Question on variants, TVARV etc

Gurus,
This might sound like a basic question, but nevertheless I shall ask.
I have a program, which has two fields for selection
1. Task
2. Variant
There is a create variant/delete variant and change variant options below the above two parameters.
I can click on create variant, and then in the next screen, input values for few fields and save the variant, say as Z1.
Now my first screen has the task input and Z1 as the variant field input.
Now my intention is to run the program for multiple tasks and multiple variant selections (Second screen entries).
I was planning to save variables in TVARV table, so that programattically I can update the field values of the second screen and then run the program. But how do I handle the variant for the task and variant combo programatically?
Hope my question is clear. I want to handle the two level variants scenario dynamically!

Eternal ball, flashing question mark, kernel panic, etc... all! HELP!

Think this is a good, one... Here is the story:
Some apps will crash, that always happens, right? So I did not pay much attention to it until it was way too often. Learned about disk utility, repaired permissions on a regular basis and moved on. But then... One day disk utility told me there was something that could NOT be repaired. I ran and bought an External HD (usb.. not a good choice, but I found out that too late for an exchange). Backing up from there on was kind of a weekly thing.
But nothing to worry about, I could still use my iBook pretty well and with no problems. Then... one fine day I could not SAVE ANYTHING! Everything was working "normal", but when I wanted to save my work. It told me that I could not do it! Not even making a new bookmark from Firefox!
So I did verify and repair from disk utility, and I ran the hardware test giving me the following:
*ERROR CODE: 2STF/8/3:ATA -100 ata -6 -Master*
I have no idea what that means, but I used it to look for help online and everything pointed out that my HD needed to be replaced. I believe at this point is when I met the flashing folder icon with the question mark. Suddenly it would not detect the HD! But then... after turning it off and on for a few times it would see it and start-up normally. In one of those lucky start-ups I backed up all I thought was important in the external HD and made a clean install of OS X. Oh... and it is fun to try to install OS X when.. there is no HD in the list to pick for your destination! After a lot of patience, it would show up, but then is when I met the kernel panic mesg! After a few more tries (yes, I am a very patient person... sometimes), I finally could make a clean install of OS X. I even partitioned the HD to make sure there was nothing there.
Ok... seemed like it liked it.. but after a little while, strange things happened again, and after the restart, the blinking folder with the question mark again...
So... no choice, have to replace my HD right? I get a brand new Seagate, 120 Gb, 5400 rpm. Followed instructions from ifixit.com and after 3 hours (and a lot of fun!) I replaced the hard drive on my beloved iBook. This was really fun!
Installed the software on the new HD.. everything looks fine... for a few minutes. I tried to use right away what I use everyday to see if it works: web browser, iTunes, Activity Monitor, played a dvd perhaps, etc... And..? Nop... started crashing again... Got the blinking question mark after restart, etc. But now.. the hardware tests reports me no problems.
Ok... it was not the HD, but I already bought one, and installed it myself!... lets move on and see where is my problem.
Could it be the ram?
This model has only one slot of removable ram, and a built-in DIMM that I cannnot replace +(or can I?)+, so I remove the one I can, and restart it without it. First it looks fine again, everything is working, but after a while it starts crashing again. So.. it's not the ram... or at least it's not +this one+.
So... I think its time for a Professional to take a look at it, right?. So I took it to a Mac Store (not Apple store) and explained EVERYTHING to the guy that received my beloved iBook, he takes notes and tells me that it has to stay for a few days. After 1 week I receive a call from the store (another employee) telling me the sad news that my HARD DRIVE NEEDS TO BE REPLACED! And that they were very sorry but they cannot recover any of my data... what data?? All that was there was the OS!!!
So... a deep breath and I explain to him everything over the phone. Ok.. he says he will talk with the tech-guy and I'll hear from them in a few more days. I did...
I was very glad to hear it was a cable that connects the HD to the Logic Board (that's what I understood.. I think). That this was only 20 dollars, but somehow, with the labor I ended up paying around 100 dlrs! I found out later that apple changes this cable everytime they upgrade a HD.
Ok.. 200 dlrs spent already ($100 on my Seagate HD + $100 for the cable..), but if get my iBook to work again I'll be happy.
So I go home and start to work on installing and making everything work again: firefox, iTunes, fugu, tried cyberduck, taco, ... everything looked fine. But after a while... it happened again. Sometimes I don't even get the blinking folder, just a grey screen. I turn it off, and then comes the blinking '?' or it starts-up... and if it does, after a while it would crash.
(I started this post on my iBook, and I was like 2/3rd's through when I got the ball... and no response at all... tried force-quit... and nothing, had to power off..AND start this post all over again on my girlfriend's!!! )
So here I am... Of course I want to take it back to the guys at the MacStore and
complain about their poor job... But does anyone here has a good idea of what could it be?
My thoughts are something like this: Seems like if you do not use a lot of memory (I only have 512 Mb total, so a lot of it comes from the virtual, right?) it works fine, but somehow if it reaches a point where it needs more than a certain amount it would crash. I dont know if this even makes sense, but that's my feeling. The guys at the MacStore told me that they tested around 100 times restarting the computer and it looked fine, so yeah... if all they did was use a software to restart once and again, and again... without really using the memory, they would not see the problem, right? The problem comes later.. when you use the iBook.
Could it be then that the problem comes from the ram that is built-in? If so.. can this be replaced? Is it worth it? Can I do it myself?
Too many questions...
Any thoughts would be more than welcome and...

yeah....
the problem is that I do not have a firewire external HD, and it will not boot from my usb external...
Anyway... I am back from the MacStore and the guys told me that the next step would be to replace/work on the logic board, and that that was too expensive a job to do an an old iBook like mine, they did not recommend it to anyone (they told me they charge between 600-800 dlrs for this kind of job).
So... seems like my iBook is in a very bad shape.
I saw DT&T online and it seems like they do the job for half the price of the MacStore (before shipping costs), but... still, is it worth it?
I was thinking in the possibility to find someone who sells a used iBook in pieces because of a crashed screen or something, to get another logic board and try to replace it myself, but... is this something an amateur can do by himself?
Haven't checked ifixit.com for that yet.
Any ideas??

Question about using TVARV in an ABAP program

Hello gurus, Im sorry about the silly question.
I have a question about using TVARV in an ABAP program.
A program is presenting a problem and I think that in this code:
SELECT SIGN OPTI LOW HIGH
FROM TVARV
INTO TABLE R_1_163431035_VELOCIDADE
WHERE NAME = '1_163431035_VELOCIDADE'
AND    TYPE = 'S'.
IF ZMM001-VELOCIDADE_B   IN R_1_163431035_VELOCIDADE AND
      ZOPERADORAS-OPERADORA = 'ABCD' AND
      ZMM001-MATERIAL       IN R_1_163431035_PRODUTO.
ELSE.
ENDIF.
What happens is that the value "ZMM001-SPEED" B not exist in "R1_163431035_VELOCIDADE" but the program executes commands under the IF and not under the ELSE, as I imagine it would work. Is this correct ?
I am new to ABAP programming, but I have a lot of XP in other programming languages and this makes no sense to me.
Anyone know where I can find some documentation of the use of "TVARV" in ABAP programs?
I search the Internet if other programmers use TVARV this way, but found nothing, which leads me to think that was a quick and dirty solution that used here.
If this is a bad way to program, what would be the best way?

But in this case, the range is not empty, there are 17 records, in this way.:
For the column "SING" all values are "E"
It means that the result is false if ZMM001-VELOCIDADE_B has the same value as one of the 17 records (E = exclude).
For instance, if it has value 'C' and one of 17 records matches C, then the result is false.
The "IF" with "IN" using "TVARV" as used in the program of the post above has the same behavior of a selection screen?
Yes, the same behavior as the selection criterion to be exact. You can press the help key in the complex selection dialog for more info.
I know it's a silly and very basic question, but other language that I used, only the SQL has the "IN" operator, but I think they work in different ways, so I would like to understand how it works in ABAP.

Questions on user security etc

Hello, we are getting ready to implement an SOA strategy within our company and have decided to use XI as the interface to SAP from any other system. We have some (I have) questions on what some of the different approaches are for security. If anyone could help me with the following info (I have searched and searched and just not clear)
So before reading the scenario's here is the main thing I am trying to accomplish. Have webservices that take in a userID and password that is not stored in XI but on our LDAP server (like we have in the portal) and pass this to the back end ensuring user has writes to do desired function in sap. We want every user id so we can track if someone creates an purchase request etc, (instead of setting up a system id, audit puposes) So with that background I have the following scenarios
Scenario 1: Have a single sign on like the portal, so the user signs on with there normal account and XI accepts and forwards the request (this would mainly be a webservice) (I have seen some single sign on documentation but curious if it works in XI as it does in the portal)
Scenario 2: Same as one, but use ADS/LDAP as our authentication engine.
Scenario 3: Have userid put in, but no authentication is done on the front end but user is authenticated against the sap system and if allowed rfc/proxy is executed otherwise error message unauth is returned.
Scenario 4: Is the propagate principle mainly just to ensure the user has all rights to run all calls within internal XI procedures and wouldn't really apply to just ensuring user has rights in the backend?
I am sorry for the long question, I do reward points and I am just trying to get started on the right path with XI

Some questions on interrupts, threads etc

Havng gone through some documentation on interrupt, kernel level threads etc in WDF, I got a couple of questions:
1) Can a hardware interrupt be preempted by another interrupt in a single processor system?
2) What exactly is the difference between thread preemption and thread interrupt? Doesnt both mean stopping the current thread and putting it aside?
3) When an iterrupt is handled by an ISR, does the ISR always have to schedule a DCP? If the ISR itself can handle the interrupt, is the DPC needed?
4) I understand that spin locks are used for synchronisation at IRQL <=DISPATCH_LEVEL. EVT_WDF_IO_QUEUE_IO_WRITE works at <= DISPATCH_LEVEL. If I set Synchronisation scope of a write queue as SynchronisationScopeQueue, should I still go for a spin
lock, if the write callback and say an ioctl callback uses a shared resource?
5 )Kernel dispatcher objects are mutex, timer, event, semaphore etc. But If i use a fast mutex or guarded mutex or oridinary mutex using say, KeAcquireFastMutex() isnt that then a kernel dispatcher object? What this distinction? Why should we go explicitly
go for kernel dispatcher object?
6) How can timers be used for kernel level synchronisation? How different is this from timers created using WdfTimerCreate()?
7) It is said that "Never wait on a kernel dispatcher object in any driver routine that can be called at IRQL>=DISPATCH_LEVEL.". Does it mean
we should not use synchronisation mechanisms in this level? Or if we can use, should the thread try to acquire a lock with a zero wait time? And proceed if it could acquire the lock and return if the lock was not acquired?
8) I understand that in order to execute an interrupt, a driver does not create any special threads but use a thread that happens to be running at the moment( arbitrary thread ) . My question is, in what way is this accomplished? What aspect of the arbitrary
thread is the interrupt using ? The arbitrary thread must obviously have been written for another purpose.

To answer the questions:
#1   An interrupt service routine (ISR) running a lower IRQL may be interrupted by another ISR running at a higher level.
#2   Having never heard of a thread interrupt, all I can say here is that a thread may be pre-empted for a lot of reasons.
#3   An ISR does not have to schedule a DPC unless it needs to do work that it cannot do at high IRQL.
#4   Assuming that the Write and IOCTL are on seperate queues, yes you need a a lock to protect shared resources.
#5   As the name implies kernel dispatcher objects allow scheduling (i.e. dispatching of another thread), while things like spinlocks do not.
#6    Timers are just another dispatching object, i.e. one can wait on them the same way one waits on a mutex or a semaphore. A WDF TIMER is basically a wrapper around a regular timer to take care of some of the housekeeping (particularily
with respect to stopping the driver etc)
#7     If a routine is running at DISPATCH_LEVEL you are limited to spin locks for synchronization. You can with a zero timeout check the status of a kernel dispatcher object.   In general, routines like this should be
designed to only use spinlocks.
#8    An arbitrary thread is just that, it may be a thread in any process. Basically a currently running thread is grabed and used to run the interrupt so that the scheduler which has overhead and is not designed to run at interrupt level

Defining Selection variables for program variant, TVARV table Help - urgent

Hi All,
Can anyone tell me, what is the transaction to create new variables in table TVARV to use them in my variant for fiscal year and WIP period fields in selection screen of SAPKKA07 program.I used STVARV and it creates variables in table TVARVC table not in TVARV table and moreover in creating a variant the selection variables are defaulted as variables from TVARVC table as input help but not the variables in TVARV table however I see and understand different from SAP Help. I know we can create the variable that way but, that is something hardway to do it. I want to go about it from transaction not meaning to update the table directly and moreover if I update the TVARV table directly as u said I still dont see the variable I created in the list I get on input help for selection variables while creating a program variant.

[SOLVED] Basic question about x2go, freenx, etc. compatibility

My goal is to simply enable remote desktop on my soon to be headless server. Given the number of posts here at Arch explaining the trouble with freenx and the Arch support of x2go, I'm confused there is not more talk about their compatibility. And as I've just discovered, they're not:
"Various open source terminal server projects such as x2go also use the NX protocol; however, x2go is not compatible with other NX servers and clients." (NX Technology)
This leaves me in a bit of a pickle. CentOS doesn't support x2go, and Arch doesn't support freenx. What's the best interoperable solution then? Either a sever app which supports x2go or a client app that supports NXX?

That comment strikes me as perfectly reasonable. The comment is pointing out that you are trying to use the wrong tool to do the job. That's not what Arch is designed for so if you try to use it that way, you'll have a hard time. Of course, you are free to do so if you wish. But if you ask for help, you'll be pointed to another distro because that is the right answer.
It has nothing to do with being "persnickty". The answer is the most helpful answer somebody can give you.
Note: I'm assuming the description of CentOS, Fedora etc. is correct. I know the description of Fedora to be correct but I don't actually know anything about CentOS. But on the assumption that description is also correct, that answer is the most helpful answer somebody could give you, even if it is not the answer you wanted to hear.

I have generate a transaction variant for tcodes: CO11N and CO15 then I have assigned some users to both transactions.
in SHD0
First I set the users to CO11N variant --> assign variant and set proposal.
with the same group of user i set the variant for tcode CO15.
when testing I realized the the field quantity in Good movements was non editable in CO15 (the last configuration for the list of users).
but in CO11N it was editable
I know there is an option to active the variant at the begginig of the transaction but this is not a solution since it makes for ALL non editable and not only the listed users. Also it affected all not considering the user assignenment.
How can I make it non editable in CO11N and CO15 at the same time for the list of users??

IRC question - connecting to server etc.

Hi everybody,
first of all : I don't know where to post this kind of question, therefore I post it here, because I'm a beginner in this area.
Can I connect to a IRC Server with my Java application? I think of something like this:
I start my java prog and specify : connect to server irc.<whatever> , then I join a channel with my username and password.
I know I could use an existing IRC Client, like MIRC or something else, but this is just the beginning of my question.
Can I get the output of this channel (what is posted by the users) and append it in e.g. my JTextPane ? (i know how to append text etc.)
I would appreciate any kind of help, if you know good links etc. I thankful too.

1) Anyone know of or have any information or tutorials or plug-ins on how to make OSMF videos work with closed captions for single or a multi-video player gallery for each video? (captions - this is very important for my job)
2) Does anyone know of any good and easy to understand (I'm mid-level in AS3) tutorials and/or source files on how to build an OSMF player preferably in Flash?
3) I know Flash Builder (Flex) some, but am better with Flash (CS4/5), but a lot of what I see is for Flex... what is preferred for OSMF - Flex or Flash or it doesn't matter?
4) I searched Amazon.com, but couldn't find - are there any books for OSMF?

If the replacement value called is an interval, you use this setting to specify whether the lower interval limit (from value) or the upper interval limit (to value) is used as the replacement value.
For formula variable, you can also choose the interval difference as the replacement value. Using this setting, you can easily calculate the difference of period boundaries. The interval difference is the from value minus the to value plus 1. For example, the period January to March gives a result of 3 (the to value 3, minus the from value 1, plus 1)

Aperture help/questions - File Size, Versions, etc

Hi,
I am new to the Mac, and after a small learning curve am now loving it. Can’t believe what I missed all those years under Windows. Anyway one of my biggest problems has been workflow and photo management, so I rushed out and bought Aperture without much investigation. I’m still getting to know it, and so far think it’s very good except for the following points, which may be down to my inexperience with the product rather than any shortcomings. I store all my shots as managed files in my Aperture library.
1. File sizes. Often I use Photoshop for minor/major modifications. There would be few shots that would not require some tweaking if I wanted to get the best image. I have PS3 set up as my external editor. My problem is the huge file size generated after using PS. For example my master file may be around 3mb (jpeg) but my PS file is 45mb! Now if I have a few versions of the PS file, as often is the case, I go from a few megabytes of storage for the image to a few hundred megabytes of storage!! Is there a way around this ??
What’s more if I create a Duplicate Version of the PSD version and do NOTHING it grows again. For example my initial JPEG is 2.78mb, I creat a new version via PS and add some adjustment layers and save the new version back. This new version has now grown to 45.56mb. I then wish to make another different version based on my previous version so I first select the version1 and then Duplicate Version. Now before I do ANYTHING if I save it back I get a new version with a file size of 68.49mb!!! If I do this again, my next version is hasn’t grown in size again, it’s still 68.49mb. What gives ??
2. Per 1) above can I save back from PS in JPEG and not PSD to bring the file size down. That is open the file in PS via the external editor in Aperture, make some adjustments and save it back as a new version in JPEG ??
3. Related to 2) above I often want to have multiple PS versions. For example the first one may just have some USM added. Subsequent ones however may have different crops, tonings, etc. So in Aperture what I do is create my first version and add the USM and whatever other standard treatments. Then save this. Then create a duplicate of this version and open the duplicate in PS via the external editor in Aperture. Make some changes then save back. Only now I have 4 files – the original, my version 1, the duplicate of this and my new version based on the duplicate. So I must now delete the duplicate (file three) version . Is there a better way ??
4. I find it hard sometimes to tell if I am on a master file or a version. Is there a way to definitely tell ? For example on occasion I have gone to delete a version, I get the dialog warning that all versions and masters will be deleted and then I seem to have lost both the version AND the master ?? This seems a bit dangerous.
5. The vault seems very slow to update when minor changes have been made. For example I created a new version of a master with a minor modification performed in Aperture (saturation set to zero) and then updated my vault. This should be a very quick process as the new version really just consists of some modification information and not the whole file. The update takes as long as if I were to add a few hundred megs of new photo’s to the library ! Is it overwriting the whole vault again, or is it just updating the changes (as I assume it should)
Sorry for the long winded explanations. Any advice/help/thoughts are much appreciated.

Check your Export Image settings like quality, size, DPI. Prior to Open with External Editor make the photograph as best as possible, all adjustments, crop, etc and then take it to Photoshop, back to Aperture and print it or upload to web etc. If the photograph is being used on the web there is no need to make a huge file

We are currently implementing Unifier with an expected go-live of early August. Am hoping I can solicit some feedback from some of you on a handful of questions.
How often do you do production backups?
Have you ever had to restore production to a backup?
How many environments do you have? Just uStage and Production or do you have additional environments?
How do you refresh your none production environments? How frequently?
Are you using Oracle's cloud service or are you self hosted?

My recommendations are based on a self-host model:

Rudy addressed this quite well - follow best practices for disaster recovery and data redundancy and you will be set.

I know of a few incidents across all customers over the past eight years where there has been a need to restore production from a backup. It rarely occurs but nonetheless is an important planning consideration.

Other environments worth considering include:
-- a training environment with periodic rollback to training baseline.
-- a second sandbox/uStage for testing releases prior to updataing your other environments.

Training is often refreshed on a semi-quarterly or quarterly basis depending on your use.

Cloud service - but I have extensive experience with self-hosted environments as well.

Question about variant in va00 condition

I know it is necessary to maintain va00 conditin for configurable material, but I am wondering how variant comes in va00 condition, do I need to create them before maintaining condition for va00? Otherwise how do they come?

Thanks for your answer but I want to be more specific.
The variant condition VA00 works on basis of particular characteristics that you would maintain in sales order.
Lets say that characteristic is ZCHAR and class is 300. when maintaining the charactistic values for this particular characteristic, you need to also maintain data in "Addl Data" tab. following needs to be maintained there :
Table Name - SDCOM , Field Name - VKOND.
I think the point is to write dependency here,let's say if ZCHAR has three values:red,blue,yellow, and the condition should be this way, red 1 USD,blue 2 USD, yellow 3 USD,so here dependencies should be$self.ZCHAR='red',$self.ZCHAR='blue',$self.ZCHAR='yellow'? Then once go to vk11 to create condition, then we need to created three variants and they are red, blue , yellow? Respective price will be 1,2,3?
Next you would need to write a dependency that would be linking this characteristic ZCHAR and variant condition VA00.

Misc Questions: Previous Report recovery etc..

1) Is there an easy way to save a report and then later go back and retrieve it? That is, during development and testing I'd like to have a couple of versions of the report without proliferating the reports with different names etc. What are some 'best practises' here in report development and testing?
2) Copy/Paste of CR fields: I recently copy/pasted some fields from one CR to another. The underlying fields didn't come across but the copy/paste seemed to work fine. Is there a way to find out what's missing-in-action on copy/pastes from one report to another? Best practises?
3) What other best practises are there?

this is what you are looking for.
if you are doing this on a windows machine you may be able to create a directory
run a process that checks that directory and automatically saves version in the background .
copy and paste has big issues as these are not simple objects the trick to get this to work I have found is to open ( big) the sections so no area of the paste goes outside the edge then paste then move them after.
best practice is use source control software.
