Questions about my MacBook Pro and Apple Support.

I was an early adopter of the Intel Mac Platform. Got my first Mac (my MacBook Pro) in April 06. It was not part of the battery recall, but I have had numerous problems. I cannot keep the machine running more than 3-5 hours without it shutting down or just locking up. The case has popped slightly (about 1mm) open on the front left. I cannot use the function keys for the heat. And I know that I need to use Apple Support, but let me tell you: I have not been impressed with Apple Support.
My Mac was sent back for "repair" in October, and returned to me less than 6 days later. When I received it, it had a preloaded user account (complete with password!) for a user (not me) that I didn't recognize. And still had the same heat/random shutdown symptoms. Upon calling Apple Support, I was told that there wasn't anything that could be done. In fact, on one phone call I was just flat-out told that I should "just go buy another one". I could go on at length about my experiences with Apple Support.
So here is my question:
Is there a magic phone number, person I can contact to actually get something done about this? I have had less than 3 total months of usable time on my Mac. (I have been dealing with Apple Support since last June.) Please help. I just want my Mac to work. I know that this is just a fluke; and that my woes are the exception, not the rule.
Thanks

can i use air play with my macbook pro and apple tv

AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later, OS X 10.8 or better and is supported on the following Mac models: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer). It also requires the computer to be using wi-fi.

  • Best stand for MacBook Pro and Apple LED Display

I am buying a MacBook Pro and Apple LED Display tomorrow. I want to have a two display setup, similar to what I have seen in the Apple Store. I believe they used a Griffin Elevator. I want to make sure of two things: that the stand is sturdy enough so that my laptop won't slide off of it and that I can adjust the stand/monitor so that the tops are level (so that moving my mouse from the laptop to monitor and back is smooth - i.e. the cursor doesn't jump up or down.
I like the fact that I can use this setup to go mobile very quickly, but what about my direct Ethernet connection. I wish there were a stand/dock such that I could hook everything up to it and then just undock the entire machine.

How did you solve the problem of closing the Macbook Pro when it was connected to the display and preventing it from going to sleep?
I am thinking about buying one. When I went to the local Apple Store the tech guys told me that it would be necessary to keep the laptop open slightly when connecting it to the display. They said it was something to do with cooling. It didn't sound right to me. I'm sure that Apple didn't solely intend for the Cinema Displays to be used by Mac Pro and Mac Mini users.
There must be a simple way to "dock" or connect a Mac laptop (Macbook Pro or Macbook) to an Apple Cinema display or any other display with DVI input while keeping the laptop closed with an external keyboard and mouse connected and still be able to use the SuperDrive.
I'm very curious about how you handled this.
    All the best for now,
    Ambrose

  • How do I synch my iPhone5, MacBook Pro and Apple TV so that my iTunes downloads appear automatically on all three devices?

How do I synch my iPhone5, MacBook Pro and Apple TV so that my iTunes downloads appear automatically on all three devices?

Let me see if I've gotten this right! You want to remove an account from BOTH machines? Do this for your new machine first, then for the other.
Click the Apple logo on the top left of the screen, System Preferences, Users and Groups (under Systems), unlock the lock in the window if its locked (you need to know the password), select the user that you wish to remove, and click the - sign next to the + sign for Login options. A window will pop up with some options. Select Delete this user and securely, and click 'Delete user'.
After this, do an update from the App Store.
Thats all there is to it.
For the other machine repeat the process except for one thing. Before you delete the user in this case YOU, you will have to give Administrator priviledges to your son bu checking the box 'Allow user to administer this computer'.
Do NOT do anything from Finder ... if you dont know how to fix the consequences of the problems caused.
There is no need to unauthorize your iTunes account on your new machine. Do it on the old machine though.

I need some advice about the macbook pro and iPhone 5.
I took a video on my iPhone and tried to email it it said it was too big to send? So i downloaded it to my macbook pro and tried to mail it to no avail? The macbook tells me the server won't let it through other mail goes through any ideas how to resize it or what it might take to send it?

I agree with LowLister, the best option for you to share the video online is to upload it to your online storage account for example : Box, Dropbox, SkyDrive (All of them provide free storage beginning from 2GB).
You can upload the files which you want to share in this online storage and then they have sharing options in which you'll will get the link of the file to be sent and send the email. You're good to go!
Tip : You can store multiple files for backup purposes.

  • Airplay mirroring between my MacBook Pro and Apple TV (1080p one) has always worked fine until now. I only sometimes get video but usually just audio. Has anyone experienced the same issue?

When using Airplay mirroring between macbook pro and apple tv I cannot see video, only hear the audio. Worked fine before. Any suggestions on what the problem could be?

I have the exact same problem. The picture is very slow, incredibly pixelated... and renders my apple tv virtually useless until this problem gets resolved. I currently have an apple tv 3, ipad retina, iphone 4s, and a 2011 macbook air. I use the apple tv almost exclusively for mirrored content. And this is definitely causing quite a problem for me.
I had been able to use this for presentations as well- but until this problem gets resolved - I may have to look for a backup solution/product. And I imagine that I'm not alone in this... Please get this resolved quickly!

  • A few questions about my MacBook Pro?

Hey guys, I have a few questions about Virtual Machines and a few other random questions.
    1. Which one is the most "complete" in its features when compared to a plain install of Win. 7?
    2. Which VM should I purchase?
I have a 15" late 2012 MacBook Pro with a 2.6 ghz intel i7, 16gb ram and a 256gb SSD. (I was planning on running it off of an external hard drive— if that is possible)
    3. I have 206.12 GB of 255.2 GB free— should I just use boot camp instead?
    4. If I use Boot Camp, do I have to delete the data that's on my Mac currently to install Win. 7 or can I partition my current drive and keep my data?
    5. What is the "other" data that's taking up 25.51 GB of space on my SSD? (I have the same problem on my iPhone, but that's a different problem.)
    Thank you very much.

You posted your Boot Camp questions in the MacBook Pro forum. Try asking in the Boot Camp forum where the Boot Camp gurus hang out. https://discussions.apple.com/community/windows_software/boot_camp

  • Airplay not working on new macbook pro and apple tv2

i have a new macbook pro and new apple tv device and have used them together easily. However, now I can't find the apple tv icon on the top bar and have searched everywhere for it, turning off and on the home sharing, restarting the apple tv. any other hints, or is it just something basic...I am new to apple products...
    Thanks

Doing the reset resolved this issue for me as well.  Not sure why it worked over the restart, but I'll take it.
My issue was that my MBP-R would not connect with AirPlay.  I had the icon in the top bar and everything.  When I would try to connect it, it would hang for about a minute, then just kick back with nothing happening.

  • 2 Airport Extermes, WDS, Macbook Pro and apple tv.

So i have 1 extreme connected to the cable modem. It is setup as the main, a second is setup as remote and there is also a PS3 plugged into it. I just upgraded my macbook pro to the N wireless card.
The network is 802n (b/g) compatible. There are no other choices with N (even holding down control).
So I go to copy a file wirelessly to my apple tv from the macbook pro and the fastest transfer speeds I am seeing is 150Kb/sec. Why is the transfer speed so slow! This is really frustrating. Copy files over a network is supposed to be fast.

Since you are using WDS the network is using 802.11g. The unfortunate part of WDS is that each WDS link cuts your available bandwidth in half.
So upgrading your MacBook Pro to 802.11n really didn't gain you anything when you use WDS.
If both of your AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) are 802.11n capable, you should use 802.11n's "extend network" feature instead of WDS. This doesn't have nearly the bandwidth penalty that WDS does.

  • Questions about New Macbook Pro

    1.  I've heard this system gets hot, but is it only when gaming?  I'll mostly be using this for web/chat and photo editing but am wondering if my legs would start to get warm or sweat by using it in say bed.
1a.  Can you keep the machine on your lap while playing games like World of Warcraft?
1b.  Do only parts of the laptop get hot, keeping where you place your hand or more importanly wrist(left 'awsd' keys) cool?
    2.  How much battery life do you get on average watching a movie(iTunes download or dvd) or just chatting/web?
    3. I'd like to say money doesn't matter in this purchase but it does have an effect.  Which are smart upgrades and which are things to stay away from?
         3a.  2.2GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7 or 2.3GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7
3b. 500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm or 128GB Solid State Drive (Yes, I have read about a lot of the current SSD drives failing)
3c. MacBook Pro 15-inch Hi-Res Glossy Widescreen Display  or MacBook Pro 15-inch Hi-Res Antiglare Widescreen Display
    4.  Is it smarter to buy Office and other products with the purchase of this Mac or can they be found for the same/lower price after it arrives?
    5.  Do most get the AppleCare Protection Plan?  And if you have used it how good is the service?
    6.  Parallels or VMware Fusion?
Sorry for all the questions and/or the long read..  I've done a good bit of looking around for a new laptop and this one keeps popping up as a good choice.  If it wasn't for the machine getting hot I might have already bought it.
Thanks in advance for all of your help!
    Dan

AppleCare is NOT insurance.  Insurance implies coverage with user accidents.  AppleCare does not give this kind of insurance.  It does give you warranty, which means any manufacturer defects it can detect that are not obviously usage, wear and tear.  In addition, it gives you unlimited support for one flat fee for both Apple software issues and hardware issues related to the machine it is bought for.  What this sort of support includes, is diagnosing any issues which may arise with the machine, and repairing any that are manufacturer defects.  Other repairs will be at cost.
    To answer your other questions:
    2.  How much battery life do you get on average watching a movie(iTunes download or dvd) or just chatting/web?
Movies, the maximum is probably around 2 hours on DVD, 3 to 4 hours from iTunes. The difference is that the DVD requires constant read from the optical drive, and decoding of the movie.  With iTunes it is just the decoding.
    3. Solid state drives are still in their infancy, and current documentation says that sensitive information should not be put on them.  The problem is that there is no way to 100% erase the data on them.  Antiglare screens are really the only way to do photography and capture the real color of what you are photographing.  Yes, the glossy gives you truer blacks, but the glare you get offsets that benefit if there is anything beyond ambient light in the room.
    4. Office is the same price either way.  You get a demo version of Office when you buy your Mac.  But unless you have a pressing need for 100% compatibility of Office documents, and can deal with the occasional hiccup (I've had none), http://www.neooffice.org/ can handle Excel, Powerpoint, and Word documents without issue.  If you find you can't get what you need from that, then invest in Office.  But at least give Neo Office, and http://docs.google.com/ a change before jumping into more costly versions of Office applications.
    6. A great comparison of all the virtualization engines is here:

  • 13" MacBook Pro and Apple 27" LED Display Not Sleeping Properly

I recently purchased a new 13" MacBook Pro (MacBookPro8,1) and a 27" Apple LED Cinema Display. When they are connected the computer occasionally has a problem being put to sleep. When clicking sleep, the monitor will take a little while to shut off, but in about 10 seconds, it will turn back on. Immediately when turning on, the image on the screen is quite scrambled (it does correct itself). Usually, if I attempt to put it to sleep multiple times, it will end up working. When it does go to sleep (correctly), the screen will turn off much faster than the times where it doesn't sleep.
Anyone else have a similar issue they found a fix to? When speaking to Apple support, they thought it was part of an issue with 10.6.6, however, the update to 10.6.7 did not solve the issue.
PS - I keep my MacBook Pro lid closed when using the display.

By the way, please be aware of a scam - iyogi
Online Technical Support - Call (AU Toll Free) 1-800-029-076.

I saw Apple support and called the number, it ended when I was asked to pay to fix my problem.
I'm not aware of the company, but from what you said I don't see how that's a scam. The advert clearly only says the call is free, not the support. Why should they give free technical support?

  • Unknown MacBook pro in Apple Support Profile

I just checked my “Apple Support Profile” which shows the Apple products registered to my Apple account.  As well as my iPhone and iPad, there’s a MacBook Pro which I know nothing about: should I be worried or will I just delete it from my profile?

  • MacBook Crash and Apple Support

Not sure if anyone else has had this experience. First, I am a brand new Mac user. Bought the new MacBook Pro i7 with 8GB of RAM as a switch from my PC laptops.
Any other big crashes out there? Just wondering if there is a systemic hardware issue?
I had the new laptop for a total of 4 days before it crashed hard. on the first full day of use, it started crashing with the veil of grey and the message that a serious error had occurred and I needed to hold down the power button to restart. It crashed a total of 6 times in 4 days (2 days of real use) before I could get to the Genius Bar.
They stated that was obviously not normal and that I should request a new unit from AppleCare, which I did as an advanced replacement. I was hoping to keep my crashing laptop just to get more used to the Mac. However, after the Genius Bar did an archive re-install, the computer immediately crashed twice while in the store.
We then attempted to do an Erase and Install, and the unit would not install the fresh load of Mac OS X. The Genius Bar rep said it definitely looked like a hardware issue since it would not re-install the software, so I had to send the unit back ahead of receiving a replacement.
As for customer service, there was absolutely no urgency to get a replacement laptop to me. It was a customized unit and it is finally due to arrive today, but it has taken 10 days since I ordered my advanced replacement.
I will tell you that this has been a very frustrating and disappointing start to my Mac usage. And customer support could have made that bad experience so much better, but their lack of action and mis-statements actually made it worse.
Sorry, I was hoping for a much better experience. I am still hoping that IF the second MacBook works I can see that I made the right decision.
    LewieE

    Hi A Brody,
Lemons do happen and while that was a disappointment, the Genius Bar guys did a great job. I will say my expectations were higher for Apple based on everything I heard trying to make my decision to swap from a PC.
The first customer service rep I spoke to when I setup the advanced replacement stated that this unit would be put at the head of the que as it was a replacement for defective unit. The second rep I spoke with said advanced replacements have the lowest priority and it should have been returned as a zero dollar replacement and by him changing it to that, especially since my return unit had been received, would cause it to jump to the head of the shipments. The third person I spoke to said it just had to be processed in the normal 5-7 day shipping replacement and there was nothing they could do.
When a customer has a problem, customer service can make or break that experience. In fact, customers that have had a problem and had a positive resolution to that problem are shown to be more loyal than customers that have never had a problem at all.
    Regards,
    LewieE
