Question on Olite installation, best way to do?

Hi,
We have Olite server install on a window 2003. We use the setup on the disk.
Some person at my office said we should done the install with a publication managed by the Oracle application server.
What is the best way install Olite server to reduce problem and make more easy the maintenance (upgrade), use setup or a publication?
I have a second question,
is here a way to create a service in window so Olite should start at the window startup (manage olite like other service: linstener, instance in standard Oracle rdbms)?
If yes, what are the step?
Thanks

Here is an older thread that discusses this:
Mobile server in standalone mode
Oracle Application Server with Oracle Mobile Server is the recommended configuration in terms of management and deployment. Standalone is fine as well, just not as many administration features as OAS (start/stop services via opmn control)

• (workflow question) - What is the best way to handle audio in a large Premiere project?

Hey all,
This might probably be suitable for any version of Premiere, but just in case, I use CS4 (Master Collection)
I am wrestling in my brain about the best way to handle audio in my project to cut down on the time I am working on it.
This project I just finished was a 10 minute video for a customer shot on miniDV (HVX-200) cut down from 3 hours of tape.
I edited my whole project down to what looked good, and then I decided I needed to clean up all the Audio using Soundbooth, So I had to go in clip by clip, using the Edit in SoundBooth --> Render and Replace method on every clip. I couldn't find a way to batch edit any audio in Soundbooth.
For every clip, I performed similar actions---
1) both tracks of audio were recorded with 2 different microphones (2 mono tracks), so I needed only audio from 1 track - I used SB to cut and paste the good track over the other track.
2) amplified the audio
3) cleaned up the background noise with the noise filter
I am sure there has to be a better workflow option than what I just did (going clip by clip), Can someone give me some advice on how best to handle audio in a situation like this?
Should I have just rendered out new audio for the whole tape I was using, and then edit from that?
Should I have rendered out the audio after I edited the clips into one long track and performed the actions I needed on it? or something entirely different? It was a very slow, tedious process.
Thanks,
Aza

Hi, Aza.
Given that my background is audio and I'm just coming into the brave new world of visual bits and bytes, I would second Hunt's recommendation regarding exporting the entire video's audio as one wav file, working on it, and then reimporting. I do this as one of the last stages, when I know I have the editing done, with an ear towards consistency from beginning to end.
One of the benefits of this approach is that you can manage all audio in the same context. For example, if you want to normalize, compress or limit your audio, doing it a clip at a time will make it difficult for you to match levels consistently or find a compression setting that works smoothly across the board. It's likely that there will instead be subtle or obvious differences between each clip you worked on.
When all your audio is in one file you can, for instance, look at the entire wave form, see that limiting to -6 db would trim off most of the unnecessary peaks, triim it down, and then normalize it all. You may still have to do some tweaking here and there, but it gets you much farther down the road, much more easily.Same goes for reverb, EQ or other effects where you want the same feel throughout the entire video.
Hope this helps,
Chris

Hm, Job Definitions are migratable objects, just like a Process Definition. So technically, you should be able to upgrade them, like any other object.

• Newbie Question: Best Way to Set Up Library and Photos?

Hello, all — I've been using Aperture for several years now, but I've been doing so with no structure or planning. Now I've got an Aperture library that is nearly 300G, mostly unorganized, and slow —  and I'm ready to clean things up. My general question: "What is the best way to organize Aperture Libraries/Photos?" Right now I've got one library and about 90% of the photos are stored "inside" Aperture.  I'd like to free up space on my internal hard drive and move my library (or libraries) and photos to an external drive.
So my big questions are:
"Should I have more than one library?"
"Should I store my libraries on my internal or external drives?"
"Should I store my pictures inside our outside of Apertur?" and
"Starting with the library I already have, how should I go about making these changes?"
I know these are all big topics and a lot to ask, but I'm feeling lost and would like at leat some pointers to get started.  I guess I should also point out I do limited editing of my pictures: the vast majority are downloaded from my phone and kept as-is in Aperture.
THANKS!
Mark

So my big questions are:
"Should I have more than one library?"
That's up to you of course but there are pros and cons to multiple libraries.
The biggest con is that by splitting up your library you cannot search all your images at one time. So say you split by year,  you can no longer get all images of Aunt Sally at Bobby's Birthday through the years. You would need to go into each year library, do the search and export the images.
Also having multiple libraries can complicate housekeeping.
On the plus side the libraries are smaller but there isn't a lot to be gained from smaller libraries. Aperture is able to handle fairly large libraries.
"Should I store my libraries on my internal or external drives?"
Again it's an individual choice but as a rule you want your libraries on the fastest drives you have. Up until the release of USB 3 and Thunderbolt that meant the internal drive, now you have more latitude.
So old system I say keep it internal. Newer system, if you can afford the USB 3 or Thunderbolt drives it's your choice.
"Should I store my pictures inside our outside of Apertur?" and
Again it's a users choice. Keeping the originals managed (inside the library) greatly simplifies backups. You backup the library the originals are backed up also.  If the originals are referenced you need to make separate provisions for backing them up.
A plus for having referenced originals is that you can store them on slower media and save space and money. Again before the new Macs this was more of as issue as you would want the library on the internal drive for speed but to save space you could put the originals on slower external drives.
The other reason to store the originals referenced is if you need to access them with another application. If they are managed and in the library it really isn't feasible to access them from another application.
"Starting with the library I already have, how should I go about making these changes?"
Well step one is to make sure you have good working backups of everything. There is a good chance you will not get this right on the first shot and being able to just wipe everything out and start again will be both a big help and a great stress reliever.
Other then that you need to decide how you what the final setup to look. You could make some teat libraries and try out different setups to see what feels better for how you work.  This will also let you play around with the commands and steps you will need to do when you do it for real.
Good luck and if you take nothing else away from all this pay attention to the part about having backups before you start. You will be very happy you did.

• What's the best way to detect that text fits into ContainerControllers without scrolling?

Hi.
Question
What's the best way to detect that text typed by user (or added programmatically) exceeds available container space and find out where starts truncated part? Is there available some other (than described bellow) easy way to detect it or disallow set of controllers to receive more characters that can be displayed in given composition area?
My partialy failed attempt (simplified)
For example lets say that I've got an editable textflow with attached two instances of ContainerController.
var flow:TextFlow = createSomeFlowFromGivenString(sampleText),
        firstController = new ContainerController(firstSprite, 100, 30),
        lastController = new ContainerController(secondSprite, 600, 30);
flow.interactionManager = new EditManager(new UndoManager());
flow.flowComposer.addController(firstController);
flow.flowComposer.addController(lastController);
flow.flowComposer.updateAllControllers();
With enabled vertical scroll policy I can compare height of the composition in last controller with height of the content:
var bounds:Rectangle = lastController.getContentBounds(),
        overflow:Boolean =  lastController.compositionHeight < bounds.height;
trace('Content does not fit into given area?', overflow)
But when I switch vertical scroll policy off (lastController.verticalScrollPolicy = ScrollPolicy.OFF) - unfortunately this no longer works...(In my case scrolling should be dissabled, since text areas might have only one line with restricted width)
Use case
I want to create fillable form. Field might have a single or multiple lines. One field might start in the middle of the page, continue in the next line where it spreads through whole page and end in the - quarter of page width long  - third line. Text typed by the user can't exceed given area since it might cover some static text that sits right after/below field.
Something like ascii image bellow:
                <PAGE>

|               [Field starts here........ |
........................................
........................................
Ends here..]

[Another field] xxxx  xxxx xxxxxxxx x xx
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

                              [One more..
.....]

Info:
[......]  <-- form fields starts with '[' character, and ends with ']'
xxx       <-- sample, static text
| and _   <-- page borders

I've tried something like that previously, but it didn't work because then I've got vertical scroll policy to set to 'auto'. After changing verticalScrollPolicy to ScrollPolicy.OFF  in the last container it worked like a charm.
Thanks zhen bian

• What's the best way to import ALL of my photos (34k +) and then share?

*Part I - importing:*
I've got approximately 34,400 photos on a networked drive that I need to be able to control using iPhoto. I want these files to stay on the network drive, but also be controlled by iPhoto (organized by date). Right now our photos folder on the network drive is a bit of a mess, some folders are named by date only and some are named by the event itself ("birthday 2009", etc.). I want this naming to go away in place of the iPhoto method (by date only). FYI, I am familiar with how to get to the "original" and "modified" folders/files within the iPhoto Library.
Question: Is there a way to get iPhoto to organize the photos (all by date) an leave the original photos on the networked drive? or do I need to:
> Import ALL photos into my iPhoto with the "import photos into iPhoto Library" option checked (iPhoto copies all original files to my laptop hard drive)
> Then manually move the file structure (all new folders created - by date) back to my networked drive
> THEN...remove all photos from the iPhoto Library and re-import the newly organized photos from the network drive but unchecking the "import photos into iPhoto Library" option.
Right now, both of our MacBook Pro's use iPhoto to access those photos independently of one another (each laptop does their own thing). This also creates problems because when files are imported on my laptop they are saved locally (on my laptop) and not on the network drive, same goes for my wife's laptop. Then she's not able to see those new photos.
*Part II - sharing:*
I'm also in the process of trying to figure out the best way to share all of our photos between our different laptops. Using the "sharing" function in iPhoto isn't ideal since that requires both laptops to be on.
My understanding of sharing the iPhoto library itself (having it saved on the networked drive) between two laptops is that only one laptop can access this library at a time, or there's potential of having the files become corrupt (two laptops trying to access the file at the same time).
Question: What's the best way to share photos between two laptops?
Thanks in advance

RONBO
Is there a way to get iPhoto to organize the photos (all by date) an leave the original photos on the networked drive?
Yes there is. But I don't recommend it as a way of working with iPhoto.
Simply go to iPhoto Menu -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck 'Copy Files to the iPhoto Library on Import'.
Now iPhoto will not copy the files, but rather simply reference them on your HD. To do this it will create an alias in the Originals Folder that points to your file. It will still create a thumbnail and, if you modify the pics, a Modified version within the iPhoto Library Folder.
However, you need to be aware of a number of potential pitfalls using this system.
1. Import and deleting pics are more complex procedures
2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them on systems prior to 10.5 and iPhoto 08. Even with the later versions issues can still arise if you move the referenced files to new volumes or between volumes.
3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
The problems arise when you change the path to the Files. iPhoto has no way of reconnecting that path and you could find yourself resolving aliases one at a time for all 34k Photos.
Other apps, such as Aperture have a command to re-connect with the master files.
FYI, I am familiar with how to get to the "original" and "modified" folders/files within the iPhoto Library.
Good for you but never, ever access the files this way. Period. Within the iPhoto Package File there are no user sercviceable parts.
All your work gets done in the iPhoto Window. Everything you need to do can be done from there - and must be.
Then manually move the file structure (all new folders created - by date) back to my networked drive
Never, ever break up the internals of the iPhoto Package File. You'll break iPhoto if you do.
Also, what format is that Networked Drive? iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, saving edits and sharing the photos.
Question: What's the best way to share photos between two laptops?
If simultaneous sharing is your goal then you need to use a Media Server app. iPhoto isn't one.
The key really is the format of the NAS. IF you can make it Mac OS Extended (Journaled) then you can easily store your Library on it and share it. Otherwise you need to use another application for the job.

• What is the best way to create a bookmark for a returning user??

Hello all... hello again Steve...I am back with another question- what is the best way to implement a bookmark system so returning users can pick up where they left off in an AW lesson? I have tried the usual internet searches, always do, but the few samples/answers I have found were AW5, not much help...
I have a dozen or so maps attached to my framework, I would like a user to return to the last map he viewed before closing. (My AW is communicating fine with an Access database, so if passing a variable to Access and then back to AW when the lesson starts is on the right track, let me know...) If the answer here is too complicated, maybe nudge me in the right direction and I will dive back in.
Thanks in advance to anyone who has some guidance, I really do appreciate it!
Terry

Try this outline, see if it helps ...
Grab a reference to the Map as you enter it, then save that to the database when you leave.
You want something that will give you the equivalent to a page number - if you have 7 maps hanging off the Framework, and the user is in the 6th map when he exits, you want to save the number 6.
There are scores of ways to do this, but probably the easiest is just to attach a calc to each map that has this code
(I don't have Authorwar handy to check syntax, so you should check!)
BookMarkPage = ChildIDtoNum(IconParent(IconID), IconID) <-- tells Authorware to return the "page number" of the current map
Save BookMarkPage to your Access database on exit .
On return, read the bookmark back into BookMarkPage, ask the user if he wants to return to bookmark. If yes, use a calculated navigation that uses
ChildNumToID(@the name of your Framework or it's ID, BookMarkPage)
Note that you could wrangle something similar by saving the IconID of your Map, or the IconTitle, but both of these can break if you ever update your file by adding or removing pages, renaming them etc. With this method, all you need is a simple page count check that ensures that you are not trying to nav to a page number that does not exist (use IconNumChildren).

• Best way to transfer disk contents from dead Cube (G4) to new iMac (Intel)

Forgive me if this has been covered before - my search didn't find anything on this particular problem.
My (upgraded, but ancient) Cube finally bit the dust during a power surge/outage at the house. Actually, it was just the power brick that died, but I have ordered a new iMac to replace the Cube. My question is on the best way to transfer the data and info from my old hard drive to the new iMac when it arrives. I am thinking of buying a Firewire or USB enclosure for the Cube's disk (Western Digital 120 GB) and using it as an external drive at the new iMac. Since the Cube is effectively dead, I don't think I can use Migration Assistant, can I? And should this transfer be the first thing I do on the new iMac? I know that many of my apps won't run natively on the Intel iMac, but some will under emulation, so I want to save many of them (Cube was still a G4 PPC). I also want to be able to transfer my iTunes and iPhoto libraries, all my Office files, and other data without having to individually copy them all. Can someone suggest the best course of action?
Thanks in advance,
Joe Crabtree

Hi Joe Crabtree;
Please remember that you are changing from PowerPC to Intel architecture so you will want to install all application on the new iMac and only migrate data files. Migrating applications from PowerPC to Intel is a known way to create problems with your new iMac.

• What's the best way to organise your library?

I'm just getting to grips with Aperture and something has struck me. I'm not sure my existing libray is the best way to store my photos now I'm using Aperture.
Before using Aperture I had two folders called Digital Negatives and Final Prints.
Inside the Digital Negatives folder I then had sub folders named after the shoot date e.g. 25-03-2007 and inside these were all the RAW files I shot on that day.
Inside the Final Prints folder I then had sub folders named after what I was shooting and the date e.g. The London Eye 25th March 2007 and inside this where all the high res TIFF files I had created from the RAW files in the other folder.
As for naming, all files retain their orginal file name so a TIFF file I had converted from a RAW file would be called something like CRW_2878.TIFF and the matching RAW file would be CRW_2878.CRW.
What I've done is to create two projects from within Aperture called Digital Negatives and Final Prints and imported the respective photos into these projects as referrenced material and I am well into the whole keywording process.
Having now used Aperture for a few days I can see and appreciate how Aperture works and tracks versions even versions that have been edited in Photoshop so I'm thinking that instead what I should have done was to create a unique project for say each location/event I shot and then import both the RAW and TIFF files into this project and then stack each RAW file with it's corresponding TIFF file.
Question: Is this the best way of organising a large existing library consisting of RAW and TIFF files?
Question: Is there a way or a need to tell Aperture that a particular TIFF file is a version of a particular RAW file?
Question: Is there a way of 'merging' all these photos together so that I don't loose all the keywords and stacks etc that I've already added.
20" iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

One amateur's guess: you're coming to the right conclusion.
Since you never actually work on the master itself, yet can always see it (by pressing 'M'), there's no need to make master/other an organizing principle. Events, or something that anchors images' categorial whereabouts in your memory, seems more useful. (Keywording is essential anyway.)
If your TIFFs are made by editing in an external editor, they'll get stacked with the originals automatically. Otherwise you'll have to do that. In any case, what you'll probably need to do is either
a) search on Text such as "tiff" to locate files of various kinds, and move bunches of 'em around that way, and/or
b) in the Browser go to List view and use the "sort-by" columns to group the things you want to move.
You should be able, one of those ways, to reorganize your images in fairly large chunks.
Warning: doing massive reorganization in a library seems to produce problems sometimes -- wrong thumbnails, running out of disk space. See various recent posts. It's probably safest to do a relatively modest amount of reorganization (moving images from one Project to another) at a time, meaning quit and restart Aperture between times.
Others can give you more pro advice, though.

• What is the best way to sync media onto the iPhone using iTunes?

I know of two ways- one is be simply dragging items onto the iphone folder. The other is by clicking the iphone folder and selecting which playlists, artists, ect I want to sync.
Is there any difference between the two?

I have the same question: what is the best way to sync documents between mac devices?
But I want to be clear:  normally when we use the word "synchronize" or "sync" we are referring to an automatic update to the latest version of the document, whatever the document.
Just to be clear:  to "transfer" documents is not really the same as to "synchronize".  I will add to the question here with my thoughts. Please excuse me if the om only wants to transfer documents.
We have tried, over many months, to use SugarSync.  It worked great when I only put in about 10 files to be synced.  It took the latest version and updated it on the other computers that were connected.  But when we tried to sync the whole disk ... we just could NOT get it to work right. Meaning it would scan absolutely ALL of the files on the computer looking for the ones that were modified rather than just taking the lastest ones modified and syncing those.  Their tech department was not much help: I followed all of the steps they told me to do but we just could not get it to work right.  What a disapointment (and a loss of money).
I would love to find a software that automatically detects what the last modified files were and it will update ONLY that on the other devices (no matter what kind of files they are).
Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks

• Best way to create a GUI questionaire

Hello everyone
What is the best way to go about building a GUI based questionnaire? with questions and line for the answers.?
Thanks for the answers.

What a fantastically vague question.
Have you considered handing out sheets of paper and ballpoint pens? :o)
You could do a simple questionnaire in HTML.
Form layouts in Java are probably best done in TableLayout (third party, free, see Google)
But to answer your question directly, undoubtedly the best way to build it is to do so in a comfy chair with a nice view, listening to some Senser or perhaps Orbital, whilst consuming a decent bottle of Gigondas.

• Replacing MacBook Pro's optical drive with SSD. What is the best way to migrate data?

I have a time machine backup on external drive.
I would like to:
1. clean install Lion on the new SSD (120 GB)
2. restore apps from my backup on the SSD
3. keep only data on the existing HDD
My questions:
What is the best way to make it?
Can I just keep the existing system on my non-SSD HDD, and after having Lion on SSD keep just data and delete the system libraries? Or is it better to format the whole disk and restore data from time machine backup (so it is not fragmented...).
Thanks for any tips in advance!
Antonin

OK, thanks a lot.
And after reformatting the old HDD can I - can I tell Time Machine where to recover my folders (apps --> SSD, data --> old HDD)?
I mean when Time Machine starts recovering my 450 GB of files onto 120 GB SSD will it ask me to decide what put where?

• Best way to show movie release date by year under "Movies" section

I am a proud owner of a new 2nd gen Apple TV. It does everything I hoped. I am using IDentity 2 to capture the movie Metadata and import into a new m4v file. All data is trnsferred into iTunes. The question: What is the best way to have the release year show in Apple TV? I currently have a description, actor, director, time, etc showing. The Metadata is taken from IMDB, so the release date is listed in the video description when I "get info" in iTunes. As you can imagine, I don't want to manually input the release year in every movie file name. Any suggestions?

No asnswer. I can't find an answer on the web either. How many more years till Apple fixes this?

• Best way to lengthen a clip in the middle of sequence?

Setup:
FCP 7 with a newb at the wheel.
I've got a sequence with about 30 clips in it.
Problem:
Let's say I want to lengthen the duration of clip #17 by a second or two on the timeline. The best way to to figure out how do this was a bit cumbersome. I had to:
1) Move clips 18 thru 30 further down the timeline.
2) Lengthen clip 17 to where I want it
3) Delete the gap between 17 and 18.
I've searched and searched for an easier way to do this but haven't had any luck. Unless I'm using them wrong, ripple, roll, and slip tools don't do it because they either affect the length of the adjacent clips or change the in point of my clip.
Question:
What's the best way to lengthen a clip in the middle of a sequence?

Select the cut between 17 and 18.
Press 'u' twice (Only the left side of the cut is selected that way.
Press '>' or SHIFT-'>' as many times as you like to ripple the clip to the length f your desire.
OR
Double click on this cut betweeen clip 17 and 18.
The trim window opens.
Click on the Left window of the Trim Window (note that only the left window will have a green line on top now).
Again use the '>' button. And again this will trim the shot. Only now you'll be able to see what the new outgoing frame is (left window).
Most important:
Do as Tom Wolsky says and read the manual about ripple and trimming and roll and slip and slide. That'll be very valuable tools for editing fast and easy.

• The best way to change BO layer (in B2B Java class)

Hi, mate:
One question, what is the best way to modify a business object.
For example: in B2B java, there is a class:
BidMgrImpl.java, however I want to modify some code for method Bid(),and for the action flow and JSP, I do not need to modify them.
I am looking for the simpliest way to implement this. instead of modify from JSP, to config.xml, action, and BidMgrImpl.java?
Cheers,

Hi, Prashil:
Thanks for your reply.
And a basic question, I am using NWDS now, and have none exprience of the tool.
I followed one PDF file(How_To_Create_Custom_App_ECO5200.pdf) to create my application(b2b_xyz), now I have three applications:
- LPJ_CRM_Db2b_xyzsap.com
- LPJ_CRM_Dcrmhomeshrext~sap.com
- LPJ_CRM_Dcrmisawebb2b~sap.com (this contains all JSP files under webcontent folder).
my question is if I need extend one class, where and how can I create:
for example in SAP application:
com.sap.isa.auction.businessobject.b2x.BidMgrImpl
In this class, if I need extend, what's gonna be the classpath, and where I can create this subclass.
