Quick question... thank you in advance

Question

I am a a beginner in AppleScript, but not in programming. I am trying to write an AppleScript that will get the contents of a folder, open the files in TextEdit and print them.. My code cannot open any of the documents in the folder... code below:
Can you help?

set theFolder to choose folder with prompt "Please select a folder of items to process"
set theFolderItems to (list folder theFolder without invisibles)
repeat with a from 1 to length of theFolderItems
set thing to (item a of theFolderItems)

open targetFile

The problem is when you create targetFile. theFolder is type: alias and thing is type:string. When compund them with & the alias is not coerced to string so targetFile ends up being a list with two values not a single string.
So a few ways to do this. Here is one that works around having to build the file alias for opening.

set theFolderItems to entire contents of theFolder as alias list
on error
set theFolderItems to entire contents of theFolder as alias as list
end try
repeat with targetFile in theFolderItems

open targetFile
print targetFile
end tell
end repeat
end tell
