Questions Regarding Adobe Document Services

Greetings,
We are looking at implementing Adobe Document Services and I have some general questions about running it; any input you can give will be helpful.  I am particularly eager for good reference documents that have answers to these questions.
Question 1:
We have multiple ABAP stacks which could use ADS (which runs on the J2EE stack).  Can we use just one J2EE instance running the latest version of ADS and hook it up to all our ABAP stacks?  Or do we need a separate J2EE instance for each ABAP stack?
Question 2:
Are there direct version dependencies between ADS and the ABAP stack version / J2EE stack version?  In other words, if we upgrade the ABAP stack version does the ADS version need to increase to the same stack level?
Question 3:
Does Adobe Lifecycle Designer require a separate client install for it to work in the SAPGUI?
Question 4:
What is meant by "high volume" print scenarios -- and why would this supposedly need a dual-stack system?
Thanks in advance SDNers!

actuall the statement to have ABAP+JAVA for performnce reasons is obsolete as of NW 7.0 SP12
please see the Master guide at https://service.sap.com/instguides
For SAP NetWeaver 7.0 SP Stack 06 and higher, run both usage types AS ABAP and AS Java in
one system to improve performance for printing scenarios in this system. This precludes the
possibility of using one central ADS for several systems.
As of SAP NetWeaver 7.0 SP Stack 12, this restriction no longer applies. Therefore you can also
improve performance by using one central ADS for several systems.
this is a good starting point https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/adobe
There are in particular for ADS installations on HP-UX performance constraints
please checkout #1133230:
Because the ADS binary files execute using the AIRES emulator, erformance of the ADS will be slightly different from what is indicated in the ADS sizing guidelines.
Performance for small print forms will be approximately 2.0 times slower than indicated in the sizing guideline.
Performance for medium and large print forms and non-cached interactive forms will be approximately 1.5 times slower than indicated in the sizing guideline
Performance for cached interactive forms will be approximately 25% faster than indicated in the sizing guideline

    Hello,

  • Basic question on Adobe document services

    Hi
We have a ECC50 instance - the basis component of which has been given to us from our headquarters that has stripped off the J2EE server ( i.e given a WAS640 with just the ABAP runtime installed ).
Now, we are planning to use Adobe Interactive forms - for simple applications - like our field sales able to create a sales order by entering data -offline and submitting it to our ECC50 box.
Now, question is - the ADS - that provides runtime services - does it need a J2EE server - or can I assume that this version of our ECC50 has ADS installed on the ABAP stack - and we still go ahead and plan using Adobe Interactive Services assuming that ADS ( PDF document object )would be available to our ABAP environment to process a PDF form that comes in from field sales ?
Thanks in advance for answering this very basic question.

    Hello Karthik,
the ADS only runs on the Java stack, so yes you will need to have SAP Web AS Java installed to deploy and run Interactive Forms.
The functionality of ADS can then be accessed both from Java and ABAP applications.
    Cheers,
    Matthias

  • A few questions regarding the configuration of Adobe Document Services

<u><i>For Your Information: the main questions are repeated at the end of this post.</i></u>
The Adobe Document Services seems to work fine. The test I did on http://<server>:<port>/AdobeDocumentServices/Config gives the error
' "Required stream: "PDFDocument" not found.” ' so that's fine.
But when I do this: http://server:50000/webdynpro/dispatcher/local/TutWD_OnlineInteractiveForm/OnlineInteractiveFormApp
The result: the PDF is shown and I can enter text in the textboxes and also use the radioboxes.
But I can't use the dropdownboxes, neither can I use the "submit" and "check" buttons..
Is this normal? Or is it because of the ReaderRights credential?
Or is it necessary to install the ACF?
Here is some info I got from a blog:
    "<b>Client Side Requirements</b>
Follow the steps mentioned below. Please make sure the following prerequisites are met before working with Adobe Interactive Forms.
    NWDS 7.0 / 6.0
    Adobe Live cycle designer 7.1 / 7.0
    Adobe Reader 7.0.8 [ Minimum : 7.0.1]
    <b>End User Requirements</b>
    Adobe Reader 7.0.8 [ Minimum : 7.0.1]
Active Component Framework (ACF) - SPS 9, SPS 10"
    Two more questions;
1)This info is in the config guide:
"If you have installed the ADS and the WD runtime environment on different J2EE engines and if the communication between these engines uses the SLD, you need to publish the ADS to the SLD."
Does this mean that I don't need to do this when I haven't used SLD? Or is it necessary to install SLD?
    Some more info:
    Prerequisites:
A System Landscape Dir must already have been configured.
If you have not yet done so, perform the necessary activities according to the documentation SAP System Landscape Directory, Administrative Activities section, chapters:
Start and stop the SLD Service
    Configure the SLD Server
    Configure data persistence
Make settings for the SLD bridge
You can find this documentation by calling the following URL in your web
    browser: http://<host>:<port>/sld
When I check this URL, I don't see anything concerning an (already configured) SLD.
    2) Do I need the license below too to develop in AIF?
    https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/servlet/prt/portal/prtroot/com.sap.km.cm.docs/oss_notes/sdn_oss_bc_srv/~form/handler%7b5f4150503d3030323030363832353030303030303031393732265f4556454e543d444953504c4159265f4e4e554d3d373530373834%7d
    Main questions----
I need to create a form with a few fields (of which some fields are mandatory); then I have to use a few BAPI's to check these fields and to save the content in a CRM system.
I've installed Netweaver Sneak Preview, and configured Adobe Document Services (made ADSUser & ADSCaller, set IIOP etc to Autostart, Installed the credentials). The tests seem to work fine, but I haven't developed anything yet.
    My questions:
1)Is it necessary to install the ACF?
2)Is it necessary to install Adobe LifeCycle Designer?
    3)Also SLD?
    4)Also the license described above?

    No one?
Some questions are answered by someone else.
-The SLD is okay, it doesn't need to be configured
-The Adobe Lifecycle Designer is automatically installed when installing the Netweaver Studio Sneak Preview SP16
    Just two more questions:
    1)when I open http://server:port/webdynpro/dispatcher/local/TutWD_OnlineInteractiveForm/OnlineInteractiveFormApp
The PDF is shown but I can't use the buttons or the dropdown boxes.
I tried to install ACF but I have NW04s SP16, and the ACF is only SP11.
So when I install that, it only shows a blue screen with "I am the placeholder control"
When I install ACF SP19 for NW04, the PDF shows again, but I still can't use the buttons or dropdowns. Is this normal?
    2) Do I need the license described below?

  • Adobe Document Services landscape question

    Hello,
We have installed Adobe Document Services (ADS) as part of Netweaver 2004s on a 32 bit Windows server. We have our Development Portal configured to point to this server in the configuration of ADS.
Can we use the same ADS server for our QA Portal? We want to limit the number of servers/instances that we have to install and maintain.
    Thank you,
    George Barta

    Hello,
There is a web service client connection to setup, and that's it (so nothing extraordinary there) !
Guids on how to do this are available on service.sap.com/adobe (configuration guide) and also in the following threads:

  • Add Subform dynamically,on click of Button, in Interactive form generated by Adobe Document Services

    HI,
I have an XDP file designed by Adobe Designer 7.1 with the following hierarchy of elements:
    -form1(root)
    --Button
--tmpForm (subform - Repeat subform for each data entry )
    ---ST (Text)
Now, this XDP file generates an Interactive PDF form with Reader Rights enabled by the Adobe Document Services.
On click of button, the following javascript is executed on client side:
    var df = _tmpForm.addInstance(1);
    df.ST.rawValue = "HI" ;
    xfa.host.messageBox( "Instances" + tmpForm.all.length ) ;
On clicking the button, i get the length of the instances of the subform and the size increases on each click, but no element is added "visibly" to the pdf.
But when i try to do the same by saving the XDP file as Dynamic PDF form for Acrobat 8.0,and open it using Adobe Acrobat PRO 8.0, it works fine.
My question is,I s it not possible to add subforms dynamically in PDF's generated by Adobe Document Services with Reader Rights enabled?
Or, is there something that i am missing?
    Please guide.
    Thanks.
    Regards,
    Siddhartha

    Hi,
you can't change the behavior of the save button in the browser nor in Reader/Acrobat.
You can add a custom button within your form which calls a custom script from a folder level script using the browserForDoc method.
The browseForDoc methos is the only one whcih can change the name in the saveAs dialog.
Here's an example., you can run from Acrobat console.
You need to combine it with the solution from the other thread to make it work with your form.
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/2266799#2266799%232266799
    var oRetn = app.browseForDoc({
        bSave: true,
        cFilenameInit: "MyForm.pdf",
        cFSInit: "",
    if (typeof oRetn !== "undefined") {
        this.saveAs({
            cFS: oRetn.cFS,
            cPath: oRetn.cPath,
            bPromptToOverwrite: false

  • Adobe Document Services Architecture NW04s

    All,
I am working at a customer that will be using Adobe Document Services for interactive forms.
The customer has several existing SAP applications but for this project it was recommended to configure the ADS on the SRM server (java stack is required)
What I need to know is the best practice architecture for the customers current needs as well as if they intend to expand its use in the future.
A)Should they have a centralized ADS server?
    B) Should they have an ADS on each landscape? ie: one for CRM, one for SRM, one for ERP, in Dev/TST and QA
C)Can they have an ADS on their SRM server and share it with their ERP or other servers? ie: If they want to use ESS/MSS in the future
    Any suggestions would be appreciated,

Interesting question, frequently faced in large companies.
The ADS can be shared between various SAP systems, (question c: yes).
So typically the same ADS server can be used for DEV and QAS environments, and one special for productive purposes (questions a, b, c).
Recommandation from SAP side is that the ADS should have the same SPS level as the other components (ABAP or Java) with of course same SP level for all the components for the J2EE engine where the ADS is running.
This the way the newly created forms are tested by SAP (questions a, b, c).
Knowing this, to have a central ADS instance is in practice quite difficult to achieve, so the answer depends on the architecture (number of servers, upgrades plannings etc.)
Keep in mind the sizing of the ADS: your architecture will also then depend of the usage of the ADS by the various SAP systems (questions a, b, c).
    Hope this helps,
    Best regards,
    Francois

Why do we have to create a new user for the server which is consuming the web service? We already have an user "ADSUser" defined for the Web AS server which has ADS services deployed.
I have opened this thread to solve the previous unanswered question I posted on SDN Empty area in place of Interactive form. .
One more thing the adobe print forms of ESS [Total Compensation Statement and Salary Statement] are rendering properly, only the ones with Interactive ability or not.
    thanks,
    Sanketh

    Hello Sanketh,
    1. To access the NW04s configuration guide,
        - Go to https://service.sap.com/adobe
        - On the left frame (tree), under Adobe > Media Library > Documentation
        - On the right had pane you will find the link to the NW04s Configuration guide
    2. The link that you have mentioned below details the steps required to be carried out on the client machine that consumes the Adobe Document Services. In our case that is the j2ee engine on which your Web Dynpro application is running. It could be the same physical machine with two different j2ee instances hosting Web Dynpro and ADS or it could be two different physical machine or a single machine having a single instance of j2ee engine hosting both the Web Dynpro and the ADS.
You do not have to create a separate username and a password on the consuming machine but you need to configure the Web Service client proxy to point to the ADS (maybe hosted on a different machine) with the username and the password created on the ADS server. As you have mentioned, you have already created such an user on the ADS (ADSUser). This user authentication on the client machine (consuming server - Web Dynpro) would be required at the runtime by the j2ee engine to authenticate itself with the ADS.
    Best Regards,
    Krish

  • [PDF] use Adobe Document Services

    Hi,
We already discussed about generating PDF (see also this Weblog : /people/sap.user72/blog/2004/11/10/bsphowto-generate-pdf-output-from-a-bsp) from the current page ([PDF] Print BSP current page)
I would like to re-open the subject and asks the question :
<b>"Is this possible to achieve the same without using some third-party tool</b>(I know Eddy is fond of HTMLDOC)<b>, and especially, by using Adobe Document Services ?"</b>
    Thanks in advance.

using ADS it should be possible. but we have taken a different route. we have developed a small java application (jsp) using <a href="http://www.lowagie.com/iText/download.html">ITEXT</a> residing on the j2ee engine and from out bsp we call this and pass our array to it, it would then render the content in PDF.

    Hi,
All the form-related services have to be started first: the IIOP on dispatcher and server, all the Document Services *, PDF manupulation and XML form module.
Then you should be able to register your credential.

is this problem resolved ? -  this seems related to DB/OS (e.g., if largefiles not enabled then the datafile cannot grow beyond 2GB and file resets)
or something like that which SAPinst is not equipped to handle and does not give a better error message
the system.log in the sapinst_instdir may have some clues

I checked notes 934275 and  826419, but those did not help. I verified that the ADS is working fine by using http://<server>:<port>/AdobeDocumentServices/Config
Because this works it seems to me that the package is correctly deployed. We are on SPS 9.
Anybody any suggestions what to test more?

    Hi,
Adobe Document Services 32 bit only supports Suse SLES 9 on x86_64 64 bit. Is this what you are using ?
Please refer to the Platform Availability Matrix to check on the compatibility issues. Here's the link : https://websmp110.sap-ag.de/~form/sapnet?_SHORTKEY=01100035870000651812&
    Hope this helps.

  • Adobe Document Services SP19

    Hi,
We are running Adobe Document Services with MSS on NW04 EP6 SP15, with Adobe SP15.
We are planning on upgrading the Portal components to SP19 and am wondering when SP19 of Adobe Document Services is going to be made available for download?
Right now, I am able to find the Adobe DS SP18.
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards, Neeta

    Hello Neeta,
Where do you search for this service pack? It should be available in the service marketplace under the following path: Support Packages and Patches -> SAP NetWeaver -> SAP NETWEAVER -> SAP NETWEAVER 04 - > Entry by Component -> Adobe Document Services -> ADOBE DOCUMENT SERVICES 1.00 -> OS independent.
    Regards,
    Philipp

  • Adobe Document Services - http Response 500 - How to configure the logging?

We are building an application in Web Dynpro Java that fetches data from an R/3 system via an RFC connection and is then supposed to show said data in a pdf within an iview. For that task we want to use the InteractiveForm UIElement. We bind the data to its pdfSource in the iViewu2019s context. Currently the form only consists of a text field bound to one attribute element of the pdfSource context node.
The ADS webservice is configured according to the manuals found here:
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70/helpdata/en/fa/0b700d6cfd4e03a8ec2186ba6ff4af/frameset.htm
and tested successfully under the following link
    http://<portal_host>:<port>/AdobeDocumentServices/Config?style=document
However, when we execute the application, an error occurs in the webservice generating the pdf, namely Invalid Content-Type:text/html. The error occurs when the iView containing the form is shown for the first time, even before the attributes of the pdfSource context are filled with data (we expect to see an empty form).
As it seems the webservice is expected to return a MIME type of either application/pdf or text/xml (we donu2019t know for sure since the SAP manuals and forums are inconclusive here), but instead we get text/html. This seems to be due to the fact that the webservice exits with an http response 500 Internal Server Error (we used several network monitoring tools to confirm that such a response is sent). Since such http responses are but html files with an empty body, yet not xml or pdf, the aforementioned error does make sense to us, but we do not know what Internal Error has caused it.
The only help that SAP seems to provide for an error u201CInvalid Content-Type:text/htmlu201D in context with ADS points to an expiring password or otherwise poor configuration of the ADSUser, which (most certainly) is not our case here since, and as said above, the configuration was and can be tested successfully.
We then tried to view the logs for this error on the machine where the J2EE engine is running with ADS installed according to this (not very comprehensible) guide:
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70/helpdata/de/97/ccfc3f0ac2c642e10000000a1550b0/frameset.htm
We cannot find anything relevant in the server.log of the Visual Administrator except this message (it is generated exactly when our error occurs u2013 the trace severity is set to ALL for all Adobe application elements according to manual):
    Date , Time , Message , Severity , Category , Location , Application , User
12/08/2010 , 13:50:46:511 , application [webdynpro/dispatcher] Processing HTTP request to servlet [dispatcher] finished with error.
The error is: com.sap.tc.webdynpro.clientserver.adobe.pdfdocument.base.core.PDFDocumentRuntimeException: Failed to  GENERATEPDF
    Exception id: [0800274DA7ED00850000005B00000900000496E5919E28BA] , Error , /System/Server/WebRequests , com.sap.engine.services.servlets_jsp.server.HttpHandlerImpl , sap.com/tcwddispwda , Guest
There is no error.pdf to be found on the file system and since neither have we known nor are we told by the error message, whether the underlying cause is is a render error or connection error or configuration error or what not, we donu2019t know whether the error.pdf is supposed to be generated at all.
Or could there be any other reason why generation didnu2019t take place?
Furthermore we canu2019t seem to be able to find any logs more verbose or detailed about this issue - at least not within the Visual Administrator or the portalu2019s nwa.
How is it possible to properly debug the webservice for pdf-generation or at least to retrieve a fully detailed log containing all notifications and exception stack traces etc.?
I am assuming that we are making some basic mistakes regarding the logging configuration - but what?
Our goal is to know what causes the 500 Internal Server Error response that causes the Incorrect Content-Type exception.
We are using a NetWeaver 7.01 portal installation with Adobe Document Services 7.01 installed on a Windows Server 2003 platform.
    Any help is highly appreciated!
    Serg

Have you tried restarting the Java PDF object in Visual Administrator?  Once you do all of your config, you have to restart the PDF object (sao.com/tcwdpdfobject) for the changes to take place.  I am assuming you've run all of the test programs in SAP (FP_TEST_00, FP_TEST_03, etc.).  Is there any chance that the ADSUSER is locked somehow?
