Questions about expected Java expertise

Hi,
For last 8 years I have been doing multimedia and web programming using Microsoft technologies. I have seen a job which is asking for a minimum of 6 months of experience in developing applications using Java 2 platform. They expect to have experience with Java Swing, JSP, J2EE, PowerBuilder, RDBMS, UML, HTML, XML and ASP.
It seems that they have web and non-web applications. Can someone tell me what kind of expertise someone with 6 months of experience will have with Java 2 platform keeping in view the above information?
I am comfortable with ASP but new to Java world. If you were conducting interviews what level of expertise would you expect?

and ASP. Don't be impressed by a list of BS. Listing "JSP, J2EE" means whoever wrote the ad has no clue and is just trying trying to sound impressive.
It seems that they have web and non-web applications.It mostly seems like their HR department has no technical knowledge. Which is expectable.

platform keeping in view the above information? Depending on what you're doing: none of it or all of it.
I am comfortable with ASP but new to Java world. If
you were conducting interviews what level of
expertise would you expect?In your case? Knowledge of UML and general development practices, knowledge of the stuff you did and the ability to learn Java.

Some question about mdm java api and portal content

Hi Gurus,
I am new to MDM. I am going to develop some web dynpro application using mdm java api.
My question is regarding the relationship between MDM version and NW version:
for example
1.MDM5.5 JAVA api can be deployed to CE 7.11 server?
2.MDM7.1 JAVA API can be deployed to CE 7.11 server? or can only be deployed to CE server.
the same question for the MDM portal content.
the possible dev environment for our company would be:
1.MDM7.1
2.CE7.2(do we need another EP7 server for the UWL?)

I am using Portal 7.0. MDM version is 7.1.
My problem is ... i am trying to connect WebDynpro (JAVA) to MDM7.1. But am unable to do so. I have a WD Frame in which i have a WD iView and the MDM iView. But i am unable to pass parameters from the WD iView to MDM Item Details iView.
Note:
1. I have deployed MDM JAVA API on NWDS
2. I have specified " * " as a parameter to pass from the URL in the Item Details iView.
Please help.

Some general questions about Sun Java Communications Suite

Hello Everybody,
We are a small group of individuals (2 Java developers and 1 Linux expert and Web Application developer), located in Germany.
We are fully new to �Solaris� and Sun Java Communications Suite and know, that it�s a highly professional software system for large scale deployment. However we plan to install (64 Bit version) and manage it in a small network environment, consisting of a Server (4 GB RAM, RAID 5, AMD Dual CPU) based on Solaris 10 (X86) and *20* clients based on Win XP, Solaris and Linux.
It�s a network of a non-profit organization, providing social services to local society.
At clients we will use the Communications Express and the needed services are: Calander, Mail and Address book. (no need of Outlook Connector, Instant Messaging, Document Management, etc.)
Our long-term aim is - after learning of professional architecting, deployment and management of Communications Suite - to provide integration and development services to organizations (schools and small / medium sized Business) and public in cooperation with ISP or infrastructure-providers like Sun Microsystems.
Now, our main questions are:
*1.-* Is the Server phy. recourse enough to deliver the mentioned services of Communication Suite to 20 clients without problems?
*2.-* Isn�t Communications Suite oversized for such small network mentioned above or better, if we use another collaboration software system like Opengroupeware (http://opengroupware.org/) ? Opengroupeware is developed using non-java lang and therefore doesn�t match our strategy.
*3.-* Does the Communications Suite download-pack includes all necessary components of Sun Java ES (Directory Server, Access Manager, etc.) or these components are to be downloaded separately?
*4.-* What is the difference between the Sun Java System Messaging Server and the Sun Java System Message Queue?

1> I believe your hardware can support 20 users (you might need to tune the Web Server heap size) - I had a Sparc 2x450mhz w/ 2GB of ram supporting 50+ users quite comfortably - with roughly half using POP and the other half IMAP/webmail. Ideally though, for best performance you would want to break up the main servers (LDAP, WEB, and MS) between hosts) - probably not necessary for 20 users. Having all on one machine simplifies things too (but also makes it a single-point-of-failure). Your disk obviously is important, the faster the better - that it's redundant is also nice - larger deployments might use much fancier storage systems to provide speed and redundancy, and use an the App Server instead of the Web Server as a container for Comms Express.
2> I don't think it's "oversized" - might you mean overkill? In this case I don't think overkill is a bad thing. Why not have very capable software, even if you don't really need it -is how I see things.
3> I believe you get all you need in the download. Though I've never tried the 64bit version (which I am guessing is only really necessary for larger deployments where you want to obtain maximized performance for heavier loads). I recommend following the single host evaluation document to get the hang of the install.
4> I'm not sure - though the Messaging install I believe requires the MQueue stuff, I think it's sort of an API for messaging, also available separately, but used by JES Messaging system?

Some Questions about Sun Java Studio Creator IDE

I am quiet new to the IDE, but I experienced some
behaviours I do not actually understand.
I hope I can get some help here.
Sun Java Studio Creator Update 9
Each time I change the font size and type using the
"Advanced" option of the IDE the font I changed correctly.
But after closing and restarting the IDE the fonts are set
back to the default undoing my changes.
Is there a way to use code completion for the jsf tags within jsps ?
I know that there are code clips for adding jsf components to the jsp,
but (coming from eclipse ide) I'd appreciate a feature like the code completion for the jsf components. If there is a way by configuring, how can that be acchieved ?
Trying to add a "taglib declaration" to the jsp e.g. "<%@taglib uri="..." prefix="..." I get the warning that the tags of the xml must be welformed.
How can I add those taglib declarations correctly ?
Using the "File System View" after each change made e.g. to a jsp the
tree collapses and I have to navigate to the tree again to find my resources.
Is this common behaviour or to be configured ?

1. The changes made to the font size and type are indeed getting reset in Creator update 9. However this behaviour is not seen in the latest version of Creator which is Creator 2 EA 2. The final version of this will be available very soon and we encourage you to try the new release which has lot more features and lot of bug fixes. For more details please visit:

The behaviour of the File System View was encountered in Creator update 9 as you have mentioned. Once again this behaviour was not see in the latest version Creator 2 EA 2.
So we recommend you to try out the latest version.

Question about the java files which created by Web Dynpro

After I create a new project under Web Dynpro, there is no any java file is generated.
Now I create a new application in the project with the following names:
application name: QuizApp
package name: com.sap.tc.webdynpro.tutorials.quiz
component name: QuizComp
window name: Quiz
view name: WelcomeView.
Now, 5 java files are generated under the package:
QuizComp.java,
WelcomeView.java,
QuizCompInterface.java,
QuizInterfaceView.java
QuizCompInterfaceCfg.java
Can someone tell me what do these file mean? For what purpose?

1)QuizComp.java -
this is the source file for whatever you code inside the Component Controller ,
2)WelcomeView.java -
you get one java file for each view you create,
3)QuizCompInterface.java -
represents the public "face" of your component. If this webdynpro DC is used by another DC, the other DC can only "see" the methods present in this java class
4)QuizInterfaceView.java -
this is to represent your view assembly (window and any views as part of it) when you want to embed UI of this DC in another DC
5)QuizCompInterfaceCfg.java -
(advanced concept)
P.S: A java file is created for each Custom controller you create also. And many other classes get created too (which probably you dont need to bother about) but they require for WebDynpro concept to function properly i.e a framework

Question about the java doc of String.intern() method

hi all, my native language is not english, and i have a problem when reading the java doc of String.intern() method. the following text is extract from the documentation:
When the intern method is invoked, if the pool already contains a string equal to this String object as determined by the equals(Object) method, then the string from the pool is returned. Otherwise, this String object is added to the pool and a reference to this String object is returned.
i just don't know the "a reference to this String object is returned" part, does the "the reference to this String" means the string that the java keyword "this" represents or the string newly add to the string pool?

String s=new String("abc"); //create a string
s.intern(); //add s to the string pool, and return what? s itself or the string just added to string pool?greate thanks!

Except for primitives (byte, char, short, int, long, float, double, boolean), every value that you store in a variable, pass as a method parameter, return from a method, etc., is always a reference, never an object.

s.intern(); //add s to the string pool, and return what? s itself or the string just added to string pool?intern returns a reference to the String object that's held in the pool. It's not clear whether the String object is copied, or if it's just a reference to the original String object. It's also not relevant.

3. if the question number 2 is positive, what about InstantiationError which is a compile error and is a subclass of Error.
4.When our program is out of memory, which processes are done for an error to be produced. is the error actually from OS or VM?

Question about Logon ticket with user mapping at BI-JAVA environment

We're implementing BI 7.0 including BI Java and SAP EP for end user
access.
I have two question about SSO method when we're using BI Java.
I know we can simply configure SSO logon ticket with BI-Java(EP
included) and BI-ABAP through BI template installer and we already
succeeded in that case.
But the problem is we want to change it to user mapping SSO method for
some our internal reason.
After we configure user mapping SSO, we've got SSO failed error when we
call BI-Java stuff like BEx Web Application iView.
After many testing implemented, we found SSO Logon ticket with user
mapping (using SAP reference system). It seems working now.
But our question is "Is it no problem when we use SSO logon ticket with
user mapping?" Is there any restriction or issue?
One more question is we can ONLY use user base mapping when reference
system used. How can we assign BI-ABAP users to EP Group?

Using an SAP Reference system is allright. But if the reason u r going for this is because of different usernames in EP and BI, why dont you go for user mapping.
Anyways, on restriction of reference syetms is that you can have ONLY ONE reference system defined in portal. In you case you can only have the BI system defined.

A question about design of Java Application on java card.

There is an application on my card that it is not java card, it include a DF and some EF under DF, I would like to know if I want to have this application on java card ,how can I design DF and EF on java card ,I mean is there any relation between DF,EF with applet and file? for example can I say DF is same as applet and EF is same as file?

an instance of DF class have some EF objects.
for example,
samples/com/sun/javacard/samples/JavaPurse/CyclicFile.java
implements ISO 7816 CyclicFile ( EF )

performance consideration. thanks in advance.The point of batching is that you take something that is invariant and then 'add' a variant part.
Thus a single insert has an invariant part (the table and specific columns) and a variant part (the data for each row by column.)
You can use anything that is valid SQL (for jdbc, driver, database) and use it presuming your database allows that particular usage in batching. But that does require some regular pattern - it won't work if your usage is random. Nor will it work if some statements need to be executed only some of the time. Finally also note that transaction processing will often require smaller chunks - you can't insert a million rows in one batch.

Question about Java Applet Jar file signing.

Make sure that your bean is implementing the serializable interface and that
you are accessing the bean from the session with the same name.

Question about java-based server app frameworks

Hello, I am working on a Java applet application and would like to choose a Java-based scalable server framework to use within my applcation. I have found a few like xsocket or QuickServer and have a question about other. And, also, which is the one You may advise? Yours sincerely, Slawek

For online gaming server. I first heard of xsocket and started using this, but have the problem with NAT. I now know that I need to initiate connections from client behind NAT (server has a public IP) and send messages from server to client within the same connection. I am doing this the following way (as shown in examples- below), but it appears that server receives messages, but client doesnt. I dont listen on any ports in client application and just need to take advantage of the connection initiated (information go from client to server properly).

Question about java thread implementation

Hi All,
I am comparing the performance of the Dining philosopher's problem
implemented in Java, Ada, C/Pthread, and the experimental language I
have been working on.
The algorithm is very simple: let a butler to restrict entry to the
eating table, so that deadlock is prevented.
It turns out that the java code is the winner and it is 2 times faster than C!
The comparison result really surprised me, and raised a big
question mark : why java runs so fast? I did not use high-level synchronization
constructs like Semaphores, atomic variables, etc.
I vaguely recall that Java thread is actually implemented by the underlying
system thread library(so on linux, the default would be NPTL, on windows NT threads,
and on Mac OSX it would be Cthread?). Can no longer remember where I read that.
Does anyone here have some notions about the Java thread
implementations(where is this formally explained)? or Does anyone know where
I can possibly find relevant literature or the answer?

Note: you can turn this option off and other locking options to see if a feature is giving you the performance advantage.
Personally I have found that real world multi-threaded applications are easier to write in Java, esp. when you have a team of developers. For this reason, alot of C/C++ libraries are single threaded, even when there would be a performance advantage in being multi-threaded (because its just too hard in reality to make it thread safe and faster because of it)I didn't know that, very interesting :-)
