server to load the program to the Lego. The Web VI already has some parameters the student can change a simple program execution (see [1]), but I also wanted to give the student the chance of loading their own program for more complicated algorithms.

  • Using Coherence in Netbeans Platform application

Has anyone else tried to make a Netbeans module for a Netbeans Platform application (that includes the Netbeans IDE) that acts as a non-storage-enabled grid member?
The reason I ask is because in my attempt, getCache() returns null. I am curious what kind of situation would cause getCache() to return null without throwing any kind of exception?

    Hi,
I would expect an IllegalArgumentException if a scheme mapping could not be found for the given cache name. I'm not sure when it is ever expected to return a null from getCache(). Are you just calling CacheFactory.getCache("cache-name")? Could you give some more information about your setup / configuration and how you are calling getCache()?
    Thanks
