Questions on reading a file...

Hi All,
I have a few questions on reading a file...
1st of all ... if I have
BufferedReader inFile = new BufferedReader (new FileReader("tickets.txt"));and I do inFile.readLine(); will it read the next line everytime I do that? ... say I had a file that had 5 lines of text and I did inFile.readLine(); 5 times will I get the first line 5 times or will I get each line?
If the is a blank line in the file will it return null?
how can I feed the file name to args[0] and what is that for?
Thanks,
Mike

    public static void main(String args[]) {
        BufferedReader inFile = null;
        try {
            inFile = new BufferedReader (new FileReader(args[0]));
            for (int i = 0; i < reservation.length; i++) {
                readFile(reservation, inFile, arrayCounter, numberOfReadItems);*/
                inFile.close();
        catch (ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException aioobe) {
            System.out.println("Parameter required");
            System.exit(0);
        catch (FileNotFoundException fnfe) {
            System.out.println("File not found");
            System.exit(0);
        catch (IOException ioe) {
            System.out.println("Failed to close file");
            System.exit(0);

  • Question about reading csv file into internal table

    Some one (thanks those nice guys!) in this forum have suggested me to use FM KCD_CSV_FILE_TO_INTERN_CONVERT to read csv file into internal table. However, it can be used to read a local file only.
    I would like to ask how can I read a CSV file into internal table from files in application server?
    I can't simply use SPLIT as there may be comma in the content. e.g.
    "abc","aaa,ab",10,"bbc"
    My expected output:
    abc
    aaa,ab
    10
    bbb
    Thanks again for your help.

    Try this code. I have made a custom parser to read the details in the record and split them accordingly. I have also tested them with your provided test cases and it work fine.

  • Newbie question -  How to read all files for a backup

    Hello all,
    I have two users on my iMac. I am an administrator and the other user is a Standard user.
    From my account, I wish to run backup software that will backup the entire "User" directory. The problem I am having is that when I run the backup software (fyi: iBackup),
    it complains that it cannot read the files in the other user's account.
    I notice that when I browse to the other user's account, all the directories in their home folder are locked.
    How can I run my backup software so that it can read all files in the User directory?
    Thank you kindly!

    Hi kneecarrot !
    I don't know if this will suit your needs, but one easy way of backing up other user's stuff is via the terminal . If you have an admin accountm just use:
    sudo ditto -rsrcFork /Users /Volumes/"nameof_anotherharddrive"/Users
    This will perform an identical clone of all your users home direcories for backup purposes. To restore the bkd'up files, just reverse the lines:
    sudo ditto -rsrcFork /Volumes/"nameof_anotherharddrive"/Users /Users
    ATTENTION: Be aware that it will restore the files to the exact structure and contents it was when backed up, erasing all new and modified files!! You may however copy just the files/folders you want to recover, e.g.:
    sudo ditto -rsrcFork /Volumes/"nameof_another_harddrive"/Users/"usera"/Documents /Users/"user_a"/Documents
    IMPORTANT: As with all terminal commands... be careful, think twice and double-check the syntax. You may want to test with non-critical stuff or demo user accounts first.
    Good luck,

  • Question concerning read file

    Hello All,
    I wrote a program to read a file. When I compile and run the file it runs fine. I take this same code and try to read the file using a JSP page and now my error is file cannot be found, can some one tell be what's wrong here. I'm just calling the class from the JSP page nothing more, and I'm getting File not found although the path was specified correctly and the program worked as a stand alone using Main before.
    Please any help?
    KT

    I want this program to at least read the file from my JSP page
    Here is part of the source code for the Java file
    1)
    DataInputStream inFile=
                 new DataInputStream(
                    new BufferedInputStream(
                   new FileInputStream("Data_452SY2.txt")));
              DataOutputStream outFile = new DataOutputStream(
                               new FileOutputStream("test2.xls"));
              String readDetail_topLayer;2)
    Here is the JSP page (not doing anything yet) just accepting the java file
    <%@page import="dev.*" %>
    <%@page session="true" language="java" import="java.io.*" import="java.util.*" %>
    <jsp:useBean id="wagerhist" scope="page" class="dev.RoundDetail2" />
    3) the rest is just HTML code
    the path for the inoput file ("Data_452SY2.txt") is in the same directory as the class file, but I'm getting file not found exception
    any help?

  • Questions on init.ora file

    Hi,
    I have some questions on init.ora file. While checking the init file in my system i found that it defines a spfile in a non default location.
    The parameter names are like
    1) db1.__db_cache_size
    2) *._kgl_large_heap_warning_threshold
    3) *.sga_target
    what do they indicate? I mean what does 'db1.__' , '*._' and '*.' indicate? There are multiple database in the Windows 2003 server and the db version is 10g R1

  • "Error 1 when trying to open and read datalog file from several subVi's

    So, I've been coding up this model based controller and have hit a snag:
    The program starts and opens a datalog file and passes the refnum to two loops.
    At a regular time interval (every 2 minutes), one loop (that's iterating once per second) writes the current information to a datalog file.
    Meanwhile, another loop (that's iterating continuously) checks to see if the file is big enough to support training of the model, if it is, then the training process begins. Once this happens a period of recent information is read from the file. Initially, this read would fail and return 0 data. However, this problem was fixed by passing in the data file path rather then the refnum and having the vi open,
    read, and close the data file. With the path, the vi was able to read all the data. However, still in the same loop, another vi downstream tries to read the file and returns error code 1, and no data is read. I tried passing that vi the path and seeing if it made any difference to open, read and close the file. But even then the read failed (with error code 1).
    I don't understand why it can read in one vi and not the other!
    Does anyone know what is going on here? It seems that semaphores would probably solve the problem, but would prefer a simpler solution. Thank you very much.

    Try passing the data to the continuous loop through a LV2-style global. That way you are only access the file in one place. But then that begs the question, if the data is passed internally, do you really need the file at all?

  • How I can know if a user has the permission to read a file or not ?

    Hello,
    I have other question :
    How I can know if a user has the permission to read a file or not ?
    Smaine
    ThanK's

    I don't think common operating systems have an easy way to do that check.
    If you have a limited number of files, implement access control yourself, instead of using operating system permissions. E.g. write a configuration file that contains:
    # Syntax: "filename": "list of users who can access that file"
    somefile.txt: fred, alice, bob
    somedir/anotherfile.txt: bob, joe
    Read in the configuration file and check against it when a file is being requested.

  • Reading text file from database server in OA Page

    Hi Guys,
    I am trying to embed an applet with in an OA Page. The applet is used to mainly for showing Gantt chart. I have to pass my connection details from OA Page to applet, I dont pass directly the connection details to the applet so i am placing all the server details, user name and password in a text file on the database server.
    So from the OA Page i have to read the contents of the file on the database server and pass them to the applet using the <PARAM> tag. My question is how to read the text file from the database server.Any Inputs?
    Thanks in advance for your help.
    Regards,
    Nagesh Manda.

    If the file to be read is on the database, then it makes sense to use the pl/sql code to read the file. Make a call to this pl/sql code from page controller to get back the values.

  • Jar files required to read excel file in SAP PI 7.3.1 sp09 dualstack

    Hi experts,
    I need to read excel file (.xls) using SAP PI and process it to target system. I have read blogs
    and found that there are 2 ways to read an excel file in PI using file adapter.
    1) Developing a custom adapter module
    2) Using XSLT code.
    So in order to develop a custom adapter module, i have followed the following blogs
    **************** - XI - Step-by-step guide to develop Adapter Module to read Excel file
    and
    Excel Files - How to handle them in SAP XI/PI (The Alternatives)
    and
    http://wiki.scn.sap.com/wiki/display/ABAP/Adapter+Module+To+Read+Excel+File+with+Multiple+Rows+and+Multiple+Columns
    I am unable to find the jar files in SAP PI at OS level as per the first blog(think they were obsolete).
    Please let me know
    1) What are the required jar files needed to read excel file and their location
    2) Even if i use the old jar files as mentioned in the first blog can i achieve my requirement
    3) Following this blog Convert incoming XML to Excel or Excel XML – Part 1 - XSLT Way if i apply the same logic at sender side, will it work? Because through case studies i came to know that we cannot read a .xls file using XSLT code. Correct me if i am wrong.
    Looking for your valuable suggestions.
    Regards
    Shilpa

    Hi Shilpa
    Welcome to SCN!
    The blog you refered to might be for previous versions of PI. You can refer to the following two wikis to find out what are the relevant JAR files for PI 7.3 and also how to get them.
    XI libraries for development - Process Integration - SCN Wiki
    Where to get the libraries for XI development - Process Integration - SCN Wiki
    It also looks like for newer versions, you might not need to manually get and add those JAR files into your NWDS project - please refer to the first comment on the blog below. I have not tried it personally as I'm not using the latest NWDS, but you can try that first, and if it does not work, then go get them manually.
    PI 7.4 - Adapter Module Creation using EJB 3.0
    Do note that you should be using the JAR files that is corresponding to your PI server version.
    As for your third question, that does not apply to you. XLS is the older non-XML format, and therefore cannot be read by XLST since it is in binary format.

  • Reading .MHT Files using Sender File Adapter

    Hi Gurus,

    This is just a single record for sample purpose and my file contains line entries with these content .
    Now my question is how do we handle such file extensions ? Do we have to use Module processor ?
    Or any other option is left as i am yet to check directly calling .MHT files using File Adapter.
    Thanks in advance for help.

    Hi Sitaraman
    As per the description given it looks like a flat file with separator as ";". You can do an FCC using file adapter and give it a try. if complete file is uniform as look above then it will work fine and you can read this file else adapter module is the option to read such unstructured file.
    Thanks

  • How to Read all files inside resource Folder inside Jar?

    I have a Jar file,,,, The program reads for resource files in the resource folder inside the Jar. I want my program to read all files inside this folder without knowing the names or the number of files in the folder.
    I am using this to make an Applet easy to be updated with spicific files. I just want to add a file inside the resource folder and Jar the program and automatically the program reads what ever is in there!!
    I used the File class to get all file names inside the resource folder. it works fine before Jarring the program. After I jar I recieve a URI not Herarichy Exception!!
    File fold=new java.io.File(getClass().getResource(folder).toURI());
    String[] files=fold.list();
    I hope the question is clear!!

    How to get the directory and jar file that you class resides in:
    // returns path and jarfile (ex: /home/mydir/my.jar)
    public String getJarfileName()
            // Get the location of the jar file and the jar file name
            java.net.URL outputURL = YourClass.class.getProtectionDomain().getCodeSource().getLocation();
            String outputString = outputURL.toString();
            String[] parseString;
            int index1 = outputString.indexOf(":");
            int index2 = outputString.lastIndexOf(":");
            if (index1!=index2) // Windows/DOS uses C: naming convention
               parseString = outputString.split("file:/");
            else
               parseString = outputString.split("file:");
            String jarFilename = parseString[1];
           return jarFilename;
    }If your my.jar was in /home/mydir, it will store "/home/mydir/my.jar" in jarFilename.
    note: getLocation returns "file:/C:/home/mydir/my.jar" for Windows/DOS and "file:/home/mydir/my.jar" for windows, thus why I look for the first and last index of the colon so I can correctly split the string.
    If you want to grab a file in the jar file and get an InputStream, do the following:
    import java.io.*;
    import java.util.Enumeration;
    // jar stuff
    import java.util.jar.*;
    import java.util.zip.ZipEntry;
    public class Jaris
       private JarFile jf;
       public Jaris(String jarFilename) throws Exception
           try
                           jf = new JarFile(jarFilename);
           catch (Exception e)
                jf=null;
                throw(e);
       public InputStream getInputStream(String matchString) throws Exception
           ZipEntry ze=null;
           try
              Enumeration resources = jf.entries();
              while ( resources.hasMoreElements() )
                 JarEntry je = (JarEntry) resources.nextElement();
                 // find a file that matches this string from anywhere in my jar file
                 if ( je.getName().matches(".*\\"+matchString) )
                    String filename=je.getName();
                    ze=jf.getEntry(filename);
          catch (Exception e)
             throw(e);
          InputStream is = jf.getInputStream(ze);
          return is;
       // for testing the Jaris methods
       public static void main(String[] args)
          try
               String jarFilename=getJarfileName();
               Jaris jis = new Jaris(jarFilename); // this is the string we got from the other method listed above
               InputStream is=jis.getInputStream("myfile.txt"); // can be used for xml, xsl, etc

  • UCCX Reading XML file hosted on IIS web server

    hi guys,
    i have a customer on CCX 8.5 environment and they have a .NET application running on an IIS web server. As part of this .NET application, the app produce an XML file.
    My questions is
    "Can CCX read XML file that is hosted externally on IIS web server rather than parsing the XML file on CCX document repository?"
    All of the examples of XML parsing points to the XML file in document repository.
    Any pointers to links and documentation/example on how to do this would be greatly appreciated.
    If this is not achievable, if you could kindly suggest a different way of doing it too would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    Daniel

    Hi,
    to be quite honest with you, I don't know anything about Sharepoint - so I am afraid I cannot help you with its XML editing capabilities. XML is just a well formed text file that follows some logical rules, so no additional application is required for editing, in fact, I always encourage everybody to use Notepad/Textpad/ to read and edit XML files. Of course, if it's not possible, you will find a great number of various user friendly XML editing applications.
    A UCCX script will normally access an XML using the Create URL Document step and then, using the Get XML Document data step with the help of an XPath expression, will filter out the necessary information from the XML document.
    The protocols used are standard and well known, including HTTP and XPath (and XML itself). So it does not really matter what kind of HTTP server serves the XML file, IIS is just an option.
    Examples may be found in the Scripting guides for your particular UCCX version.

  • How to read SGML files using Java

    I've got a text categorisation test collection called Reuters-21578 for my Information Retrieval project. It is distributed in 22 files. Each of the first 21 files (reut2-000.sgm through reut2-020.sgm) contains 1000 documents, while the last (reut2-021.sgm) contains 578 documents. The files are in SGML format. Each of the 22 files begins with a document type declaration line:
    <!DOCTYPE lewis SYSTEM "lewis.dtd"> The DTD file lewis.dtd is included in the distribution. Following the document type declaration line are individual Reuters articles marked up with SGML tags.
    My questions is how to write a java program to read those 21578 documents or transform them into 21578 seperated text files.

    I guess I missed something. What is Renes link?. The
    parser stuff isn't really what I'm looking for. I'm
    a new at and just learning java and I just want to
    know the easiest way to read a SGML file. Should I
    use a buffered Reader with a Pushback Input Stream?Hang on.....you want to just read the file without intelligently extracting the SGML data contained within and so have no need of a parser?
    Well, in that case, its just text.....so just use BufferedReader or whatever to read the text data. If I understand you correctly, all you really wanted to ask was "how do I read a text file?"
